EG50HI/1M simulation assignment

L. Akanji

Objectives
The purpose of this exercise is to demonstrate the capability of surfactant to emulsify
oil and water into an emulsion (a new phase), thereby causing desaturation and
potentially enhancing recovery. The objectives of this exercise are therefore:
1) to simulate recovery by surfactant injection using REVEAL software package.
2) to evaluate the effectiveness of the technique.
3) to study the impact of reservoir water salinity (groups C1, C3) or polymer
shear rate (groups C2, C4).

Your tasks
The model you will be working on is a simple reservoir model with one producer and
one injector (both horizontal) wells. These two wells are complemented by two
additional vertical injectors.
The following step by step procedure can be used in order to setup such a model:

1) Launch the REVEAL software package under Petroleum Experts folder

2) Create a new model by clicking on New icon
3) Go to Options tab > Units and change the units if desired.
4) Download the project file surfactant.rvl from MyAberdeen > Continuous
Assessment and paste it into your local (H:) directory.
5) Quality check (QC) the data on the script that appears in the Navigation
window (you can also use the script wizard on the input menu).
6) Click on Start/Resume under the Run Simulation tab. A pop up window
may appear flagging This will permanently delete unsaved results. Are you
sure? Click Yes. Click Yes on save changes to surfactant.rvl.
7) The simulation run will commence after a few seconds and may last for 5 to
10 minutes. Be patient and keep an eye on the mean oil pressure output on
the screen.
8) At the end of the simulation run, click on Reservoir 3D Graphics under the
Results tab or simply click on 3D view icon to visualise the model. Include
the 3D model in your report showing a reflection on the following outputs
a. Oil pressure distribution
b. Drainage injection region
c. Porosity distribution
9) Select Average Reservoir Results under the Results tab and plot different
variable outputs:
a. Mass of surfactant injected versus time

b. Oil pressure versus time

c. Oil recovery versus time
d. Oil saturation versus time
10) Click on Average on Well Results under the Results tab and plot different
variable outputs:
a. PI (oil and gas separately) versus time
b. cumulative oil produced versus time
c. mass of surfactant injected versus time
d. oil produced versus time
11) If you are in group C1 or C3: repeat steps 5 to 10 for reservoir water salinity
of (i) 125000ppm (representative of, e.g., North Sea) and (ii) 250000ppm
(representative of, e.g., Stuttgart formation, Germany). The default value that
you just ran was 10000 ppm.
If you are in group C2 or C4: repeat steps 5 to 10 for a polymer shear rate of
(i) 10-3 s-1 and (ii) 10-5 s-1. The default value that you just ran was 10-4 s-1.
(These changes are made by going to the Input tab.)
12) Compare between steps 9 and 10 and the impact of the reservoir water
salinity or the polymer shear rate. Present your results and analysis in a
report. Typically the report will contain:
a.
b.
c.
d.
