Michael:
I am thirty years old, rather tall and I have dark eyes and long brown hair. I wear casual clothes as I teach students in a
relaxed atmosphere. I enjoy my job because I get to meet and help so many different people from all over the world. During
my spare time, I like playing tennis, which I play at least three times a week. I also love listening to classical music and I
must admit that I spend a lot of money on buying new CDs! I live in a pretty seaside town on the Portuguese coast. I enjoy
eating great Portuguese food and laughing with the likable people who work in the restaurant where I usually go.

Guinness, the famous stout (dark beer), is made here. Dublin has the largest stout brewery in the world and makes 450

Dublin was a Viking city called Dyflin. The Viking Splash Tour is a ride in an amphibious truck which goes on land as well as
on (or under) water mega-cool! They use a Viking theme as a basis for the tour, encouraging passengers to wear Viking
helmets and 'raid' the city by roaring at 'the Celts'! The tour takes about 75 minutes and you can see the main sights of
Dublin and go for a splash. Really astonishing and wet!

Today we want to know how much our listeners know about healthy food. In the studio, weve got two listeners who
want to test what they know: Alana and Liam.
Alana and Liam: Hi!
Ben: OK, guys. So, do you think you know a lot about healthy eating?
Alana: I think I know quite a bit.
Liam: Yeah, I hope I do.
Ben: Well, weve got five questions. And for the person who gets the most questions correct, theres a prize: this really big box
of doughnuts. Not at all healthy, but delicious. Are you ready?
Alana: Yes, this is my buzzer.
Ben: Liam?
Liam: Heres my buzzer.
Ben: OK. first question. According to experts, how often should you eat fish?
Is it once a week, twice a week or every day?
Alana: Erm, I think once a week.
Liam: Its every day.
Ben: And the answer is ... twice a week. But dont worry, heres question two.
How much water should you drink in a day? 1 litre, 2 litres or three litres.
Liam: Three litres. Definitely.
Alana: Is it one litre?
Ben: Oooh, wrong again! They say we need to drink two litres a day.
Alana and Liam: What?
Alana: Really?
Liam: Thats so much!
Ben: Question three. What contains the most vitamin C? Potatoes, broccoli or oranges?
Liam: Its oranges.
Ben: Youre right! Well done. Oranges have the most vitamin C. Question four. Which of these foods does not contain
protein? Eggs, meat, cucumber?
Alana: Me first.
Liam: Oy!
Alana: Ha, Im faster. Its cucumber.
Liam: Oh, thats my answer too. Easy!
Ben: Thats right. Cucumber doesnt contain protein. And heres the final question. Its one point

Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Alana: Its dinner.
Liam: No, its breakfast. It gives you the energy you need for the day.
Ben: Breakfast is the correct answer! So thats two points for Liam and just one point for Alana. Well done, Liam. You win
this lovely box of doughnuts.
Liam: Oh, wow! Thanks.

Lets Move!
The Wanted, Carly Rae Jepsen, Bella Thorne, and Austin Mahone are just a few of the celebs who recorded a music
video to get kids across the country to get up and move!
Michelle Obama is the one who has started a campaign called Lets Move. She wants American kids to eat better and be
more active. We dont want an unhealthy future for our kids or our country, she says. We have to act.
Whats the campaign doing? Its introducing healthier food, such as salad bars, into school canteens across the country. Its
building more sports facilities and finding safe ways to cycle or walk to school.
Mrs Obamas famous friends are helping out too. Beyonc has made a dance routine DVD for US school students. But not
everyone thinks its a good idea. Some people say, Let parents and families decide what to eat. Its not the governments
business what people put on their plates.
Do the students like the new salad bars as they wait in the lunch line? Yes, says pupil Luciano Cabrera of Miami. Salad
bars are important because salads are nutritious and help you and your bones grow.
Americas problem
The statistics are scary. Over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates have tripled and one in three kids is
overweight. This can lead to diabetes, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure and asthma in children. This initiative
wants to solve the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.

The Internet
Presenter: Today were talking to two students, Cathy and Mark, about the Internet. Lets start with you, Mark. Do you like
surfing the Internet?
Mark:
Yes, in my free time, I really like surfing the Internet. When I get home from school, I turn on my computer, wait
until it boots up completely, and then I go online.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy:
I dont spend much time surfing the web; only when I need to. I have used the Internet for some projects and
homework assignments. I used the Internet for revision, for my GCSEs, and that was really useful, to be able to
get online answers. I found that incredibly helpful. But you might have to trail through hundreds of sites until you
find an actually relevant site.
Presenter: So, do you think the Internet is a useful tool for students?
Mark:
Yes, of course its useful for anyone. The advent of the Internet has vastly changed the way in which people
search for and access information. News travels more quickly than ever, and current affairs can be discussed all
over the world instantaneously via forums, blogs, and social networks.
Presenter: Now theres the question of social networks. How long do you spend on social networking sites every week?
Mark:
Longer than I should. I have to confess that I check my account every day. I chat with my classmates and
friends almost every day. I have lots of friends, but I dont accept just anyone to be my friend; it has to be
someone I know and trust.
Presenter: What about you, Cathy?
Cathy:
Oh, Ive opened an account, but I dont use it much. I dont like virtual friends. Many friends you meet on a
social networking site arent really friends: theyre people youve met through other people for five minutes at a
party. And then they share everything online. They post photos and everyone is trying to look so cool in their
photos and its so fake, not who they really are. Everyone wants you to think theyre having a great time and
are so happy. Ridiculous.
Presenter: Well it seems that you dont really like social networks or dont like them at all!

