The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

As the earthly priesthood was nailed to the cross, the way was open for Christ to enter upon His
priestly ministry in heaven to officiate in man's behalf in the sanctuary above. To learn how the
anctuary in heaven runs we need to study the sanctuary on earth.

Levitical Services

1. What was the first sacred service introduced among the Israelites?
And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout
your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever. Seven days shall ye eat unleavened
bread; even the first day ye shall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoever eateth leavened
bread from the first day until the seventh day, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the first
day there shall be an holy convocation, and in the seventh day there shall be an holy convocation to
you; no manner of work shall be done in them, save that which every man must eat, that only may be
done of you. And ye shall observe the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsame day have I
brought your armies out of the land of Egypt: therefore shall ye observe this day in your generations
by an ordinance for ever. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at even, ye shall eat
unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even. Seven days shall there be no
leaven found in your houses: for whosoever eateth that which is leavened, even that soul shall be cut
off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land. Ye shall eat nothing
leavened; in all your habitations shall ye eat unleavened bread. Exodus 12:1420.
Answer: The Passover service.
NOTE: The Passover was followed by the seven days' feast of unleavened bread. On the second day
of the feast, the first fruits of the year's harvest, a sheaf of barley, was presented before the Lord. All
the ceremonies of the feast were types of the work of Christ. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt
was an object lesson of redemption, which the Passover was intended to keep in memory. The slain
lamb, the unleavened bread, the sheaf of first fruits, represented the Saviour. The Desire of Ages,
page 77.

2. Which homes were assured of deliverance from death?

And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the
houses, wherein they shall eat it. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where
ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy
you, when I smite the land of Egypt. Exodus 12:7, 13.
Answer: Homes that applied the blood on the two side posts and on the upper door post of their
houses.
NOTE: The Passover was to be both commemorative and typical, not only pointing back to the
deliverance from Egypt, but forward to the greater deliverance which Christ was to accomplish in
freeing His people from the bondage of sin. The sacrificial lamb represents the Lamb of God, in
whom is our only hope of salvation. Says the apostle, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. 1
Corinthians 5:7. It was not enough that the paschal lamb be slain; its blood must be sprinkled upon
the doorposts; so the merits of Christ's blood must be applied to the soul. We must believe, not only
that He died for the world, but that He died for us individually. We must appropriate to ourselves the
virtue of the atoning sacrifice. Patriarchs and Prophets, page 277.
3. What strict prohibition did God make regarding blood?
And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that
eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will cut
him off from among his people. For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you
upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for
the soul. Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any
stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood. And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel,
or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be
eaten; he shall even pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. For it is the life of all flesh; the
blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of
no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
Leviticus 17:1014.
Answer: That blood should not be eaten.
NOTE: From the earliest times, man was prohibited from eating blood. When permission was given
for man to eat flesh, the command was imperative that blood should not be eaten. Flesh with the life
thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. Genesis 9:4. Repeatedly Israel was forbidden the
eating of blood. Ye shall not eat anything with the blood. Leviticus 19:26. Only be sure that thou
eat not the blood: for the blood is the life; and thou mayest not eat the life with the flesh. The eating
of blood was so great a sin that the record states: Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of
blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people. Leviticus 7:27.To this day the orthodox Jew
refuses to eat any flesh with the blood. The instruction to refrain from the eating of blood is carried
over into the New Testament. The first general council convened by the apostles in Jerusalem
commanded all the Christian churches to abstain from eating blood. Acts 15:20. This command was
reinforced by the Holy Ghost. Verse 28. The precious blood of the Son of God, which was spilled in
Gethsemane and shed on Calvary, made atonement for the soul of man. The blood of Gods Son
cleanseth from all sin. God desired that man should recognize the purpose of the blood. F. C. Gilbert,
Messiah in His Sanctuary, 17, 18.

4. What is necessary for the remission of sins?

And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no
remission. Hebrews 9:22.
Answer: Blood is necessary for the remission of sins. This has a special meaning for us. If it was
necessary in ancient times for the unclean to be purified by the blood of sprinkling, how essential for
those living in the perils of the last days, and exposed to the temptations of Satan, to have the blood
of Christ applied to their hearts daily. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer
sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of
Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God? Hebrews 9:13, 14.
5. What was Moses shown while he was on Mount Sinai with God?
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee,
after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye
make it. . . . And look that thou make them after their pattern, which was shewed thee in the mount.
And thou shalt rear up the tabernacle according to the fashion thereof which was shewed thee in the
mount. Hollow with boards shalt thou make it: as it was shewed thee in the mount, so shall they
make it. And this work of the candlestick was of beaten gold, unto the shaft thereof, unto the
flowers thereof, was beaten work: according unto the pattern which the LORD had shewed Moses, so
he made the candlestick. Exodus 25:8, 9, 40; 26:30; 27:8; Numbers 8:4.
Answer: The heavenly sanctuary.
NOTE: Turning again to the book of Hebrews, the seekers for truth found that the existence of a
second, or new-covenant sanctuary, was implied in the words of Paul already quoted: 'Then verily the
first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary.' And the use of the
word 'also' intimates that Paul has before made mention of this sanctuary. Turning back to the
beginning of the previous chapter, they read: 'Now of the things which we have spoken this is the
sum: We have such an High Priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens; a Minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not
man.' Hebrews 8:1, 2.
Here is revealed the sanctuary of the new covenant. The sanctuary of the first covenant was pitched
by man, built by Moses; this is pitched by the Lord, not by man. In that sanctuary the earthly priests
performed their service; in this, Christ, our great High Priest, ministers at God's right hand. One
sanctuary was on earth, the other is in heaven.
Further, the tabernacle built by Moses was made after a pattern. The Lord directed him: 'According to
all that I show thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof,
even so shall ye make it. And again the charge was given, Look that thou make them after their
pattern, which was showed thee in the mount.' Exodus 25:9, 40. And Paul says that the first
tabernacle 'was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices;' that
its holy places were 'patterns of things in the heavens;' that the priests who offered gifts according to
the law served 'unto the example and shadow of heavenly things,' and that 'Christ is not entered into
the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to
appear in the presence of God for us.' Hebrews 9:9, 23; 8:5; 9:24. The Great Controversy, page 413.

6. How much of the design for the sanctuary was shown to Moses by God?
Then wrought Bezaleel and Aholiab, and every wise hearted man, in whom the LORD put wisdom
and understanding to know how to work all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary,
according to all that the LORD had commanded. Who serve unto the example and shadow of
heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for,
See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Exodus
36:1; Hebrews 8:5.
Answer: All manner of work for the service of the sanctuary.
NOTE: It was Christ who planned the arrangement for the first earthly tabernacle. He gave every
specification in regard to the building of Solomons temple. The One who in His earthly life worked
as a carpenter in the village of Nazareth was the heavenly architect who marked out the plan for the
sacred building where His name was to be honored. Christs Object Lessons, page 349.
7. What was the purpose of the sanctuary and its symbols?
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them. Hebrews 4:2.
Answer: The gospel of Christ reflects glory upon the Jewish age. It sheds light upon the whole
Jewish economy, and gives significance to the ceremonial law. The tabernacle, or temple, of God on
earth was a pattern of the original in Heaven. All the ceremonies of the Jewish law were prophetic,
typical of mysteries in the plan of redemption. The rites and ceremonies of the law were given by
Christ Himself, who, enshrouded in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, was the
leader of the hosts of Israel; and this law should be treated with great respect, for it is sacred. Even
after it was no longer to be observed, Paul presented it before the Jews in its true position and value,
showing its place in the plan of redemption and its relation to the work of Christ; and the great
apostle pronounces this law glorious, worthy of its divine Originator.
Christ Becomes A Priest

8. How does Paul show that the sanctuary prefigures even the saving work of Christ in heaven?
Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. And
almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. It
was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but
the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the
holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear
in the presence of God for us. Hebrews 9:2124.
Answer: The priests entered into the earthly with the blood of an animal as an offering for sin. Christ
entered into the heavenly sanctuary by the offering of His own blood. The earthly priests were
removed by death; therefore they could not continue long; but Jesus was a priest forever. Through the
sacrifices and offerings brought to the earthly sanctuary, the children of Israel were to lay hold of the
merits of a Saviour to come. And in the wisdom of God the particulars of this work were given us
that we might, by looking to them, understand the work of Jesus in the heavenly sanctuary.
NOTE: Important truths concerning the heavenly sanctuary and the great work there carried forward
for man's redemption were to be taught by the earthly sanctuary and its services. After His ascension,
our Saviour was to begin His work as our High Priest. Says Paul, Christ is not entered into the holy
places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the
presence of God for us. Hebrews 9:24. As Christ's ministration was to consist of two great divisions,
each occupying a period of time and having a distinctive place in the heavenly sanctuary, so the
typical ministration consisted of two divisions, the daily and the yearly service, and to each a
department of the tabernacle was devoted. As Christ at His ascension appeared in the presence of

God to plead His blood in behalf of penitent believers, so the priest in the daily ministration sprinkled
the blood of the sacrifice in the holy place in the sinner's behalf. Patriarchs and Prophets, page 357.
9. What could the sacrifices of the earthly sanctuary never achieve?
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never
with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. .
. . And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can
never take away sins. Hebrews 10:1, 11.
Answer: Before Christ came, a ceremonial holiness could be obtained by offering the blood of bulls
and of goats; but these sacrifices could not cleanse the conscience. They were but a representation of
Christ, the great sacrifice. The substance of all the sacrifices and offerings, Jesus came to this world
to do Gods will by offering Himself. He came as the worlds Redeemer, to stand at the head of
humanity. The Holy Spirit comes to man through Christ. We are given a decided testimony regarding
the value of Christs offering. Gods word declares, By the which will we are sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. It was a whole and entire sacrifice that was made
for us.
10. By contrast, what work does the sacrifice of Christ do for those who are sanctified?
For by one offering he [Christ] hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 10:14.

The Priesthood Changed

11. Why are the children of God no longer to look to the earthly sanctuary?
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but
into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us Now of the things which we have
spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the
Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord
pitched, and not man. Hebrews 9:24; 8:1, 2.
NOTE: When Jesus at His ascension entered by His own blood into the heavenly sanctuary to shed
upon His disciples the blessings of His mediation, the Jews were left in total darkness to continue
their useless sacrifices and offerings. The ministration of types and shadows had ceased. That door by
which men had formerly found access to God was no longer open. The Great Controversy, page 430.
12. What important qualification did Christ need in order to be our High Priest?
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful
and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.
For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. For
every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may
offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that
are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. Hebrews 2:17, 18; Hebrews
5:1, 2.
Answer: In order to elevate fallen man, Christ must reach him where he was. He took human nature,
and bore the infirmities and degeneracy of the race. He who knew no sin became sin for us. He
humiliated Himself to the lowest depths of human woe, that He might be qualified to reach man and
bring him up from the degradation in which sin had plunged him. For it became Him, for whom are
all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the captain of their
salvation perfect through sufferings. And being made perfect, He became the author of eternal
salvation unto all them that obey Him.

NOTE: The plan by which alone man's salvation could be secured, involved all heaven in its
infinite sacrifice. The angels could not rejoice as Christ opened before them the plan of redemption,
for they saw that man's salvation must cost their loved Commander unutterable woe. In grief and
wonder they listened to His words as He told them how He must descend from heaven's purity and
peace, its joy and glory and immortal life, and come in contact with the degradation of earth, to
endure its sorrow, shame, and death. He was to stand between the sinner and the penalty of sin; yet
few would receive Him as the Son of God. He would leave His high position as the Majesty of
heaven, appear upon earth and humble Himself as a man, and by His own experience become
acquainted with the sorrows and temptations which man would have to endure. All this would be
necessary in order that He might be able to succor them that should be tempted. Hebrews 2:18.
Patriarchs and Prophets page 64.

The Hope Of Sinners

13. How does the knowledge of having such a High Priest affect our relationship to God?
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was
in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of
grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. Having therefore,
brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, Let us draw near with a true heart in
full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed
with pure water. Hebrews 4:15, 16; Hebrews 10:19, 22.
Answer: The throne of grace is itself the highest attraction because occupied by One who permits us
to call Him Father. But God did not deem the principle of salvation complete while invested only
with His own love. By His appointment He has placed at His altar an Advocate clothed with our
nature. As our Intercessor, His office work is to introduce us to God as His sons and daughters. Christ
intercedes in behalf of those who have received Him. To them He gives power, by virtue of His own
merits, to become members of the royal family, children of the heavenly King. And the Father
demonstrates His infinite love for Christ, who paid our ransom with His blood, by receiving and
welcoming Christs friends as His friends. He is satisfied with the atonement made. He is glorified by
the incarnation, the life, death, and mediation of His Son. Testimonies for the Church, Volume6, page
363.
As a priest, Christ is now set down with the Father in His throne. Revelation 3:21. Upon the throne
with the eternal, self-existent One is He who hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows, who was
in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin, that He might be able to succor them that are
tempted. If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father. Isaiah 53:4; Hebrews 4:15; 2:18; 1
John 2:1. His intercession is that of a pierced and broken body, of a spotless life. The wounded
hands, the pierced side, the marred feet, plead for fallen man, whose redemption was purchased at
such infinite cost. The Great Controversy, page 416.

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

Just as the earthly sanctuary required cleansing, so does the heavenly. But the cleansing of the
heavenly sanctuary involves the work of the final judgment. Because he hath appointed a day, in the
which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained. Acts 17:31.
A most startling truth found in the Scriptures is that God has fixed a definite time for the beginning of
the final judgment. It has been revealed to His people, even to the very day.
This is set forth in the prophecy of Daniel 8:14. The time for the cleansing of the heavenly
sanctuary and the opening of the work of the judgment is unalterably fixed. The prophet records that
he heard the divine numberer of secrets (margin) declare: Unto two thousand and three hundred days;
then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. Let us delve into the lesson.

Daniel Seeks For Understanding

1. Who is represented by the ram and its two horns?
The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. Daniel 8:20.
Answer: The Bible is perfectly plain. One of the ram's horns was higher than the other, indicating
that one of the powers of this dual monarchy, Medo-Persia, was to be stronger than the other. Daniel
8 adds the point that the higher came up last. The Medes were at first the leading people, later the
Persians were in the ascendancy. Alexander the Great, of Grecia, about 200 years after Babylon's fall,
overcame the Persians under Darius III, at the battle of Arbela in 331 B.C. Phillip V. Meyers,
General History, p. 59 [Daniel 5:30-31; Jeremiah 51:11].
2. Who is represented by the he-goat?
The rough goat is the king of Grecia. Daniel 8:21.
Answer: The goat represents Grecia, or Greece. This is clearly stated. The leopard, with four wings,
in Daniel 7, indicated swiftness. The goat touched not the ground, so rapid was his movement. Both
these symbols for Grecia are fitting. Medo-Persia was to become great Grecia was to be very great.
3. Who is symbolized by the great horn between his eyes?
The great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. Daniel 8:21.
Answer: Alexander the Great, the first king, was to be broken when Grecia was strong. Alexander
led Grecia to world leadership, then died of a fever following a drunken spree, at the age of thirtytwo, in 323 B.C. Grecia was strong when Alexander was at the height of its glorious conquests.
The four horns represent the four divisions of Alexander's realm. The historian, Rawlinson, says, A
quadripartite [fourfold] division of Alexander's dominion was recognized. This took place twentytwo years after Alexander's death; when, after the Battle of Ipsus, his warring generals divided the
kingdom into four parts-east, west, north, south toward the four winds of heaven. The four horns
correspond to the four heads of the leopard of Daniel 7.

4. What empire is represented by the little horn that grew out of one of the four winds?
In the latter time of their kingdom, when transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce
countenance, and under standing dark sentences, shall stand up. Daniel 8:23.
Answer: Bible prophecy did not name specifically the successor of the Grecian kingdom. Daniel's
previous prophecies (Daniel 2 and 6) follow the pattern of the four world empires seen in historyBabylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, and Rome. The prophecy of Daniel 8 begins with the second, MedoPersia, and presents three empires.
This last kingdom was the one that was to stand up against the Prince of princes (Daniel 8:25). Jesus
Christ was that prince, and the Roman power put Him to death. So the little horn was Rome. The
little horn came forth from one of the four winds. The Romans defeated the Macedonians in 168 B.C.
5. What long time period is introduced into the prophecy at this point?
And He said unto me, unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the Sanctuary be
cleansed. Daniel 8:14.
6. To what period of earth's history does the vision point?
So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said
unto me, Understand, 0 son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision. Daniel 8:17.
Answer: A part of this prophecy is to reach to the time of the end. Since we are living in that time,
we should prayerfully study to know the meaning of that portion of the prophecy which applies in our

Gabriel Explains The 2300 Days

7. What happened to Daniel when the angel had proceeded thus far in his explanation of the
vision?
The vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision;
for it shall be for many days. And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days. Daniel 8:26-27.
Answer: The words rang in his ears, Unto two thousand and three hundred days: then shall the
Sanctuary be cleansed. What could they mean? Daniel was deeply concerned about the 2300 days,
but no explanation had been given to him. As chapter nine opens, we find Daniel still in distress over
the unexplained portion of the vision, the 2300 days. Let us notice what happened. First of all: Daniel
prayed for light on the Sanctuary.
In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over
the realm of the Chaldeans; in the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of
the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish
seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. And 1 set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by
prayer and supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: and I prayed unto the Lord my God.
Daniel 9:1-4.
Then, Gabriel came from God to give him understanding on the 2300 days.

Whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the
beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation. And he
informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and
understanding. I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter,
and consider the vision. Daniel 9:21-23
Read Daniel 9:24-27 again. Remember that the 70 weeks and the 2,300 days, or years, are associated.
In Bible prophecy it is found that, when time is mentioned in a symbolic setting, the application of
the time prophecy can be accurately calculated from history and using the rules which the Bible itself
establishes. So try to remember, too, that, in prophecy, a day stands for a year (Numbers 14:34;
Ezekiel 4:6). The priestly calendar month contained 30 days and their year 360 days (Gen. 7:11;
8:3,4). Hence a month in prophecy would equal 30 years and a prophetic year would equal 360 literal
years.
Note the following seven points based on Daniel 9:24-27:
{image}
A. Seventy weeks of seven days each would be 490 days, or literal years.
B. The 490 years are determined, or cut off, especially for the Jews (Daniel 9:24). They are cut off
from the 2,300 years, leaving 1,810 years.
C. The period was to begin with the date the Persians gave command to restore Jerusalem. This was
457 B.C. (Daniel 9:25; Ezra 7:11-26). The Babylonians had conquered the Jews. The Persians were
to restore Jerusalem. God raised up Cyrus to perform His work (Isaiah 44:28).
D. The first 7 weeks (7 x 7 = 49 years) were for the rebuilding of Jerusalem.
E. The next 62 weeks (7 x 62 = 434 years) were to reach to the Messiah, or the Anointed One. Jesus
was anointed at His baptism, A.D. 27 (Matthew 3: 13-17; Acts 10:38). When the clock of eternity
struck the hour, Jesus was there on the bank of the Jordan River, to be baptized by John. When the
fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son (Galatians 4:4).
F. The 70th week of 7 years would reach from A.D. 27 to AD. 34. In the midst of this week, AD. 31,
the Messiah was to be cut off, but not for Himself (Daniel 9:26). This was fulfilled when Christ was
crucified. The Messiah was also to cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease (Daniel 9:27).
When Christ died on the cross, the veil of the Temple of Jerusalem was torn from top to bottom by an
unseen hand (Matthew 27:51). A human hand would have torn it from the bottom to the top. God
thus signified that the sacrificial service of animals was over. The Lamb of God had been slain.
The remaining years of the 70th week, or the 490 years, reached to AD. 34. Stephen was stoned to
death by the Jews, and the great persecution of the church at Jerusalem followed (Acts 7:59; 8: 1).
The Jewish people as a nation had rejected the Messiah, and now He left their house desolated. The
490 years allotted to the Jewish nation were finished.
G. The 70 weeks, or 490 years, were part of the 2,300 years. Since the 490 years reach to AD. 34, the
remaining 1,810 years of the 2,300 years would reach to 1844. If you have difficulty in figuring the
date, 1844, and get 1843 instead (2300 minus 457 is 1843), just remember that it takes 457 full years
before Christ and 1,843 full years after Christ to make 2,300. Also there is no year 0. Since the
decree went forth after a part of the year 457 B.C. had passed, the end of the 2,300 full years would
fall after the close of A.D. 1843, well-over into the year of 1844.

At this time, the Sanctuary was to be cleansed. Many interpreters of prophecy living at that time
thought the cleansing of the Sanctuary meant the end of the world. But the expression, cleansing of
the Sanctuary, had a different meaning.
NOTE: The history of the Jews and their rejection of Christ is on record for our admonition. They
did not understand the true nature, character, and purpose of Jesus' mission to the world nor the time
of the visitation of their judgment. Yet the prophecies were clear on these points. Israel need not have
rejected Christ and brought such calamities upon their nation. Let us with earnest purpose and prayer
determine to know God's plan for us today, that we may cooperate with Him and accept fully the
saving light of prophetic truth.
Judgement Begins

8. How often was the earthly sanctuary cleansed?

He shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from
the uncleanness of the children of Israel. On that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to
cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the Lord. Leviticus 16:19, 20.
Answer: This building was cleansed once a year by a blood sacrifice. This yearly service was a
service of atonement and judgment. As the people confessed their sins day by day and sacrifices were
offered, blood was placed on the horns of the altar and the sins, in symbol, were transferred to the
sanctuary. Then, once a year, on the tenth day of the seventh month, final opportunity was given for
full disposition of sin. It was a solemn day indeed! It was now or never. It was the annual day of
judgment.
9. Was the heavenly sanctuary also to be cleansed?
Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the Sanctuary be cleansed. Daniel 8:14.
It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these;
but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ is not entered into the
holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear
in the presence of God for us Hebrews 9:23, 24.
Answer: At the close of the 2300 days (1844), the Sanctuary was to be cleansed. This was not the
earthly Sanctuary, because its work ended at the cross. When Jesus died on the cross, the old, or
earthly, sacrificial system which pointed to His life and death was no longer necessary. As far as God
was concerned, the earthly sanctuary service ended. Then, after His death, Christ rose from the dead
and ascended to heaven to begin His work as our high priest in the heavenly Sanctuary. Therefore it
must have been the heavenly Sanctuary. In 1844, the hour struck for the beginning of that cleansing.
At the time appointed, the great antitypical cleansing, or judgment. in the most holy place of the
Sanctuary in heaven began.
In 1844, Jesus entered the most holy apartment of the heavenly Sanctuary and began that work. There
is no sin in heaven, but a work of judgment is being done in connection with the records of sin
(Ecclesiastes 12:14; Revelation 20:12). Consider that when the fulness of the time was come, God
sent forth His Son (Galatians 4:4). At the end of the 483 years of Daniel 9, Jesus was baptized and
anointed by the Holy Ghost, just as predicted. That was in AD. 27 He was also crucified at the stroke
of the prophetic clock. Just as the first part of the 2300-day prophecy was fulfilled at the time
appointed, so the judgment hour began in 1844, at the end of the 2300-day prophetic period.
As the cleansing of the sanctuary was a day of judgment, the final day to get right with God, so the
cleansing of the heavenly Sanctuary is God's appointed time for judgment. Because He hath
appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world (Acts 17:31). This judgment was future in
Paul's day (Acts 24:25). It was judgment to come.

This is an investigative judgment, in which all cases must be decided before Christ comes, since He
brings His reward with Him. During the millennium a study will be made of the cases of the wicked,
with the redeemed saints assisting. The final sentences will be pronounced upon the wicked. Then the
execution of the sentences will be carried out at the end of the 1,000 years, after the wicked are
resurrected. So we have the three regular phases of judgment - the investigation now, the determining
of the sentences during the 1,000 years, and the execution of the sentences at the end of that period.
Christ will come soon after the judgment ends. Here are the words of God, indicating that, when the
judgment ends, Jesus' coming follows quickly:
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is
righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still. And, behold, I come
quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every man according as His work shall be Revelation
22:11-12 (Revelation 14:6-7 for the judgment message).

The Judgment Scene

10. What judgment scene did Daniel see in vision?
I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of Days did sit, whose garment was white as
snow, and the hair of His head like the pure wool: His throne was like the fiery flame, and His wheels
as burning fire. A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him: thousand thousands
ministered unto Him. and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him: the judgment was set,
and the books were opened. Daniel 7:9-10.
NOTE: The scene becomes very vivid as Christ comes to the judgment room.
I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and
came to the Ancient of Days, and they brought Him near before Him. Daniel 7:13
Jesus appears before God, the Father, as our advocate.
If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 1 John 2:1 (Acts
17:31).
The Ancient of Days is God, the Father (Daniel 7:9. 13). He is the great, unchanging, merciful, but
holy God. Myriads of angels attend the heavenly court. Jesus is our advocate. God created all things
by Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:9). He reconciled the world to Himself by Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians
5:18). And He will judge the world by Jesus Christ (Acts 17:31). Jesus is our Creator, our Redeemer,
and our Friend at the judgment bar of God. He will plead our case and win it if we will let Him.

Without A Wedding Garment

11. What should we understand about the judgment?
A. Heaven's court will take into consideration not only what a man did, but why he did it.
There will be complete understanding of all factors and therefore complete justice. There will be no
mistakes as in earthly courts, where innocent men have sometimes paid the penalty for other mens'
crimes. Were you ever accused of something you did not do? It will not be so there. Were you ever
given credit for a good deed you did not do? It will not be so there.
Though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before Me,
saith the Lord. Jeremiah 2:22. God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing.
Ecclesiastes 12:14

This is possible because there is a record of every man's life. God knows all. The eyes of the Lord are
in every place, beholding the evil and the good (Proverbs 15:3).
B. We will be judged from the books of record in heaven.
The dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books. Revelation 20:12.
One of these is the book of life (Revelation 13:8; Daniel 12: 1; (Philippians 4:3). And there is a book
of remembrance (Malachi 3:16). Also there is another book of iniquity (Jeremiah 17:1; Job 14:17;
Deuteronomy 32:32-36; Isa 65:6,7; Hosea 13:12).
And there is one, and only one, remedy. That is the blood of Jesus Christ. This precious lifeblood of
Jesus is available to all who will freely confess all sin and walk in the light of truth (1 John 1: 7-9).
The blood reveals God's merciful plan to forgive our sins. His justice and mercy together declare the
breadth of His love. Friend, let His love warm and win your heart. He wants only your allegiance of
love. Jesus is ready to be your advocate before God and present His blood for you.
The Law Of Liberty

12. What is the standard in the judgment?

Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said,
Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou
art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law
of liberty. James 2:10-12 (James 1;22-25; Ecclesiastes 12;13-14).
Answer: The holy, eternal, immutable, unchangeable Ten Commandments will be the standard in the
judgment. The law that says, Thou shalt not kill, etc. (James 2:10-12), will judge us; so Solomon
concluded, Fear God, and keep His commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall
bring every work into judgment (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).
We are born with a weak and fallen nature. This is the hereditary law of sin and death. But when
Jesus became the Son of Man, He conquered sin by combining human nature with His divine nature,
thereby condemning sin in the flesh. He now offers us His divine nature that the righteous
requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us also. We are born again when we by faith surrender
the will to Christ and are filled with His Spirit, and, thus strengthened, begin to live a life of
righteousness.
13. What motive should prompt us to keep Gods law?
If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15. See (2 Corinthians 5:14; John 15:10; 2
Thessalonians 2:8-12)
Answer: The test of a genuine Christian is given in the word of God. Jesus say, If ye love Me, keep
My commandments.John 14:15.
He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth Me: and he that loveth Me
shall be loved of My Father, and I will love him, and will manifest Myself to him. . . . If a man love
Me, he will keep My words: and My Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our
abode with him. He that loveth Me not keepeth not My sayings: and the word which ye hear is not
Mine, but the Father's which sent Me.John 14:21, 23 24.

How Shall We Stand

14. Are Gods commandments burdensome to those who are truly born again?
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not
grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that
overcometh the world, even our faith. 1 John 5:3, 4. (Psalm 119:47, 77, 97, 174).
15. Why will many who think they are born again be disappointed on the day of judgment?
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that
doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we
not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many
wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work
iniquity. Matthew 7:21-23 (1 John 2:36, 28).
16. What assurance is given to those who are faithful till the end of Christs intercession?
I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy
sins. Isaiah 43:25.
NOTE: All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as their atoning
sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the books of heaven; as they have become
partakers of the righteousness of Christ, and their characters are found to be in harmony with the law
of God, their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be accounted worthy of eternal life.
The Great Controversy, page 483.
By virtue of the atoning blood of Christ, the sins of all the truly penitent will be blotted from the
books of heaven. Thus the sanctuary will be freed, or cleansed, from the record of sin. Patriarchs and
Prophets, page 357, 358.
17. Who will be admitted into heaven?
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may
enter in through the gates into the city. Revelation 22:14 (Revelation 14:12)
Our salvation cost Jesus His life, but He offers salvation to us freely if we will but surrender our
sinful natures to Him who promised to take away our sins (1 John 3:5) and to write His law on our
hearts. We will be judged according to Gods law, for our works show whether we have been born
again (1 John 2:29). Let no one deceive you on this point (1 John 3:6, 7).
Are you daily, by His grace, working to form a character tha will stand the test of the judgment ?

3. The Beast Of Revelation 13 & 17
Go To Quiz (offline/online)

Go to Part #3 Lessons Index

One of God's strongest warning for the last days is against receiving the mark of the Beast. Before
identifying this mark, let us learn the identity of the Beast.
The Beast
The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

1. What persecuting power did John see coming on the scene?

And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and
ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. Revelation
13:1.
NOTE: In chapter 13 (verses 1-10) is described another beast, 'like unto a leopard,' to which the
dragon gave 'his power, and his seat, and great authority.' This symbol, as most Protestants have
believed, represents the papacy, which succeeded to the power and seat and authority once held by
the ancient Roman Empire. Of the leopardlike beast it is declared: 'There was given unto him a
mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. . . . And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against
God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given
unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all
kindreds, and tongues, and nations.' This prophecy, which is nearly identical with the description of
the little horn of Daniel 7, unquestionably points to the papacy. The Great Controversy, page 439.
2. How did John describe the beast that he saw and when did the beast appear?
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his
mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
Revelation 13:2.
Answer: It appeared following the dragon power of chapter 12. If it is correct to identify the dragon
with the Roman Empire in the days of Christ, then a power is to be identified following the Roman
Empire, which is closely related to it. The prophecy declares that the dragon [Roman Empire or
pagan Rome] gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
NOTE: In Daniel 7, the prophet was shown four successive persecuting powers under the symbolism
of monsters, a winged lion, representing Babylon; a deformed bear, representing Medo-Persia; a
four-headed, four winged leopard, representing Greece; and a ten-horned beast representing Rome.
The beast John saw resembled all these monsters. The papacy is idolatrous, as was Babylon (see
Daniel 3). Medo-Persia claimed infallibility (see Daniel 6:8, 15) as does the papacy. Greek
philosophers taught the immortality of the soul, a central teaching of the papacy, while Imperial
Rome provided the seat and authority of the papacy.
3. What is the similarity between the first beast of Revelation chapter 13 and the whore of
chapter 17?
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and
ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy Revelation
13:1.

So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet
coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. . . . And here is the
mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. . . .
And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but
receive power as kings one hour with the beast. Revelation 17:3,9,12.
Answer: The description of the whore is parallel to the first beast of Revelation 13 that also has
seven heads and ten horns (v. 7) indicating that both symbols represent the same entity that being
the Roman Catholic papal system. Furthermore, the whore is described as sitting on seven mountains
(v. 9). Rome has frequently been identified as the City of Seven Hills, from classical times down to
contemporary time.

Here Is Wisdom
4. What especially was John shown about the beast?
And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given
unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to
blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. Revelation 13:5-6.
And he shall speak great words against the most High Daniel 7:25.
Why doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only? Mark 2:7.
The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because
that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. John 10:33.
Answer: The Bible identifies several things as blasphemous. For a man to make himself God is
blasphemous. Paul prophesied that the antichrist would claim to be God. See 2 Thessalonians 2:4.
This claim has been made by the supposedly infallible popes. For example: The Catholic
Encyclopaedia Vol. 6, page 48, describes the pope as: 'not a mere man, but as it were God and the
vicar of God.' Pope Leo XIII in one of his encyclical letters wrote: 'We hold upon this earth the place
of God Almighty.' Pope Innocent III wrote: 'The pope is not simply a man but rather God on earth.'
He also wrote: 'The pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ but he is Jesus Christ Himself
hidden under the veil of flesh.' 'The Pope is crowned with a triple crown as king of heaven and earth
and of the lower regions. Moreover the superiority and the power of the Roman pontiff by no means
pertains only to earthly things, but even over angels, than whom he is greater....If angels err in the
faith, or think contrary to the faith, they could be judged and excommunicated by the Pope, for he is
of so great dignity and power that he forms one and the same tribunal with Christ...The Pope is as it
were God on earth, chief king of kings.' Prompta Bibliotheca Canonica Moralis Theologica, Vol. 6,
pages 25-29.
NOTE: The Bible describes as blasphemy the practice of claiming to forgive sin. Roman Catholic
priest Michael Muller expresses the papal doctrine thus: 'The priest not only declares that the sinner
is forgiven, but he really forgives him; so great is the power of the priest, that the judgments of
heaven itself are subject to his decision.' (The Catholic Priest, published by Kreuzer Bros., 1876) The
Bible also describes as blasphemy the claim of a man to be God. The Catholic Encyclopaedia
(Volume 6 page 48) quotes the following from Ferraris' Prompta Bibliotheca Canonica Juridica
Moralis Theologica: 'The pope is of so great dignity and so exalted that he is not a mere man, but as
it were God, and the vicar of God The Pope is as it were God on earth, sole sovereign of the
faithful of Christ, chief king of kings.'

