Description
The past year was a very challenging one for markets across the world. In her
annual review, Professor Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, the director-general of the
Nigerian Stock Exchange, gives a report on the performance of securities listed
on the exchange.
In spite of the difficulties, such as foreign fund manager exits from the NSE,
there were some encouraging signals of continued faith in the market as a prime
source of raising capital as a good number of companies were listed on the
exchange.
The director-general also discussed plans for the coming year, including the
launch of tradeable indices. According to her, this would facilitate the
creation of new financial products such as exchange traded funds.
Overall, while 2008 was a tough year for investors on the exchange, the D-G's
report shows that the fundamentals for strong growth in future remain solid, and
that the market has only suffered collateral damage from the crises in developed
markets.
