Identical in code and layout, MAPS offline is a snapshot of MAPS Online that can
be used standalone on a PC without requiring to be linked to the web. Express
Views, BOM Crusher, and other features of the offline version will be discussed in
the second tutorial. If you dont have online capability, the best course of action
would be to contact your local microchip representative to send you a CD or USB of
the file. Otherwise, just open your browser to the main website and click on the link,
Product Selection Tools or, as before, use the redirect.
The Product Selection Tools page is the product selection archives for printed and
electronic tools. Scroll down to the title, Electronic Media for the downloadable file.
Notice the filename includes the version number and release date. This is extremely
useful in verifying the latest copy on your PC.
To download, click on the link and a screen will appear asking you to open or
save the file. Click Save and put it on the desktop.

Updating

Step-by-step

On startup, MAPS will check for updates:

O

If you see:

O Updated

GUI & data, full install (Quarterly at most)

O Download & install new version, uninstall old version
O

If you see:

O Updated

data only, patch install (Bi-weekly at most)

O Runs silently and overwrites database files
Microchip Advanced Parts Selector (MAPS)

16

Auto-update checking is a feature performed every time the MAPS program is

initiated. If an update is available, there are two possible update prompts:
If on startup, the display states, Latest version of MAPS application is available;
this means there is a full version update with changes to the GUI and databases
that require a full install. The intent is to keep full installs to a minimum and quarterly
at most since these files take time to download.
If on startup, the display states, New data is available; this means only data has
changed, and that there is a patch for the installed database that maybe applied.
The intent is to perform more of these patch installs as the size and speed to update
a database is quick in comparison. The frequency of patch updates will be biweekly
at most.

16

Updating

Step-by-step
O

To run data update, click Yes

Update icon in Taskbar appears

O

When complete icon disappears

Check for updates manually

O
O

Click Updates after running program

If available youll see one of two prompts mentioned

Microchip Advanced Parts Selector (MAPS)

17

Another nice thing about the patch update is that it runs silently in the background.
Assuming this prompt comes up during start-up, click Yes.
An update icon will appear on the bottom-right of your windows screen in the
Taskbar as it performs the install.
When it is complete, the icon disappears.
You can also check for updates manually at any time.
To do this, start the MAPS program and click Updates from the top menu bar. If
one is available, youll see one of two prompts as mentioned.
