Basic Concepts in Machine Drawing

1. What type of thread is used for the screw jack and lathe lead screw and why ?
Square thread is an ideal thread form for power transmission. In this, as the thread ank is at right angle
to the axis, the normal force between the threads, acts parallel to the axis, with zero radial component.
This enables the nut to transmit very high pressures, as in the case of a screw jack and other similar
applications.

2. Write the use of Screw Jack ?

Screw jacks are used for raising heavy loads through very small heights

3. What is the size of A1 Size paper ?

210 x 297 mm

4. Draw the details of Title Block ?

5. Draw the Drawing Sheet Layout ?

6. Draw the symbol of rst angle projections?

For reference see the picture below

7. Dene scaling in machine drawing ?

Scale is the ratio of the linear dimension of an element of an object as represented in the drawing, to the
real linear dimension of the same element of the object itself.
Designation

4
SCALE 1 : 1 for full size,
SCALE : 1 for enlarged scales,
SCALE 1 : for reduced scales.
The designation of the scale used on the drawing should be shown in the title block.
8. List the types of line ?
Lines of dierent types and thicknesses are used for graphical representation of objects

For refence: the application of these line types are given in a machine drawing

9. How to designated cutting plane ?

More Reference : Conventions for Sectioning

The objective of sectioning is to show the inner details of a machine component.

A cutting plane cuts the object and the section is viewed after the removal of cut portion.
Cutting planes are designated by capital letters and the direction of viewing is indicated by arrow

marks.
The cutting plane(s) should be indicated by means of type H line

6
In principle, ribs, fasteners, shafts, spokes of wheels and the like are not cut in longitudinal sections

and therefore should not be hatched.

(f)

Half - Section

Symmetrical parts may be drawn, half in plain view and half in section.

(g)

Local Section

A local section may be drawn if half or full section is not convenient. The local break may be shown
by a continuous thin free hand line.

(h)

Successive Sections

Successive sections may be placed separately, with designations for both cutting planes and sections

10. List few machine element which should not be hatched ?

In principle, ribs, fasteners, shafts, spokes of wheels and the like are not cut in longitudinal sections and
therefore should not be hatched.

11. Draw the convention for metals and wood ?

12. Write the applications of universal coupling ?

The Universal coumpling can be used to transmit power over an inclined shaft. Examples, axisls of trucks,
heavy vehicles etc.
