Introduction to Modelling
Solid modeling is the most advanced method of geometric modeling in three dimensions. Solid
modeling is the representation of the solid parts of the object on your computer. The typical
geometric model is made up of wire frames that show the object in the form of wires. This wire
frame structure can be two dimensional, two and half dimensional or three dimensional.
Providing surface representation to the wire three dimensional views of geometric models makes
the object appear solid on the computer screen and this is what is called as solid modeling.
Solid modeling is one of the most important applications of the CAD software and it has been
becoming increasingly popular of late. The solid modeling CAD software helps the designer to
see the designed object as if it were the real manufactured product. It can be seen from various
directions and in various views. This helps the designer to be sure that the object looks exactly as
they wanted it to be. It also gives additional vision to the designer as to what more changes can
be done in the object.
The computational aspects of solid modeling deal with efficient data structures and algorithms,
and benefit from recent developments in the field of computational geometry. Efficient
processing is essential, because the complexity of industrial models is growing faster than the
performance of commercial workstations. Techniques for modeling and analyzing surfaces and
for computing their intersections are important in solid modeling. Graphic user-interface (GUI)
techniques also play a crucial role in solid modeling, since they determine the overall usability of
the modeler and impact the users productivity. There have always been strong symbiotic links
and overlaps between the solid modeling community and the computer graphics community

SolidWorks as a Modelling package

SOLIDWORKS is 3D solid modeling CAD software that runs on Microsoft Windows and is
produced by Dassault Systms SolidWorks Corp. SolidWorks provides a suite of product
development tools mechanical design, design verification, data management, and communication
tools. SolidWorks Premium includes all of the capabilities of SolidWorks Professional as well as
routing and analysis tools, including SolidWorks Routing, SolidWorks Simulation, and
SolidWorks Motion..
Basically SolidWorks is a Parasolid-based solid modeler, and utilizes a parametric featurebased approach to create models and assemblies. SolidWorks files use the Microsoft Structured
Storage file format. This means that there are various files embedded within each SLDDRW
(drawing files), SLDPRT (part files), SLDASM (assembly files) file, including preview bitmaps
and metadata sub-files. A TransMagic plug-in for SolidWorks is available that expands its
import/export capability via native CAD kernels.
SolidWorks includes libraries of standard parts and fasteners, tools to help convert imported
geometry, and utilities that search designs for errors. Realistically render your designs with
PhotoView 360 software and then share them with others using eDrawings. SOLIDWORKS also
gives you integrated file management tools that securely store all project information and track
all design changes.

1. Sketch a circle on top plane(Profile1)
2. Take another sketch(profile2) on the parallel plane.
3. Draw a guide curve in a plane other than the previously used planes.
4. Now carefully pierce the guide curve with two profiles.
5. Select Loft option select the profile curve and guide curve appropriately.

Sweep and Helical spiral

Procedure:
1. Select the spiral option then select reference circle.
2. Give pitch and revolution to generate spiral.
3. Draw reference plane using point and spiral curve.
4. Select this reference plane.
5. Draw a profile sketch as per thread requirement.
6. Now select the sweep command, then select profile and spiral.

Ex: 05
Aim:

Exercise on Shell and Wrap

To model the given object using Shell and wrap command.

Description of Shell and Wrap command:
Shell feature creates hollows in the part with constant thickness.
Wrap feature enables to write text on the surfaces.

Shell and Wrap

Procedure:
1. At first create a model.
2. Select a planar face of the model from where shell has to be made and assign
thickness to be given to the model.
3. To wrap text on the surfaces select that surface and exit the sketch.
4. Now use text command in the sketch tool bar in the sketch mode.
5. Select deboss, emboss or scribe and exit from the sketch.
Results:
Thus the given model is done by using the Shell and Wrap command.

Ex: 06

Exercise on Reference Plane

Aim:
To model the given object according to the drawing by using the Revolve and Shell
command.

Description of the Reference plane:

These reference planes are used where geometry is to be created at some arbitary
locations other the usual faces and planes.

Procedure:
1. Select the front plane, draw the base profile and extrude.
2. Take a reference plane with references (2 references) at corner and side face.
3. Draw the required profile on the sketch and extrude

Result:
Thus the given component is done by using Reference plane.
