Don't know how I overlooked this for so long. I've got a friend that is looking for a 996 Turbo, I'll have to pass this
thread along to him.

coolant hoses start popping off @ 60k miles (there are 8 to replace i think - drop the engine)
coolant tank heats & cracks after 30k miles
front wheel bearings (sharkwerks just made a post)
2nd-gear pop-out issue
get a boost check
engines are not bullet-proof - check the ECU screws to make sure they were never removed
get computer tested for type 2 revs
and probably a lot more i've forgot
- chuck
Honestly Chuck, I think you've just had a very bad experience with yours, unfortunately
just luck of the draw I guess..
My turbo only had to have a wheel bearing replaced, plugs , a fuse and coolant line that broke... Minor stuff and
was bullet proof so to speak, modded by FVD at stage 3 too...
My GT2, 5 years on and off the track, and is ROCK SOLID... Minor maintenance here and there, just had shift
cables replaced, everything else sound * knock on wood*...
Bottom line is, before a purchase these cars must be checked thoroughly indeed.. BUT, they can check out and in
6 months started having weird/odd failures and or replacements.. You just never know
