Dear Dr. Winter, I have been told I have no bone left
under my dentures. I keep getting sharp stinging pain
when I bite down and my dentures pop out when I
open my mouth even with denture adhesive. What are
my options and how much does this cost?
Dear Jan, I am sorry you are having problems with
your dentures. Teeth maintain bone. When teeth are
removed you can lose 40% of the remaining bone the
first year after tooth loss. This bone loss will continue
every year until implants are placed to stop bone loss.
This means you can lose height of bone and width of
bone continuously. When you wear dentures the
dentures may appear tight but over time as the bone
resorbs the dentures get looser and looser. That is why
dentures should be relined or remade every 3-5 years
to try and maintain a better fit between the denture
acrylic and the bone.
Dentures can move up to 1/2 an inch during a
normal chewing cycle. That movement coupled with
bone loss can quickly lead to exposure of nerves that
can cause pain from denture pressure.
Solutions to nerve pain involve stabilizing your
dentures or moving into "fixed" teeth again. This is
done by placing implants or mini-implants into the
jaws to support your dentures. How many implants
you receive is often dependant upon your budget. I
have written many articles on Upgradeable Dentistry
which is a concept that allows patients to place
implants before bone loss occurs. They can then
continue to add implants over time as their budgets
allow until they have enough support to have a
permanent bridge or "fixed teeth." Placing implants as
soon as teeth are lost helps prevent more costly bone
grafts later on. There are ways of making Snap-OnDentures with a few implants so that the implants can
have attachments that the denture clips to. This
prevents slipping of the teeth and eliminates the need
for denture adhesive which can be quite annoying to
clean out each day. If enough implants can be afforded
then a bar can be made to snap the denture on to and
this allows the implants to be splinted and increases
their strength.

If you have lost too much bone according to your
dentist, there may be grafting procedures you can
undergo to add bone for supporting implants. That
can involve using bone from your chin (chin block
grafts), bone from your ramus (the area by your
wisdom teeth), or using hip grafts to re-grow the
bone. Alternatively, ridge spreading or bone
reduction can be undertaken to try and create a
platform that will allow implants to be placed.

wins soccer championship
The Pilgrim Lutheran Elementary School Boys' Soccer Team won the
Midwest Lutheran Athletic Association Grade School Soccer Championship
on Sunday, Oct. 12th. The team defeated a tea, from Christ the Lord church
in Brookfield, 2 1 in the title game. The soccer team plays in the Midwest
Lutheran Athletic Association Soccer League though Wisconsin Lutheran High
School and went undefeated in league play with a record of 6 - 0. The team
is coached by Brett Kriese and David Porth.

Vrakas wont seek another term

as county executive
Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas
announced he will not seek re-election in the
spring.
After a great deal of consideration and
reflection on what will be nearly 25 years in
elected office this coming April, I have decided not to seek re-election as Waukesha
County Executive, Vrakas said in a statement
issued Nov. 13: I am eternally grateful to the
people of Waukesha County for supporting
me all these years and I feel blessed to have
had the opportunity to serve the county and
state that I love.
Vrakas was first elected county executive
in a special election in 2005. He had been a
state legislator prior to being elected county
executive.
In his statement, Vrakas cited several
accomplishments that occurred in county
operations while he was county executive,
including the reduction of the number of county departments and forming regional partnerships with other governments to reduce costs.
Cooperation, consolidation and partnerships have been cornerstones of our ability to
keep Waukesha the lowest spending per capi-
ta county in the State of Wisconsin, one of

only handful of counties with a AAA/Aaa
bond rating, and one of only a few counties
statewide that have not levied a county sales
tax, Vrakas stated.
His announcement came a day after the
County Board approved the 2015 budget by
a 21-3 vote.
I applaud the Waukesha County Board
of Supervisors for their strong support of the
2015 Budget. The budget they passed this
morning will freeze the county portion of the
property tax bill on a median valued
Waukesha County home and maintains our
role as a low tax leader in the State of
Wisconsin, Vrakas said of the budget shortly
after it was approved.
Gov Scott Walker, on his Twitter account,
commented on Vrakas retirement.
Dan Vrakas is one of the good guys,
Walker said in one Twitter statement. In another, Walker said: Dan Vrakas is a long-time
friend. I wish him well on his next step.

Operating while intoxicated
A 42-year-old Milwaukee man was
taken into custody for operating while intoxicated-first offense at 7:17 p.m. Oct. 25 after
he was stopped for swerving and driving
without headlights at Silver Spring Drive and
Pilgrim Road. He was found to have a bloodalcohol level of .157.
Retail theft
A 36-year-old woman was arrested on
a state charge of retail theft at 1:23 p.m. Oct.
29 after leaving Woodmans Food Market,

for several food items. The merchandise was
valued at $24.28.

