STATLIT Exercises on Probability

1. In how many ways can 6 people be lined up to get on a bus?

2. How many ways are there to select 3 candidates from 8 equally qualified recent graduates for openings on an
accounting firm?
3. A coin and a die are tossed. Then a card is picked from a standard deck. How many results are possible?
4. A freshman has 4 examinations to take and there are 10 examination periods available. How many possible
arrangements are there of his examination schedule?
5. When tossing two dice, there are six possible even values (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12), and only five possible odd
values (3, 5, 7, 9 and 11), and hence, even values should occur more frequently then odd values. Do you agree
with this statement? Prove your answer by listing down all possible sums when rolling two dice and counting the
odd and even numbers that appear.
6. If a letter is chosen at random from the English alphabet, find the probability that the letter
i.
is a vowel.
ii.
precedes the letter j.
iii.
follows the letter g.
7. The probability that an American industry will locate in Munich is 0.7, the probability that it will locate in Brussels is
0.4 and the probability that it will locate in either Munich or Brussels or both is 0.8. What is the probability that the
industry will locate
i.
In both cities?
ii.
In neither city?
8. In a poker hand consisting of 5 cards, what is the probability of holding
i.
3 aces?
ii.
4 hearts and 1 club?
iii.
A royal flush? (A, K, Q, J, and 10, all of the same suit)
9. A sample of 200 students from three colleges were asked if they favored the four days per week schedule over
the original five days per week. The results are shown below:
Favored
Not In Favor
Total

COS
30
20
50

CLA
15
85
100

CED

Suppose a student is selected at random from this sample. What is the probability that we select a
i.
student from the COS?
ii.
student who is not from the COS?
iii.
student who is in favor of the four days per week schedule?
iv.
student from the CLA who does not favor the four days per week schedule?
v.
student from the CED given that the one chosen favors the four days per week schedule?
10. Mark finds two games in the casino and has trouble deciding which game to play. The following games were his
options:
i.
A coin tossing game where he would win $200 if he gets at least two heads when tossing three coins
and lose $100 otherwise.
ii.
A dice tossing game where he would win $300 if he rolls a double when tossing two dice and lose $50
otherwise.
Construct a probability distribution for each game and compute the expected value. Which game do you think he
should play? Justify.
11. Suppose that in a game of tossing two coins, you win PhP100.00 when two tails come out and you lose Php50.00
otherwise. What is your expected gain?
12. Suppose that in a game, you win PhP50.00 when you draw a face card and you lose PhP30.00 otherwise. What
is your expected gain?
