he orisas are the emissaries of Eledumare.

They rule over

the forces of nature and the endeavours of humanity.
They recognise themselves and are recognised through their
different colours which are their marks, and each has their
own favorite foods and other things which they like to
receive as offerings and gifts. In this way we make our
offerings in the manner they are accustomed to, in the way
they have always received them, so that they will recognise
our offerings and come to our aid.
The orisas are often best understood by observing the forces
of nature they rule over. For instance, you can learn much
about Osun and her children by watching the rivers and
streams she rules over and observing that though she always
heads toward her sister Yemoja (the Sea) she does so on her
own circuitous route. Also observe how the babbling brook
and the flash flood reflect her changeable moods.
As you observe the orisas at work in the world and in your
own lives you will gain a better understanding of the and
their ways. Yes, they are complex, but no more so than any
other living being such as you or I. We are also blessed from
time to time in these orisas.

Orunmila is the orisa of wisdom, knowledge and divination.

He was the only orisa allowed to witness the creation of the
universe by Eledumare and bears witness to our destinies in
the making as well. This is the source of his title of Eleri Ipin
or Witness to Destiny in its Creation. His priests, the
babalawos or Fathers of the Secrets must devote
themselves entirely to th practice of divination and the
accompanying arts. Through the Table of If his priests
unfold the secrets of the universe and the secrets of the
unfolding of our lives.
Sango rules over lightning, thunder, fire, the drums and
dance. He is a warrior orisa with quick wits, quick temper
and is the epitome of virility. Sango took the form of the
fourth Alafin (Supreme King) of Oyo on earth for a time. He
is married to Oba and Oya. He is an extremely hot blooded
and strong-willed orisa that loves all the pleasures of the
world: dance, drumming, women, song and eating. To
acknowledge the greatness of this king, all in the religion
raise up on the toes of our feet (or rise out our chairs if we
are sitting) at the mention of his name. His colours are red
and white. He is most often represented by a double headed
axe.

Yemoja lives and rules over the seas and lakes. She also
rules over maternity in our lives as she is the Mother of All
Her name, a shortened version of Yeye Omo Eja means
Mother Whose Children are the Fish to reflect the fact that
her children are uncountable. All life started in the sea, the
amneotic fluid inside the mothers womb is a form of sea
where the embryo must transform and evolve through the
form of a fish before becoming a human baby. In this way
Yemoja displays herself as truly the mother of all. She
partakes of Olokuns abundance as the source of all riches
which she freely gives to her little sister Osun. She dresses
herself in seven skirts of blue and white and like the seas
and profound lakes she is deep and unknowable. Her
number is seven for the seven seas, her colours are blue and
white, and she is most often represented by the fish who are
her children.
Osun rules over the sweet waters of the world, the brooks,
streams and rivers, embodying love, fertility. She also is the
one we most often approach to aid us in money matters. She
is the youngest of the female orisas but retains the title of
Iyalode or great queen. She heals with her sweet waters and
with honey which she also owns.

Obatala is the pure and clean in heart and someone who is

very old and knowledgeable. He is the Orisa of wisdom and
someone who is wise and the one who molds human beings.
Ogun is the orisa of iron, war and labour. He is the owner of
all technology and because this technology shares in his
nature, it is almost always used first for war. He is the deity
that lead all Orisa to the earth and cleared the road for them.
Ogun is a hunter, blacksmith and a warrior. He is recognised
in the colours green and black.
Oduduwa is the Orisa of the progenitors (forefathers) of the
human race- he was a warrior. He also wears white like
Obatala, but is not to be confused with Obatala.
Oranfe (in Ile Ife) is the commander of the Thunder. He is
older than Sango. He is the one that the OOni went to to get
his crown.
Esu is a messenger of all Orisa. Whatever you are doing you
have to put something for Esu to make your sacrifice go
straight to Eledumare. Esu is not the one who blocks good
luck, it is man that has erred and needs to appease Esu to
help correct his mistakes.

Obaluwaye is the guardian of small pox and disease.

Osoosi is a tracker, hunter and guard of Obatala. He is just
like a soldier or police that protects Obatala.
Oluorogbo is the first writer on earth. He is a peacemaker.
He is the one that found Olomo and give it to Ogboni to use.
He tries to make peace between Obatala and Oduduwa.
Orisaoko is the commander of agriculture and farming.
Oreluere brings rain during drought by using his plant to
make the rain come.
Elefon Oro or Oro is a orisa that woman cannot be initiated
into. It has a lot of secret, but a woman can do the festival
for Oro if it is in her family line. Woman can also be
mounted with the Orisa, but not initiated into it.
Olojudo or Iro is the orisa that owns the crown.
Egungun is the commander of the ancestor and
masquerade.
Obalufon is the king of heaven.

Oranmiyan is the owner of the sword. He is the founder of

Benin and Oyo Kingdom. He is a warrior deity.
Obameri is the orisa of those that hang themselves with a
rope. It is a taboo for people to be hanged. This Orisa will
take that persons body away.
Alajogun is Obatalas messenger.
Aje is the owner of money and riches. Osaara or Osa is the
Owner of the lagoon.
Opa is a male hunter with a lot of dogs.
Yememolu is Obas wife. She is well water.
Owena is another river Orisa. It is a taboo to throw kolanut
into that river. Doing so annoys her.
Oba is another river Orisa. She is the first wife of Sango.
Oya is the commander of the wind and blowing breeze.
Favorite wife to Sango.
Erinle is another river Orisa. She is like Osun, but different.

Kori is the orisa of children.

Oke is the Orisa of the hill.
Moremi or Edi (The Iron Lady) is the wife of Oni. She is a
hero.
Osanyin is the owner of herbal medicine.
Aganju is the Orisa of White cloth, he is one of the children
of Obatala.
Orisa Ibeji is the Orisa of twins.
Olomo or Edan is the Orisa for Ogboni Cult.
