ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
History of all great works is to witness that
no great work was ever done without either
the active or passive support of a person's
surroundings and one's close quarters. Thus it
is not hard to conclude how active assistance
from seniors could positively impact the
execution of a project. I am highly thankful to
our learned Project Guide

INTRODUCTION
Every successive generation seems to have more and more
opportunities and options, but we as parents are not always aware of the
many varied careers that seem to be constantly mushrooming. As a
result, even though we would like to give our child the best advice, we
are unable to do so due to our own limited knowledge.
The concept of a 'career' has developed from being a
single, paid job to the new concept of a continuous
process of learning and development that includes all
your paid and unpaid work, learning and life roles
Career development is a unique exercise for each of
us because we are all individuals and therefore affected
by our individual circumstances, life experience and
needs during the different stages of our lives.
Put simply, career planning is a practical method of
deciding what to do with your life. Its a creative process
to help you picture your ideal type of work. Its about
determining what your interests, talents and skills are,
deciding whats most important to you, and choosing a
direction that will be compatible with what you love to do
most. Career planning helps you make effective decisions
when choosing a career or changing careers. Learning
how to career plan is a life-long skill you carry with you
as you move in and out of the labour market.

The present work is a humble attempt to guide students so that

they may be able to developo their career successfully.

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE
The primary goal of our project is to provide support to students for
their career planning.
Consequently the focus of my investigation is to find out the popularity
and availability of various career oppertunities after various standards.
Objectives:
The study was conducted with the following objectives:
1i) To estimate the popularity of various career opertunities.
1ii) To estimate the availability of various career opertunities.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
For this study, the survey was conducted in the entire city of
Bareilly & Pilibhit covering all the categories including students, of all
standards.
The sample was randomly selected from Bareilly and Pilibhit
districts and respondents were in the age group of 14 to 30+ years. The
responses of the respondents were recorded on a pre-coded structure
questionnaire by the part-time casual interviewers trained for this
purpose. The data in the coded form were collected from the
interviewers compiled and analysed While selecting the respondents due
care was taken to give proper representation to female respondents as
well as different age groups & occupational categories.

Research Design
As the problem is very well defend and clear, a conclusive
research design was used moreover the conclusion was to be drawn on
the basis of generalised result, so the descriptive design was selected for
the purpose of collecting analysing and interpreting the data obtained,
on some specific points.
A plan of what data to gather, from whom, how and when to
collect the data, and how to analyze the data obtained.
This is a systematic plan to coordinate archaeological research to
ensure the efficient use of resources and to guide the research according
to scientific methods.
Also known as a market research briefing, this is a basic plan
which guides the data collection and analysis phases of the research
project. It acts as a framework which details the type of information to
be collected, the data sources and the data collection procedure.
Thus Research design can be thought of as the structure of
research -- it is the "glue" that holds all of the elements in a research
project together.

Data Collection Method

In order to collect the data from the respondent of some specific
points, a nondisclosure, structured, questionnaire was developed.
Survey was exploratory in nature and based on this study various
question relating to different aspects were included in the dichotomous,
multiple choice and open- ended question as per the requirement of the
research work (the questionnaire is enclosed in the annexes). Secondary
data used in the research as and when available.
Data collection is a term used to describe a process of preparing
and collecting data - for example as part of a process improvement or
similar project.
Data collection usually takes place early on in an improvement
project, and is often formalised through a data collection Plan which
often contains the following activity.
1. Pre collection activity Agree goals, target data, definitions,
methods
2. Collection data collection
3. Present Findings usually involves some form of sorting analysis
and/or presentation.
A formal data collection process is necessary as it ensures that data
gathered is both defined and accurate and that subsequent decisions
based on arguments embodied in the findings are valid. The process
provides both a baseline from which to measure from and in certain
cases a target on what to improve.

