cases with highly loaded propellers with
large servo forces in combination with
moderate or long shafts.

EACG System

The varying working conditions of a vessel require flexible solutions in order to execute all tasks efficiently. The
goal is therefore that the ships total operating system is optimised to the ships actual service profile. With different
configurations of engines and gearboxes, combined with propellers and tunnel thrusters,,
y.
it is possible to achieve required flexibility, efficiency and economy.

DIESEL-MECHANICAL PROPULSION
These are systems at a reasonable price level with a simplistic
solution, suitable to all ship types with a narrow service profile.
Typical ships are cargo vessels, tankers and ferries. The system
can be driven by either a constant or slightly varying engine rpm.
Simultaneous running of an el-generator with fixed or floating
frequency is possible by a PTO.

SINGLE-IN SINGLE-OUT
SYSTEM WITHOUT
CLUTCH
A simple configuration where the
diesel engine is running the
propeller via a reduction gearbox
without clutch. The generator is
always running with the
propeller. Ideal for long distance
running with few port calls.

TWO SPEED GEARBOXES

CREATING PROGRESS BY
TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS
Scana optimises every propulsion configuration to the specific
vessels running condition. The shipowner focuses strongly on operating
costs. A tailor-made design to a vessels propulsion system can yield great
savings. A conventional propulsion system can be the best solution for one
vessel type, while others will benefit from a diesel-electric, hybrid or a twin
engine solution. Scana propulsion systems can be adapted to most types
of medium and high speed engines. The propeller range fits any slow speed
engine in a direct drive system.

Generator

For a more flexible solution, a

twin-in single-out configuration
can be chosen. The propeller is
driven by the father, the son
or both of the two diesel engines
via a twin-in single-out reduction
gearbox. By using the correct
combination of the two main
engines the specific fuel
consumption can be reduced.
This system gives good flexibility,
redundancy and safety in
operation.

Generator/
El. motor

This mechanical gear solution with PTO/PTI is mainly used in ships with
diesel engine and generator, both working at constant speed, but with
need for widely different levels of propulsion power.

Diesel
engine

The gearbox is arranged to enable several ways of power flow distribution.

Diesel power distributed partly to the propeller at the selected optimum
propeller speed, and partly to the generator running at constant speed.
The generator can be driven (idling or loaded), regardless of propeller
status.
Provided the generator is a combined el-motor, the diesel engine can be
disengaged and the propeller driven electrically at a propeller speed
optimum for the available el.power. In this way, even a modest el.power
(down to 12% of installed design power) is sufficient to operate the ship in
e.g. a low-speed service mode, or in an emergency situation (take home
condition).
Via the PTI, extra power supply from the main switchboard can be used
for boosting the total propulsion correspondingly.

A hybrid propulsion system based on one diesel engine and

one frequency-controlled electric motor is a simple and efficient
solution. Its suitable for ships with a low-power service range,
combined with a service point where full power is applied for
propulsion.
The gearbox secondary side is equipped with a single-speed
PTI, enabling the diesel to be released and the propeller to be
electrically driven according to the propeller optimum curve in
the entire low power range.
Driven by the diesel engine at a constant or slightly varying
rpm, the PTI shaft is idling as long as the propeller is clutched
in. This system will be arranged for optimum propeller speed at
this point.
In a boost propulsion mode, utilizing the max power of both
the diesel engine and the electro motor, the propeller speed
will be optimised under consideration of the relative duration of
the boost condition.

The required number of motors running the propeller via a

reduction gearbox depends on the required flexibility of the total
system by the need for propulsion power, available space, level
of redundancy and the service profile of the ship. By using
motors with variable rpm it is possible to run the system at full
flexibility in the entire operational mode. The wide range in the
Scana gearbox and PTO/PTI configurations gives numerous
possibilities for single and twin screw installations.