5. What descriptions in Daniel, compared with what we read in Revelation 13:5-7, show that
the Beast power is the same as the Little Horn of Daniel 7?
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most
High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times
and the dividing of time. Daniel 7:25.
Note: A time is a year (Daniel 4:16-32; Revelation 12:6,14). A time, two times, and a half a time
equal 3 1/2 years, or 42 months, as denoted in Revelation 13. Revelation 12:14 refers to this period of
time when the Beast rules as 1260 prophetic days (or literal years). Symbolic time prophecies are
based on 30-day months, making 360 days a year. 3 1/2 times 360 equals 1260 days. Revelation 11:2,
3; 12:6, 14; 13:5; Daniel 12:7; Ezekiel. 4:6; Numbers 14:34.
6. What does Paul call this power who seeks to exalt himself above God?
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away
first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above
all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing
himself that he is God. . . And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with
the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:3, 4,
8.
Answer: The man of sin, Wicked and the son of perdition.
Note: The special characteristic of the beast, and therefore of his image, is the breaking of God's
commandments. Says Daniel, of the little horn, the papacy: He shall think to change times and the
law. Daniel 7:25, R.V. And Paul styled the same power the man of sin, who was to exalt himself
above God. One prophecy is a complement of the other. Only by changing God's law could the
papacy exalt itself above God; whoever should understandingly keep the law as thus changed would
be giving supreme honor to that power by which the change was made. Such an act of obedience to
papal laws would be a mark of allegiance to the pope in the place of God. The Great Controversy
1911 ed., page 446.
7. What further aspect of the beast's activities was John shown?
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints and to overcome them: and power was given
him over all kindreds and tongues and nations. Revelation 13:7.
NOTE: 'That the Church of Rome has shed more innocent blood than any other institution that has
ever existed among mankind, will be questioned by no Protestant who has a competent knowledge of
history. The memorials, indeed, of many of her persecutions are now so scanty, that it is impossible
to form a complete conception of the multitude of her victims, and it is quite certain that no power of
imagination can adequately realize their sufferings.' Dr W. E. H. Lecky, History of the Rise and
Influence of the Spirit of Rationalism in Europe, Volume 2, page 32.
'From the birth of popery in 606 to the present time, it is estimated by careful and credible historians
that more than fifty millions of the human family have been slaughtered by popish persecutors, an
average of more than forty thousand religious murders for every year of the existence of Popery.' Dr
J. Dowling, History of Romanism, pages 541-542.

8. What further identifying feature of the beast was John shown?

Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number
of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Revelation 13:18.
Answer: The Pope's triple crown holds the inscription Vicarius Filii Dei, which is latin for Vicar of
the Son of God. Lets count the values of this name.
V -- 5 | F -- 0 | D -- 500
I -- 1 | I -- 1 | E -- 0
C -- 100 | L -- 50 | I -- 1
A -- 0 | I -- 1
R -- 0 | I -- 1
I -- 1
U -- 5
S -- 0
Vicarius 112
Filii 53
Dei + 501
---------666

NOTE: In the (Roman Catholic) Douai Bible, the following footnote is found under Revelation
13:18: '666. The numeral letters of his name shall make up this number.' In several ancient languages
(e.g. Latin, Greek and Hebrew), no separate numerals existed and letters of the alphabet were given
numerical values.
It has been known for four hundred years that the title 'Vicarivs Filii Dei' (Vicar or Deputy of the Son
of God) has the numerical value of 666. At least six Roman Catholic authorities (Decretum of
Gratian, founder of the system of Canon Law 1148-1582, Revised Edition of the 'Decretum' 1582present, the Catholic Encyclopaedia Volume 6 page 48, Cardinal Manning in The Temporal Power of
the Vicar of Christ, pages 231-232, Labbe in Sacrosanta concilia ad regiam editionem exacta,
Volume 1 page 1534, and the Donation of Constantine (the forgery used by the papacy for centuries
to establish its authority 'over all kindreds, tongues and nations') confirm this to be a title claimed by
the pope. The pope is hailed by this title as the crown is placed on his head at his coronation. The title
means 'vicar of the Son of God.' A vicar is one who stands in for another, a deputy or substitute. The
Greek word 'antichristos', used by John in 1 John 2:18 22, 1 John 4:3 and 2 John v.7, means one who
stands in for Christ, a deputy or substitute for Christ, 'anti-' in Greek being a prefix meaning 'in place
of'.
Thus when the pope describes himself as Vicar of Christ, he is in effect claiming to be antichrist.
Andreas Helwig of Friedland, who was the first to reach this conclusion, had already concluded from
other passages that the papacy is referred to here. He showed that not only must the name or title
yield the number 666; it must also agree with the other Bible evidence identifying the antichrist. It
must not be a term of abuse applied by his enemies but must be a title acceptable to the antichrist and
indeed one of which he can boast.
Wounded To Death

9. At the end of the beast's period of power, what did John see happening to it?
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death: and his deadly wound was healed and all
the world wondered after the beast. . . . He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that
killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Revelation 13:3 10.
NOTE: Through the great powers controlled by paganism and the papacy, symbolized by
the dragon and the leopard-like beast, Satan for many centuries destroyed God's faithful
witnesses. Under the dominion of Rome, they were tortured and slain for more than a
thousand years; but the papacy was at last deprived of its strength, and forced to desist
from persecution. The Great Controversy 1884 ed., page 276.
'Power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.' And, says the prophet, 'I saw one of
his heads as it were wounded to death.' And again: 'He that leadeth into captivity shall go into
captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword.' The forty and two months are
the same as the 'time and times and the dividing of time,' three years and a half, or 1260 days, of
Daniel 7, the time during which the papal power was to oppress God's people. This period began
with the supremacy of the papacy, A.D. 538, and terminated in 1798. At that time the pope was made
captive by the French army, the papal power received its deadly wound, and the prediction was
fulfilled, 'He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity.' The Great Controversy, page 439.

10. Was the wound in fact fatal to the beast?

And his deadly wound was healed and all the world wondered after the beast. Revelation 13:3, last
part.
NOTE: 'What was it that constituted the deadly wound? It was the stripping from the Papacy of its
political power. The church continued as a religious body but the political element was destroyed.'
Cooke, The Antichrist 666, page 22.
The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. After this, says the
prophet, 'his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.' Paul states plainly
that the 'man of sin' will continue until the Second Advent. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-8. To the very close
of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the Revelator declares, also referring to the
papacy: All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of
life. Revelation 13:8. In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive homage in the
honour paid to the Sunday institution that rests solely upon the authority of the Roman Church. Since
the middle of the nineteenth century, students of prophecy in the United States have presented this
testimony to the world. In the events now taking place is seen a rapid advance toward the fulfillment
of the prediction. The Great Controversy, page 578.
11. What is world's reaction to the healing of the deadly wound?
All the world wondered after the beast. . . And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose
names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Revelation 13:3, last part 8.
NOTE: The Papacy's revival and restoration has amazed the world. One hundred years ago, no
Roman Catholic could hold public office in Great Britain or the United States. The Roman Catholic
Church was an unpopular, hated and despised church. It was considered by millions to be unchristian,
pagan, idolatrous, degrading, oppressive and even a curse to the community. Today, Roman
Catholicism is looked upon in exactly the opposite light. It is an amazing reversal of public opinion.
Cooke, The Antichrist 666, page 23.

The Judgment Of The Great Whore

12. What was John next shown in his vision?
And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto
me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many
waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth
have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. Revelation 17:1-2. (Compare Revelation
16:19.)
NOTE: The time is near when He will say, 'Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and
shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be
overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their
iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.' Isaiah 26:20, 21.
Men who claim to be Christians may now defraud and oppress the poor; they may rob the widow and
fatherless; they may indulge their Satanic hatred because they cannot control the consciences of
God's people; but for all this God will bring them into judgment. They 'shall have judgment without
mercy' that have 'showed no mercy.' (James 2:13.) Not long hence they will stand before the Judge of
all the earth, to render an account for the pain they have caused to the bodies and souls of His

heritage. They may now indulge in false accusations, they may deride those whom God has
appointed to do His work, they may consign His believing ones to prison, to the chain gang, to
banishment, to death; but for every pang of anguish, every tear shed, they must answer. God will
reward them double for their sins. Concerning Babylon, the symbol of the apostate church, He says to
His ministers of judgment, 'Her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her
iniquities. Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works:
in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.' Revelation 18:5, 6. Christ's Object Lessons, page
178.
13. How was Babylon portrayed in this vision?
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet
coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was
arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a
golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication. Revelation 17:3-4.
Compare verse 18.
Answer: A woman in prophecy represents a church while a beast (the Greek word means a ferocious
beast, a totally different word from that used to describe the four beings, described in the King James
Bible as 'the four beasts') represents a persecuting power. A woman riding a beast therefore signifies
a church controlling and directing a persecuting power, a union of church and state. The description
of the woman includes purple, scarlet, gold and precious stones, all used in the sanctuary with
symbolic significance. The scarlet represents sin and the blood of Christ, the sin-bearer. Purple
represents the kingship of Christ. Gold represents faith and love, two essential elements of the
Christian life while the precious stones represented the people of God, worn upon the heart of the
high priest, thus symbolizing the tender care of Christ for His people. Babylon assumes some of the
ornaments of the sanctuary but purely for adornment. Missing is the colour blue, which in sanctuary
symbolism represented the law of God, and fine linen, representing the righteousness of saints. (See
Numbers 15:37-40 and compare Exodus 25:4. See also Revelation 19:8.) Babylon and her daughters
claim to continue the worship of God while omitting obedience to His law. The result is degeneracy
and persecution of God's faithful saints.
14. Where was Babylon when John saw her in his vision?
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness. Revelation 17:3.
Answer: John is transported in vision forward to the time when Babylon is in the wilderness. It is
important to remember this fact in interpreting the symbolism which follows. Just as the true church
of God was driven into the wilderness in order to find safety from the persecutions of the 1260-year
tribulation, so in her turn Babylon, the persecuting power, would suffer a period of persecution and
obscurity from 1798 onwards. See Revelation 13:10.

The Mother Of Harlots

15. What name was in the forehead of the great whore?
And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE
MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. Revelation 17:5.
NOTE: The woman (Babylon) of Revelation 17 is described as 'arrayed in purple and scarlet colour,
and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of
abominations and filthiness:...and upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon the
Great, the mother of harlots.' Says the prophet: 'I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints,
and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus.' Babylon is further declared to be 'that great city, which
reigneth over the kings of the earth.' Revelation 17:4-6, 18. The power that for so many centuries
maintained despotic sway over the monarchs of Christendom is Rome. The purple and scarlet colour,

the gold and precious stones and pearls, vividly picture the magnificence and more than kingly pomp
affected by the haughty see of Rome. And no other power could be so truly declared 'drunken with
the blood of the saints' as that church which has so cruelly persecuted the followers of Christ
Babylon is said to be 'the mother of harlots.' By her daughters must be symbolized churches that cling
to her doctrines and traditions, and follow her example of sacrificing the truth and the approval of
God, in order to form an unlawful alliance with the world. The Great Controversy, page 382.
16. What especially did John notice about the great whore?
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of
Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. Revelation 17:6.
NOTE: In the thirteenth century was established that most terrible of all the engines of the papacy,-the Inquisition. The prince of darkness wrought with the leaders of the papal hierarchy. In their secret
councils, Satan and his angels presided, while unseen in the midst stood an angel of God, taking the
fearful record of their iniquitous decrees, and writing the history of deeds too horrible to appear to
human eyes. Babylon the great was drunken with the blood of the saints. The mangled forms of
millions of martyrs cried to God for vengeance upon that apostate power. The Great Controversy,
1884 ed., page 63.

Was, And Is Not, And Shall Ascend

17. What three phases of the great whore's career was John told of?
And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman,
and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. The beast that thou
sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that
dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the
foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. . . And the beast
that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition. Revelation
17:7-8, 11.
A. The Beast that was: The Roman church began in 538 AD and continued until Napoleon sent in
General Berthier in 1798 AD
B. ...and is not: From 1798 AD until the signing of the Lateran treaty in 1929 the Roman
Church/state was non-existent.
C. ...yet is: From 1929 to present the Roman Church has been a church state.
18. What was John told about the seat of the beast?
And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the
woman sitteth. Revelation 17:9. The dragon gave him his power and his seat and great authority.
Revelation 13:2. last part.
NOTE: In the sixth century the papacy had become firmly established. Its seat of power was fixed
in the imperial city, and the bishop of Rome was declared to be the head over the entire church.
Paganism had given place to the papacy. The dragon had given to the beast his power, and his seat,
and great authority. Revelation 13:2. The Great Controversy 1911 ed, page 54.
Seven Kings

19. At the time of the scene John saw in his vision, how many of the seven kings had fallen?
And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he
cometh, he must continue a short space. Revelation 17:10.

NOTE: Five of them have fallen. John was taken in vision to the time of the sixth king: five are
fallen, and one is. He comes after the first five have fallen. Again, it is not coincidental that when
taken in vision, John was taken to the time of the sixth king. It is a divine hint by which God is
guiding us to focus our attention on this particular king, as he will play a very important role in the
end-time events.
20. So who are the seven kings/popes?
Pius XI was the first Roman Catholic pope (from February 6, 1922) who became king as well on
February 11, 1929. He along with Mussolini, engineered the Lateran Treaty.

21. What is destined to take place after the prophesied short monarchy of Benedict XVI?
And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Revelation 17:11.
Here, we learn the following:
1. The Roman Catholic Church was once a beast (up to 1798), but now is not (as she has been in
the wilderness experience since 1798); however, she will regain the beast status (meaning she
will come out of her wilderness experience) after the fall of the seventh king, Benedict XVI.
2. The next one to come after Benedict XVI will be one of the other seven kings. But he will no
longer be considered a mere king, but will be a beast as well; for with him the Roman
Catholic Church will regain her former power to persecute her enemies.
3. The eighth, when he comes, will be the last; for he goeth into perdition.

The Eighth King

22. Who is the eighth who will restore the beast status to the Roman Catholic Church anew?
The beast that thou sawest was [the Catholic Church was once a beast until 1798] and is not [during
her wilderness experience], and shall ascend [after the fall of Benedict XVI, the eighth will restore
her beast status] out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition. Revelation 17:8.
Answer: From this verse we can conclude the following:
A. Only one more king will come after Benedict XVI, and he will be the eighth. And this king will restore
the beast status to the Roman Catholic Church for during his reign persecution of God's people
will resume again, just as it was in the Middle Ages.
B. That the eighth king will ascend from the "bottomless pit", and in due course will "go into perdition."
For an in-depth understanding of the very important prophecy of Revelation 17, please click here.
23. How was John shown that God is in control of these events?
For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until
the words of God shall be fulfilled. Revelation 17:17. that the living may know that the most High ruleth

in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. . .
the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. . . the most High ruleth
in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. Daniel 4:17, 25 & 32.
NOTE: '"The Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth
also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain." Isaiah 26:21. "And this shall be the plague
wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume
away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue
shall consume away in their mouth. And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the
Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold everyone on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand
shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour." Zechariah 14:12, 13. In the mad strife of their own fierce
passions, and by the awful outpouring of God's unmingled wrath, fall the wicked inhabitants of the earth,
priests, rulers, and people, rich and poor, high and low. "And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from
one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered,
nor buried." Jeremiah 25:33.' The Great Controversy, page 656.

The state of corruption and apostasy that in the last days would exist in the religious world, was presented to the prophet
John in the vision of Babylon, "that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth." Revelation 17:18. Before its
destruction the call is to be given from heaven, "Come out of her, My people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that
ye receive not of her plagues." Revelation 18:4. As in the days of Noah and Lot, there must be a marked separation from
sin and sinners. There can be no compromise between God and the world, no turning back to secure earthly treasures.
"Ye cannot serve God and mammon." Matthew 6:24. Patriarchs and Prophets, page 167.

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

There is much confusion in the world today concerning this mark. Since receiving this mark is of
utmost importance to avoid, God surely must tell us exactly what it is, for He would not give such a
stern warning against receiving the mark of the beast and then keep the nature of this mark hidden
from our understanding.