Primary Data
Data collected specifically for a research project Collect when
secondary data are
Unavailable
Inappropriate
can be collected through a number of different methods sometimes more
than one method can apply to a single problem
Primary Data Sources
Primary data collection is necessary when a researcher cannot find the
data needed in secondary sources. Market researchers are interested in
primary

data

about

demographic/socioeconomic

attitudes/opinions/interests,

awareness/

characteristics,

knowledge,

intentions,

motivation, and behavior. Three basic means of obtaining primary data

are observation, surveys, and experiments. The choice will be
influenced by the nature of the problem and by the availability of time
and money.
Surveys
Surveys or questioning involve using a questionnaire (data collection
instrument) to ask respondents questions to secure the desired
information. Questionnaires may be administered by mail, over the
telephone, by computer, or in person. Limitations of surveys include

opportunities for error in construction and administering of a

questionnaire, expense, and time needed to conduct a survey.
Respondents may not respond, may be unable to respond, or may give
misleading responses.
Primary data collection methos is the best source of information
method. Always good for the survey.
Advantages :1. Basic data
2. Un biased information
3. Original data
4. Data from the primary market/ population
5. Data direct from the population.
Disadvantages :1. Large volume of data.
2. Huge volume of population.
3. Time consuming
4. Direct and personal intervention has to be there.
5. Raw data.

Secondary data
In research, Secondary data is collected and possibly processed by
people other than the researcher in question. Common sources of
secondary data for social science include censuses, large surveys, and
organizational records. In sociology primary data is data you have
collected yourself and secondary data is data you have gathered from
primary sources to create new research. In terms of historical research,
these two terms have different meanings. A primary source is a book or
set of archival records. A secondary source is a summary of a book or
set of records.
In order to use secondary data three steps must be completed:
1. locate the data
2. evaluate the data
3. verify the data
Locating the data can be easily done with the advancements of
searching sources online. However, people need to be aware of the
details when searching online since pages can be out of date or poorly
put together. Therefore, use caution and pay attention to whether it is a
reliable data source online and check when the last update was. To
evaluate the data a researcher must carefully examine the secondary
data they are considering to ensure that it meets their needs and purpose
of study. The person must look at the population and what the sample

strategy and type were. It is also important to look at when the data was
collected, how it was collected, how it was coded and edited, along with
the operational definitions of measures that were used. Finally, the data
must be verified to ensure good quality material to be used in new
research.

Secondary Data Featrures Advantages

Using secondary data can allow for the analyses of social processes in
what would otherwise be inaccessible settings. It also saves time and
money since the work has already been done to collect the data. That
lets the researcher avoid problems with the data collection process.
Using someone else's data can also facilitate a comparison with other
data samples and allow multiple sets of data to be combined. There is
also the chance that other variables could be included, resulting in a
more diverse sample than would have been feasible before.
Disadvantages
There are several things to take into consideration when using
preexisting data. Secondary data does not permit the progression from
formulating a research question to designing methods to answer that
question. It is also not feasible for a secondary data analyst to engage in
the habitual process of making observations and developing concepts.
These limitations hinder the ability of the researcher to focus on the
original research question. Data quality is always a concern because it's
source may not be trusted.

Secondary Data
Below is the valuable data and facts/figure regarding career counseling.
The data was collected from various web sites and I hope would be of
prime interest for students looking to shape their career.
When a child completes his tenth standard, it is often time for him to
choose certain streams for which he has an aptitude towards, or which
he is interested in.
Decisions
However, when you think about it, if the choice is left up entirely to
your child, he will most certainly be unaware of all that is out there, and
as a result may not make the right decision. For example, your child
may wonder if he should do arts, but then may feel that he has got such
a high percentage in his boards, that he can gain admission in science.
So why should he do arts? In addition, after science he can do medicine,
engineering, architecture etc. What can he do after arts? And so
thinking, he makes a decision. Whether or not this was the right
decision, only time can tell. But one thing is for sure - he didn't base his
decision on the right parameters.
Your child's career is something that will stay with him through his life.
Although numerous people do change their careers, it would be best if

