Trisomet SC Overview

Trisomet SC System
overview
Trisomet SC is part of the Colorcoat Renew SC System, an integrated solar
air heating solution that encompasses system design, renewable energy
generation and control, to provide space heating and ventilation air for any
type of building whether it's new build or retrofit, industrial, commercial,
public or residential.

The proven technology behind the Colorcoat Renew SC System was

originally pioneered in North America and is already leading the way in
the solar heating industry for that part of the world. Tata Steel, together
with the Low Carbon Research Institute and the Welsh Government,
have invested 6 million in the creation of the Sustainable Building
Envelope Centre, where the research team have reviewed the
technology and further extended its capability. The system has now
been developed to provide a unique combination of design, heat
generation and control.

Trisomet SC System

Trisomet SC System incorporates:

Trisomet 333 Backing Wall
The Trisomet 333 System from Tata Steel is an insulated wall panel
system providing a thin construction and fast installation. Its autohesively bonded polyisocyanurate (PIR) insulation core uses the latest
foam technology providing enhanced environmental benefits, high
thermal performance and fire performance approved by LPCB.
Titan Spacer System
The system cavity is created using the Titan bar and bracket which
provides a robust system to support the Colorcoat solar collector
together with providing minimum disruption to air flow.
Colorcoat Solar Collector
The Colorcoat solar collector is available in a range of profiles and

Trisomet SC Performance

How does it work?

Colorcoat Solar Collector

Air Distribution

A cavity is created between the Colorcoat Solar Collector and

the Trisomet 333 backing wall using the Titan spacer system.

The pre-heated fresh air within the cavity is drawn into the
building using the fan unit.

The Colorcoat Solar Collector absorbs the suns energy and

creates a
pre-heated boundary layer of air close to its surface.

The warm air can be simply fed directly into the building as
ventilation air (e.g. industrial applications)

A fan unit creates a negative pressure with in the cavity of the

Trisomet SC System

Or the warm air can alternatively be ducted into a HVAC unit

where it is used as a pre-heater to the main heating system.
(e.g. commercial buildings)

This negative pressure draws the pre-heated boundary air layer

through the micro perforations into the cavity.

The option of ducting the pre-heated air in the HVAC system will
reduce the heating load and can provide efficiency
improvements of up 80 per cent.

Destratification

In a stratified building high temperature differentials can be

found between floor and ceiling level, causing low efficiency of
heating systems.

The pre-heated air from the Colorcoat Renew SC System is

introduced at ceiling level to combat this effect.

Destratification via roof level ducting reduces the heating load by

circulating the hot air to floor level.

Energy savings are gained, as the heating system is no longer

over delivering in order to constantly replace the heat that rises
away from the floor area.

Is your building
suitable?
Colorcoat Renew SC is ideally suited to
buildings where ventilated, fresh air is used
to deliver space heating but it can be fitted
to any building, new build or retro fit that
has a requirement for space heating during
the day.

As the system uses solar energy to generate

heat there is simply a requirement for a
southerly facing, unshaded wall elevation for
installation of the Colorcoat solar collector.
The most efficient orientation is due south,
but the system will still work in other
orientations as shown below. Simply put, a
larger Colorcoat solar collector area (or darker
colour) may be required to deliver an
equivalent amount of heat as for due south.

Trisomet SC Design

Detailed design
Pre-engineered solutions

Engineered solutions

Colorcoat Renew SC System is available in a pre-engineered form to

suit common M&E applications. A pre-engineered solution is ideal for
buildings adopting a regular HEVAC solution, and is a lower cost
option as the plug and play approach reduces bespoke design and
commissioning costs.

For projects demanding a more complex design and that do not fall
into the pre engineered solutions, an additional stage will need to be
added between Stage 1 and Stage 2. This will comprise of Tata Steel or
one of our approved engineering businesses developing a bespoke
design. The cost of this work would need to be considered in the
feasibility stage.

We have developed different system configurations to suit your needs

that are dependent on variables such as air change requirements,
building size, integration with other HEVAC systems. Approved
accessories such as fans and ducts form part of the overall specification
and facilitate integration of the Trisomet SC System within the project.

1. Feasibility Study

Tata Steel's commercial team are

available to explain how the system
works and what benefits you can gain
from installing the Colorcoat Renew SC
System on your building.

During this initial meeting we will need

to collate information on your building
(i.e. dimensions, orientation, heating
requirements etc.).

This information will be fed back to

Technical engineers, who use this
information to provide a feasibility study
for your building.

10 Copyright 2012 Tata Steel UK Limited

2. Specification

3. Installation

We will go through the feasibility report

with you to explain the prediction of
renewable energy delivery, CO2 savings
and payback periods.

Further to the above being satisfactory to

your requirements or our Technical
engineers will provide a detailed
specification.

The specification will provide details of

the Colorcoat solar collector cladding
package and also provide installation
manuals for the M&E requirements.