Leisure time
In my free time I usually play basketball, football or volleyball. I can play with my friends and make new friendships, which is
always good. I also love to play games on the computer or the Internet. There is plenty of useful information on the Internet
and I can chat and share games with my schoolmates. When Im on holiday, I normally go to the beach with my friends or
travel abroad with my parents. We go sightseeing and I always take many beautiful pictures because they help me to
remember the places we visited and the good time we spent together.

What is more British than the Queen, a cup of tea or the Beatles?
Er ... red London buses?
No! Heres a clue: You can eat it.
Ah, then it must be fish and chips.
Correct! In two different surveys, people said the most British thing was fish and chips.
And here are three fish and chip facts.
One. Britains first fish and chip shop opened more than 150 years ago, in 1860 in London!
Two. Fish and chips are Britains favourite takeaway!
Three. A portion of fish and chips has 595 calories thats fewer than pizza or a burger and chips.
Now, Jim, heres the big question what do you have on your fish and chips? Do you have ketchup or do you
have salt and vinegar?
It has to be salt and vinegar.
Me, too! Lets see who agrees with us. Our reporter Alan is outside a fish and chip shop near the studio. Hi, Alan!
Hi, Jenny. Theres a delicious smell coming from this fish and chip shop, which is called Mr Chips.
Is it busy?
Its lunchtime, so its very busy. Theres a queue outside. Three students have just bought their fish and chips.
Excuse me, can I ask you a question?
Yes, but hurry up Im starving!
What did you put on your fish and chips ketchup or salt and vinegar?
Always ketchup you cant have chips without ketchup!
How about you?
Definitely salt and vinegar. Its a crime to put ketchup on fish and chips.
So thats one for ketchup and one for salt and vinegar. Our third student gets the deciding vote.
I used to live in Wigan, in north-west England and up there; we have gravy on our chips, or curry sauce! But they
dont serve it here in London, so now I have ketchup!
So, Jenny, ketchup wins here at Mr Chips. I havent had any lunch yet, so Im going to get some chips!
Good idea! Thanks Alan!

Ftima Lopes
Ftima Lopes is a famous Portuguese fashion designer. She was born on March 8th, 1965 on the Portuguese island of
Madeira. She was born and grew up in its capital city, Funchal. Since an early age she showed an interest in fashion and
during her adolescence, unhappy with what the shops had to offer in terms of clothing, started to design her own clothes.
Being fluent in English, French and German, she worked as a tourist guide for a local travel agency.
In 1990 Ftima moved to Lisbon, where she believed she could better pursue a career as a fashion designer. With a
friend she opened a boutique named "Versus", which sold mainly clothes from international designers.
In 1992 Ftima Lopes launched her own brand. She presented her first collection and opened the first Ftima Lopes
boutique.
In 1996, the designer opened her first international store in Paris and also expanded to other areas.
At the same time she began to diversify her collections by creating bags and shoes for both men and women.
In December 1998, she started the management of the model agency "FACE MODELS" in Lisbon.
In March 1999 Ftima Lopes became the first Portuguese fashion designer to take part in Paris Fashion Week, seeing
her creations along side the major international fashion designers.
Always irreverent, in 2000 she surprised the world by appearing on a catwalk herself in Paris wearing the world's most
expensive bikini, made out of gold and diamonds, with an estimated value of one million dollars.
In 2003 she opened her first brand store in the United States, located in Melrose Avenue in the city of Los Angeles.
Ftima Lopes is responsible for the official outfits of the Portuguese football team.
She has been recognized with several awards.

Listen to Mr Logan, a school headmaster, talking on the radio about the creation of a Green Club.
Our school is going to create a Green Club.
First, of course, the Club must have a name. This name is going to be chosen by the students at the first meeting.
This is a club for children and teenagers between the ages of eight and seventeen who want to improve the environment.
The most important factor of course is that the students should be interested and willing to take action.
Members can participate in workshops, field trips and interact with experts on various environmental issues they can
develop projects and other activities.
They will help solve environmental problems and make new friends too.
For teachers, it is a wonderful opportunity to create awareness; shape attitudes and help students participate in activities
in the real world.
The club will be free and the only thing they need to bring next Monday are gloves. We are going to plant some trees
around the school playground.
If you are interested, you can join us and make a difference.
Be a part of the change.

