Course Duration April 9-June 10

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Operations management is the study of management related to Operations for both

manufacturing and service organizations. This course will cover those key principles
essential to understanding the role of the Operations function in the business
environment. Topics covered include Introduction; The Role of Technology in
Operations; Integrating Manufacturing and Services; New Product and Service
Development, and Process Selection; Process Measurement and Analysis; Quality
Management and Facility Location, Capacity and Layouts. This course will be taught as
if students were general managers, not operations managers, with a need to understand
the principles as opposed to detailed calculations. Detailed calculations relating to many
of the Operations Management functions will be covered in Operations Research.

Topics to be Covered

1
1. Develop a basic understanding of the tools and techniques of Operations
Management principles
2. Recognize and describe the differences and similarities between
manufacturing and service processes and know the role of the operations
manager for both manufacturing and service operations.
3. Apply the principles of the transformational process to their organization and
describe the relevant steps.

The text for this course is Operations Management, Integrating Manufacturing and
Services, Fifth Edition. Mark M. Davis and Janelle Heineke

Evaluation and Grading

• 70% assignments/cases/presentations/critique of team case. Individual 1-15% .

other individual (3 separate and 2 when other teams are presenting), 7 points each.
Team-20% (15% for team presentation/analysis, 2.5% for quality of critique and
2.5% for quality of summary, of other team presentations)
• 10% Teleconference participation.
• 10% Discussion board participation
• 10% Final examination
• Individual cases should be a minimum 3 pages, double spaced font size 12. There
is no maximum as long as the information is relevant to the case topic.

For assignment 1 below, after reading Chapters 1, please read and study Exhibit 1.2 on
page 7 and Exhibit 2.1 on page 27. (I know I did not ask you to read Chapter 2, but
please take a look at the exhibit). Then select an organizational unit in your company (it
can be your immediate organization or whatever you choose). Then consider each of the
steps in the Transformation process shown in the Exhibits and define what elements in
your selected organization are part of the process. Just naming them is not enough. I
want to see some elaboration on the role they play in the process. For example, if I am a
miller, and my product is flour I will input wheat, grind it to some granular level (add
value), and output wheat to some specification. I will have some kind of check of the
flour and collect data for feedback. External factors could be wheat quality and
availability, etc. Components could be milling machine, etc. Please keep in mind that
this process does apply to both manufacturing and service organizations. ( I have omitted
some elaboration but for example wheat quality will determine the quality of the flour
and/or the machine settings to grind as well as the type of feedback data collection used.
Please also note that this transformation process is a summary of what operations
management is all about. Everything else about operations management should be
somehow related to this process. Therefore I expect you to spend some time
undersanding it as it applies to your organization (the one you selected for the
assignment).

2
For other individual assignments, the minimum acceptable is to answer, with elaboration,
the questions posed at the end of each case. If you want a grade higher than 90, you will
need to add something other than answers to the questions in the book. This can be
additional observation, personal experience, or how this relates to your company, etc..

Following are team assignments for team presentations (one team presentation per team):

Teams

Team A Team B Team C Team D

Baird Arthanari Chan Murray
Chen Cho Murphy Shannon
Deaver Oliver Patrick Vilaga
Reeves Slater Perkins Wurch
Varney

NOTE: Team roles for the 4 team presentations are: B will critique A’s presentation, C
will critique B’s presentation and D will critique C’s and A will critique D’s. I will select
the person on each team to make the presentation at the time of the presentation. I will
also select the person from the critiquing team to do the critique. At the end of each
critique the team not presenting or critiquing will summarize the case. I will select the
team member to summarize.

The team critiquing is required to submit a team solution to the case they are critiquing.
Others are required to submit an individual solution to each case. For example, when
team A presents, team B must submit a solution to the case, and all others must submit an
individual solution. When team B presents, team C is required to submit a team solution
to the case and all others an individual solution, etc.

Presentation- same material to be covered as for individual case analysis. I will select the
team member to present one minute prior to the presentation.
Critique- Give both positive and improvement feedback comments, including
presentation effectiveness. I will select the team member to critique after the
presentation.
Summary- Summarize the points from the chapter and relate to the case. I will select the
team member to summarize after the critique.

All team case analysis must be submitted not later than 24 hours prior to presentation.
Team cases will only be submitted to me, not to the critique and summary teams. Late
submission of any case will result in a 10 point deduction in the grade for that case unless
an extension is granted prior to the due date/time.

3
• Discussion Board participation-minimum of 3 insightful comments at different times.
Topic will be posted not later than April 7.

Each teleconference absence will result in a 3 point reduction in students final

grade.

Soft copies of all assignments must be submitted prior to being presented. All
non-presented assignments must be submitted not later than midnight Sunday of
week due.

Class will be exempt from taking the final examination if it has: 100% attendance
to and participation in teleconferences, 100% participation in discussion board,
submission of all assignments on time and 100% participation in team
assignments

Individuals are exempt from the final examination if they have: 100% attendance
to teleconferences, all assignments submitted on time (including team),
participation in team assignments, participation in discussion board and a 90%
average on all work prior.