your child is able to identify what interests him at the outset, so he

doesn't need to change careers or jobs very often.
The only way your child will be able to identify what he wants to do, is
if he knows what opportunities are available out there.
Many children make the mistake of letting their marks decide what
stream they should take up. What they should do instead is first identify,
broadly, what they want to do, and then they should find out what they
need to study in order to get their dream job. If they do this the other
way around, that means that they are being dictated by their
circumstances, instead of the other way around.
General Idea
Your child may not know exactly what he wants to do, but he may have
a general idea. For example, your child may want to work for Microsoft
just because he likes the thought of doing so, but he doesn't know that
he need to be a programmer to do so. He can even be an MBA, a
graphic designer, a researcher, or be in the human resources, public
relations or legal departments and so on. So, if he is keen on a particular
organization but not really on a particular stream of work, then identify
what are the various departments available, and then let your child see
for himself how broad the choices are.

Information
It always helps to see a career counselor, just so your child knows what
the choices are. Alternatively, you could speak to various friends and
relatives to get an idea of the options available, and then discuss them
with your child, or let your child speak with them as well.
One of the best ways to lay out the options for your child, would be to
start at the level of the streams available, like science, and narrow it
down and outline options, with names of Companies your child can
work for. So if your child does biology, he can go in for medicine after
the 12th, or law, and perhaps specialize in medical law, or
biotechnology The options are endless, and letting your child be
aware of the options available at the outset will help him make the
choice, instead of the other way around, where he chooses from what he
knows, and then suddenly finds that there are so many other things he
could have done - if only he knew.
For 10th class students: after completion of your board exams every
students have to choose their stream whether among these: arts,
commerce and science apart it many private central board of secondary
education CBSE affiliated schools has now started new courses for the
students just after 10th class. These courses include computer science,
electronic science and many other specific technical courses. So if one

wants to build his or her career right from you board examination, now
you have the better options.
For 12th class students: now after completion of your 12th class
exams, it is a time for bachelor degree courses. Various university offer
various bachelor degree programs like B.A, B.Com, B.SC, BCA,
B.Tech, BBA, and various other hon. Courses also in specific stream
like English, political science etc.
If you are doing just a bachelor degree from any university then also
dont forget to have the knowledge of basic computer course as it has
now become the requirement of each organization and company. Every
student wants to get good marks and take admission in a regular college
but it is not possible in every student cases. So there are other options
available for the students like correspondence courses by the various
universities.
The courses structure of regular college course and correspondence
course is almost same. So dont worry about the course. Many students
deliberately choose correspondence course as they also want to do some
other technical course simultaneously. It seems a very good idea which
is not possible in regular course. So dont get depress if you are fails to
get the admission in a regular college. Judge and ask yourself what you
want to do, take the guidance from the seniors and choose the right way
for your career.
.

A Career
(i) I know what I want to do
If you know what you want to do, then it is sensible to explore ways of
entering that career or checking that it really is the right thing for you
before you enter your final year. Go along to the Advisory and
Counselling Centre in Marsh Building to talk to one of the Careers
Team.
(ii) I want a career but I don't know what
If you are in this position then again it is important that you do as much
as you can to gain direction before you enter the final year. Talk to one
of the Careers Advisers to find out how to go about this. You might be
advised to have a guidance interview with a Careers Adviser, or use one
of the best careers guidance programmes available on the internet- and
its free. Prospects Planner helps you clarify your ideas. You answer
some questions about your skills and what you want from a job and
Prospects Planner suggests what might suit you. You don't have to
explore all the suggestions in one go. Your responses are saved between
visits and you can return to Prospects Planner as many times as you like.
The Careers Adviser might use a Psychometric Test to work out your
personal strengths and areas that you would be best to investigate.

