The more I practiced and

studied the Kata the
more I thought about its
raison dtre in conjunction with trying to trace
its history.
The first obvious consideration was that the use
of finger-tips and singleknuckle demonstrated
clearly that the targets
were Kyusho points - vulnerable areas - demanding accuracy rather than
brute force.
I then learned - although it
has been difficult to ascertain the truth - that it seems
that this Kata was in the
repertoire of Master (Bushi)
Matsumura. From him it
apparently passed to his
student Master Itosu.
You have to know a little of
this masters importance to
understand the significance
of this.

Its use of strange techniques , however, demanding more specialist anatomical knowledge and theory of
vital points usage, plus its
inherent less flamboyant
style, soon led to its being
relegated to the lessfrequently practiced group
of Kata.
At some point following this,
the Kata became known as a
Womens Kata and thus it
became even less considered

not!
Later, Master Funakoshi
changed the name of the
Kata to: Shoin (a study
place within a Temple) but
this was never generally
accepted, even by his own
students.
There is a strong ebb and
flow feel of power in the Kata, plus a great stress on
using fundamental principles and the vital points.
Thus it is a truly important
Kata for all - male and female alike - who wish to understand the effective way
for a smaller person to withstand and defeat the attacks
of a much more powerful
one. ~ Vince Morris

John always had a keen interest in practical Bunkai
and pressure point strikes
especially after seminars
with Sensei Vince Morris
who influenced his thinking
in the 90's with regard to
how karate should change
training concepts to come
more in line with the more
practical aspect of karate as
opposed to the "traditional"
aspect which had moved
away from the original intent of the art.
With diligent training and
advice from Sensei Vince,
John was able to work
around the knee injury and
successfully grade for 4th

Sad Loss
We have just learned of the sad loss of sensei Brian Millward.
We have no details as of yet, but Brian has been a stalwart
supporter even before the creation of Kissaki-Kai. He will be
sadly missed, not only by family and immediate friends, but by
those of us who got to know him over the years!
