NATIONAL QUIZ CONTEST


MECHANICS
A. Team Delegation
1. Each participating school/university/college may send one team to compete in
the contest.
2. A team member should have the following qualifications:
a. A bona fide mechanical engineering student with at least one year school
Residency
b. A registered participant of the 2012 PSME National Student Conference.
3. Each team shall have a minimum number of members of three (3) and a
maximum number of members of five (5),that is, three (3) regular members
and two (2) alternate members. A participating school/university/college with
less than three (3) members present at the beginning of the contest shall be
automatically disqualified.
4. Only three (3) members will be allowed to participate at a time. Substitution
could be made after ten (10) questions in the elimination round and after the
8th question in the final round.

B. QUIZ PROPER

1. The names of the contestants should be submitted to the Chairman of the Quiz
Committee before the start of the contest.
2. Only ball pens, pencils and scientific calculators are allowed during the
contest. Absolutely cellular phones and the like will not be allowed.
3. A student assistant shall be assigned to each team to provide the scratch paper
and answer sheet and to collect the same after the time limit of the
problem/question has expired.
4. The contest shall be subdivided into two (2) rounds, namely, Elimination
Round and Final Round. The elimination round and final round shall consist
of thirty (30) questions and fifteen (15) questions, respectively.

5. The contest shall cover the following subjects/topics: Algebra, Trigonometry,


Solid Mensuration, Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Advance
Engineering Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Static and Dynamic of
Rigid Bodies, Mechanical of Deformable Bodies, Thermodynamics 1,
Thermodynamics 2, Machine Elements (Kinematics), Materials Engineering,
Workshop and Machine Shop Practice, Fluid Mechanics, Engineering
Economy, Refrigeration Systems, Machine Design, Air Conditioning
Engineering and Fluid Machineries.
6. The Quiz Master shall read each question twice, specifying the type of the
problem, the time limit, and the equivalent points. The time will officially
start after the Quiz Master has read the question for the second time.
7. The Quiz Master shall read the correct answer to question or problem only
after all the student assistants shall have forwarded all the answer sheets to the
Board of Judges.
8. The Quiz Master shall read only those schools/universities/colleges that
obtained the correct answer as determined by the Board of Judges.
9. Complete answers should be given. Proper units must be supplied whenever
applicable. Full names are required for name of persons; a full name being
regarded as correct or common first name with corresponding surname.
Wrong spelling is considered incorrect. For multiple-choice type of questions,
the letter or the answer itself or both may be given.
10. Clarifications on answers should be made before the next question is read.
Participants or their coach may rise for any objections. Only the resource
person for the particular field of questions subject to clarification, or the
organizer has the right to participate in the deliberation. The decision made is
final and binding.
11. After the elimination round, only the ten (10) participating teams with the
highest accumulated points shall advance to the final round.
SUDDEN DEATH ROUND:
In case of a tie at the end of elimination round, questions shall be asked
until the required number of participants for the succeeding round is met. The
team who answers a question correctly shall automatically be given a slot for
the next round.
12. Scores shall be reset to zero at the start of the final round.

13. The top 3 participants/teams with the highest earned points at the end of the
finals shall be declared winners. The Sudden Death Rule shall be applied in
case of a tie.
14. All contestants shall receive a certificate of participation. Winners will receive
medals. A trophy will also be awarded to the champion team.
15. Coaching from the audience is strictly prohibited. The event organizer
reserves the right to eject any unruly member of the crowd.

C. AWARDS/PRIZES
Every team will receive a certificate of participation and winning teams
will be awarded with cash prizes and certificates of recognition. all cash
prizes should be redeemed on the day of the contest else it will be forfeited
D. MECHANICS ON JOINING
1. To join the contest, fill out and submit the application/entry form
provided for this purpose not later than October 1, 2012 at the
PSME National Secretariat located at P. Paredes, Sampaloc, Manila
or fax it through Fax No. (02) 493-4268 and/ or send an electronic
copy at psmenatcon@yahoo.com or psme_quiz@yahoo.com
2. Confirmation to join the contest may also be sent to the Chairman
of the National Quiz Committee, Engr. Jose E. Francisco or to
the Chair of the 2012 PSME Student National Conference, Engr.
