PART 1 - GENERAL

DESCRIPTION
A.

This section includes the installation of rammed or jacked steel casing pipe
indicated on the drawings.

DESIGN CRITERIA
A.

Casing shall be steel with a wall thickness not less than 0.75 inches.

B.

Steel shall be ASTM Specification A-139 Grade B (no hydro) and comply with
ASTM A-36 and ASTM A515 grade 60 or ASTM A572 grade 42.

C.

Casing pipe segments shall be specifically manufactured for pipe ramming and
be either:
1.

Permalok casing pipe as manufactured by Permalok Corporation. The


pipe shall have machined ends that are watertight. A silicon sealant shall
be used as a joining sealant.

2.

Casing for full penetration butt welds. Segments shall be nominal length
not random.

Casing calculations shall use a minimum factor of safety of 2.0 .

Casing shall have a minimum inside diameter that:

Permits the carrier pipe to be installed to the designed line and grade and
provides clearances in accordance with Section 02445; and

2.

Minimum backfill between inside of casing sidewall and furthest


projection of the carrier pipe shall be 2.0 inches.

The casing shall be round, smooth, and have flush joints from a single
manufacturer.

General:
1.

Submit in accordance with Section 01300.

2.

Refer to Section 02447 for edge treatment of the lead casing.

Product Data:
1.

Submit casing material certification, shop or working drawings showing


pipe end joints, leading edge treatment, and wall thicknesses.

2.

Submit structural and deflection calculations for the pipe rammed casings.
The Contractor shall submit calculations to determine the thickness
required to withstand earth, groundwater, and dynamic impact installation
forces from the pipe ramming operations. Provide calculations signed and
stamped by an engineer registered in the State of California.

3.

Manufacturers written shipping, handling, storage, and assembly


instructions.

Qualifications:

Casing calculations shall be prepared by a professional engineer licensed


by the State of California. Experience shall include three projects within
the last five years performing similar casing calculations.

Casing Pipe Segments:

Field assembly of water tight mechanical joints shall be made in


accordance with manufacturers written procedures.

Welded joints shall be aligned and true so as to not introduce any bias or
unintended steering action.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.1

MATERIALS
A.

Casing shall be ASTM A-139 Grade B steel, with watertight joints.

Joints shall be:

Permalok mechanical restrained joint.

Water tight full penetration butt welds.

Provide dimensional tolerances include the following:


1.

Roundness: Pipe diameter, as measured along any single plane, shall not
vary more than 1% from the specified diameter.

2.

Circumference: Outside circumference shall not vary more than 1% or inch, whichever is less, from the nominal circumference.

3.

Wall Thickness: Steel pipe sections shall not vary more than 5% from the
nominal wall thickness.

4.

Straightness: Deviation shall not be greater than 1/8-inches along any 10foot length.

5.

Casing segment lengths shall be nominal and not random.

Perform all work in conformance with accepted submittals.