Christmas Carol performances: Falls
Patio Players will once again perform the
beloved version of Charles Dickens' classic
"Christmas Carol. Two of the Players own
members, the late Carol Klose and the late
Jack Strawbridge, collaborated to write this
musical version, which encompasses French
and English carols as well as many original
songs. Performances are on Friday, Dec. 5 at
7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6 at 3 and 7 p.m. and
Sunday, Dec. 7 at 1 and 4 p.m. at North
Middle School auditorium. Tickets can be

Community League meeting Nov. 17
The next Community League Meeting will
be Nov. 17 at the Menomonee Falls
Community Center, N152 N8645 Margaret
Rd., with a gathering time beginning at 6:45
p.m. and the meeting starting at 7 p.m.
Chris Krich, noted author, lecturer, and
quilting teacher will return, by popular
demand, as our guest speaker. This will be
her third visit, but she will present an all new
program.
A business meeting will follow our program. New members are welcome.

The Menomonee Falls Public Library will
show two movies in November. The movies
will be in the librarys Meeting/Community

The Miller-Davidson House at Old Falls
Village will be open on Sunday, Dec. 7 from
14 p.m. for the annual Silver Tea. Festivelydecorated in a nostalgic Christmas theme,
Over The River and Through the Falls. The
Menomonee Falls Historical Society will offer
free admission, parking and refreshments for
this event. Donations are gratefully accepted.
A Christmas Cookie Bake Sale will be held in
the Public House. Mrs. Santa will pay a visit
and read stories to the children.
Tour this lovely, restored home which was
once the summer home of Emma Davidson of
Harley-Davidson. Ladies, gentlemen and children will enjoy tea, coffee and homemade
Christmas cookies as they savor the sights
and smells of days gone by. The home will be
decorated by members of the historical society and supported by Bank of Memories &
Flowers and Shady Lane Greenhouse.
The Miller-Davidson house anchors the
22 acre historical park at Old Falls Village.
Built in 1858 in the Greek Revival style popular at the time, the house is built of locally
quarried limestone with mortar lime coming
from the lime kilns. The Miller-Davidson
House, original to the site, is special in many
ways beginning with an unusual arched foundation. In 1935 it was selected by the
Federal Government's Historic American
Building Survey. And in 1973 the National
Register of Historic Places listed this beautiful
early American farm home among those to
be preserved for future generations. The
house has not been restored to its original
state but is presented as a house improved as
lifestyles improved. It now houses an eclectic
decorative arts collection.

Ronald Coppersmith, a Vietnam War
Veteran, was then recognized as the guest of
honor during a presentation from Wally
Kangas, Quarter Master for Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 9496.
Afterward, fifth grade students Kevin
Crum, Kylee Nash, Tae Borg, Grace Block,
Sahil Shah and Samiah Williams participated in a folding of the American flag. That
was followed by Menomonee Falls High
School students Andrew and Anthony
Burzinski performing Taps, and the colors
being retrieved by the Police Department.
The program ended with members of the
Eirenicon Club performing several songs.

It is not uncommon for homes built in the
1970s to have paneled walls. Paneling was
quite popular then, but not so much anymore. If
you have paneling in your home, do not despair.
You can reinvent it with a little elbow grease.
Here are some ideas.
Paint is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to reinvent wood paneling. You
can go with any color you want, and depending upon the look you are after, you can fill the
grooves or leave them unfilled. If you are looking to create stripes, for example, you might
want to leave the grooves as are and use them
as a guide to mark off the stripes. After a light
sanding and cleaning, you will be all ready to
prime and paint.
If paint is not your thing, perhaps wallpaper
is. Wallpaper comes in a variety of texture and
patterns. You can use almost any wallpaper you
want, and the prep work is fairly easy. Just fill the
grooves with joint compound, sand, clean and
apply liner or sizing and the wallpaper.
Plaster is another option, but it will take some
time to do. There are many types available for
novices. For the best results, you should prime the

paneling, attach the metal lath and apply the
plaster as recommended. Depending upon your
needs, you can create a smooth, glossy finish or
an earthy, flat finish.
Love the look of your paneling? Keep it and
give it an update with a new finish or new trim.
You can sand, stain and varnish solid wood paneling just like you would any solid wood furniture
piece. You can even use stencils and painters
tape to create a pattern. Laminate wood paneling is a bit more difficult, but can still be sanded
and stained. The stain may not penetrate evenly,
however, so you might want to experiment in a
corner first. You can create any number of patterns on paneling with molding. Just cut the trim,
nail it to the paneling, putty the holes and paint
or stain the trim as you see fit.
None of these ideas appeal to you? Check
online and at your local hardware store for further suggestions. And remember, if nothing
appeals to you, you can always remove the paneling. Just be aware that what you uncover may
not be in the best of condition. Installing new drywall can be time consuming and costly.
