To the Dept. of Chemistry, Sudhir Memorial Institute

NAME:

BOARD ROLL NO:

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
This project has been presented after a series of
references, investigations and serial motivation of
my teachers, friends and well-wishers.
This project stands firm over the rigid support of our
respected teachers from the Dept. of Chemistry. I
would have never been able to complete this project
successfully if I was not guided by Mrs.
RumaSaha&Mrs. AtreyiChatterjee. Hope it will
live to the expectations of my teachers.

CERTIFICATE

This is to certify that Manas Roy,

Board Roll no: _________ , a student of class XII,
has successfully completed this project on A

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF
COMMERCIAL ANATCIDS.

EXPERIMENT
To analyse the given sample of commercial
antacid by determining the amount of
Hydrochloric Acid(HCl) it can neutralize.

REQUIREMENTS
Burettes, pipettes, titration flask, conical
flask, beaker, weight box, fractional weight,
NaOH(Sodium Hydroxide), Na2CO3(Sodium
Carbonate), HCl(Hydrochloric acid) and
phenolphthalein.

PROCEDURE
1 litre of approximately N/10 HCl solution
was prepared by diluting 10 mL of the
concentrated acid to 1 litre.
Similarly, 1 litre of approximately N/10
NaOH solution was made by dissolving 4.0
g of NaOH to prepare 1 litre of solution.
N/10 Na2CO3 solution was prepared by
weighing exactly 1.325 g of anhydrous
sodium carbonate and then dissolving it in
water to prepare exactly 0.25 litre(250
mL) of solution.
The HCl solution was standardized by
titrating it against the standard Na2CO3
solution using methyl orange as indicator.

Similarly, NaOH solution was

standardized by titrating it against
standardized HCl solution using
phenolphthalein as indicator.
The various samples of antacid tablets
were powdered and weighed 1.0 g of each.
A specific volume of standardized HCl
was added to each of the weighed
samples taken in conical flasks. The acid
was added in slight excess, so that it can
neutralize all the alkaline components of
the tablet.
2 drops of phenolphthalein was added and
the flask was warmed till most of powder
dissolved. Insoluble material were
filtered off.

The solution was titrated against the

standardized NaOH solution, till a
permanent pinkish tinge was obtained.
