Dapitan and the Jesuits

4 years exile; Rizal knew about Katipunan; Bonifacio passed messages to Rizal via Rizals
sister, Narcia Rizal-Lopez who lived in the same street as the former; Rizal didnt send any
messages back to Bonifacio
The Katipunan made plans to rescue or seize Rizal as they believed that hes important for
the revolution to succeed; Rizal didnt encourage them
Rizal believes that for a revolution to succeed, time is needed. his aim was liberation
from Spain
Rizals other political aims: Philippine representation in the Cortes; end of friar interference
in government; vacancy in curacies be given to either Filipino or Spanis secular priests; a
general reform of all branches of the admin; an expansion of primary education free from
friar interference; increased pay for men and women teachers; greater division of
government appointments between Spaniard and Filipino; a better moral tone in the admin;
creation of technical schools in provinces
During his last year in Dapitan, he felt that he had nothing more to offer wala ng ibang
plano, destiny had turn its back on him

July 17, 1892: ship Cebu; Rizal was given the choice to stay with the Spanish commandant,
Capt. Ricardo Carnicero or with Father Antonion Obach, a Jesuit priest
Obachs condition: make a public retraction of his religious errors, speak publicly against
filibusterism, make a general confession of his sins, be an example of a man of religion and
as a Spaniard Rizal chose to stay with the commandant
The people of Dapitan liked him
Pastells informed Father Obach and Vilaclara that another priest, father Sanchez, will be
arriving to see if this strayed sheep can be berought back to the right path
Father Sanchez taught Rizal to write poems in Spanish
Father Sanchezs efforts were wasted
Rizal did not attack religion, he attacked the abuses of the Church
The church was later to claim that Rizal retracted his errors against Religion in the last
hours of his life not true!
Scientific Works and School at Talisay
Rizal and Carnicero became friends; In Carniceros letters to Despujol, he was careful
enough to not show how friendly they got
Mahilig sila sa loto; nanalo ng 2nd place; Rizal bought a land in talisay with his share; Rizal
decided to settle down for the time being in Talisay as a farmer
Rizal and Blumentritt continued writing and sending letters; Blumentritt begged Rizal to
write in tagalog
During his stay in Talisay, Rizal was able to discover new species of a frog, a beetle, and one
arboreal lizard, they all bear the Linnaean name rizali

Feb 1893: Sanchez was withdrawn from Dapitan; Pastells was succeeded by Juan Ricart;
Ricart ordered for Carnicero to be transferred; the new commandant was Juan Sitges
Sitges ordered for Rizals food to be delivered to his room instead; Sitges became a firm
advocate of Rizal being allowed to take permanent residence at Talisay
Pinalitan ni Blanco si Despujol their aim was to induce in Rizal a state of complete
resignation to settling down in Dapitan and having nothing further to do with politics

In Aug 1893; Teodora Alonso and Narcisa and Trinidad stayed with Rizal in Dapitan
News: Leonor died of a broken heart Rizal grew pale and kept to his room, with a lock of
Leonors hair tied with a ribbon
November, a man named Pablo Mercado came to Rizal to offer his services in obtaining any
books or writing he might need Rizal was on his guard, he reported this to Sitges it was
found out that the mans name is Florencio Namanan, saying he was sent by the Recollects
He began teaching some Dapitan boys; he earned money by treating patients
Nagtayo ng school: he taught cultivation of plantation, development of self-reliance through
boxing, fencing, swimming, formal subjects such as writing, arithmetic, geometry, Spanish
and English
Rizal wanted his students to be intelligent and courageous; he performs a secret screening
test
Feb 1894, Rizal wrote to General Blanco appealing for liberty. He wanted to have a trial.
Blanco visited him in October and only told him that he can be transferred to nearer
provinces or plead ill-health to transfer to Spain
Feb 1895, he was losing hope until he met Josephine Bracken and fell in love

Daughter of James Bracken but was adopted by George Taufer

Josephine lived with Narcisa and Rizals parents for the mean time in Manila
May 1895, Rizal wrote a letter to Blanco once again; Carnicero came back as the
commandant
After a few days, Josephine came back alone; they can only marry if Rizal retracted he did
not, he treated Josephine as his wife na walang kasal
Josephine got pregnant and bore a stillborn child- a boy a symbol of his life na wala ng
future; in some ways, alam niya na nagging mahina siya at di na dapat niya ginawang asawa

Josephine loved Rizal in a simple, dutiful way; she didnt really understand or knew him
Feb 1895, revolution in Cuba, yellow fever epidemic; Blumentritt suggested that Rizal apply
for volunteer service to the military as a doctor no answer
On the start of 1896, Rizal did everything to improve the school, his house, hospital he
became less and less determined
July 1 1896, a blind man visited Rizal together with a friend. Pio Valenzuela, a member of
Katipunan. He warned Rizal of a revolution and asked him for advice and told him to escape
According to Rizal, the plan was defective because: low funds, insufficient arms and
ammunition, inadequate arrangements for reserves, Bonifacios leadership is not enough

Valenzuela said that it would not be possible to stop the revolution; Rizal advised that
Antonio Luna be the liaison officer between the Katipunan and the rich to provide sources

July 30, Blanco allowed Rizal to go volunteer at Cuba
July 31, Rizal embarked to Cuba, all the people of Dapitan walked him to shore, Chopins
Funeral March was played
