~~BUSINESS MEETING~~
This Veterans Day meeting was opened by

silvery plastic tiara. Angelo Costanza read a
portion of the famous poem In Flanders Field,
written in commemoration of the immense
sacrifices during World War I (the War to End
Wars), and led the Pledge of Allegiance.
We had lots of guests: Alka Mulakaluri, Claire
Barney (friend of Barbara Bruner and stocking
worker), Lou Roessler, Linda Campbell, Ann
Damaschino, Libby Schoemehl, Ace of Hearts
Mary Sue Erickson, Ron Schopke, and
speaker Ethan Elkind.
Cliff Dochterman introduced a guest of the
Club, Augustine Gill, a Moraga resident and the
new CEO of the six Rotacare clinics in the Bay
Area. Mr. Gill has worked for the Red Cross in
Russia and in Africa.
Frank May reported that he and Linda took four
grandchildren to the Rotaract Literacy Day
project on the SMC campus last Saturday. He
said that there were about 3 times more children
attending compared with last year. Rotaract is
advised by Mary Volmer, a Paul Harris Fellow.

UCLA-UC Berkeleys grant-funded series of

policy reports on business solutions to combat
climate change. He has a background in the
California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA),
climate change law, environmental justice, and
other environmental law topics. He has a BA
from Brown University in 1998 and a JD from
UCLA in 2006, and has been on the UCLA Law
school faculty since then.
The Centers mission is to connect leaders from
business, government, nonprofits and academia
to address pressing environmental and energy
needs. They issue reports to inform California's
decision-makers on policies necessary for
businesses to prosper in the era of climate
change, and they serve as a conduit to experts
in the field and a clearinghouse for the latest
research on climate change policies.
Ethan acknowledged that man-made climate
change is controversial despite overwhelming
scientific consensus, and their mission is to
produce research and policy reports on ways to
adapt to it. Climate change can affect many
populated areas by increasing (or decreasing)
their average temperature and could change
precipitation patterns.
Storms and weather
events could become more intense and
damaging. Mean sea levels could rise, and
higher water could affect a large segment of the
population.

~~PROGRAM~~
Barbara Bruner introduced our speaker, Ethan
Elkin, the Associate Director of the Climate
Change and Business Program which is a joint
venture of UCB and UCLA Law schools and is
based in Berkeley. He is the lead author of

The Center projects increasing energy demand

as less developed countries increase their
standard of living. A primary goal is to reduce
the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,
since higher concentrations of this gas can
cause more heat to be retained in the
atmosphere. Burning oil and coal fuel is the
worlds primary energy source but generates lots
of CO2, so renewable energy sources are
sought. These include wind, solar, tidal, and
hydro power, although energy from these
sources doesnt match the daily consumer
demand very well.
(solar power is only
generated in daylight, for instance).

California is among the leaders in promoting

energy efficiency, and the annual per capita
energy use in the state has been flat for several
years. The state goal is 33% energy from
renewable sources.

where reports and further information are
available.
