A.2 Rationale
With the introduction of the performance diploma, popular music instrumentalists are able to obtain
a recognised professional qualification that has to date been unavailable to them. With the continuing
growth of the popular music industry and increasing number of courses offered at further and higher
education level, these diplomas are designed to highlight the aspects of performing that are needed
to help a performance-based career. These include session work; the ability to perform consistently
to a high standard; the necessity to recognise the importance of publicity and self promotion and to
understand issues surrounding contracts; legal obligations; and health & safety in the work place.
These diplomas are also aimed at professionals already in the field that have, until now, not had the
opportunity to gain a professional qualification.
A.6 Progression
These qualifications are designed to offer direct progression into certain sectors of both the music
business as well as music courses in higher education. These qualifications could be used as additional
entry requirements leading to undergraduate or postgraduate training in popular music in the
UK1 or overseas.
There are currently in excess of 70 undergraduate degree courses which offer popular music performance as
part of their curriculum of study. These include BA Commercial Music Degrees offered at Westminster
University, Bath Spa University, the University of Sussex (in association with BIMM), the University of Paisley,
Salford University, Leeds University.

F.1 Complaints
If candidates or centres have any general complaints to make about the service provided by
rockschool or its centres which do not affect results or grades, please fill in the customer service
feedback form. The customer service feedback form can be found online at www.rockschool.co.uk
or email info@rockschool.co.uk and request a form.
F.2 Appeals
There are two grounds upon which an appeal will be considered.
1. Errors in Procedure
2. Mismatch in marks and comments
First Level of Appeal
The first level appeal will be carried out by the Chief Examiner (in the case of Grade Exams,
Performance Certificates and Performance or Teaching Diplomas) or the Head of External Moderation
(in the case of externally moderated qualifications). They will make a judgement after receiving the
report from the individual examiner or moderator on the case in question.
Once the judgement has been made the appellant will receive written confirmation of the outcome.
If the appeal is upheld, Rockschool may either make an adjustment to the marks or, in the case of graded
examinations, either make an adjustment to the marks or offer a free re-examination at the nearest
examination centre. If a re-examination is offered, Rockschool will agree a time limit with the candidate
concerned to protect the interests of all concerned and reproduce the original conditions as closely as
possible. We will inform you within 28 days of acknowledgement of receipt of the appeal whether the
appeal is successful. In the case of a successful appeal, the offer of a re-examination will terminate the
appeals process, whether or not it is accepted.
Second Level of Appeal
If a candidate is unhappy with the judgements made in the first level appeal, then they have the right
to a second level of appeal. The second level appeal involves a review of the decisions made by the
Chief Examinations Officer or Head of Moderation by the Director of Academic Affairs and a
judgement made about whether the decisions reached in the first level of appeal should be upheld.
Once the judgement had been made the appellant will receive written confirmation of the outcome.
Second level appeals must be made no later than 14 days from the date of the previous decision.
We will inform you within 28 days from the beginning of the second stage of the process whether the
appeal is successful. A fee of 25 will be applicable for each candidate up to a maximum of 125 for five
candidates or more which will be refunded if the appeal is successful.
12
13
If a candidate is unhappy with the decisions reached in the second level appeal, they may take their
appeal to the third level which consists of a review by an independent representative who has no
direct involvement with Rockschool. The decision of the independent representative will be reviewed
by the Senior Management Group and a final decision taken.
Third level appeals must be delivered to the rockschool head office for the attention of the
Examinations Officer, clearly marked as an appeal, no later than 14 days form the date of the previous
decision. The decision of the Senior Management Group is final.
We will inform you within 28 days from the beginning of the third stage of the process whether the
appeal is successful. A fee of 50 will be applicable per candidate up to a maximum of 250 which
will be refunded if the appeal is successful.