The Sign Of God's Authority

1. What is the true definition of the Mark?
Answer: The Bible uses the words mark, sign, and seal interchangeably. According to
Revelation 13:16, the mark of the beast is received either in a persons forehead or in his right hand.
The seal of God, on the other hand, is received only in the forehead, as Revelation 7:2,3 shows. And
I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a
loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, Saying, Hurt not the
earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.
2. What does 'wind' represent in Bible Prophecy?
Answer: Winds in Bible prophecy represent war and strife. These four angels, pictured in verse one
as holding back the four winds of the earth, prevent the war, strife, and trouble which is coming on
the earth from occurring until the people who are to receive the seal of God have been sealed. And
after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds
of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. Revelation
7:1.
As soon as the people of God receive His seal, the angels will release the four winds, and the earth
will suffer the trauma of the worst trouble since it was created.
3. If we can discover what the seal of God is, we will then be able to determine exactly what the
mark of the beast is since it is the opposite of the seal of God. So what is the seal of God?
Answer: Isaiah 8:16 refers to the seal of God. Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my
disciples. Here we see that the seal of God has something to do with His law. This, of course, stands
to reason, for if a king puts out a proclamation of, for instance, ten laws, what must he do to make it
official? He must seal it with his seal so that the people know it is from the king. Otherwise it would
only be a piece of paper without signature, a proclamation with no authority.
The great King of the universe has issued Ten Commandments. In order to make them official, He
must have placed His seal in these laws.

The Seal Of God

4. What constitutes a seal?

A seal is something having to do with legal affairs. A law is stamped with the seal of the ruling
government. The seal of any monarch or official must include these three elements: (1) his name, (2)
his title, (3) the territory over which he is empowered to rule.
When the government seal is on a law, or on currency, it is official. The whole loyal nation stands
behind it. God's seal makes His law official, and the whole loyal universe stands behind it. Anyone
disloyal to the seal of the government, and to the law upon which it is attached, is looked upon as
being disloyal to the government itself.
5. Where in the Ten Commandments do we find the seal of God?
Just as a government ruler's seal is placed in his law to make it official, God's seal is in His law.
Here's what God says: Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. Isaiah 8:16.

6. Where are we sealed?

In the forehead. His law is in our hearts. Under the new covenant, His promise is: This is the
covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their
hearts, and in their minds will I write them. Hebrews 10:16.
7. How are we sealed?
The Holy Spirit places the seal of God in our foreheads when we choose it. The forehead contains the
frontal lobe. This section of the brain is where our conscience is. When you receive the seal of God in
your forehead, it means you have it in your conscience. You believe in it. You're loyal to it.
Just as the government ruler uses his seal of government to enforce the laws of the land, God uses
His seal to enforce His law. The beast will use his seal (mark), to try to enforce his law in place of
God's. Where will you find the seal of God with its three parts? In the very center of His law. Take a
close look:
Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour and do all thy work: But the
seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work ... For in six days the
Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore
the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8-11.
This is the only place in the Bible where you will find God's seal. Here are the three parts of the seal.
1. His name - the Lord.

2) His title - thy God (Creator).

3) His territory - heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is.
That is fantastic! No wonder Satan has worked so hard to hide the truth of the sacred Sabbath from
us. It's God's sign!
You may ask Is the Sabbath really the seal of God? Look at Ezekiel 20:12. Moreover also I gave
them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them that they might know that I am the Lord that
sanctify them (The word sign means the same as seal- see Romans 4:11).
Ezekiel 20:20 also indicates that the Sabbath is Gods seal. And hallow my sabbaths; and they shall
be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.
8. How long will the Sabbath be a sign, a seal, a mark between God and His people?
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the
Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. And it shall come to pass, that, from one new moon
to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the
Lord. Isaiah 66:22, 23.
Answer: This scripture indicates that the seal of God will be forever, for His people will worship and
keep holy every Sabbath day in the new earth, forever. Remember that all of these Old Testament
texts are applicable to us today, for 2 Timothy 3:16,17 tells us that All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, [thoroughly] furnished unto all good works.
Sabbath observance is the sign of Gods true Christians, and it will always be the sign of Gods true
Christians, for a perpetual covenant. (Exodus 31:16).
What could be clearer? The seal of God is His Sabbath. Satan knew that he had to get at this very
part. No wonder the beast ripped it out and put in a substitute!

Antichrist Sign Of His Authority

9. But who is the BEAST that we are talking about and what are some quick facts that prove
what the BEAST is?
Answer: In identifying the beast, God is not talking about sincere people who are involved with it
ignorantly. He is talking about the system; the leaders, who know what they are doing and
deliberately disobey and change the word of God. Our God is a tender Father. He only holds
accountable those who understand what the Bible commands and knowingly disobey, or, those who
turn away from hearing His word and are willingly ignorant.

The Beast exists now. Many honest Christians who are now involved with it will soon learn the
facts, They will hear God's call to come out of it -- and they will respond.
Don't be fooled! The beast is not some computer somewhere. That is only a smoke screen to get
people off the track that the Bible points out. God's word makes it so clear that even an honest child
can see it. This next point is amazing!
...and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. Revelation 13:2.
By the way, thank the Lord Jesus Christ for allowing you to be alive in these last days. We now have
the benefit of Historic records at our fingertips today. History is mostly behind us! We have PROOF,
the prophecies were fulfilled exactly as the Bible said.
First notice that the BEAST, the WHORE, and the ANTICHRIST power are different aspects
of the same entity. There are more than sixteen characteristics of this power in the Holy Bible.
The following points will make this clear:
Daniel, chapter

Revelation,
chapter 13

Babylon

(A) The whore will be a religious (church) power & state (Civic) power combined. Revelation 17:3,
So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured
beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Woman = Church (Jeremiah 6:2, I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate
woman.) Beast = Nation (Daniel 7:23, Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom
upon earth...)
Roman Catholic Vatican is a Church and a Nation at the same time.
(B) The whore of Babylon will sit upon 7 hills. Revelation 17:9, And here is the mind which hath
wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.
Documented Roman Catholic source states It is within the city of Rome, called The City on Seven
Hills, that the entire area of Vatican State Proper is now confined The Catholic Encyclopedia, p. 529.
ENCYCLOPDIA BRITANNICA: Seven Hills of Rome group of hills on or about which the
ancient city of Rome was built. The original city of Romulus was built upon Palatine Hill (Latin:
Mons Palatinus). The other hills are the Capitoline, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, and
Aventine (known respectively in Latin as the Mons Capitolinus, Mons Quirinalis, Mons Viminalis,
Mons Esquilinus, Mons Caelius, and Mons Aventinus).
(C) The Beast will rise from the sea Revelation 13:1, And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a
beast rise up out of the sea.

Sea = peoples, nations and tongues ( Revelation 17:15, And he saith unto me, The waters which thou
sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.)
Roman Catholicism arose out of Western Europe with a multitude of peoples, nations, and tongues as
parishioners. At present the Roman Catholic church sports the highest number of peoples, nations
and tongues the world over. Over 100 Nations have state representatives at the Vatican.
(D) The four Beasts of Daniel will join as one in the last days as Antichrist. Daniel 7:2, Daniel spake
and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great
sea.
Documented Roman Catholic source states: In a certain respect, she (the papacy) has copied her
organization from that of the Roman Empire, has preserved and made fruitful the philosophical
intuitions of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, borrowed from both Barbarians and the Bysantine Roman
Empire, but always remains herself, thoroughly digesting all elements drawn from external sources. Andre Retif, The Catholic Spirit, trans by Dom Aldhelm Dean, Vol. 88 of the Twentieth Century
Encyclopedia of Catholicism (New York, Hawthorne Books, 1959) p. 85
Roman Catholic Author, Malachi Martin states in his book The Keys of this Blood: He is protected by
four governments (p. 120)
(E) Antichrist will be a strong Political power. Revelation 13:3, all the world wondered after the
beast. Revelation 13:7, ... power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
Roman Catholic Author, Malachi Martin states in his book The Keys of this Blood: He is as
determined to be world ruler as was Constantine in his day (p.49) He is protected by four
governments (p. 120) He is the best-known person of the 20th century (p. 123) He is personal friends
with the leaders of 91 countries (p. 490) People of the world seem to him ready for strong worldwide
moral government with control (p. 160). Sixteen thousand journalists covered his American visit (p.
490)
(F) The Roman Church would reign for 1260 years before being wounded unto death. Revelation
13:5, And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was
given unto him to continue forty and two months.
The forty two months of Rev 13:5 and the time, and times and dividing a time of Daniel 7:25 equal
the same thing. 42 months = 3 1/2 years A time (one year) and times (+ two years) and the dividing
of time, (+ half a year ) = three and a half years, or forty two months (12+24 + 6 = 42 months) And
then Revelation 12:6 confirms this when it says that the church of Jesus would hide in the wilderness
for exactly 1260 days. 42 months, or 3 and a half years equals 1260 days.
Still, some will say that 42 months does NOT equal 1260 days because all our months do not equal
30 days each. The fact here is, prophecy speaks of Biblical months. To understand the forty and two
months, or the time, and times and diving a time, that the beast will reign, we must first find the
method of time the Bible declares for prophecy. God says in Ezekiel 4:6 I have appointed thee each
day for a year And we also find the Bible acknowledges a month to be 30 days long. Because in,
Genesis 7:11 we see the rain started in Noah's day on the 17 day of the 2nd month and in Genesis
8:3,4 we find the water receded at the end of exactly 150 days, then it says the ark rested on the 17th
day of the 7th month. That's exactly 5 months to the day. If we divide the 150 days by the 5 months
you get 30 days per month. So 42 months multiplied by 30 equals 1260. And according to Ezekiel
4:6, that's 1260 years that Papal Rome would reign as a church/state power.
Vigilius...ascended the papal chair (538 A.D.) under the military protection of Belisarius. History of
the Christian Church, Vol. 3, p. 327.

Historical records reveal the papacy began its reign in 538 AD upon Emperor Justinian's decree, and
under the military protection of Belisarius. And the Bible says the beast will rule for EXACTLY
1260 years before receiving a mortal wound. Now it's just a matter of simple mathematics. It is also a
grand method by which to see the Lord glorified. If the prophecy is correct, 1260 years after 538 AD
the Beast must receive a mortal wound.
If you add 1260 years to the beginning year for the Roman Catholic church, 538 AD, you will arrive
in the year 1798 AD. So, according to the Bible we are told the first reign of the Beast will last till the
year 1798 . So, did it end in 1798, and how? First understand, according to the prophecy, we learn
that, He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed
with the sword... Revelation 13:10.
The prophecy is telling us that the beast would be destroyed with the sword (sword = military) at the
end of its reign of exactly 1260 years. Did this happen to Papal Rome in 1798...? YES IT DID! On
February 10th Napoleon Bonaparte in that EXACT year 1798 A.D. sent his General Louis Alexandre
Berthier, with his army into Rome, Italy. It is recorded... In 1798 General Berthier made his entrance
into Rome, abolished the papal government, and established a secular one. -Encyclopedia Britannica
1941
edition
That's Exactly 42 prophetic months, or 1260 years, or a time, and times, and dividing a time after the
Papacy began its powerful reign that the Pope shall go into captivity by the military! By the way, to
further illustrate this to be fact, shortly after his captivity the Pope did in fact die, in exile.

Pope Becomes Ruler Of A State Again:

Fact: Rome, June 7.--From 11 o' clock this morning there was another sovereign independent State in
the world. At that time Premier Mussolini, as Italian Foreign Minister representing King Victor
Emmanuel--the first Italian Premier ever to cross the threshold of the Vatican--exchanged with
Cardinal Gasparri, Papal Secretary of State, representing Pope Pius XI, ratifications of the treaties
signed at the Lateran Palace on Feb. 11. By that simple act the sovereign independent State of
Vatican City came into existence. -New York Times July 7, 1929

(H) The beast is one that was, is not and yet is. Revelation 17:8, ...behold the beast that was, and is
not, and yet is.

The Beast that was: The Roman church began in 538 AD and continued until Napoleon sent in General
Berthier in 1798 AD

...and is not: From 1798 AD until the signing of the Lateran treaty in 1929 the Roman Church/state
was
non-existent.
...yet is: From 1929 to present the Roman Church has been a church & state.
(I) The Beast will be a blasphemous beast: Revelation 13:1, And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and
saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns,
and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
Blasphemy defined: John 10:33, The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not;
but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. -AND- Mark 2:7, Why
doth this man thus speak blasphemies? who can forgive sins but God only?

(J) Three nations will be destroyed by the Beast: Daniel 7:8, I considered the horns, and, behold,
there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns
plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth
speaking great things.
Catholic emperors of the eastern empire found ways to help the pope by eliminating three of the
Arian tribes. The Catholic emperor Zeno (474-491) arranged a treaty with the Ostrogoths in 487
which resulted in the eradication of the kingdom of the Arian Heruls in 492. And the catholic
emperor Justinian (527-565) exterminated the Arian Vandals in 534 and signifcally broke the power
of the Arian Ostrogoths in 538. Thus were Daniel's three horns - The Heruls, the Vandals, and the
Ostrogoths - plucked up by the roots. -C. Mervyn Maxwell, God Cares Vol. 1, p. 129.

Vandals in 534

(K) The beast will understand and do as Satan requests. Daniel 8:23, And in the latter time of their
kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and
understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

The Sign of Papal Authority

Now who is the "beast?"
What power:
1) Received its "seat" and authority from Rome. Revelation 13:4.
2) Rules the world for 1260 years (from 538 A.D. - 1798 A.D.)
3) Then received a "deadly wound!' which later heals. Revelation 13:3.
4) Is both a political and a religious power, which is worshiped. Revelation 13:4.
5) Tampered with God's law. Daniel 7:25.
6) Has a leader who claims to be God on the earth and to be able to forgive sins. (which is blasphemy)
Revelation 13: 1.
7) Is a mother church (daughters have come out of her but now are retreating back to her). Revelation
17:5.
8) Made war with the saints. Revelation 13:7.
9) Is a world power which is wondered at. Revelation 13:3,4.
10) Has "a man" at the head of it with the number of his name being 666. Revelation 13:18.
11) Has a dreaded "mark" which, if received, will cause a person to be cast into the lake of fire and lose
eternal life. Revelation 14:9,10.

By now most of the people have guessed that it's the Papacy. They're correct. It's the only power on the
face of the earth that fits all of the Bible characteristics for it.
10. . So if the Sabbath is the seal/sign/mark of God, what then is the mark of this Beast?
Answer: Sunday worship is the Mark of the Beast!"

Look at this astonishing statement concerning her act of changing God's

Sabbath to Sunday
"Of course the Catholic Church claims that the change was her act., And the act (get this now)
is a mark of her ecclesiastical power and authority in religious matters."! Thomas, H.F.,
Chancellor of Cardinal Gibbons, In answer to a letter regarding the change of the-Sabbath.
Sunday is our MARK of authority . . . The church is above the Bible, and this transference of
Sabbath observance is proof of that fact. Catholic Record, September 1, 1923 ( Ontario).

Sunday worship is the mark of the Papacy's authority

11. What do Catholics say of Protestant Sunday keepers?
Answer: The observance of Sunday by the Protestants is an homage they pay, in spite of themselves, to
the authority of the [Catholic] church. Monsignor Louis Segur, Plain Talk About the Protestantism of Today
(1868), p. 213.
N0TE.A full realization of this fact will lead those who honestly, but ignorantly, have been observing
Sunday as the Sabbath, to refuse longer to pay homage to apostasy, and return to the observance of that
which is the sign of loyalty to heaventhe only weekly day of rest which God, in His word, has commanded
men to keep holy, the seventh day.

