Answer all the Following Questions: (Total 100 Marks)
Question (): (20 marks)
1- Why does the boundary layer become thicker as the distance from the leading edge increase? And
why does the flow in the boundary layer change from laminar to turbulent? (10 marks)
2. A thin flat plate with a 3 m beam arid 3 m long is immersed in a stream of air moving at a constant
velocity. Assume that the surface is hydrodynamically smooth and the boundary layer is forced to
be turbulent from the leading edge. If the total frictional resistance (Rr) for the plate is measured as
32N, determine the velocity of the air and the thickness of the boundary layer at the trailing edge of
flat plate. v4, 1.5*10° m’/sec and pay 1.2 kg/m’ (Hint: Remember to use two sides of flat plate
in your solution). (10 marks)
Question (11): (20 marks)
1- Define the following terms: (10 marks)
a- No-slip condition ’b- Flow separation
¢- Inviscid flow region d- Reynolds stresses
e- Hull speed
2- Explain the GeoSim method of Telfer, which is one of the methods of extrapolation which can be
used to predict the ship resistance from model results, indicating the advantages of it. (10 marks)
Question (111): (20 marks)
1- Define the following terms: (10 marks)
a-Fully developed sea b- Characteristic wave height
c- Swell d- Wave spectrum
e- Apparent zero-crossing period in irregular waves
2- Discuss the technique which can be used to predict the added resistance due to waves of a ship ina
particular seaway. (10 marks)
Question (1): (20 marks)
‘ANile Barge with a flat bottom plate ~of area (L x B) - is advancing at a constant forward speed of
(V) ms, The difference between the depth of the water and the draft of the barge is a narrow vertical
‘gap of thickness (f), where, h<<
