11 C OK so football is play/ed on a 100 yard field about the size of a soccer
field [SI-1].
12 C There are three ref/s for each game, two of them on the sideline/s,
which they mark the first down/s, which I/'ll get into later [SI-3].
13 C And (player/s usually wear well) player/s have to wear pad/s on their
upper and lower body/s and a helmet [SI-1].
14 C And many of the helmet/s now have computer sensor/s in them so that
(head injury/s can) the force of (the f*) the hit that the person
take/3s can be calculate/ed by the computer/s so that if the head injury
is too severe the player should be taken out and test/ed for
concussion/s [SI-5].
15 E Hm.
16 C (Um) many player/s obviously would stretch before the game so that they
would/n't (um like[FP] you[FP] know[FP]) cramp up as many people in
athletics do [SI-3].
17 C And once everything is set up, once the ref/s are set up and (the) they
have their first down marker/s and the flag/s, the two team captain/s go
into the center of the field [SI-4].
18 C And they flip a coin to start to win [SI-1].
19 C (The home team no) the away team will (ah) call it up in the air [SI-1].
20 C And if they win it, then they get to say if they want to kick off first
or if they want to receive first [SI-4].
21 C Or if the home team win/3s, then they get to choose as well [SI-2].
22 C And then (um) once this is decide/ed then the object of the game is
obviously to score the most point/s to win [SI-2].
23 C (Um) there are many way/s to score [SI-1].
24 C (The) there/'s[EW:there_are] three way/s actually [SI-1].
25 C (Ah the first would probably be) the most well known would be a
touchdown, which is where after the ball is kicked off from across the
field (the people receive) the (ah) receiving team take/3s the ball
[SI-4].
26 C And they have four down/s to cross a certain line, which is ten yard/s
from where they start/ed [SI-3].
27 C (Um th*) and then if they cross it, then they start out with another
first down, which the object is to get the ball to the other end of the
field into the end zone [SI-3].
28 C And then once you get into the end zone you score six point/s [SI-2].
29 C And you/'re allow/ed an extra kick into the field goal bar/s which would
be one point [SI-2].
30 C But if you kick/ed it from farther, (then after you score/ed a touchdown
like) if you did/n't score a touchdown (you still) you could still kick
into the end zone if you are too far from the first down (on the fourth)
on the fourth down [SI-4].
31 C (So) and then if you make it in that one, it/'s three point/s [SI-2].
32 C The last way to score which almost like never happen/3s in professional,

