Assignment 1

Due Time: Tuesday Feb. 12th

Instructions:

There are 5 questions to be answered. Questions 1 and 2 are related to optimal receiver
design. Questions 3 and 4 are related to the Inter-Symbol Interference cancelation.
Question 5 is related to both topics together.
This is an individual assignment. In solving this assignment, you may discuss with other
students, however you should submit your own solution.
Assignment should be either dropped in the mailbox of the instructor or to be handed to
the instructor (no email is acceptable).
This assignment is worth 25% of the grade of the assignments.
You must write the following statement on the title page of your assignment: I certify
that this submission is my original work and meets the Faculty's Expectations of
Originality, with your signature, I.D. #, and the date.

Question 1:

W/Hz. These
Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel with a single-sided power spectral density of
zeros and ones are generated randomly and with equal probability. In the transmitter, zeros and
ones are mapped to the signals

Question 2:
A stream of zeros and ones with bit rate
1/ is to be transmitted over an Additive White
Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel with a single-sided power spectral density of
W/Hz. These
zeros and ones are generated randomly and with equal probability. In the transmitter, this data is
grouped 2-bit by 2-bit and each 2-bit group makes a symbol. Then each symbol is mapped to one
of four signals as shown in Figure 3 where
2 .

Figure 3. Pulse shapes for the transmitted symbols

1. Draw the structure of the transmitter and the optimum receiver. Show clearly the impulse
response of the matched filter.
2. For =0, 1, 2, and 3, assume that
has been transmitted. Find the probability that the
receiver makes an error. Then obtain the average symbol error rate (SER) in terms of the
parameters A, , and .
3. Find the average symbol energy , and then write the SER in terms of / .
4. Find the best bit-to-symbol mapping in the transmitter for achieving lowest probability of
bit error (Use Gray Coding). Then obtain the average bit error rate in terms of / .
5. Draw the bit error rate of this system versus
/
(in dBs) and compare it with the
traditional binary antipodal system.

Question 3:
Consider a binary antipodal communication system with bit period of Tb. The transmitter
consists of a mapper which maps binary digits into positive and negative impulses. These
impulses pass through a pulse shaping filter and then transmitted. In the receiver, the signal plus
the white Gaussian noise is passed through a filter which is matched to the transmitted signal and
then the output of the matched filter is sampled every Tb. After sampling, the decision is done
based on maximum likelihood criteria. Assume that the transfer function of the overall system
(the pulse shaping filter, the channel, and the matched filter) is given by H(f) which is shown in
Figure 4.

Figure 4. The overall transfer function for the system

1) Find the relation between parameter a and bit period Tb such that there is no intersymbol interference (ISI).
2) In case of no ISI, what are the transfer functions of pulse shaping filter and matched
filter?
Question 4:
Consider a binary communication system with data rate of Rb=1/Tb. The transmitter consists of a
mapper which maps binary digits into positive and negative impulses. These impulses pass
through a pulse shaping filter with an impulse response of
given by (1.4) and then
transmitted. In the receiver, the signal plus the white Gaussian noise is passed through a filter
which is matched to
. Then the output of the matched filter is sampled every Tb. After
sampling, the decision is done based on maximum likelihood criteria.

2) What should be the value of Rb to have no ISI? Are there any other values for Rb to have
no ISI? Justify your answer.

Question 5:
Data at a rate of 2 Mbps is to be transmitted via a pass-band communication system whose
carrier frequency is 500MHz. A binary antipodal system with roll-off factor of 0.2 is used for
this communication. The AWGN single-sided power spectral density at the receiver is found to
be N0=10-12 W/Hz.
1) Evaluate the required received power that achieves a bit error probability of 10-6.
2) If the data rate is doubled:
a) What will be the new bandwidth for the system? Should we change the
implementation of the pulse shaping filter? Justify.
b) What will be the new bit error rate considering the same received power?
c) By what amount should the power increase to maintain the same bit error rate?
