INTRODUCTION
Petroleum Geoscience is an interdisciplinary field that applies
geoscience principles and quantitative methods in the search and
development of commercial oil and gas fields. It includes
interpreting, predicting and managing risks and uncertainties in
exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon resources.
At Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, the MSc Petroleum Geoscience
Programme is tailored to train young graduates and
professionals from the industry in the full range of approaches,
methods and techniques to explore and evaluate new oil and gas
fields and to characterise reservoirs.
The Programme is designed to meet the capability requirement for:

Exploration Geoscience

Reservoir Geoscience

Upstream Economics and E&P Business Demands

In addition, the graduates will be equipped with skills, knowledge

and technology to address a range of exploration and production
challenges, from predicting the likelihood of distribution of
hydrocarbons in a frontier sedimentary basin to quantifying the
complex structural, stratigraphic and sedimentological architecture
of individual reservoirs.

Students of this programme will obtain

access to laboratory facilities at UTP as well as
PETRONAS Research Labs in addition to
diversified software programmes

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor Degree in the field of Geology, Geophysics, Applied
Sciences, Petroleum Engineering or other related Engineering fields
from UTP or other recognised universities.
Applicants with other qualification can be considered if they have
the necessary research and working experience and could show
capabilities to pursue postgraduate studies.
Minimum CGPA of 3.00 (or equaivalent). Lower CGPA can be
considered if the candidate has relevant industrial experience (3 years
or more).
English proficiency: TOEFL score of 550 or IELTS band 6 or MUET band
4. Exemption may be provided for candidates who are native English
speakers or holding a degree with English as the medium of
instruction.

COURSE STRUCTURE
The curriculum is meticulously developed with inputs drawn from
the experience of Institut Francais du Petrole (IFP) Paris and experts from the oil and gas industry in Malaysia and other parts
of the world. The programme is also designed to accommodate
working professionals who would be able to utilise their work
experience on projects. For fresh graduates, there will be
opportunities to work on real project with various petroleum
companies.
There are 14 modules including fieldwork, 4-months industry project
and 2 management electives to be completed over 3 semesters.

1997, has grown to be one of the more prominent private
universities in Malaysia. Offering a wide range of
industry-relevant engineering and technology programmes at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, UTP has produced
more than 9500 graduates and currently has an enrolment of
5,700 undergraduates and 1,250 postgraduates from over 55
countries around the world. UTP complements its engineering
and technology programmes with quality education in the
areas of management and the humanities, with the aim of
producing well-rounded graduates exhibiting excellent
leadership qualities and communication abilities.
Rated as Tier 5 (Excellent) University for the year 2011 Rating