The Mark!
The issues are plain. God says that He is the true God. He has given His Sabbath as a sign of His
authority as the Creator of all. By keeping it, we recognize His authority. But the Catholic church
says in effect: "It's the mark of our authority to over-rule God's law."
"No! Keep the first day of the week, and lo, the entire civilized world bows in reverent obedience to
the command of the holy Catholic church." Father Enright C.S.S.R. of the Redemptoral College,
Kansas City, Mo., (In HISTORY OF THE SABBATH), p. 802.
12. What does it mean to receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand?
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their
right hand, or in their foreheads Revelation 13:16. And the third angel followed them, saying with
a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in
his hand Revelation 14:9.
Answer: The mark is not a visible mark that is stamped on the forehead or on the hand. Likewise the
seal of God is not a visible seal or mark. These verses tell us that both the seal of God and the mark
of the beast are received inside the forehead. Since the forehead represents the mind, the significance
of these marks being received inside the forehead is that a person must make a conscious choice as
to which mark he will receive. He must understand the meanings and the relationships of these
marks, both to God and to Satan and the beast. Thus, either mark received in the forehead will
indicate that a conscious choice had been made. The person who receives either mark in his forehead
understands both the penalty and the reward for receiving either one.
The mark of the beast is sometimes received in the right hand, symbolizing that the person does not
understand but goes along with society in obeying the laws which dictate Sunday observance. Even
though these people do not understand the importance of not receiving the mark of the beast, they

will still suffer the penalty, for God has given them plenty of opportunity to learn and understand the
necessity of obeying the Ten Commandments, including the Sabbath commandment.
The mark of the beast, Sunday observance, will come to prominence only when the United States
passes the national Sunday law. The controversy between those who have the mark of the beast and
want to keep Sunday and those who have the seal of God and want to observe the Sabbath will be the
final issue of contention before the end.
Sunday observance is the mark of the beast. Thus if you insist on keeping Gods Sabbath day holy,
you will be able neither to buy nor to sell. You will be completely cut off from any means of support
for yourself and your family. This religious persecution will be very bloody. Many of Gods true
people will lose their lives in this bloody turmoil, but this time the Lord will not tolerate a wholesale
slaughter of His people. He will come and put an end to Sunday-keeping and religious persecution
forever. And when He comes, those who have disregarded His law will finally learn that God means
exactly what He says.
13. But what about all of our loved ones who are keeping Sunday and don't know any better?
Do they have the Mark of the Beast now?
Answer: No! Only those who know better and realize that they are breaking God's fourth
commandment are held accountable. The Bible says, Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and
doeth it not, to him it is sin." James 4:17.
You and us know now and are held accountable. Soon all will know. God is making this very point a
great test for the world in the last days. It will separate those who really love God enough to obey
Him, even amid persecution, from those who merely claim to be Christians but like Pilate, will
compromise, go along with the crowd - and end up with the Mark of the Beast. The "Mark" won't
officially be received until it is enforced by the Two Horned Beast" of Revelation 13.
We certainly don't want to hurt our loving Saviour by willfully breaking any of His commandments.
He suffered agony on the cross to take away our sins. His heart was broken. His love for us is very
tender. Those who willfully receive the mark of the beast are willing to hurt the loving heart of God.
Sin hurts Him most of all. As we choose to keep all of His commandments, it makes Him glad.
As you begin to worship Him in a special way on His Sabbath, He will make it the happiest day of
the week for you. You'll be able to lay aside your cares and labors one whole day and have a
beautiful rest with Jesus - not only physically, but a rest of soul, a joyful peace and freedom from
guilt.
If your job calls you to work on Sabbath, He can help you with that too. We've never seen it fail.
Those who determine to keep His Sabbath holy and not work on Saturday, have God's special care
and miraculous providence.
He will either help you get the Sabbath off from work, or if you have to lose your job, He will give
you a better one! We know it for sure. That's God! That's our kind Heavenly Father.
Every person on the earth will be tested on this very point. Millions around the world have
discovered these amazing truths just like you have and are rejoicing in a closer walk with Jesus than
ever before.
Today God is calling us to receive His mark (or seal). As you look upon your crucified Saviour,
will you acknowledge His authority by obeying Him and keeping His Sabbath?

5. The Image Of The Beast

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

The leopard-like beast, the lamb-like beast, and the image of the beast are three powers described as
symbols in Revelation, chapter 13. The lesson we are about to study focuses on dramatic events in
the political and religious world.

The Lamb-Like Beast

1. Who represents the leopard-like beast?
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and
ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast
which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the
mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. Revelation
13:1-2.
NOTE: "In chapter 13 (verses 1-10) is described another beast, 'like unto a leopard,' to which the
dragon gave 'his power, and his seat, and great authority.' This symbol, as most Protestants have
believed, represents the papacy, which succeeded to the power and seat and authority once held by
the ancient Roman Empire. Of the leopard-like beast it is declared: 'There was given unto him a
mouth speaking great things and blasphemies. . . . And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against
God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was given
unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all
kindreds, and tongues, and nations.' This prophecy, which is nearly identical with the description of
the little horn of Daniel 7, unquestionably points to the papacy." The Great Controversy 1911 ed,
page 439.
2. As the first beast [Papacy] was being led away into captivity, what did John see?
And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he
spake as a dragon. Revelation 13:11.
At that time the prophet beheld a new power coming up, represented by the beast with lamb-like
horns. The appearance of this beast and the manner of its rise seem to indicate that the power which it
represents is unlike those brought to view under the preceding symbols. The great kingdoms that
have ruled the world obtained their dominion by conquest and revolution, and they were presented to
the prophet Daniel as beasts of prey, rising when the 'four winds of the heaven strove upon the great
sea.' [DAN. 7:2.] But the beast with horns like a lamb is seen 'coming up out of the earth;' [REV.
13:11.] signifying that instead of overthrowing other powers to establish itself, the nation thus
represented arose in territory previously unoccupied, and grew up gradually and peacefully. The
Great Controversy 1884 ed, page 277.
There are very clear identification marks associated with the second beast and by these we can be
sure as to who the power is:

It rises to power when the Papacy receives a deadly wound.

This power rises out of the earth, an area that is the opposite to the sea, from which the first
beast arises. [Sea or waters represent peoples and nations. When troubled, they represent
strife and warfare.]

It rises silently, like a plant growing out of the earth. This is the meaning of the Greek word
'anabaino' translated 'coming up'.
It is lamb-like. This means that it is youthful, innocent, harmless and gentle.
It has two symbols of power (horns) that are lamblike. Christ is represented as the Lamb of
God.
It ultimately possesses world-wide influence.
After the healing of the deadly wound, it enforces papal policy.
It promotes the formation of 'the image to the beast'.
It enforces obedience to 'the image to the beast.'
The form of enforcement is characterized by a particular mark, 'the mark of the beast'. The
only power that fulfills ([or will fulfill] these points is the United States of America.
(Condensed from Cooke, When Religious Persecution Returns, page 3.)

A Persecuting Power
3. Who could represent this image of the beast?
But the stern tracings of the prophetic pencil reveal a change in this peaceful scene. The beast with
lamb-like horns speaks with the voice of a dragon, and "exerciseth all the power of the first beast
before him." The spirit of persecution manifested by paganism and the papacy is again to be revealed.
Prophecy declares that this power will say "to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an
image to the beast." [REV. 13:14.] The image is made to the first or leopard-like beast, which is the
one brought to view in the third angel's message. By this first beast is represented the Roman Church,
an ecclesiastical body clothed with civil power, having authority to punish all dissenters. The image
to the beast represents another religious body clothed with similar power. The formation of this
image is the work of that beast whose peaceful rise and mild professions render it so striking a
symbol of the United States. Here is to be found an image of the papacy. The Great Controversy
1884 ed, page 277.
"When the churches of our land, [USA] uniting upon such points of faith as are held by them in
common, shall influence the state to enforce their decrees and sustain their institutions, then will
protestant America have formed an image of the Roman hierarchy. Then the true church will be
assailed by persecution, as were God's ancient people. Almost every century furnishes examples of
what bigotry and malice can do under a plea of serving God by protecting the rights of Church and
State. Protestant churches that have followed in the steps of Rome by forming alliance with worldly
powers have manifested a similar desire to restrict liberty of conscience. In the seventeenth century
thousands of non-conformist ministers suffered under the rule of the Church of England. Persecution
always follows religious favoritism on the part of secular governments." The Great Controversy 1884
ed, page 278.
Answer: We can see that the image would be a protestant religious ecclesiastical power united with
the civil power of the state to force obedience to the rules and commands of the church, just like
Catholicism.
"The image is made to the first or leopard-like beast, which is the one brought to view in the third
angel's message. By this first beast is represented the Roman church, an ecclesiastical body clothed
with civil power, having authority to punish all dissenters. The image to the beast represents another
religious body clothed with similar power." Ibid, page 278.
So when the protestant churches waive their differences in doctrinal beliefs and unite upon the same
common points of faith and shall call upon and influence the civil authorities to enforce their rules
and commands, then will the different churches of protestantism have formed themselves into an
image of the beast.

4. What must occur before any of the protestant churches can form themselves into an image of
the Catholic Church?
"It was apostasy that led the early church to seek the aid of the civil government, and this prepared
the way for the development of the papacy--the beast....So apostasy in the church will prepare the
way for the image to the beast." The Great Controversy 1911 ed, page 443-44.
The image to the beast represents another religious body clothed with similar power. The formation
of this image is the work of that beast whose peaceful rise and mild professions render it so striking a
symbol of the United States. Here is to be found an image of the papacy. The Great Controversy
1884 ed., page 277.
Answer: So before any of the protestant churches can form themselves into an image of the beast
they must first refuse to obey God's light and truths and choose apostasy and Satan's darkness
instead. And the greater the light they reject, the greater the apostasy and darkness that will occur.
And the greater the apostasy, the more closely will that church resemble Rome.
5. What are some of the names of the protestant churches?
Answer:
--Seventh-day Adventist
--Episcopal
--Presbyterian
--Lutheran
--Nazarene
--Methodist
--Pentecostal
--Baptist and etc.
6. Of all these different protestant churches which we named, have all of them rejected the light
of Heaven and God's truth to choose darkness and apostasy instead?
Answer: Yes.

Great Wonders
7. How does the second beast [Protestant America] resemble the first [Papacy or Roman
Catholic Church]?
And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which
dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. Revelation 13:12.

Here is a striking figure of the rise and growth of our own nation. And the lamb-like horns, emblems
of innocence and gentleness, well represent the character of our government, as expressed in its two
fundamental principles, Republicanism and Protestantism. The Christian exiles who first fled to
America, sought an asylum from royal oppression and priestly intolerance, and they determined to
establish a government upon the broad foundation of civil and religious liberty. These principles are
the secret of our power and prosperity as a nation. Millions from other lands have sought our shores,
and the United States has risen to a place among the most powerful nations of the earth.
"But the stern tracings of the prophetic pencil reveal a change in this peaceful scene. The beast with
lamb-like horns speaks with the voice of a dragon, and 'exerciseth all the power of the first beast
before him.' The spirit of persecution manifested by paganism and the papacy is again to be
revealed. The Great Controversy, 1884 ed., page 277.
8. What means will be used to induce people to worship the first beast [Papacy or Roman
Catholic Church]?
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight
of men. Revelation 13:13.
NOTE: "Some will be tempted to receive these wonders as from God. The sick will be healed before
us. Miracles will be performed in our sight. Are we prepared for the trial which awaits us when the
lying wonders of Satan shall be more fully exhibited? Will not many be ensnared and taken? By
departing from the plain precepts and commandments of God and giving heed to fables, the minds of
many are preparing to receive these lying wonders. We must all now seek to arm ourselves for the
contest in which we must soon engage. Faith in God's word, prayerfully studied and practically
applied, will be our shield from Satan's power and will bring us off conquerors through the blood of
Christ." Marantha, page 208.
9. What is the purpose of these wonders and miracles?
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to
do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to
the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Even him, whose coming is after the
working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, And with all deceivableness of
unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might
be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.
And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth
of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. Revelation 13:14. Compare 2 Thessalonians
2:9-11 & Revelation 16:13-14.
NOTE: "Among the most successful agencies of the great deceiver are the delusive teachings and
lying wonders of spiritualism. Disguised as an angel of light, he spreads his nets where least
suspected. If men would but study the Book of God with earnest prayer that they might understand it,
they would not be left in darkness to receive false doctrines. But as they reject the truth they fall a
prey to deception Many endeavour to account for spiritual manifestations by attributing them
wholly to fraud and sleight of hand on the part of the medium. But while it is true that the results of
trickery have often been palmed off as genuine manifestations, there have been, also, marked
exhibitions of supernatural power But none need be deceived by the lying claims of spiritualism.
God has given the world sufficient light to enable them to discover the snare. As already shown, the
theory which forms the very foundation of spiritualism is at war with the plainest statements of
Scripture. The Bible declares that the dead know not anything, that their thoughts have perished; they
have no part in anything that is done under the sun; they know nothing of the joys or sorrows of those
who were dearest to them on earth." The Great Controversy, 1911 ed., pages 524, 553 & 556.
Receiving The Mark

10. How will the worship of the beast and its image be enforced?
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their
right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the
name of the beast, or the number of his name. Revelation 13:16-17.
NOTE: The beast with lamb-like horns commands "all, both small and great, rich and poor, free
and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads; and that no man might buy or
sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." [REV. 13:16,
17.] This is the mark concerning which the third angel utters his warning. It is the mark of the first
beast, or the papacy, and is therefore to be sought among the distinguishing characteristics of that
power. The prophet Daniel declared that the Roman Church, symbolized by the little horn, was to
think to change times and laws, [DAN. 7:25.] while Paul styled it the man of sin, [2 THESS. 2:3, 4.]
who was to exalt himself above God. Only by changing God's law could the papacy exalt itself above
God; whoever should understandingly keep the law as thus changed would be giving supreme honor
to that power by which the change was made. Such an act of obedience to papal laws would be a
mark of allegiance to the pope in the place of God.
The papacy has attempted to change the law of God. The second commandment, forbidding image
worship, has been dropped from the law, and the fourth commandment has been so changed as to
authorize the observance of the first instead of the seventh day as the Sabbath. But papists urge as a
reason for omitting the second commandment, that it is unnecessary, being included in the first, and
that they are giving the law exactly as God designed it to be understood. This cannot be the change
foretold by the prophet. An intentional, deliberate change is brought to view: "He shall think to
change times and laws." The change in the fourth commandment exactly fulfills the prophecy. For
this change the only authority claimed is that of the church. Here the papal power openly sets itself
above God. The Great Controversy 1884 ed, page 279
11. What threat will hang over those who refuse to conform to these laws?
And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both
speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
Revelation 13:15.
Answer: Death decree.
Satan Impersonates Christ

12. What is the crowning act of this image beast power?

As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will attempt to personate Christ.
The church has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes.
Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan
will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the
description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation. [REV. 1:13-15.] The glory that
surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph
rings out upon the air, 'Christ has come! Christ has come!' The people prostrate themselves in
adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands, and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ
blessed his disciples when he was personally upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of
melody. In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which

the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ,
he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has
blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name
by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost
overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes,
from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying, This is the great power of God."
The Great Controversy, 1884 ed., pages 442-3.
13. What is Satan not permitted to counterfeit?
Answer: Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ advent.
But the people of God will not be misled. The teachings of this false christ are not in accordance
with the Scriptures. His blessing is pronounced upon the worshipers of the beast and his image,--the
very class upon whom the Bible declares that God's unmingled wrath shall be poured out. And,
furthermore, Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ's advent. The Scriptures teach
that "as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming
of the Son of man be;" [MATT. 24:27.] that he "cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him;"
[REV. 1:7.] that he will "descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and
with the trump of God;" [1 THESS. 4:16.] that he will "come in his glory, and all the holy angels
with him," [MATT. 25:31.] and will "send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall
gather together his elect." [MATT. 24:31.] Those who have received the love of the truth will be
shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the testimony of the Scriptures
they will detect the deceiver in his disguise. The Great Controversy 1884 ed, page 443.

The Law And The Testimony

14. Who only will not be deceived?
For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders;
insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:24.
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the
love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion,
that they should believe a lie. 2 Thessalonians 2:10, 11.
To all, the testing time will come. By the sifting of temptation, the genuine Christian will be
revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly established upon his word that they would not yield to
the evidence of their senses? Would they, in such a crisis, cling to the Bible, and the Bible only?
Satan will, if possible, prevent them from obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so
arrange affairs as to hedge up their way, entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a
heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts may be overcharged with the cares of this life, and the day
of trial may come upon them as a thief. The Great Controversy, 1884 ed., page 443.
15. What two texts should keep us from falling into these deceptions?
To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no
light in them. Isaiah 8:20.
And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
John 14:29.
Is it your heart desire to follow God regardless of any and all human pressure to follow another
master?

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

At every revival of God's work, the prince of evil is aroused to more intense activity; he is now putting forth
his utmost efforts for a final, despairing struggle against Christ and his followers. The last great delusion is
soon to open before us. Antichrist is to perform is marvelous works in our sight. So closely will the
counterfeit resemble the true, that it will be impossible to distinguish between them except by the Holy
Scriptures. By their testimony every statement and every miracle must be tested. The Great Controversy,
1884 ed, page 411.

To identify the Antichrist, let's study Daniel, chapter 7.

