Strategic management practices in the construction industry : a study of Indonesian enterprises
Eprints, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, QLD, Australia May 4, 2011
Authors: Sapri Pamulu
This thesis is an empirical study of strategic management practices in the construction industry. It examines
the dynamic capabilities paradigm within the context of the Indonesian construction industry.
The results of this study provide empirical evidence in support of the notion that a competitive advantage is
achieved via the implementation of a dynamic capability framework as an important way for a construction
enterprise to improve its organisational performance. The characteristics of asset-capability combinations
were found to be significant determinants of the competitive advantage of the Indonesian construction
enterprises, and that such advantage sequentially contributes to organisational performance. If a dynamic
capabilities framework can work in the context of Indonesia, it suggests that the framework has potential
applicability in other emerging and developing countries.
Strategic management of information technology in the construction industry: Case study of a developing
country
IDEA Group Publishing, Hershey, PA, USA May 15, 2005
Authors: Sapri Pamulu, Chandra Bhuta, Samir Shah
This paper presents findings of a research project, which explores the current use of information technology
(IT) in the Indonesian construction Industry. The findings are based on a survey questionnaire taken between
December 2002 and April 2003 among 250 construction companies registered in the National Construction
Industry Development Board (CIDB) of Indonesia. The CIDB has listed and classified these companies as B
category or large company. A total of 48 valid replies were received, representing a response rate of 38%.
The survey includes IT environment and management use of software, hardware, internet applications, staff
competency, investment in IT, benefits gained and problems associated with its implementation, and an
assessment of the exploitation of IT for business strategic purposes. The paper also suggests to aggressively
pushing for a need for the relevant government initiatives that would increase strategic use and adoption of
IT. Government and public agencies should consider policies that encourage the use of IT in the construction
industry, thus making this industry sector more competitive.
Financial ratio analysis of Indonesian construction firms
Fourth International Conference on Global Research in Business & Economics, Bangkok,
Thailand. December 27, 2008
Authors: Sapri Pamulu, Stephen Kajewski, Martin Betts
This paper presents findings of a pilot study, which evaluates financial ratios in the Indonesian construction
firms. The study is an extension of a larger study that is an attempt to explore strategic practices for
Indonesian construction firms that generates a competitive advantage. The findings are based on annual
reports taken from all of construction companies listed in Surabaya Stock Exchange (SSX) Indonesia. The
SSX has classified 6 firms in the construction sector. The research methodology adopted for this study
includes data collection and analysis of firm annual reports and financial statements. There are some methods
and techniques of financial ratio analysis in analyzing corporate performance of construction firms. Modified

traditional ratios such as Liquidity, Leverage, Activity and Profitability ratios are adapted from Construction
Financial Management Association (CFMA) to support different purposes of analysis. When analyzing ratios,
the results are compared with other firms in the same fiscal periods from 2003 to 2007. The analysis reveals
that the Indonesian firms in this study are financially sound, where profits and returns generated from
construction works are still satisfactory. However, this performance can still be sustained if they are able to
manage their maximum pace at which a company can grow revenue without depleting its financial resources.