highschool, or any football is a safety, which is where the team with

the ball is tackled back in their own end zone [SI-4].
And then the defensive team score/3s two point/s [SI-1].
And the offensive team punt/3s off to the defensive team [SI-1].
(Um) Let's see [SI-1].
There are many position/s that you can play in football [SI-2].
The most important in offense are[EW:is] the quarterback which throw/3s
the ball to the receiver/s[EW:receiver] which is also another important
player [SI-3].
There/'s[EW:there_are] widereceiver/s [SI-1].
There/'s[EW:there_are] runningback/s [SI-1].
And there/'s[EW:there_are] tightend/s who are (the) like the main
receiver/s [SI-2].
And then there/'s also the halfback who can be a receiver [SI-2].
But the halfback and the fullback can also be pass/ed[EW:handed] off the
ball [SI-1].
And then they can run it instead of (it) the ball being thrown [SI-2].
And then two of the major defensive position/s would be the cornerback
which (is) they guard the widereceiver/s trying to block the wide
receiver/s from catching the ball that the quarterback throw/3s and the
saftey/s who try to tackle the quarterback before (um) he can (you[FP]
know[FP]) throw the ball [SI-5].
And if the quarterback is tackled before the ball is thrown (then the ah
well) then they lose yard/s [SI-3].
(I mean) they have to go farther than ten yard/s to get the first down
[SI-1].
OK.
(Um) let's see [SI-1].
The game is play/ed in four fifteen minute quarter/s [SI-1].
But each team has three timeout/s per half [SI-1].
So it usually take/3s longer also because the clock stop/3s when the
ball is run out of bounds [SI-3].
So it/'s usually a strategy if you/'re behind to run the ball out of
bounds instead of being tackled when you/'re lose/ing and you have very
little time to catch up [SI-4].
Let's see [SI-1].
(Um other strate* oh there/'s) there/'s many rule/s as well [SI-1].
And some of the major one/s include no grabbing of the face mask which
is on the helmet because (that/'s just) you could basically swing
somebody around [SI-3].
And it can (s*) like damage their neck [SI-1].
And then (um rid*) widereceiver/s cannot push off the cornerback/s to
(catch) catch the ball because then (they could) like if the cornerback
was stand/ing here and the ball/'s over here, the cornerback can come
around usually and get the ball from them [SI-4].
But if they push/ed off him, first of all the cornerback would not be
able to guard them [SI-2].
Plus it would give the widereceiver/s an extra boost to catching the
ball which would/n't be fair [SI-2].
And (um) once the ball is thrown you cannot hit the QB [SI-2].
Otherwise it/'s roughing of the pass which result/3s in a first down and
a ten yard penalty which XX hurt.
But the worst penalty the defense can get is pass interference which is
hitting the receiver (bef*) like after the ball is thrown, but before
the receiver has had a chance to touch the ball because that result/3s
in as many yard/s as the receiver would have gain/ed by catching the
ball being given to the offensive team [SI-7].
(Um) there are some strategy/s that every team like use/3s such as on
the fourth down if they/'re too far to get a field goal or they/'re not

close enough for the touchdown they will punt the ball off to the other
team like so that the team has many more yard/s to run than they would
(if they just you know gave a) if they just like had a turnover [SI-8].
And (um there/'s oth*) like on the fourth down you can also do a field
goal, as I said instead of running it for a touchdown if you/'re below
fifty yard/s [SI-3].
But if you/'re (fifty farther away fr* you f*) more (than) than fifty
yard/s away from the end zone you want to (ah) punt it [SI-2].
And then (um) another thing is (if you/'re behind or if you/'re win/ing
by only if) if the game is tied up <> instead of (a) kicking a field
goal after the touchdown, (you can do ah) ((I can/'t remember what it/'s
call/ed)) (it/'s ah y* OK well) you can throw the ball to a receiver
[SI-3].
<Mhm>.
And that/'s worth two point/s instead of one [SI-1].
So (that n*) that case you/'ll have an eight point lead which is much
harder to make up than a seven point lead because (you they hav*) they
would have to do that too to tie the game up [SI-3].
And then (um) let's see [SI-1].
Another thing that is/n't done as often, but (i*) it/'s usually done on
(the like) the fourth down in the fourth quarter when somebody/'s
lose/ing by like three point/s, (it/'s) it/'s a fake [SI-4].
(Or ah) like you can do a fake punt, pass [SI-1].
Or you can do a fake fieldgoal where they/'ll set up for a field goal
[SI-2].
But then the fieldgoal kicker or the punter will run it or throw it
which can also sometime/s result in a disaster because you know (there)
kicker/s and punter/s are not meant to throw or run the ball [SI-4].
But you know (it/'s kind of like) it help/3s [SI-2].
And then another thing you can do is (l*) the position/s (are kind of)
you can mess around with them [SI-3].
Like (you can have) there/'s a play where you have the wide receiver on
your right side run all the way around back [SI-2].
And then you/'ll pass it off to him instead of the halfback which
usually confuse/3s the defense [SI-2].
And then everybody/'s all over the place [SI-1].
OK.
Or you can do a halfback pass which you give the ball to the halfback
[SI-2].
And he/'ll throw it [SI-1].
And the quarterback can run [SI-1].
But usually the quarterback would stay back because they would/n't want
him to get hit [SI-2].
Yeah.