Detail quotations can be sourced from an

accredited supply chain (details of which
will be supplied by Tata Steel).

During construction an inspection will

take place to ensure Tata Steel material(s)
and all associated third party
components (fixtures and fittings) from
Platinum approved suppliers are used
on the project.

Platinum System Guarantee covering the

building envelope is issued to the
contractor who in turn passes this onto
the client providing peace of mind for up
to 25 years on materials and 12 years on
workmanship.

Trisomet SC Projects

Case studies
Jaguar Land Rover Deck 92
Colorcoat solar collector: 565m2
Colorcoat Prisma in Slate Grey.
Client: Jaguar Land Rover
Specifier: Anglo Holt
M&E contractor: Couch Perry Wilkes
Main contractor: Anglo Holt
Contractor: Roofwise
System manufacturer: Tata Steel
Predicted financial payback: 8 years
Predicted energy saving: 82MWh/year
(solar radiation) + 112MWh (reduction of
thermal losses)

The Jaguar Land Rover Deck 92 project is a

new 10,000m2 material, planning and
logistics centre. Tata Steel was the company
of choice for the entire building envelope,
with the office block featuring a metal deck
flat roof with its walls clad with the
Trimapanel System, and the main building
using a Trisomet 333 panel on both roof
and walls. The Centre also incorporates
Colorcoat Renew SC enabling the building
envelope to play an active role in the
buildings environmental performance.

The 565m2 area of Colorcoat solar collector

was clad with a T333 profile in Slate Grey,
which complemented the Trisomet 333 wall
panel which features Colorcoat Prisma in
Oyster. Jaguar Landrover benefits from a

pre-finished steel cladding system that is

durable, sustainable and will deliver 82MWh
solar radiation and 11MWh reduction of
thermal losses per annum, providing a
payback of less than eight years.

Using Colorcoat Renew SC on this building

has enabled the provision of pre-heated,
ventilated, fresh air thereby reducing the
energy load on the primary heating system
and minimising heat losses due to the
infiltration of cold ambient air. The preengineered control system optimizes the
renewable heat gain and provides night time
purge cooling in the summer months.
By incorporating Colorcoat Renew SC Jaguar
Land Rover have achieved a low cost source of
renewable energy, reduced overall energy
consumption in the building and helped
towards their targets of reducing CO2
emissions from their manufacturing
operations.

Sustainable Building Envelope Centre (SBEC)

Colorcoat solar collector: 95m2
Colorcoat Prisma in Anthracite Matt,
62m2 in Linden Green.
Client: Tata Steel
Architect: Welsh School of Architecture
M&E contractor: Kimpton Building
Systems
Cladding contractor: Lester Fabrications
System manufacturer: Tata Steel
Predicted financial payback: 10 years
Predicted energy saving: 39MWh/year

The Sustainable Building Envelope Centre

(SBEC) is a 6 million research centre in
North Wales that is co-funded by Tata Steel,
the Low Carbon Research Institute and Welsh
Government to accelerate the development
of low carbon solutions for the built
environment. The SBEC building was fitted
with Colorcoat Renew SC to provide a low
cost source of renewable energy, reducing
overall energy consumption within the
building whilst improving its aesthetic
appearance.
Colorcoat Renew SC was applied to the
exterior of the SBEC building, providing a
Colorcoat solar collector area of 156m2, and
has acted as a highly effective renewable
energy system. The system achieves up to 75%
efficiency converting solar radiation to usable
heat energy, and each 1m2 of Colorcoat solar
collector area can deliver 250kWh heat per
year. At SBEC, the installed system has the
potential to produce up to 39MWh per year.
The system incorporates Colorcoat Prisma in
Matt Anthracite pre-finished steel by Tata Steel
as the Colorcoat solar collector. This has been
installed as an additional skin onto the
existing walls of the SBEC building, creating a
cavity between the supporting wall and the
metal skin. Negative air pressure within the
cavity draws pre-heated boundary layer air
through perforations in the Colorcoat solar
collectors surface, into the cavity. The heated

fresh air is then fed either directly into the

building as ventilation, or ducted into a HVAC
unit where it is used as a pre-heater to the
main heating system. Colorcoat Renew SC
includes a pre-engineered control system to
maximise its operational efficiency and to help
ensure performance is optimised.
In common with many commercial and
industrial buildings, heating accounts for a
large proportion of energy consumption at
SBEC. By reducing the energy load on the
primary heating systems, the application of

Trisomet SC has reduced heating costs as

well as improving the buildings
environmental performance.
In addition to the environmental and cost
benefits of using Trisomet SC as part of the
Colorcoat Renew SC System has also
provided an aesthetically pleasing, modern
design to a prominent elevation of the SBEC
building, together with the peace of mind that
corrosion resistance and colour stability of the
Colorcoat solar collector is guaranteed for up
to 25 years.