Self-assessment
It is important that you dont just start applying frantically for the first
graduate jobs you see. Take a step back and begin by evaluating
yourself and your skills are you ready and sufficiently equipped to
enter the job market? What do you have to offer future employers? And
ultimately, what kind of graduate job will send you home satisfied?
Things to consider about yourself

What are you good at?

What kind of work environment do you enjoy?
How do you interact with others?
What industries interest you?
What are your priorities (work, life, money)?
Have you done your research into various graduate jobs?
What are your personal circumstances and values?
Are you making your own choices or just taking the advice of
other people?
Review your career skills
Evaluate your skills and experiences consider your nonacademic achievements and talents, eg computer skills and
languages, and put together a skills portfolio.
Decide what you need analyse what skills a potential employer
is looking for (study graduate-job advertisements, etc), and
identify which of these skills you may be lacking.

Prepare examples you need to make sure you can demonstrate

your career skills. Draw up a list of solid examples of your
experiences.
Gain experience take opportunities to increase your skills with
extra courses, more extracurricular activities or work placements.

SAMPLING SCHEME AND SAMPLE SIZE

Sample size
The sample size of a statistical sample is the number of observations
that constitute it. It is typically denoted n, a positive integer (natural
number).
Typically, different sample sizes lead to different precision of
measurement. This can be seen in such statistical rules as the law of
large numbers and the central limit theorem. All else being equal, a
larger sample size n leads to increased precision in estimates of various
properties of the population.
The procedure used for sampling was "convenience & judgement
sampling" Although the sample chosen by this method has a main draw
back of the members not being true representative of the universe, yet
for a research to be a completed in such a short time limit, it solves the
purpose. The sample size taken for the purpose a research was 200.

LIMITATIONS
The sample choose on the basis of convenience & judgement
sampling might not have been the true representative of the universe.
Though every care has been taken to make it most representative.
The respondents might not have disclosed their income exactly due
to multiple of reasons and it might have led to an inexact
interpretation.
Some respondent (Specially low educated) had not filled the
questionnaire themselves which may cause a deviation in the
results .
The possibility of biasing factor and impact of opinion leader could
not be eliminated as the respondents were human being.
Due to lack of awareness, sometimes people guess to respond to
some particular question, this could also lead to errata.

FIELD WORK
The respondents were given questionnaire either by contacting
personally or by making calls at homes so as to cover all classes of
respondent.

TABULATION / CHARTING OF DATA

The data so collected was tabulated as per requirement and then

Aa Ha!! The Million Dollar Question!!

Although the respondents seem to be
terribly divided on this very very vital

question, however with 24% voting,

Aviation(Pilot etc.) emerges as the winner
though not a clear one. This is a very tricky
question, as everybody has his own choice.

SALIENT FINDINGS
1

Sample was very carefully choosen.

Majority of the candidates belong to Middle and upper middle

class.

Parents play a vital role in carerr choice of their children.

Though useful, it sometimes implies unnecessary interference.

Displaying the phenomena of Social Hypnotism, Peer Pressure

works its way i.e. childrens often go for the same careerr as of
their mates.

Money, Luxury and majestic life style associated with foreign

countries like USA seem to be fascinating everybody.

People are not well aware that our country has made a good
progress in field of education and it has managed to emerge as an
educational hub.

Convent schools pulls the people like magnets.

Family background play a leading role on a child's deucation,

while financial backbone is also as an impacting factor.

People are realizing the impact of technology on the education.

When hunting for a job, people rank money at the first place
while job satisfaction and prestige were also important to them.

People insist that expertise in English language is of paramount

importance, where proficiency in foreign languages and computer
knowledge are also conclusive.

Everybody seem to be well aware about the poor position of

primary education in our country. Still some people think that now
the scenerio is changing.

For higher education, the majority is fully dependent on the

educational loan.

About 75% people beleive that getting an educational is to

chew iron pellets.

Majority insist that Open universities are no match to regular

universities

Maximum people think that Politics is responsible for non

performing of some universities.

