Endless Adventure Awaits

in the Islands of Hawai‘i
Maybe it’s the 30-foot waves that pound the North-facing shores of all the Hawaiian Islands each
winter. Or, it could be the incredibly diverse ecosystem found in such a relatively small amount of area.
In fact, there might be a dozen or so reasons as to why Hawai‘i is the destination of choice for
those looking to tip the adrenaline. Yet one thing is certain: whether your idea of a ‘thrill’ is flying in
a glider plane, tackling the art of kite surfing or staring down a plate of Hawaiian regional cuisine,
there’s something for everyone in Hawai‘i. All you need to do is pick an island (or six!), apply sunscreen,
and hold on for the ride.
O‘ahu
With Honolulu’s hip (and easily navigable) downtown area, the beach
and shopping mecca that is Waikiki, the legendary surf capital of the
world on the North Shore and the secluded coastline of the West
Side, O‘ahu is a true slice of paradise with an urban edge. Even though
the majority of visitors to this centrally located island stay in Waikiki,
there is boundless adventure to be had within steps from gilded shops
along Kalakaua Avenue. A favourite morning activity for thrill-seekers
is to hike up Diamond Head Crater. The natural sanctuary inside the
crater leads to narrow caves that wind up nearly 1,000 feet, revealing
unparalleled views. Just below the lookout is a local’s favourite surf
break: here, many are learning the re-invigorated sport of stand-up
paddle boarding, brought back to the mainstream by big wave surfers
like Laird Hamilton and Brian Keaulana.
Those seeking a slightly more sedated thrill can drive the south
eastern shoreline and stop at Makapu‘u Lighthouse, where, from
November through April, hikers can see breaching humpback whales
just off the dramatic shoreline. Continue around the island to the
sleepy suburban town of Kailua, where any number of outfitters rent
kayaks, windsurfing and snorkel gear. Paddle to an off-shore island that
doubles as both a protected bird sanctuary and the ideal spot to swim
with honu (green sea turtles).

Watch professional surfers from all over the world tackle gigantic
waves, and then head over to Mokule‘ia for a ride on a glider plane,
or a sky dive experience.
Whichever you prefer, Honolulu draws foodies from around the
world who crave the unique fare of Hawai‘i. A meal at any number
of globally recognized restaurants is one adventure you won’t
soon forget.

metropolis is home to over ten million people, who have astounding
success in combining the ancient and modern world in their daily lives.
During the day, you might want to visit any one of the 400 Buddhist
temples that glitter in the Bangkok sun. The Grand Palace and Wat
Phra Kaeo especially are a treasure trove of Thai art with their gold-
plated Reclining Buddha, and the Emerald Buddha, the most revered
Buddha in Thailand. Later on, receive a traditional Thai Massage at
Wat Pho, learn to meditate at one of the city’s meditation centres,
or take a river cruise. For an urban adrenaline rush: try shopping!
Floating markets on the Chao Phraya river, the mazes of the famous
Chatuchak weekend market, and the most modern shopping centres
will delight any shopper. When the sun sets, Bangkok’s night markets

Just 86 kilometres north of Bangkok is Ayutthaya, one of Thailand’s

Heritage Site, the Ayutthaya city complex’s ancient architecture is a

Relaxed and Adventurous
After the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, travellers can retreat to over
2500 kilometres of beautiful beaches in Thailand’s South, a region
extending down from Bangkok to the Malaysian border. The region is
situated between the Andaman Sea on the west and the South China
Sea on the east. Both coastlines offer white sandy beaches, offshore
islands and many national parks.
Islands on the east side, such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao,
have long been popular holiday spots for the laid-back traveller,
with their many small beach bungalows, informal atmosphere and
seaside restaurants.
Phuket, on the west, is a sophisticated resort destination whose
hospitality has never failed to impress. Spend your days in one

Even further south along the coast is a Thailand not often advertised,

Over 400 Flight Centre employees descended on Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa,
Providenciales to hold their National Leadership Conference.
For the first time ever, the conference included
community based volunteer activities that had
them completing 10 projects in conjunction
with the Sandals Foundation that had a direct
positive impact on the people and destination
of Turks & Caicos. It was the largest
community outreach program of its kind ever
held on the island.
The list of projects included the re-building
of vegetable and reading gardens to planting
mangroves and building playgrounds for local
children. Flight Centre asked each of its shops
and businesses sending representatives to
the leadership conference in September to
raise money to cover the cost of materials,
tools and transportation in order to make
the projects happen. To make the donation
even more significant, the company matched
its staff’s fundraising efforts dollar for dollar

you can imagine: knick knacks, souvenirs, clothing, and brand name
hand bags. Also, a little bargaining is always welcomed at the booths
without sticker prices on their items. My shopping experience was a
success and I managed to pick up for myself two hand bags,
an eel skin wallet, stainless steel chop stick and, of course,
souvenir Kimchi.

So if you are looking for a dining and shopping holiday that is ‘off the
beaten path’, I strongly encourage you to try Seoul Korea. If even
you find yourself in Incheon airport for a 9-hour layover en route to
another destination, go out to eat or shop till you drop!

Seeing the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand was something I
had always wanted to do. But, making it a reality seemed to be so far
out of my reach given the distance and the means needed to get me
there. When I finally had the opportunity to see it all on a cruise ship,
you can imagine how excited I was, it was a dream
come true. The ship started in Alaska and made its
way across to New Zealand and Australia. Along Sharing our
