INTRODUCTION
This topic is a discussion of the role of English in business communication.
Communication in business organizations has certain characteristics and its value in
the total business volume can be estimated.
Hartley and Clive conclude that the role of communication, over a period of time, has
become even more crucial to the success of a modern business organization.
Information flow is very rapid and strategic in the corporate organizations. From
online shopping to international inter-organizational communication, there is a wide
range of communication forms and formats. Moreover, quick action is the hallmark
of business organizations to satisfy the customers and to retain place in the market
world.

The
effectiveness of the line of communication will have an even more beneficial impact
on the business of an organization than it is usually considered to be. This factor is
usually underestimated and some times not accounted for.

Advertising is the most common and the most relied technique in marketing. Both in
electronic and print media, advertising convey the message to a great number of
people in the world. Advertising greatly varies in forms and objectives. Organizations

communication value and productivity are two numerical quantities and a relationship
can be established between them.
MISCOMMUNICATION
Miscommunication is not only the antonym of effective communication but it is the
perception of the receiver different than what was intended by the sender. This
difference in perception can be of varying degrees. It is even more than the failure of
the communication process. According to Bell, miscommunication as a concept, has
been poorly defined even by the authors who focused on miscommunication.

Written business communication has special significance for its formalness and
longevity. Marketing is a strategic par of frontal communication. Marketing, whether
introductory or persuasive, can have a number of patterns and strategies. Despite the
use of local languages, English is vastly employed in written communication in
marketing programs. When both verbal and written mediums are used, English is
more frequently employed in written medium.
Local languages are widely used in oral communication. In various written frontal

language. Here choice of language is a par of image building of the product as well as
of an organization. Frontal communication in English is considered to assure the
audience about two facts: being world class and higher quality. It is the international
standard that is linked with English as medium of frontal communication.
Haque points out significance of English linguistic culture of Pakistan as being the
language of the constitution and the law. Thus, English is medium of state rules and
regulations, judgments and proceedings, policy documents, economy and technology,
as well as education and information.

Linguistic resource, inter alia, comprises choice of words, sentences, and tone. Nonlinguistic part is the form given to linguistic materials concerned with the forms and
formats of the messages. It also includes other elements of written and spoken
communication. Therefore, language is a fundamental part of communication and it
codifies the contents of the message. However, a non-linguistic feature contributes
for the effectiveness of the linguistic resource.
The linguistic component codifies the message into words and it can be of infinite
patterns but the non-linguistic component has quite limited patterns.

BARRIERS
The factor or reason due to which problem may occur in communication is known as barrier
to communication.
These barriers include:
Convention of meaning.
System design.
Vertical decision.
Attitudinal barrier.
Difference in perception of reality.
Language.
Whom to listen.
Collection of data.
CONVENTION OF MEANING
It means that sometimes there are different meanings for the same word which may mislead
the reader from the real meaning. Miscommunication may occur due to the denotations.
DENOTATIONS
Indicating the name, object or event without any positive or negative impression. Such as,
walk, Ali, gun etc

SYSTEM DESIGN
It refers to problems with the structure or systems in an organization which is unclear and
therefore makes it confusing to know who to communicate with.
VERTICAL DECISION
Mostly organization in Pakistan follows the vertical decision system, so the lower staff which
is directly in touch with customer and market is not to be considered in decision making,
which sometimes create misunderstanding between the organization and the customer.
ATTITUDINAL BARRIER
It depends upon the behavior of any person specially on the behavior of executive staff. In
Pakistan the Govt. sector suffers from this barrier, the subordinates work performance is
directly related to his supervisor, if they do not work properly the subordinates also dont feel
their responsibility.
LANGUAGE
As Pakistan is a multilingual country and literacy rate is very low, especially in Govt. sector
the subordinates and team leaders also use, Urdu, Punjabi or any other cultural language
which is a big hurdle to communicate properly.

WHOM TO LISTEN
The manager in the same time has to handle both his supervisor and subordinates, sometime
he gets annoyed to whom he should listen.
COLLECTION OF DATA
Data collected by organization in Pakistan from market and from the layman is in different
languages, so the chances of miscommunication may occur when the data is to be converted
in English as most of the Pakistanis dont have good command on English language.
