Abstract

Abstract
The Quiapo Church, a unique Catholic church of dis8nc8ve piety and prayer to
the Nuestra Senor de Nazareno plays a vital role in the urban se?ng of the busy
and congested urban life of Manila. The worship of the faithful in Quiapo church
manifests the strength of the Filipinos faith in the God as Savior from ones
crosses and hardships. The dis8nct environment brought about by the Quiapo
church, the pious and at 8mes near fana8c community, boundaries stand
prominent in the Philippines church se?ng. The An8polo City plays a vital role in
the community life, iden8ty and devo8on for Filipinos traveling overseas. Like the
Quiapo Church, the religious shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage has a
history that dates back to the 1500s Spanish colonial period.
The paper shall have its roots on Spa8al incultura8on dened as the process
wherein the liturgical spaces integrate, relate, adapt to the local culture and vice
versa encapsulated in architecture. The evolu8on of the architectural church
design, religious interven8on, image of the church and the eects of culture as it
transforms in 8me shall be analyzed through compara8ve analysis, archival
photographs, semi-structured interviews, and interpre8ve historical and
contemporary research methods.

Scope and Delimitations

Scope of the study The thesis is a specic study so its
scope must be set beforehand. The scope means the
area covered by an idea and the range that the study
could reach.
Delimita2ons of the problem - xed boundary of the
problem. It will state the areas of concern of the
problem in a box which means that variables are stated
and addi0onal variables are not open because a line is
drawn at the middle.

Review of Related Literature

Previous studies, research work that dealt with
the topics that are the same or similar
Previous studies that may have the objec0ves

Example:

review of related literature of any architectural
research study

Case Study
A research work or study that you can use as a CASE Study
That followed the same objec0ve or study as you are wri0ng

The purpose : The real business of Case Study is
par0cularisa0on, not generalisa0on. We take a par0cular case
and come to now it wellthere is emphasis on uniqueness
we emphasize placing an observer in the eld to observe the
workings of the case, one who records objec0vely what is
happening but simultaneously examines its meaning and
directs observa0on to rene or substan0ate those meanings.
(RB Santos, PhD 2010)

Case Study
If you need to know how or why the projects
worked or (did not), Case Study is appropriate
If you want to know more about cases that
demonstrate certain paMerns
(RB Santos 2010)

Theoretical and conceptual

framework
Theore2cal Framework
A theore0cal framework is a collec0on of interrelated
concepts, like a theory but not necessarily so well
worked-out.
A theore0cal framework guides your research,
determining what things you will measure, and what
sta0s0cal rela0onships you will look for.

Theoretical and conceptual

framework
Conceptual Framework
It is a self-dened construct or an intelligently developed
concept out of the rela8onship of variables.
Construct type of concept formulated to link a theory
to another theory or a network of theories. Constructs
are developed from theories .
A conceptual framework shows the rela8onship between
dierent specic constructs that the study wants to
iden8fy and explain.

Site Selection Criteria
AERONAUTICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
Selec8ng a site for a new airport, or evalua8ng how well an exis8ng site can be
expanded to provide a new major airport, is a complex process. A balance must be
achieved between aeronau8cal and air-transport requirements and the impact of the
airport on its environment.
From an aeronau8cal viewpoint, the basic requirement of an airport is that it should
have a rela8vely at area of land suciently large to accommodate the runways and
other facili8es and that this area be in a locality free from such obstruc8ons to air
naviga8on as mountains and tall buildings.
From the viewpoint of air-transport needs, airport sites must be suciently close to
popula8on centers that they are considered reasonably accessible to their users.
Environmental considera8ons, on the other hand, dictate that the site should be far
enough away from urban centres that noise and other deleterious eects on the
popula8on should be kept to acceptable levels. Furthermore, the airport should not
destroy areas of natural beauty or other signicance.

Site Selection Criteria
1) Topography - rela8vely at area of land
2) Area - suciently large to accommodate the runways and other
facili8es
3) Surroundings - free from obstruc8ons to air naviga8on
4) Accessibility - suciently close to popula8on centers
5) Environmental considera2ons
a) far enough away from urban centres that noise and other
deleterious eects on the popula8on should be kept to acceptable

Opportunity Mapping
Opportunity mapping is a research tool used to understand
the dynamics of opportunity within metropolitan areas.
The purpose of opportunity mapping is to illustrate where
opportunity rich communi1es exist (and assess who has
access to these communi8es) and to understand what needs
to be remedied in opportunity poor communi1es.
Opportunity mapping builds upon the rich history of using
neighborhood based informa8on and mapping to understand
the challenges impac8ng our neighborhoods.

Opportunity Mapping
The central premise of opportunity mapping is that residents
of a metropolitan area are situated within an interconnected
web of opportuni8es that shape their quality of life.
Opportunity mapping provides an analy8cal framework to
measure opportunity comprehensively in metropolitan regions
and determine who has access to opportunity rich areas.
This framework will help assess:
what factors are limi1ng opportunity in a community
what measures are needed to remedy these impediments to
opportunity.

In Your Research
Iden0fy Opportuni0es and Threats
Both are outside or in the surroundings of your site
Remember:
Opportuni0es are everything that will produce posi0ve results to
your project (advantages, advantageous facili0es, support facili0es)
Threats are those that will produce problems to your project

Using a Google Map of your Site, locate these opportuni0es

and threats for about 3-10km. radius from your site. You can
use Kevin Lynchs Elements of the City ( landmarks, nodes,
districts, paths, edges) to iden0fy these or make a separate
Image Map.
