The SBA has many great
events coming up before
the end of the semester.
This week we have a
canned food drive whose
success depends directly
on you! Please help
those in need while at
the same time helping
your section in the
competition for the Side
Bar gift card. Next week
ask your questions and
make you opinions
heard at Mondays Town
Hall meeting.

Alumni Spotlight
Matthew Fisher --- Class of 2008
Matthew Fisher, a member of the class of 2008, is
currently the Associate/Chair of Health Law Group
at Mirick, OConnell, DeMallie & Lougee, LLP in
Worcester, MA. Interview conducted by SBA Alumni
Affairs Committee co-director Eunice Aikins-Afful.
Where did you attend undergraduate?
I attended Haverford College.
What journals/activities/concentrations did you
participate in at Suffolk Law?
Journal of High Technology Law
American Constitution Society
What do you consider the best part of your job?
The ability to see a constantly changing variety of issues that are raised by clients. I
constantly have the opportunity to delve into new areas because a client raises a
question that is novel to me or a slight variation on a usual theme. The variety is part
of what makes practicing really interesting and enjoyable.
What type of attorney did you want to be upon entering Suffolk Law?
I did not necessarily intend to practice law. Initially, I wanted to work in a
legislature and be involved with drafting and implementing laws and policies.
What was your favorite class while at Suffolk?
Even though I do not practice in litigation, I really enjoyed the Trial Advocacy class.
The opportunity to run through all phases of a trial and then actually perform a mini
trial was very interesting.
Who was your favorite professor?
Louis Schulze.
What is your greatest professional achievement?
Receiving the opportunity and support from my law firm to pursue the
establishment of a health law practice group, which had not previously existed at my
5

firm in a formal manner. I was also honored to be named Chair of the group, which
clearly placed the responsibility of development on me.
Who is your favorite Supreme Court Justice, living or deceased?
I always enjoyed reading opinions by John Marshall and from his Court. Chief
Justice Marshall is a common choice, but for many good reasons.
Any interview tips?
Be yourself and try to relax as much as possible. An interview is a stressful event for
everyone, but if you try to engage in an open conversation with the interviewer it
can help put both people more at ease.
One piece of advice?
Take time to figure out what you like to do and then go after that goal. It is not
necessary to graduate and start practice with a single minded goal, be open to new
experiences and be willing to change your mind.