Spirit Of Antichrist

1. Which Bible writer uses the term 'antichrist'?

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there
many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. . . Who is a liar but he that denieth that
Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. And every spirit that
confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist,
whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. For many
deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a
deceiver and an antichrist. 1 John 2:18, 22, 1 John 4:3, 2 John 1:7.
NOTE: The word 'antichrist' is used in the Bible, only by the apostle John, and in just three passages.
'Christ' is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word 'Messiah,' the anointed one. 'Anti-' is a Greek
prefix, meaning 'in place of'. An antichrist is one who claims to take Christ's place. Thus when Pope
Leo XIII in one of his encyclical letters wrote: 'We hold upon this earth the place of God Almighty,'
he was claiming to be Antichrist.
2. Does the Bible teach that the antichrist is to be a single person, or can there be more than one
antichrist?
Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are
there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. 1 John 2:18.
Answer: Yes, there have been many antichrists down through history who have worked against the
kingdom of God. However, there is only one entity that specifically fulfills all the prophesied
characteristics of the Antichrist. In Daniel chapters 7 and 8 and in Revelation chapter 13, you will
find at least 10 identifying traits of the Antichrist. These 10 identifying marks can be fulfilled in only
one entity, the papacy.
NOTE: Because of the teachings of John Nelson Darby, founder of the Exclusive Brethren, and the
popularity of the 'Left Behind' series of novels, many Christians have been led to believe that the
Antichrist will be a single individual, who will appear after the Secret Rapture, and will eventually
become the great persecutor of the post-Rapture believers, imposing the Mark of the Beast. It is clear
from John's writings that he did not see the word 'antichrist' as applying to just one person at the end
of time.

Man Of Sin
3. How does Paul identify the antichrist?
Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away
first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition. 2 Thessalonians 2:3.
NOTE: The Scriptures foretell a great apostasy, which even in the days of the apostles had begun to
manifest itself among certain false brethren in the church, and which finally was to develop into a
falling away, and the revelation of that Man of Sin, the Son of Perdition, of whom Paul wrote to
the Thessalonians (2 Thessalonians 2:1-7). In fulfillment of these predictions, it is a matter of
historical record that following the death of the last of the apostles of Jesus, some members of the
Christian Church began to depart from the simplicity of the truth as taught by Christ; and gradually
these church members were led to unite with the world in heathen practices. As the years passed by,
and the Church increased in numbers and in popularity, there were many who became less and still
less strict in their obedience to Bible teaching, until finally, in the fifth and sixth centuries after
Christ, the greater number of those who claimed to be Christians were in reality not living in
harmony with the teachings of Christ. For many centuries thereafter an apostate form of Christianity
held sway. The truth was suppressed and lost sight of, and ignorance prevailed. These centuries of
apostasy are correctly designated in history the Dark Ages. During this time attempts were made to
alter or to set aside many of the fundamental teachings of the Bible.
4. What did Paul reveal about the career of the Antichrist?
Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as
God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God. And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and
laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. And he
opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them
that dwell in heaven. 2 Thessalonians 2:4. Daniel 7:25 & Revelation 13:6.
NOTE: The man of sin was to arise, and do his work of exaltation and blasphemy, before the
brethren could look for the coming of Christ. That great event was to be preceded by a falling away.
There would be revealed a form of Antichrist, and the leaven of apostasy was to work with increasing
power to the end of time.
5. What two definitions of blasphemy are given in the Bible?
And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith
said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain
of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. The Jews answered him, saying, For a
good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself
God. Matthew 9:2-3, John 10:33.
NOTE: The Jews were quite correct in supposing that for a mere man to claim to forgive sins is
blasphemous. It is likewise blasphemous for a mere man to claim to be God. But Christ was no mere
man, but, as the prophecy of Isaiah 9:6 reveals, 'the mighty God.' It has, however, been a feature of
the Roman Catholic religion that its priests have the right to forgive men's sins. It is also the official
teaching of the Roman Catholic Church that the pope is God, as the following quotations reveal:
The Catholic Encyclopaedia Volume 6 page 48 describes the pope as: 'not a mere man, but as it were
God and the vicar of God.' Pope Leo XIII in one of his encyclical letters wrote: 'We hold upon this
earth the place of God Almighty.' Pope Innocent III wrote: 'The pope is not simply a man but rather

God on earth.' He also wrote: 'The pope is not only the representative of Jesus Christ but he is Jesus
Christ Himself hidden under the veil of flesh.'
6. When did Paul prophesy that the Man of Sin would be revealed?
For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out
of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of
his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming. 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8.
After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong
exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue
with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. I
considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there
were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes
of man, and a mouth speaking great things. . . Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth
kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and
shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that
shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall
subdue three kings. Daniel 7:7-8, 23-24.
NOTE: Paul speaks of a power restraining the Man of Sin from manifesting himself in his true
colors. So long as the Roman emperors held sway, the papacy was unable to assume supreme power.
Though the seeds of the great apostasy were already beginning to grow, even in Paul's day, the
persecutions by the Roman emperors tended to inhibit the tendency of some Christian churches to
conform to worldly and pagan customs, practices and beliefs. But once the last Roman emperor had
abdicated and three powers hostile to the papacy (see Daniel 7:8, 24) had been defeated, the popes
were able to assume supreme power.
Previous to the rise of the papacy, all opposition to the law of God had been in the form of
paganism, God had been openly defied; but from that time the opposition was carried on under the
guise of professed allegiance to Him. The papacy, however, was no less the instrument of Satan than
was pagan Rome; for all the power, the seat, and the great authority of the papacy, were given it by
the dragon [Revelation 13:2]. And so, although the pope professed to be the vicegerent of Christ, he
is, in reality, the vicegerent of Satan, he is antichrist. Great Controversy, 1888 edition, page 680.
7. What would be the effect on the Church of the revelation of the Man of Sin?
And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given
him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. Revelation 13:7.
I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them. Daniel 7:21.
[REV. 13:2.] And now began the 1260 years of papal oppression foretold in the
prophecies of Daniel and John. [DAN. 7:25; REV. 13:5-7.] Christians were forced to choose, either
to yield their integrity and accept the papal ceremonies and worship, or to wear away their lives in
dungeon cells, or suffer death by the rack, the fagot, or the headsman's ax. Now were fulfilled the
words of Jesus, Ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and
some of you shall they cause to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.
[LUKE 21:16, 17.] Persecution opened upon the faithful with greater fury than ever before, and the
world became a vast battle-field. For hundreds of years the church of Christ found refuge in seclusion
and obscurity. Thus says the prophet: The woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place
prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and three-score days. [REV.
12:16.] The Great Controversy 1884 ed, page 57.

The 1260-Years Of Papal Supremacy

8. How long was the Antichrist to oppress the people of God?
And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most
High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times
and the dividing of time. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared
of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. . . And when the
dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man
child. And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the
wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face
of the serpent. And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and
power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. And he opened his mouth in blasphemy
against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. And it was
given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over
all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. Daniel 7:25. Revelation 12:6, 13-14, Revelation 13:5-7.
NOTE: The forty and two months are the same as the time and times and the dividing of time, three
years and a half, or 1260 days, of Daniel 7, the time during which the papal power was to oppress
God's people. This period, as stated in preceding chapters, began with the supremacy of the papacy,
A.D. 538, and terminated in 1798. The Great Controversy, 1888 ed, page 439.
9. What happened to bring this period of supremacy to an end? Revelation 13:3, first part.
Revelation 13:10.
And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed. . . He
that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with
the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. Revelation 13:3, first part. Revelation
13:10.
NOTE: 'The 1260 years of papal supremacy began in A.D. 538, and would therefore terminate in
1798. At that time a French army entered Rome and made the pope a prisoner, and he died in exile.
Though a new pope was soon afterward elected, the papal hierarchy has never since been able to
wield the power which it before possessed. The persecution of the church did not continue
throughout the entire period of the 1260 years. God in mercy to His people cut short the time of their
fiery trial. In foretelling the great tribulation to befall the church, the Saviour said: Except those days
should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be
shortened. Matthew 24:22. Through the influence of the Reformation the persecution was brought to
an end prior to 1798.' Great Controversy, 1888 ed, page 266.

All The World Wondered After The Beast

10. How did John prophesy the revival of papal power and influence?
And all the world wondered after the beast. Revelation 13:3, last part.
NOTE: The influence of Rome in the countries that once acknowledged her dominion is still far
from being destroyed. And prophecy foretells a restoration of her power. 'I saw one of his heads as it
were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the
beast.' Verse 3. The infliction of the deadly wound points to the downfall of the papacy in 1798. After
this, says the prophet, 'his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.' Paul
states plainly that the 'man of sin' will continue until the Second Advent. (2 Thessalonians 2:3-8). To
the very close of time he will carry forward the work of deception. And the Revelator declares, also
referring to the papacy: 'All that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written
in the book of life.' (Revelation 13:8.) In both the Old and the New World, the papacy will receive

homage in the honour paid to the Sunday institution, that rests solely upon the authority of the
Roman Church. Great Controversy, 1888 ed, page 578.
11. How does John picture the final downfall of the papacy?
And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her
desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. For God hath put in their hearts to
fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be
fulfilled. And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the
earth. Revelation 17:16-18.
And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with
violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. Revelation
18:21.
NOTE: Church members who have seen the light and been convicted, but who have trusted the
salvation of their souls to the minister, will learn in the day of God that no other soul can pay the
ransom for their transgression. A terrible cry will be raised, 'I am lost, eternally lost.' Men will feel as
though they could rend in pieces the ministers who have preached falsehoods and condemned the
truth. All unite in heaping their bitterest condemnation upon the ministers. Unfaithful pastors have
prophesied smooth things; they have led their hearers to make void the law of God and to persecute
those who would keep it holy. Now, in their despair, these teachers confess before the world their
work of deception. The multitudes are filled with fury. 'We are lost!' they cry, 'and you are the cause
of our ruin'; and they turn upon the false shepherds. The very ones that once admired them most will
pronounce the most dreadful curses upon them. The very hands that once crowned them with laurels
will be raised for their destruction. The swords which were to slay God's people are now employed to
destroy their enemies. The Great Controversy, pages 655, 656.
The Antichrist

12. What seven distinguishing marks does Daniel reveal about the antichrist?
And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them;
and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. And he shall speak great words
against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and
laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. Daniel
7:24-25.
NOTE: In Daniel 7, the career of the antichrist is explained in detail. The empire of Rome is divided
into ten kingdoms which arise out of it. Then after this division takes place, another power emerges,
at first much smaller and weaker than the ten kingdoms. In order for this power to arise, three of the
ten kingdoms have to be uprooted. This power was to be a totally different kind of power from the
ten kingdoms. It would blaspheme against God. It would take the lead in persecuting Christians. It
would claim the power to change God's sacred times and laws. And Christians would be persecuted
by this power for a period of 'a time, times and the dividing of time. Here we have seven identifying
features:

It would rise after the Roman Empire had split up into ten smaller kingdoms. (Daniel 7:8).
Three of these kingdoms would be overthrown in its rise to power. (Daniel 7:8).
It would be a different kind of power (diverse) from the others that came before it. (Daniel
7:24).
It would blaspheme against God. (Daniel 7:25). See also Revelation 13:5.
It would persecute God's people. (Daniel 7:21, 25).
It would claim the right to change God's law and times. (Daniel 7:25).
Its period of power would be 'a time, times, and the dividing of time.' (Daniel 7:25).

13. Which is the only power that has fulfilled all of these identifying features?
Answer:
A. The pope assumed the title of the Caesars, Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff) in 538, nearly
sixty years after the last Roman emperor abdicated and his empire was divided.
B. In these sixty years, three kingdoms, the Heruli, the Ostrogoths and the Vandals, all of which
opposed the papacy, were overthrown and disappeared from history.
C. The papacy, as a total union of church and state, and claiming authority over all earthly kings,
exercises a different kind of power from those kingdoms that preceded it.
D. The Bible defines blasphemy in two ways, claiming to be God and claiming the right to forgive
sins. The popes have made both those claims.
E. History reveals the papacy as the greatest persecutor of Christians, both in terms of time and
numbers. A comparison of the Ten Commandments as found in Exodus 20 and in standard Roman
Catholic catechisms will show that one commandment has been omitted and five others have been
heavily edited.
F. The period of time that the papacy would flourish was 'a time, times, and the dividing of time.'
Elsewhere this period is referred to as 1260 days and 42 months. The principle of prophetic
interpretation that a prophetic day is equivalent to a literal year makes this period 1260 years. The
papacy assumed the role of the Caesars in 538. 1260 years later in 1798, Napoleon sent General
Berthier to Rome to arrest the pope, thus planning to bring an end to the papacy.

The Antichrist And The Protestant Reformation

14. What did the major Protestant Reformers teach about the Antichrist?
Answer: Many Protestant reformers lost their lives because they recognized that the Roman Catholic
church- whose head is the successive Popes was the antichrist of Bible prophecy.
Martin Luther (1483-1546) [founder of the Lutheran Church] nothing else than the kingdom of
Babylon and of very Antichrist. For who is the man of sin and the son of perdition, but he who by
his teaching and his ordinances increases the sin and perdition of souls in the church; while he yet sits
in the church as if he were God? All these conditions have now for many ages been fulfilled by the
papal tyranny. Martin Luther, First Principles, pp. 196-197
John Calvin (1509-1564) [founder of the Presbyterian Church] I deny him to be the vicar of Christ,
who, in furiously persecuting the gospel, demonstrates by his conduct that he is Antichrist--I deny
him to be the successor of Peter..I deny him to be the head of the church. Some persons think us
too severe and censorious when we call the Roman pontiff Antichrist. But those who are of this
opinion do not consider that they bring the same charge of presumption against Paul himself, after
whom we speak and whose language we adoptI shall briefly show that (Pauls words in 2
Thessalonians 2) are not capable of any other interpretation than that which applies them to the
Papacy John Calvin, Tracts, Vol. 1, pp. 219,220. John Calvin, Institutes.
John Wesley (1703-1791) [founder of the Methodist Church] He is in an emphatical sense, the Man
of Sin, as he increases all manner of sin above measure. And he is, too, properly styled the Son of
Perdition, as he has caused the death of numberless multitudes, both of his opposers and followers
He it isthat exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped claiming the
highest power, and highest honor claiming the prerogatives which belong to God alone. Albert
Close, Antichrist and His Ten Kingdoms, London: Thynne and Co., 1917, p. 110.

John Wyclif (1324-1384) [Completed the 1st English translation of the Bible] Why is it necessary
in unbelief to look for another Antichrist? Hence in the seventh chapter of Daniel Antichrist is
forcefully described by a horn arising in the time of the 4th kingdom. For it grew from [among] our
powerful ones, more horrible, more cruel, and more greedy, because by reckoning the pagans and our
Christians by name, a lesser [greater?] struggle for the temporals is not recorded in any preceding
time... and the horn has arisen from the ten horns, having eyes and a mouth speaking great things
against the Lofty One, and wearing out the saints of the Most High, and thinking that he is able to
change times and laws. (Daniel 7:8, 25 quoted) For so our clergy foresee the lord pope, as it is
said of the eighth blaspheming little head. Translated from Wyclif's, De Veritate Sacrae Scripturae,
vol. 3 pp. 262, 263
William Tyndale (1484-1536) [1st translator of the Bible from the Greek] The pope's forbidding
matrimony, and to eat of meats created of God for man's use, which is devilish doctrine by Paul's
prophecy, are tokens good enough that he is the right antichrist, and his doctrine sprung of the
devil. 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Tyndale, An Answer to Sir Thomas More's Dialogue, in Works, vol. 3, p.
171 Visit http://www.williamtyndale.com for more information on William Tyndale.
King James (1566-1625) [Authorized the King James Version of the Bible] The faithfull praiseth
God for the Popes destruction, and their deliverance, and for the plagues which are to light on him
and his followers. The Pope by his Pardons makes merchandise of the souls of men: Heaven and the
Saints rejoice at his destruction, albeit the earth and the worldlings lament for the same James I,
Paraphrase, in Workes, pp. 47, 57
John Knox (1505-1572) [Scottish Reformer] He preached that Romish traditions and ceremonies
should be abolished along with that tyranny which the Pope himself has for so many ages exercised
over the church and that he should be acknowledged as the son of perdition, of whom Paul speaks. In
a public challenge he declared: As for your Roman Church, as it is now corrupted I no more doubt
but that it is the synagogue of Satan, and the head therof, called the Pope, to be the man of sin of
whom the apostle speaketh. Knox, The Zurich Letters, p.199
Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) [Associate of Martin Luther] Since it is certain that the pontiffs
and the monks have forbidden marriage, it is most manifest, and true without any doubt, that the
Roman Pontiff, with his whole order and kingdom, is very Antichrist. Likewise in 2 Thess. II, Paul
clearly says that the man of sin will rule in the church exalting himself above the worship of God, etc.
Translated from Melanchthon, Disputationes, No. 56, De Matrimonio, in Opera (Corpus
Reformatorum), vol. 12 col. 535
Huldreich Zwingli (1484-1531) [great Swiss reformer quoted on Dec. 28, 1524] I know that in it
works the might and power of the Devil, that is, of the Antichrist the Papacy has to be abolished
But by no other means can it be more thoroughly routed than by the word of God (2 Thessalonians
2), because as soon as the world receives this in the right way, it will turn away from the Pope
without compulsion. Principle Works of Zwingli, Vol. 7, p. 135.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of
Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. Revelation 17:6.
15. What divine judgment, however, is pronounced upon the little horn?
The judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the
end. Daniel 7:26.
16. To whom will his dominion be given?
The kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be
given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all
dominions shall serve and obey Him. Verse 27.