TIME OUT
Unusual Hobbies
People discover or invent the oddest activities to occupy their time never wondering if what they're doing is actually a
waste of time or not. I collect plain, glossy chocolate wrappers, but only because I have a major crafts project on my mind,
so its not so weird, right? Some people do the strangest things, and somehow get others involved as well.
Have you ever wanted to step out of the crowd and do something different? Are you the kind of person who likes the
crazy side of life? Then the unusual hobbies listed here in this report will be quite helpful.
UFO Spotting
A lot of people claim to have seen a UFO (unidentified flying object) and a smaller number have tales of meeting an ALF
(alien-life form) or even being abducted by extraterrestrials. Read through some books or browse through the web, and find
out about places that have a maximum number of sightings. Get a good pair of binoculars and a video camera to record
anything that you may spot. But dont take foolish risks: go in a group, and always ask permission before you enter private
property.
Starting a Fan Club
Gathering a group of people who find a common interest in, say, a famous sportsman or sportswoman, or actor or
actress, or band or singer would seem to be fun. You could start up your own club where the fans can get together and
watch documentaries about your heroes and heroines, movie marathons or concerts for hours on end over the weekend.
Decorate the fan club room with posters and memorabilia that you can browse around. You can buy such things from
souvenir stores or second-hand shops, or even bring them from the celebrities hometowns. Celebrate their birthdays, read
up on them extensively and tour the country to catch a glimpse of your idols in the flesh. And, of course, dont forget your
cameras and autograph books!
Tea/Coffee/Chocolate Wrappers Collection
Travel the country or around the world (or go to specialist shops in your town) looking for exotic blends of coffee, tea and
chocolate products keeping the packaging (tins, jars, packets and wrappers) for collection purposes. You can add details
below each one, like where you got it from and the date when you bought it. You can write an account of how these products
are grown, processed and served. If you do it well and send it to the manufacturers, they will probably send you a letter of
thanks and they might even send you a box of their products to share with your friends.

Part 1
Interview with Sylvia Earle
Ever since she was knocked over by a wave as a little girl, oceanographer Dr Sylvia Earle has been fascinated by the
ocean. One of the world's best known marine scientists and a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence, Earle loves to
dive deep into the ocean. She has spent much of her life in or under the waves. Now in her effort to save the oceans, she
wants to make it uncool to eat a tuna fish sandwich and she also wants to understand the impact that humans have on the
ocean each time we eat seafood or use pesticide on the garden bugs.
Part 2
How did you get to be a scientist or explorer?
Earle: It was easy. I started out as a kid and never did grow up. The best scientists and explorers have the attributes of kids!
They ask questions and have a sense of wonder. They have curiosity. Who, what, where, why, when, and how! They
never stop asking questions and I never stop asking questions just like a five-year-old.
What do you daydream about?
Earle: Going under water...Saving the ocean...Being a fish Or a blue whale, the biggest animal on Earth and to sense
sound that has travelled over hundreds, maybe thousands of miles. I daydream about that, doesnt everybody?
What is the best place you have ever travelled to?
Earle: Its always the next place. And I love to go back to the places I have known over the years, because one of the things
that motivates me above all else is to do whatever I can to make the world aware of how much is changing and how
fast its changing, and what the consequences are for us.
The impact that humans, our species has had on the Earth since I was a child is greater than during all preceding
human history put together. The pressure that we are putting on the land, the air, the water, and wildlife is severe. The
natural environment that keeps us alive has been stressed significantly.
I have had the privilege of spending more time than others in the ocean and seen things that others havent. People
need to know. You cant care if you dont know and most people simply dont know.
Why is the ocean so important to life on Earth?
Earle: The ocean is the basis of our life support system. Take away life in the ocean and we dont have a planet that works.
What is the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you?
Earle: Dont take no for an answer and find out what you want to do and then find a way to make it happen. You can spend
many lifetimes fulfilling the dreams of others. But if you have a dream of your own, dont wait. Just find a way to make
that dream come true. Dont let people say its impossible or its foolish.
What cant you travel without?
Earle: I rarely travel without a camera. I am not a photographer, but taking photographs helps me to remember and to
document. Oh, and a bathing suit.
What can we do to help the ocean?
Earle: The ocean is vulnerable. What we do or dont do will make a difference.
The first thing you need to do is ask yourself who am I? What do I love? What am I good at? If you are good with
words, then use those words. If you are good with numbers, use numbers. If you play a musical instrument, write a
song. If you are a teacher, use that talent. Adults, take a kid to a wild place by the sea. If you are a kid, grab an adult
and take them somewhere and show them the future of the ocean or a lake or a river through your eyes.
