Embedding ethical values in corporate values

The interview is with Tanya Barman whose is ethic specialist and Mohd Rozaidi whose is
Malaysian Institute of integrity. In this issue, the interviewer told that the one of the important in
this roles is a leader and employee need to support on this which is how they will response and
how they will act ethically. Mohd Rozaidi said that Malaysian integrity was held on 2004 by Tun
Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi. It is the main agenda how to manage the ethical values in
corporate values. There are issues that they were putting 5 targets of agenda which one of them is
increase efficiency public service delivery system.

Tanya Barman also differentiates between business ethic and corporate governance which is
business ethic is a broader field company on employee and corporate governance is a key
component of them. They also explain about the global, ethic agenda and corporate
responsibility about this. There are also dynamic code which are they are apply when have
criminal and also state the CEO responsibility. For example in Enron scandal from UK study
shows that how they are looking more in long term interest of business. Even the code of conduct
is merging old of the time in the dynamic codes that react to what is going on in the broader in
business landscape.

They also state about five principal about regulation and policy. They are working with the rest
of stakeholder likes MACC and Bursa as regulators in promoting the corporate integrity system
in Malaysia. Tanya Barman said there are few processes to exist likes a corporation guidelines
work with some policies, setting code of ethic and also communication program likes round table
executive session and having training program and governance and consult program and ethic
committee and integrity unit and assessment. The effective ways to progress this process is
depends on the CEO because they will conduct the employee. Then the CEO also needs to create
corporate values. Chairman also needs to play the value. They are also promoting with
PEMANDU and the rest of the stakeholder like MACC. They also have a program with CIMA.
They are going to start from big company Multinational companies and DLC. This is one of way
for them to be an aggressive because they have an outline for their program.

The interviewer ask why corporate fraud increase recently when they promote corporate
integrity. And Rozaidi said, the people were not teaches about what they are supposed to know
about it because they just get aware about this situations. Then the step how to improve the
training program about how the effectiveness of the program about their understanding about
their rule in the corporate. The will not know the right n wrong if they are not given a training. I
terms of regulations, Rozaidi said they have to impose the regulation process. They having
forward to improve and they are looking for it. From Tanya Barman views, regulation can
encourage a good business.

There will have a good sign to small company when a big companies like Petronas when the
principle were also invite the vendors to do same things to involve in the project. Of course they
will follow the path. About the leadership, the leader plays the important to determine and drive
the companies. Tanya said, if employees are pressure and do unethical behavior, what to do is
she will guidance them likes discuss with manager and advise them.

Before the interview comes to the end, he also said the effort need to be carried out and Tanya
Barman more concern about long term thinking and also thinking about anything you have in the
business of society. As conclusion, Rozaidi and Tanya said, ethical values in corporate cultures
are important to increase the growth of business.