Are you thankful to God for exposing the antichrist to you? Do you want to decide to follow
Jesus Christ wherever He leads and no longer be part of antichrist false religion?

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

When Lucifer rebelled against God, he was followed by a host of the angels of heaven. The
record declares that both he and his angels were cast out of heaven. They are now confined to this
earth. For God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into
chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment 2 Peter 2:4. These fallen angels are still in league
with Satan, and their chief work consists in an effort to deceive the human family and turn men away
from God.
Known as spirits of devils, these evil angels have, throughout the ages, carried on their
deceptive and nefarious work. According to the writings of the ancient prophets, however, this work
will be greatly intensified as the world draws near to its latter days. The Apostle Paul warns: Now
the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils 1Timothy 4:1.
The devil and his angels can work miracles. They can appear to men in a materialized form.
They can influence human beings, and can practice deception upon them. So powerful, in fact, will
the deceptions of Satan become in the last days that Gods people are earnestly warned lest they too,
be overcome by them.
Bible prophecies have been and are now being fulfilled before our eyes. During the past
century a new form of religion has swept over the various countries of the world like a prairie fire. It
is known as spiritualism. At first it was placed under the ban of all the Christian churches. Its sances
were secret and mysterious, and Christians feared and shunned them. But today the exponents of
spiritualism are found everywhere, even in the Christian churches; and the cult numbers its adherents
by the millions! In view of this, it surely is most fitting that we inquire, What is spiritualism? Is it
true or false? Is it of God or Satan?
Spiritualism

1. What is Spiritualism defined to be?

A belief in the frequent communication of intelligence from the world of spirits, by means of
physical phenomena, commonly manifested through a person of special susceptibility, called a
medium. Webster Dictionary.
2. Did this doctrine exist in ancient times?
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the
Lord your God. Leviticus 19:31.
NOTE: The familiar spirits were not the spirits of the dead, but evil angels, the messengers of
Satan. Ancient idolatry, which, as we have seen, comprises both worship of the dead and pretended
communion with them, is declared by the Bible to have been demon worship. Patriarchs and
Prophets, page 685.

3. How does God regard sorcerers?

And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers. Malachi
3:5.
4. What does He call the sorcerers?
Therefore hearken not ye to... your enchanters, nor to your sorcerers. . for they prophesy a lie unto
you to remove you far from your land. Jeremiah 27:9, 10.
Answer: Liars.
5. What was the ancient law concerning witches, and those who had familiar spirits?
A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death.
Leviticus. 20:27.
There shall not be found among you any that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an
enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer [hypnotist], or a consulter with familiar spirits [spirit medium], or
a wizard, or a necromancer [one who claims to talk to the dead]. For all that do these things are an
abomination unto the LORD. Deuteronomy 18:10-12. (See also Exodus 22:18).
Answer: God told His people not to have anything to do with any of these people who claim to have
supernatural powers and work magic. God doesnt change, He no more approves of this sort of thing
today, than He did then. Why, because He wants to keep something good from us? No, it is because
He knows it is all a pack of lies that Satan will use to enslave and destroy us, He wants us to have the
good, all the good and not the cruel evil.

Rejects Christian Fundamentals

6. With what is witchcraft classed by Paul?
Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies... I have also told
you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:20,
21.
7. What should one do if asked to inquire of a familiar spirit?
And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that
peep and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? Isaiah 8:19.
Answer: God is saying here that when people tell you to seek wizards and witches, claiming to talk
to the dead, that you are to refuse and instead seek God. Why should the living seek help from the
dead anyway when the Bible tells us, The dead know not anything?
Test Every Spirits

8. Is it possible to test every spirit?

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God. 1 John 4:1.
9. By what are we to try them?
To the law and to the testimony; if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no
light in them. Isaiah 8:20.
Answer: By the Ten Commandments and the rest of the scriptures.
The Spirit was not given--nor can it ever be bestowed--to supersede the Bible; for the Scriptures
explicitly state that the word of God is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be
tested. Says the apostle John, 'Believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God:
because many false prophets are gone out into the world.' 1 John 4:1. And Isaiah declares, 'To the law
and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.'
Isaiah 8:20. The Great Controversy, page vii.3
10. Should we have any confidence in signs or wonders presented by those who would try to
lead us away from God?
And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other
gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that
prophet, or that dreamer of dreams; for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the
Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 13:2, 3.
11. What course should one pursue under these circumstances?
Ye shall walk after the Lord your God, and fear Him, and keep His commandments, and obey His
voice, and ye shall serve Him, and cleave unto Him. Deuteronomy 13:4.
12. We are directed to the law and to the testimony, by which to try these spirits that assert to
be voices from the dead. After one dies, how much does he know of what is going on among
men?
Thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away. His sons come to honor, and he knoweth it
not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them. Job 14:20, 21.
The Dead Know Not Anything

13. Does the dead know anything, or have any memory?

For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a
reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Ecclesiastes 9:5.
14. What does the wise man add, that forever rule out the idea that the dead come back to earth
to communicate with the living?
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a
portion forever in anything that is done under the sun. Ecclesiastes 9:6.

15. Then when miracles are performed by spirits assuming to be those of our dead friends, to
what may we attribute them?
For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of
the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Revelation 16:14.
NOTE: But none need be deceived by the lying claims of spiritualism. God has given the world
sufficient light to enable them to discover the snare. As already shown, the theory which forms the
very foundation of spiritualism is at war with the plainest statements of Scripture. The Bible declares
that the dead know not anything, that their thoughts have perished; they have no part in anything that
is done under the sun; they know nothing of the joys or sorrows of those who were dearest to them on
earth.
Furthermore, God has expressly forbidden all pretended communication with departed spirits. In the
days of the Hebrews there was a class of people who claimed, as do the spiritualists of today, to hold
communication with the dead. But the familiar spirits, as these visitants from other worlds were
called, are declared by the Bible to be the spirits of devils. (Compare Numbers 25:1-3; Psalm 106:28;
I Corinthians 10:20; Revelation 16:14.) The work of dealing with familiar spirits was pronounced an
abomination to the Lord, and was solemnly forbidden under penalty of death. Leviticus 19:31; 20:27.
The very name of witchcraft is now held in contempt. The claim that men can hold intercourse with
evil spirits is regarded as a fable of the Dark Ages. But spiritualism, which numbers its converts by
hundreds of thousands, yea, by millions, which has made its way into scientific circles, which has
invaded churches, and has found favor in legislative bodies, and even in the courts of kings-- this
mammoth deception is but a revival, in a new disguise, of the witchcraft condemned and prohibited
of old. The Great Controversy, pages 556-557.
16. What will be characteristic of last day apostasies from the faith?
Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving
heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1.
NOTE: Modern spiritualism, resting upon the same foundation, is but a revival in a new form of the
witchcraft and demon worship that God condemned and prohibited of old. It is foretold in the
Scriptures, which declare that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to
seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1. Paul, in his second letter to the
Thessalonians, points to the special working of Satan in spiritualism as an event to take place
immediately before the second advent of Christ. Speaking of Christ's second coming, he declares that
it is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:9. And
Peter, describing the dangers to which the church was to be exposed in the last days, says that as
there were false prophets who led Israel into sin, so there will be false teachers, who privily shall
bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them. . . . And many shall follow their
pernicious ways. 2 Peter 2:1, 2. Here the apostle has pointed out one of the marked characteristics of
spiritualist teachers. Patriarchs and Prophets, page 686.

In League With Satan

17. How will Satan deceive the people?
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14.
NOTE: In the future, Satans superstitions will assume new forms. Errors will be presented in a
pleasing and flattering manner. False theories, clothed with garments of light, will be presented to
Gods people. Thus Satan will try to deceive, if possible, the very elect.

18. What role will his agents assume before the end?
Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness. 2
Corinthians 11:15.
NOTE: As spiritualism more closely imitates the nominal Christianity of the day, it has greater
power to deceive and ensnare. Satan himself is converted, after the modern order of things. He will
appear in the character of an angel of light. Through the agency of spiritualism, miracles will be
wrought, the sick will be healed, and many undeniable wonders will be performed. And as the spirits
will profess faith in the Bible, and manifest respect for the institutions of the church, their work will
be accepted as a manifestation of divine power. The Great Controversy, page 588.
19. Are miracles always evidence of the power of God?
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight
of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had
power to do in the sight of the beast Revelation 13:1314.
Answer: No.
NOTE: Christ said, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in My name, saying, I
am Christ; and shall deceive many. Many false messiahs will appear, claiming to work miracles, and
declaring that the time of the deliverance of the Jewish nation has come. These will mislead many.
Christs words were fulfilled. Between His death and the siege of Jerusalem many false messiahs
appeared. But this warning was given also to those who live in this age of the world. The same
deceptions practiced prior to the destruction of Jerusalem have been practiced through the ages, and
will be practiced again. Desire of Ages, 628.
20. Will Satan try to counterfeit the coming of Christ, by signs and wonders?
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise
false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were
possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:23, 24.
Answer: Yes.
NOTE: Fearful sights of a supernatural character will soon be revealed in the heavens, in token of
the power of miracle-working demons. The spirits of devils will go forth to the kings of the earth and
to the whole world, to fasten them in deception, and urge them on to unite with Satan in his last
struggle against the government of heaven. By these agencies, rulers and subjects will be alike
deceived. Persons will arise pretending to be Christ Himself, and claiming the title and worship
which belong to the world's Redeemer. They will perform wonderful miracles of healing and will
profess to have revelations from heaven contradicting the testimony of the Scriptures. Great
Controversy page 624.
21. After these signs and wonders are shown, what is immediately to take place?
The Lord shall consume with the spirit of His mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of His
coming; even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying
wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish. 2 Thessalonians. 2:8-10.
Answer: The second coming of Christ.
NOTE: As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ.

Revelation 1:13-15. The glory that
surrounds him is unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph
rings out upon the air: 'Christ has come! Christ has come!' The people prostrate themselves in
adoration before him, while he lifts up his hands and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ
blessed His disciples when He was upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody.
In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the
Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he
claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has
blessed. He declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name
by refusing to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost
overmastering delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes,
from the least to the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying: This is 'the great power of God.'
Acts 8:10.
But the people of God will not be misled. The teachings of this false christ are not in accordance with
the Scriptures. His blessing is pronounced upon the worshipers of the beast and his image, the very
class upon whom the Bible declares that God's unmingled wrath shall be poured out.
And, furthermore, Satan is not permitted to counterfeit the manner of Christ's advent. The
Saviour has warned His people against deception upon this point, and has clearly foretold the manner
of His second coming. 'There shall arise false christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs
and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. . . . Wherefore if
they shall say unto you, Behold, He is in the desert; go not forth; behold, He is in the secret
chambers; believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west;
so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.' Matthew 24:24-27, 31; 25:31; Revelation 1:7; 1
Thessalonians 4:16, 17. This coming there is no possibility of counterfeiting. It will be universally
known--witnessed by the whole world.
Only those who have been diligent students of the Scriptures and who have received the love
of the truth will be shielded from the powerful delusion that takes the world captive. By the Bible
testimony these will detect the deceiver in his disguise. To all the testing time will come. By the
sifting of temptation the genuine Christian will be revealed. Are the people of God now so firmly
established upon His word that they would not yield to the evidence of their senses? Would they, in
such a crisis, cling to the Bible and the Bible only? Satan will, if possible, prevent them from
obtaining a preparation to stand in that day. He will so arrange affairs as to hedge up their way,
entangle them with earthly treasures, cause them to carry a heavy, wearisome burden, that their hearts
may be overcharged with the cares of this life and the day of trial may come upon them as a thief.
Great Controversy, pages 624-625.
22. What will those say then, who have maintained their love for the truth?
And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God, we have waited for Him, and He will save us: this
is the Lord; we have waited for Him, we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation. Isaiah 25:9.
To be forewarned is to be forearmed; will you now make Gods word the standard of your life?

8. The Three Angels Messages
Go To Quiz (offline/online)

The King James Version (KJV) is mostly used in these lessons. Click here to access the KJV online.

The work of preaching the gospel has not been committed to angels, but has been entrusted to men.
Holy angels have been employed in directing this work, they have in charge the great movements for
the salvation of men; but the actual proclamation of the gospel is performed by the servants of Christ
upon the earth.
Faithful men, who were obedient to the promptings of God's Spirit and the teachings of His word,
were to proclaim this warning to the world. The Great Controversy, page 312.
For The Hour Of His Judgment Is Come

1. What is the work that Christ has committed to the church?

And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark
16:15.
NOTE: Before the coming of the Son of man, the everlasting gospel is to be preached to every
nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people. Revelation 14:6, 14. God hath appointed a day, in the
which He will judge the world. Acts 17:31. Christ tells us when that day shall be ushered in. He does
not say that all the world will be converted, but that this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in
all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. By giving the gospel to the
world it is in our power to hasten our Lords return. We are not only to look for but to hasten the
coming of the day of God. 2 Peter 3:12, margin. Had the church of Christ done her appointed work as
the Lord ordained, the whole world would before this have been warned, and the Lord Jesus would
have come to our earth in power and great glory. The Desire of Ages, pages 633, 634.
2. How does Paul define the gospel?
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one
that believeth. Romans 1:16.
Answer: The power of God unto salvation to everyone that believe.
God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16. He who repents of his sin and accepts the gift of the
life of the Son of God, cannot be overcome. Laying hold by faith of the divine nature, he becomes a
child of God. He prays, he believes. When tempted and tried, he claims the power that Christ died to
give, and overcomes through His grace. This every sinner needs to understand. He must repent of his
sin, he must believe in the power of Christ, and accept that power to save and to keep him from sin.
Selected Messages Book 1, page 224.
3. As the final generation of Gods people proclaims the Gospel, what warning must they also
give?
And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto
them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a
loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him
that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Revelation 14:6, 7.

NOTE: The fact that an angel is said to be the herald of this warning is significant. By the purity,
the glory, and the power of the heavenly messenger, divine wisdom has been pleased to represent the
exalted character of the work to be accomplished by the message and the power and glory that were
to attend it. And the angel's flight in the midst of heaven, the loud voice with which the warning is
uttered, and its promulgation to all that dwell on the earth,--to every nation, and kindred, and tongue,
and people,--give evidence of the rapidity and world-wide extent of the movement.
The message itself sheds light as to the time when this movement is to take place. It is declared to be
a part of the everlasting gospel; and it announces the opening of the judgment. The message of
salvation has been preached in all ages; but this message is a part of the gospel which could be
proclaimed only in the last days, for only then would it be true that the hour of judgment had come.
The Great Controversy, page 355.
4. In view of the fact that the time has now come for Gods judgment, what three things are all
men called to do?
Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come:
and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. Revelation
14:7.
Answer:
1. To fear God
2. To give glory to Him
3. To worship Him that made heaven and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
NOTE: The first angel's message of Revelation 14, announcing the hour of God's judgment and
calling upon men to fear and worship Him, was designed to separate the professed people of God
from the corrupting influences of the world and to arouse them to see their true condition of
worldliness and backsliding. In this message, God has sent to the church a warning, which, had it
been accepted, would have corrected the evils that were shutting them away from Him. Had they
received the message from heaven, humbling their hearts before the Lord and seeking in sincerity a
preparation to stand in His presence, the Spirit and power of God would have been manifested among
them. The church would again have reached that blessed state of unity, faith, and love which existed
in apostolic days, when the believers 'were of one heart and of one soul,' and 'spake the word of God
with boldness,' when 'the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.' Acts 4:32, 3;
2:47. The Great Controversy, page 379.
5. What does it mean to 'fear God'?
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is
the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing,
whether it be good, or whether it be evil. Ecclesiastes 12:13, 14. See also Psalm 34:1114; Psalm
111:10; Proverbs 8:13.
Answer: To fear God does not mean to be afraid of Him as someone would be afraid of an enemy
who is seeking to harm them. In fact, those who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD (Psalm 115:11)
and love Him. What doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk
in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy
soul. Deuteronomy 10:12.
When we fear God as He wishes us to, we will respect, reverence, love, and trust Him with all our
heart. Fearing God means to respect Him for who He is, and be in awe of Him, realizing His
greatness, power, and position. When we contemplate how great God is and realize that He tenderly
loves us as a father pities his children, then we will love Him in return. This godly fear causes us to

hate sin and turn from it. Solomon explained it in this way: The fear of the LORD is to hate evil.
Proverbs 8:13. By the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. Proverbs 16:6.
Fearing and loving God will cause us to turn from our sins and keep Gods commandments.
Therefore, the first part of this angels message is calling us to love, honor, respect, and fear the true
God of heaven, which will cause us to turn from our evil ways.
NOTE: By the first angel, men are called upon to 'fear God, and give glory to Him' and to worship
Him as the Creator of the heavens and the earth. In order to do this, they must obey His law. . .
Without obedience to His commandments no worship can be pleasing to God. 'This is the love of
God, that we keep His commandments.' 'He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his
prayer shall be abomination.' 1 John 5:3; Proverbs 28:9. The Great Controversy, page 436.
Christs followers today should guard against the tendency to lose the spirit of reverence and godly
fear. The Scriptures teach men how they should approach their Makerwith humility and awe,
through faith in a divine Mediator. Prophets and Kings, page 48.
True reverence for God is inspired by a sense of His infinite greatness and a realization of His
presence. With this sense of the Unseen, every heart should be deeply impressed. The hour and place
of prayer are sacred, because God is there. And as reverence is manifested in attitude and demeanor,
the feeling that inspires it will be deepened. Holy and reverend is His name, the psalmist declares.
Psalm 111:9. Angels, when they speak that name, veil their faces. With what reverence, then, should
we, who are fallen and sinful, take it upon our lips! Prophets and Kings, pages 48, 49.
When men cast off the fear of God they are not long in departing from honor and integrity.
Patriarchs and Prophets, page 557.
6. What does it mean to give 'glory to God'?
And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass
before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I
will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And the LORD passed by
before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and
abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression
and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the
children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. Exodus 33:18,
19; 34:6,7. Compare John 17:4 and Matthew 5:16.
Answer: To give glory to God is to reveal His character in our own, and thus make Him known. And
in whatever way we make known the Father or the Son, we glorify God. Man was made to give glory
to God. God said, Every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have
formed him; yea, I have made him. (Isaiah 43:7) It is our highest privilege to give glory to God. But
how can we do this? Is it accomplished by singing praises to God? That is part of it, but giving glory
to God includes much more.
God has given us a clear revelation of His glory through the life of His Son, Jesus Christ. John wrote,
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. John 1:14.
The glory of Gods wonderful character of love was manifested in the life of Jesus Christ. When
Jesus reached out His hand to lift a leper to His feet and give him healing; when He touched the eyes
of the blind to give them sight; when He saw the multitude and was moved with compassion, it was
merely a reflection of what God the Father would do if He were in the same situation. For Jesus said,
The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. John 14:10.

