1. The deck plating on a Vessel is supported primarily by deck longitudinals and deck
________________.
(A) girders
(B) stanchions
(C) frames
(D) beams
Briefly Justify Your Answer
2. When the longitudinal strength members of a Vessel are continuous and closely spaced, the Vessel is
____________.
(A) transversely framed
(B) longitudinally framed
(C) intermittently framed
(D) web framed
Briefly Justify Your Answer
3. A Vessel having continuous closely spaced transverse strength members is _____________.
(A) longitudinally framed
(B) transversely framed
(C) cellular framed
(D) web framed
Briefly Justify Your Answer
4. On a Vessel, the deck stringer is the outboard most deck ________________.
(A) plating
(B) beam
(C) stiffener
(D) stanchion
Briefly Justify Your Answer
5. A ship 128 meters long has a maximum beam of 20 meters at the waterline and coefficient of
fineness of 0.85. Calculate the TPC at this draft.
6. (A) Construct a displacement curve from the following data:
Draft(m)
3
3.5
4
4.5
5.0
5.5
Displacement (tonnes)
2700
3260
3800
4450
5180
6060
(B) If this ships light draft is 3m., and the load draft is 5.5m., find the deadweight.
(C) Find the ships draft when there are 500 tonnes of bunkers, and 50 tonnes of fresh water and
stores on board.

(D) When at 5.13m mean draft the ship discharges 2,100 tonnes of cargo and loads 250 tonnes of
bunkers. Find the new mean draft.
(E) Find the approximate TPC at 4.4m, mean draft.
(F) If the ship is floating at a mean draft of 5.2m, and the load mean draft is 5.5m., find how much
more cargo may be loaded.
7. Define centre of pressure. The fore peak bulkhead of a ship is triangular in shape with apex
downwards. Its vertical depth is 9m and its width at top is 8m. Calculate
(a) the pressure on the apex of the bulkhead,
(b) load on the bulkhead,
(c) the centre of pressure relative to the top edge of the bulkhead, when the bulkhead is flooded with
sea water on only one side with 5 m head on the top edge.
8. The fuel consumption, in tonne/hour, of a ship is given by the following expression: 1.524 + 0.0015 V3 when V is the speed in knot.
By reducing speed to 13 per cent below the normal, the daily fuel consumption is reduced by 60
tonne.
Calculate
(A) The reduced speed in knot.
(B) The reduced daily fuel consumption, in tonne.
(C) The saying in fuel, in tonne, during a voyage of 2851 nautical miles at the reduced speed.
9. Describe with the aid of sketches any four of the followings: (A) Web frame
(B) Inter-coastal
(C) Margin plate
(D) Meta-centre
(E) Freeboard
(F) Collision bulkhead.
10. Sketch and describe the following types of stem arrangement: (a) Soft nose plate stem.
(b) Rectangular stem bar
(c) Round stem bar.
