Year 9 – Dance Styles Investigation – My style is………………

Task 1:
In your workbook list 10 open-ended questions that you want to answer about your dance
style whilst completing this assignment. These questions must be pre-approved by me
before you start researching. NB: One of these questions must have an international focus e.g.:
perhaps you tell us that the ballet language is in French or if focussing on Aboriginal dancing talk about the
countries that Bangarra Dance Theatre have performed in, or so forth.
Presentation is up to you: PowerPoint, Poster, Booklet etc. Whatever you do don’t forget
pictures! - and label them.

Task 2: Written Review

You must find a DVD/Video/Youtube copy of a performance of your dance style, view it
and then review it, thinking about the following things:
- Did you find the piece entertaining?
- Was the piece performed well?
- Was the ‘stage area’ used in different ways? Eg: levels, all areas used etc?
- Was the piece a solo or an ensemble piece?
- What did you specifically like about the piece?
- Anything you didn’t like?
- How are expressive skills used?
- Are movement choices appropriate?
- Are production technologies used effectively?
- Describe and discuss ways dance piece communicates and challenges ideas.
- Use dance terminology

Task 3: Speak Out

For your Speak Out you are to give us a very brief introduction on your dance style but
the focus is on presenting your review. You should show the piece you are reviewing to
the class, or a section of the piece. Through your Speak Out you need to engage your
audience and use dance terminology.
In addition to this you will need to show consideration for others as they present their
Speak Outs, provide constructive feedback to another on their Speak Out and fill in the
student comment section on the Speak Out handout. If you are aiming to achieve an A or
a B make your presentation interactive with the audience e.g.: teach us some dance step
or anything else interactive, use your imagination!

Task 4: Rubric
Set Learning Goals by colouring in rubric with one colour and assess how you went at the
completion of assessment by colouring in with another colour.

Task 5: Bibliography
A bibliography must be included with this assignment, please use the NAPPY method.
Please! Do not copy and paste from the Internet etc, or you will have to resubmit the
whole assignment.