Paul wrote, God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to
give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6)
God has shined His light into our hearts for the purpose of giving us the knowledge of the goodness
of God, which is revealed in the life of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ reflected Gods character perfectly.
Of all the people who lived upon this earth, Jesus Christ gave glory to God more fully and perfectly
than anyone else ever has. No wonder the Bible says that Jesus is the express image of the Father.
(Hebrews 1:3) He is our example. His life is the one after which we are to mold our lives.
Paul explained to us how we can give glory to God when He wrote, We all, with open face
beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory,
even as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18. As we behold the goodness and love of God,
we will naturally begin to reflect that goodness in our own lives. John put it this way, Behold, what
manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us. 1 John 3:1. The more we see the goodness and
love of God, the more we will love, praise, and give glory to Him. The only way we can truly give
glory to God is by first beholding His glory; His goodness and love.
Therefore, the second part of this message is calling us to behold Gods character of love and reflect
that character in our lives.
7. How does God ask us to worship Him that made heaven and earth?
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the
seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son,
nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within
thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and
rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Exodus 20:8
11.
Answer: The first angel finally comes to the climax of his message: worship. Notice the order in
which this message goes forth. First we are called to fear, respect, and honor the true God of heaven.
Secondly, we are called to give glory to Him by beholding His goodness and love, which will
produce a corresponding goodness and love in our own lives. Finally, we are called to worship the
only true God who made heaven and earth. If we do not fear the only true God, and give Him glory,
we cannot possibly worship Him correctly.
Notice how David said we are to worship: Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name;
worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Psalm 29:2. To worship God correctly we must give
Him the glory He deserves, and worship Him in the beauty of holiness; with a holy life
representative of the holy God we worship.
God commanded us, There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange
god. Psalms 81:9. A stranger is someone we dont know. If God is a stranger to us, our worship is in
vain.
NOTE: The importance of the Sabbath as the memorial of creation is that it keeps ever present the
true reason why worship is due to God--because He is the Creator, and we are His creatures. The
Sabbath therefore lies at the very foundation of divine worship, for it teaches this great truth in the
most impressive manner, and no other institution does this. The true ground of divine worship, not of
that on the seventh day merely, but of all worship, is found in the distinction between the Creator and
His creatures. This great fact can never become obsolete, and must never be forgotten.--J. N.
Andrews, History of the Sabbath, chapter 27. It was to keep this truth ever before the minds of men,
that God instituted the Sabbath in Eden; and so long as the fact that He is our Creator continues to be
a reason why we should worship Him, so long the Sabbath will continue as its sign and memorial.
Had the Sabbath been universally kept, man's thoughts and affections would have been led to the
Creator as the object of reverence and worship, and there would never have been an idolater, an

atheist, or an infidel. The keeping of the Sabbath is a sign of loyalty to the true God, Him that made
heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters. It follows that the message which
commands men to worship God and keep His commandments will especially call upon them to keep
the fourth commandment. The Great Controversy, page 437.

Babylon Is Fallen, Is Fallen

8. What further message is the final generation of Gods people called to give? Revelation 14:8.
And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she
made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
NOTE: The term Babylon is derived from Babel, and signifies confusion. It is employed in
Scripture to designate the various forms of false or apostate religion. In Revelation 17, Babylon is
represented as a womana figure which is used in the Bible as the symbol of a church, a virtuous
woman representing a pure church, a vile woman an apostate church. The Great Controversy, page
381.
The second angel's message of Revelation 14 was first preached in the summer of 1844, and it then
had a more direct application to the churches of the United States, where the warning of the judgment
had been most widely proclaimed and most generally rejected, and where the declension in the
churches had been most rapid. But the message of the second angel did not reach its complete
fulfillment in 1844. The churches then experienced a moral fall, in consequence of their refusal of the
light of the advent message; but that fall was not complete. As they have continued to reject the
special truths for this time they have fallen lower and lower. Not yet, however, can it be said that
'Babylon is fallen... because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.'
She has not yet made all nations do this. The spirit of world conforming and indifference to the
testing truths for our time exists and has been gaining ground in churches of the Protestant faith in all
the countries of Christendom; and these churches are included in the solemn and terrible
denunciation of the second angel. Ibid., page 389.
9. What reason is given for Babylons fall?
Because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication. Revelation 14:8,
last part.
NOTE: The great sin charged against Babylon is that she made all nations drink of the wine of the
wrath of her fornication. This cup of intoxication which she presents to the world represents the false
doctrines that she has accepted as the result of her unlawful connection with the great ones of the
earth. The Great Controversy, page 388.
10. What call must be given to those of Gods people who are still in Babylon?
And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the
earth was lightened with his glory. And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the
great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a
cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the
earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. And I heard another voice from
heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive
not of her plagues. For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Revelation 18:15.
NOTE: Revelation 18 points to the time when, as the result of rejecting the threefold warning of
Revelation 14:612, the church will have fully reached the condition foretold by the second angel,
and the people of God still in Babylon will be called upon to separate from her communion. This

message is the last that will ever be given to the world; and it will accomplish its work. The Great
Controversy, page 390.

11. What will be the danger for those who choose to stay in Babylon?
And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not
partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. Revelation 18:4.
NOTE: Notwithstanding the widespread declension of faith and piety, there are true followers of
Christ in these churches. Before the final visitation of God's judgments upon the earth there will be
among the people of the Lord such a revival of primitive godliness as has not been witnessed since
apostolic times. The Spirit and power of God will be poured out upon His children. At that time
many will separate themselves from those churches in which the love of this world has supplanted
love for God and His word. Many, both of ministers and people, will gladly accept those great truths
which God has caused to be proclaimed at this time to prepare a people for the Lord's second coming.
The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work; and before the time for such a movement shall come,
he will endeavor to prevent it by introducing a counterfeit. In those churches which he can bring
under his deceptive power he will make it appear that God's special blessing is poured out; there will
be manifest what is thought to be great religious interest. Multitudes will exult that God is working
marvelously for them, when the work is that of another spirit. Under a religious guise, Satan will seek
to extend his influence over the Christian world. The Great Controversy, page 464.
TheThird Angel's Message

12. What is the essence of the third angels message?

And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his
image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the
wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be
tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the
Lamb Revelation 14:9, 10.
Answer: This symbol (the beast), as most Protestants have believed, represents the Papacy. The
image to the beast represents that form of apostate Protestantism which will be developed when the
Protestant churches shall seek the aid of the civil power for the enforcement of their dogmas.
NOTE: In contrast to those who keep the commandments of God and have the faith of Jesus, the
third angel points to another class, against whose errors a solemn and fearful warning is uttered:
[Revelation 14:9, 10 quoted]. The Great Controversy, page 438.
13. The third angels message warns against three things, what are they?
If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand.
Revelation 14:9.
Answer:
A. The beast, which is the papacy.
B. The image of the beast, which is formed when the United States makes and enforces laws for the
observance of Sunday.

C. The mark of the beast, which is received when, though Gods requirements regarding His holy day
(Sabbath) are known to all, Sunday is observed as the day of worship because it is commanded by the
law of the land.

A Message of Warning
14. What is the issue involved?
It is time for thee, LORD, to work: for they have made void thy law. Psalm 119:126.
Answer: the real issue is on the law of God and the fourth commandment [Sabbath] to be precise.
NOTE: But Christians of past generations observed the Sunday, supposing that in so doing they
were keeping the Bible Sabbath; and there are now true Christians in every church, not excepting the
Roman Catholic communion, who honestly believe that Sunday is the Sabbath of divine appointment.
God accepts their sincerity of purpose and their integrity before Him. But when Sunday observance
shall be enforced by law, and the world shall be enlightened concerning the obligation of the true
Sabbath, then whoever shall transgress the command of God, to obey a precept which has no higher
authority than that of Rome, will thereby honor popery above God. He is paying homage to Rome
and to the power which enforces the institution ordained by Rome. He is worshipping the beast and
his image. As men then reject the institution which God has declared to be the sign of His authority,
and honor in its stead that which Rome has chosen as the token of her supremacy, they will thereby
accept the sign of allegiance to Rome--'the mark of the beast.' And it is not until the issue is thus
plainly set before the people, and they are brought to choose between the commandments of God and
the commandments of men, that those who continue in transgression will receive the mark of the
beast. The Great Controversy, page 449.
15. When human legislation shall conflict with the law of God by demanding false worship, how
will the world be divided?
And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and
ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. And the beast
which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the
mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. And I saw one
of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world
wondered after the beast. And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they
worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?. . . And
all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the
Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. Revelation 13:14, 8.
Answer: National Sunday Law. Christians will naturally strive to ensure that civil legislation
respects their duty to keep Sunday holy. Sunday must be sanctified. Pope John Paul II, Dies
Domini, point 67, July 7, 1998.
NOTE: In the issue of the contest all Christendom will be divided into two great classesthose
who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who worship the beast and his
image and receive his mark. The Great Controversy, page 450.
In comparison with the millions of the world, Gods people will be, as they have ever been, a little
flock; but if they stand for the truth as revealed in His word, God will be their refuge. The Acts of
the Apostles, page 590.

Great Wonders
16. How will a religio-political power, symbolized by the second beast, flatter and imitate the
first beast?

And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he
spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth
and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. . . And
deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in
the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the
beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. Revelation 13:11, 12, 14.
NOTE: The lamblike horns and dragon voice of the symbol point to a striking contradiction
between the professions and the practice of the nation thus represented. The speaking of the nation
is the action of its legislative and judicial authorities. By such action it will give the lie to those
liberal and peaceful principles which it has put forth as the foundation of its policy. The prediction
that it will speak as a dragon and exercise all the power of the first beast [Revelation 13:11, 12]
plainly foretells a development of the spirit of intolerance and persecution that was manifested by the
nations represented by the dragon and the leopardlike beast. And the statement that the beast with
two horns causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast [verse 12]
indicates that the authority of this nation is to be exercised in enforcing some observance which shall
be an act of homage to the papacy. The Great Controversy, page 442.
17. What will Satan use to deceive the inhabitants of the earth? What specific truth must we
understand in order to escape many of these delusions?
And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight
of men. Revelation 13:13.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more
a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is
now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 9:5, 6.
Answer: Satan is currently using false miracles to deceive the inhabitants of the world. We must
have a correct understanding of what the Scripture says about the state of the dead for us not to be
deceived.
As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ. The church
has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great
deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest
himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son
of God given by John in the Revelation. Revelation 1:13-15. The glory that surrounds him is
unsurpassed by anything that mortal eyes have yet beheld. The shout of triumph rings out upon the
air: 'Christ has come! Christ has come!' The people prostrate themselves in adoration before him,
while he lifts up his hands and pronounces a blessing upon them, as Christ blessed His disciples
when He was upon the earth. His voice is soft and subdued, yet full of melody. In gentle,
compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour
uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to
have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. He
declares that those who persist in keeping holy the seventh day are blaspheming his name by refusing
to listen to his angels sent to them with light and truth. This is the strong, almost overmastering
delusion. Like the Samaritans who were deceived by Simon Magus, the multitudes, from the least to

the greatest, give heed to these sorceries, saying: This is 'the great power of God.' Acts 8:10. The
Great Controversy, page 624.
Satan will come in to deceive if possible the very elect. He claims to be Christ, and he is coming in,
pretending to be the great medical missionary. He will cause fire to come down from heaven in the
sight of men to prove that he is God. We must stand barricaded by the truths of the Bible. The
Review and Herald, April 14, 1903, par. 28.

No Man Might Buy Or Sell

18. What is the object of the second beast, in direct opposition to the law of God? What is the
mark of the beast?
And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their
right hand, or in their foreheads Revelation 13:16.
Answer: The sign, or seal, of God is revealed in the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, the
Lords memorial of creation. [Exodus 31:12, 13 quoted.] Here the Sabbath is clearly designated as a
sign between God and His people.
The mark of the beast is the opposite of thisthe observance of the first day of the week. This mark
distinguishes those who acknowledge the supremacy of the papal authority from those who
acknowledge the authority of God.
NOTE: As the sign of the authority of the Catholic Church, papist writers cite 'the very act of
changing the Sabbath into Sunday, which Protestants allow of; . . . because by keeping Sunday, they
acknowledge the church's power to ordain feasts, and to command them under sin.'--Henry
Tuberville, An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine, page 58. What then is the change of the
Sabbath, but the sign, or mark, of the authority of the Roman Church--'the mark of the beast'? The
Great Controversy, page 438.
19. What sanctions will be imposed by the authorities on those who refuse to receive the mark
of the beast?
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the
number of his name. . . . And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of
the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast
should be killed. Revelation 13:17, 15.
NOTE: The powers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree that all,
both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond (Revelation 13:16), shall conform to the customs
of the church by the observance of the false sabbath. All who refuse compliance will be visited with
civil penalties, and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death. The Great
Controversy, page 604.

Seven Last Plagues

20. What punishment will Heaven send upon those who receive the mark of apostasy and
accept the false worship imposed by the powers symbolized by the two beasts?
The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the
cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy
angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and
ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever
receiveth the mark of his name. Revelation 14:10, 11.

Answer: The seven last plagues.

NOTE: The most fearful threatening ever addressed to mortals is contained in the third angels
message. That must be a terrible sin which calls down the wrath of God unmingled with mercy. Men
are not to be left in darkness concerning this important matter; the warning against this sin is to be
given to the world before the visitation of Gods judgments, that all may know why they are to be
inflicted, and have opportunity to escape them. The Great Controversy, page 449, 450.
21. While the servants of God will be protected from the seven last plagues (Malachi 3:17),
what will happen to the adherents of the false system of worship?
And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out
the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth. And the first went, and poured out his vial upon the
earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast, and
upon them which worshipped his image. Revelation 16:1, 2.
NOTE: When Christ ceases His intercession in the sanctuary, the unmingled wrath threatened
against those who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark (Revelation 14:9, 10), will
be poured out. The plagues upon Egypt when God was about to deliver Israel were similar in
character to those more terrible and extensive judgments which are to fall upon the world just before
the final deliverance of God's people. . . . These plagues are not universal, or the inhabitants of the
earth would be wholly cut off. Yet they will be the most awful scourges that have ever been known to
mortals. All the judgments upon men, prior to the close of probation, have been mingled with mercy.
The pleading blood of Christ has shielded the sinner from receiving the full measure of his guilt; but
in the final judgment, wrath is poured out unmixed with mercy. The Great Controversy, page 627,
628.