HYDRODYNAMIC DESIGN
Both CP- and FP-propellers are tailor-made to the particular vessel. Scana
bases its hydrodynamic propeller design on calculation methods from the latest
hydrodynamic theories and tank test results. The propeller blade data, such as
diameter, pitch, rpm, skew and load distribution, are always carefully selected
to give the best solution with respect to both efficiency and noise/vibration
characteristics. The blades are machined, polished and statically balanced,
according to the tolerance requirements of ISO 484 class l. Adaptations to other
class requirements can be carried out upon request. Scana propellers can be
supplied with certificates from any major class society, and to the highest ice class

Typical application for container, bulkers, tankers and cargo vessels
Application for diesel-electric propulsion system in segments such as
offshore support, fishing and research vessels
Available as monoblock or with adjustable bolted propellers for
fine-tuning of the propellers and the possibility to adjust and optimise
the propellers during the vessels lifecycle

CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLERS

The blade angle of CP-propellers varies from full ahead to full astern pitch.
A higher maximum bollard pull will be achieved with a CP-propeller, as it is
possible to optimise the relation between rpm, pitch and power
With variations in operating conditions, propeller performance is enhanced
with a CP-propeller due to optimum pitch/advance ratio
The CP-propeller increases flexibility if available engine power is reduced
It is possible to demount propeller blades with propeller inside the nozzle
No need for dry-docking for maintenance of servo system in an ACG
system when the servo system is in the gearbox

Feathering Propeller
A feathering propeller is an option
on standard CP-propeller systems.
On a feathering propeller the blade
angle can be arranged in line with the
water flow. This reduces the water
resistance, and gives the following
advantages:
Additional operational mode

Low oil pressure inside the propeller hub reduces risk for oil spillage
Low friction mechanism

PROPELLER NOZZLE

OPTIMUM PROPELLER EFFICIENCY

A nozzle increases the thrust at low speed/high propeller loading. This is essential

Scana serves a large variety of vessel applications. There is a continuing

as 30% by using a nozzle. The nozzles length/diameter ratio varies from 0,5 for

demand for propeller designs to be optimised in order to achieve the

low speed service to 0,4 for higher speed service. If the propeller loading is high,

highest energy efficiency. All Scana propeller configurations are designed

a nozzle may also be an efficient solution for ships with an operational profile

for the particular ship. Tailor-made blade design ensures optimum propeller

With twin screw installations and one

side out of operation it is possible to
reduce requirements for the shaft
brake with CP-propeller

Scana offers configurations from single-mode transmission systems to advanced systems, customised for specialised
vessels with a high number of operational modes. Stringent safety regulations and environmental concerns are in focus
when designing a system for any type of ship, to ensure cost efficiency and reliability.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES
All Scana gear designs are based on the gearhouse and PTO parts are
standardised in modules giving the unique flexibility to configure the gearbox
to each customers requirements. All gearboxes are designed in 3D and both
FEM and FMEA analysed in order to secure strength and reliability.

SOFTCLUTCH
The unique PLC-controlled Scana SOFTCLUTCH reduces the large torque
peaks which may occur in connection with clutch engagements in todays
complex propulsion system. Hydraulically operated wet plate multi-disc clutch
allows for engagement at full engine speed with zero propeller pitch.

WIDE RANGE OF PTO/PTI UNITS

On all gearboxes without an integrated PTO/PTI solution it is possible to
choose amongst a wide range of PTO/PTI modules which may be connected
to the main gearbox. The PTO/PTI modules are selected by definition of the
function of the gearbox and the propulsion system, and might be primary or
secondary driven with or without integrated clutch solutions for fully automatic
operation. Our two-step PTO/PTI solutions are available for special purpose
vessels.

CUSTOMISED REDUCTION
GEARBOXES
Scana has gained vast experience as a gearbox designer and manufacturer
since the early 1960s. Through being part of the Norwegian maritime cluster,
we have contributed to the definition and production of highly advanced
offshore vessels. The close relationship between Scana, ship owners and
class societies has led to the wide range of gear models and configurations
that makes our assortment one of the most extensive in the market.