Internet is ruling the roost here too when people think about
searching a job. While Placement agencies is also a great resource.

People has strongly protested hike in educational fees.

Aviation(Pilot etc.) emerges as most popular career choice while

administrative services, engg., medical were also among favorite
career choice.

Suggestions

Parents should not too much interfere with children's career

plans and allow them to do justice with their natural talent.

Children should be developed in an environment where they

may be able to take independent decision avoiding any kind of
Peer Pressure.

Suffiecient inititaive should be taken by government to project

the image of our country as an educational hub.

More and More Hindi Medium schools should be developed

with quality education.

Parents should compel their children to have command over

English language and make them updated with computer and other
technological trends.

As the majority is fully dependent on the educational loan the

educational loan process should be made easy and flexible.

Government should try to raise the standard of Open universities

so that they may come closer to regular universities.

Childrens must be trained to utilise the resources like Internet

and Placement agencies so that it may facilitate them for job
search.

Conclusion :Study of the above survey and analysis of the secondary data has
compelled me to go for the following conclusion :Parents play a vital role in carerr choice of their children. it
sometimes shows implies unnecessary interference. I have realized that
childrens often go for the same careerr as of their mates. People
generally associate Money, Luxury and majestic life style with foreign
countries.
People are yet to realize that our country is emerging as an
educational hub.High quality education linked with Convent schools
naturally attract the people. It is also easy to see that Family background
play a leading role on a child's deucation. Impact of technology on the
education is quite visible.
Job satisfaction is not as important as money when people look for
a job.People think that command over English is most important, where
proficiency in foreign languages and computer knowledge are also
decisive. Primary education in our country is yet to pass through an age
of revolution. This is also noteworthy that for higher education, the
majority is fully dependent on the educational loan. Thereby it is very
unfortunate to see that getting an educational is realised as extremely
difficult task. Open universities are not prestigious in public. While
people think that Politics is responsible for non performing of some
universities.
Internet has emerged as a very good source for job search
,Placement agencies are also no less popular for this purpose. People
hasare naturally against any hike in educational fees.
As for as the most favorite career choice is concerned ,Aviation is the
leader while administrative services, engg., medical were also among
popular career choices.

Here are some ideas of where to look for Vacancies:

You know what you want to do. You know where you want to work.
Now, how do you go about finding yourself the graduate job you want?
Starting a graduate job search can be difficult. You must organise your
time properly and apply at the right time of year so be sure you dont
miss out on any vacancies.
Careers fairs
Graduate careers fairs, which are usually held in autumn or summer,
give you the chance to talk to graduate employers, find out what they
have to offer and network.
Company Presentations
Large graduate employers often visit universities and give presentations
to explain their working environment and recruitment process. Check
with your careers service for details of which companies are presenting
and when.
Newspapers and magazines
Many national papers have daily job supplements covering specific
industries, such as Career & Ascent for Hindustan Times & Times of
India. You may also be able to search for graduate positions on the
newspapers websites.

Dont forget about regional papers these often advertise graduate

vacancies with smaller employers.
If you are targeting a particular industry, its a good idea to read trade
press such as New Scientist and Marketing Week.
Professional bodies
Telephone to ask whether they have any material they can send you, or
browse their websites for helpful tips and jobs in their field.
Speculative applications
A surprisingly high number of graduates find work this way. Send a
targeted CV and covering letter to a few chosen companies. This is the
best way to find vacancies that havent been advertised. You can find
potential employers by
Speculative applications are a particularly effective way of finding work
experience which may in turn lead to a permanent graduate job.
Contacts
Call any contacts you might have made on a work-experience
placement. Ask them if they know of any internal vacancies that might
be of interest to you.
Recruitment agencies
Signing on with a recruitment agency that specialises in, for example,
IT, finance or publishing jobs is yet another useful avenue to investigate.
Specialist agencies are more likely to find you work which is relevant to
the graduate career you want to pursue.
