projects

The team leader

The deal-maker

Winston Cheng
Project Manager, Keppel FELS

Melvin Ng Yong Hwee

Commercial Manager (Marketing/Conversion), Keppel Shipyard

Winston Cheng joined Keppel FELS in 2006 as a Trainee

Superintendent in the Operations Department. An eager
learner, he quickly rose to the rank of Project Superintendent,
and was entrusted to lead a team in the construction of
a semisubmersible drilling rig. Today, as a Project Manager,
Winston oversees a team to plan and organise specific yard
resources to ensure that his rig project is completed on time,
within budget and safely.

An NUS Mechanical Engineering graduate, Melvin Ng

began his career at Keppel Shipyard managing the conversion
of an FPSO. As part of the company's efforts to expose its
young talents, Melvin has been rotated to the Commercial
and Marketing Department where he tenders for new
contracts and supports the company in building strong
relations with its customers.

Why did you take up Keppels Management Traineeship Scheme?

I wanted to join a company with ample learning and career development
opportunities. As an industry leader, Keppel FELS would allow me to work
with the best on large-scale and interesting projects. Through the Scheme
and my work, I have met many mentors who are always ready to share their
values as well as extensive technical knowledge and international experience.
How have you benefited from your experience?
The shipyard environment is exciting and challenging; working here
has made me more resilient, both mentally and physically.
To ensure the successful completion of a project, I have to work closely
with many parties, including colleagues, subcontractors, clients and
surveyors. Over time, the job has honed my project management capabilities,
especially, my ability to lead and motivate a team and plan and execute
complex operations.
How do you see your future in Keppel?
Keppel believes in continuous learning; as such, there are many programmes
and opportunities for employees to grow their knowledge, abilities and
interests. Through these programmes and opportunities, and with guidance
from my seniors, I hope to have a broader and more in-depth understanding
of Keppel FELS projects and operations, so that I can contribute more
significantly to the company.

KEPPEL OFFSHORE & MARINE

Why did you take up Keppels Management Traineeship Scheme?

While on an industrial attachment programme at NUS, I realised that
I did not enjoy deskbound jobs. I readily chose Keppel to start my
career as it offers hands-on work on diverse projects, amidst an
invigorating environment.

Melvin Ng thrives on the vast opportunities

to learn and experience new things

How is it like working in Keppel?

Going to work at Keppel Shipyard is like coming back to a second home.
Everyone works in concert to turnaround projects large and small;
we are like members of one big family.
In addition, through Group-wide courses and events such as
Keppel Games, there are many opportunities to interact with Keppelites
from other business units. The sense of camaraderie that I share with
my colleagues from across the Group is something that I treasure.
How do you see your future in Keppel?
Being a multinational company, Keppel provides many opportunities
for the holistic growth of its people. I am gradually being exposed
to the wide range of Keppel Shipyards operations, and right now,
I have found my niche in the Commercial and Marketing Department
where I can add value to the company and its customers. That being said,
I am still learning new things everyday.

FACE-TO-FACE

The lead engineer

Joanne Lim
Commercial Manager, Keppel Singmarine
In the male-dominated offshore and marine sector, women
are fast making significant headway, rising to leadership
positions in their fields. Joanne Lim, who graduated with a
mechanical engineering degree from Singapores Nanyang
Technological University (NTU), is one such leading lady in
Singapores offshore and marine industry today.
Why did you take up Keppels Management Traineeship Scheme?
Joanne Lim explains that her supportive
colleagues who are diligent in taking up
challenges, solving problems and keeping up
with project schedules motivates her to come
to work every day

Keppel Offshore & Marine boasts an established track record and offers
unmatched exposure for anyone who aspires to start off in a highly
regarded and dynamic company. I wanted to learn at a company with
a strong reputation in the industry like Keppel Offshore & Marine.
Importantly, Keppel Offshore & Marine believes that people are its
core assets. The company provided ample learning and development
opportunities that catered to my interest and skill sets. As such, I believed
Keppel Offshore & Marine would offer me the platform to deliver and
establish a long-term career in the offshore and marine industry.
What motivates and drives you at work every day?
The important role and contribution of the offshore and marine industry
to Singapores economy and global standing inspired me to be a part of
the team. Apart from Keppel FELS which is a global leader in the design and
building of high performance mobile offshore rigs, Keppel Singmarine is also
a renowned specialised shipbuilder which has even built technologically
advanced ice-breakers. All these make me proud that I am a part of this
company and able to do my part to contribute to its ongoing success.
Additionally, my colleagues are supportive and diligent in taking up challenges,
solving problems and keeping up to our project schedules. Working towards
our common goal to deliver our masterpiece is a key motivator for the team.
How does it feel like to work in an industry largely dominated by men?
It is a challenge to lead and supervise a male-dominated team at times.
However, these challenges propel me to work harder and make my work
an interesting learning experience.
Keppel Offshore & Marine recognises and appreciates the importance of a
diverse workforce, supporting my development as a team player and leader.
Female participation in the industry is growing and I am glad to be able to
offer an alternative perspective as a female engineer.
