INSERT (Interactive Notation System for Effective Reading and Thinking) is a note-taking system that
engages readers in making decisions and reflecting on the text during the act of reading. This system
promotes comprehension monitoring by asking you to insert your ideas into those suggested by the text.
The model asks for you to use up to several different types of notations when reading a text.
During reading, you should constantly be making decisions about your reactions to the text -- I
knew that, I dont understand that, I dont agree with that, I must remember that, etc. These reactions
are noted in the margin of the text using a set of symbols.
If you read a sentence and think This is an important idea, place a * in the
margin
If you read a sentence and think I dont understand this, place a ?? in the
margin
If you read a sentence and you think I knew that, then place a in the
margin of the text next to that sentence.
Continue this with the rest of the reading. You may or may not have a mark for each
sentence or part of the reading.
