Masthead: the masthead is placed behind the main image this

indicates its a already established magazine so they do not need to

flash their masthead around, so they would rather draw the
audiences attention to the main image which is the selling point. Its
written in blue which connotes stability and confidence, this could
appeal to certain audiences as the colour may reassure their
confidents that its a good magazine. The masthead is the biggest and
boldest font on the front cover, even though its pushed behind the
main image this clearly makes it stand out before the anchorage text,
this symbolises its importance. The word the is pushed to the left
and is vertical, also written in smaller texts, this tells us that source
is the most important aspect to the masthead, however, the
combined with source makes it sound like this magazine is the only
one you should buy, the makes the magazine seem likes its the one
and only. source indicates that this magazine is the beginning of all
great music and in that case they have the best interviews, posters
and storys inside. The font is almost like graffiti which tells us they
are targeting a young audience.

Main image: the main image is clearly the main

focus/selling point to his magazine, this is because there
are three famous rappers on the front, audience will
see this and will be tempted to purchase the magazine
as they have seen perhaps their favourite rapper on the
front. The main image is place infront of the masthead
this tells us its more important than the masthead. All
three rappers are facing towards the camera, this
makes the audience think they are looking at them
directly and make them feel involved. In terms of miseen-scene the three rappers look fashionable, also, all
three seem to be wearing loads of jewellery, ths suggest
they are wealthy and successful in the music industry.
The person on the right is placed behind the other 2,
this may indicate hes less successful or perhaps up and
coming. The readers can find out the name of either of
the rappers they see on the front by looking at the
anchorage text.

Anchorage text: the anchorage text on this magazine follows the

colour scheme, they have used different font types and size to
determine whats more important than the other. For example the
anchorage text that says coming of age is clearly the most
important and links to the main image, as its written in the biggest
font and also is placed directly over the main image; this links to the
main image as the rappers looks quite young and are also up and
coming artist, their names are written just under the larger text
split up by a bullet point, you can tell which name belongs to who as
the name of the person is on the same side as they are. There also a
link to social media by the barcode type square which can be located
on the left, if scanned by a mobile phone it will take them to a
webpage where they can find the article. The anchorage text located
on the right, has been indicate to be extras which will been in the
magazine by the plus which connotes an adding on symbol the
audience will have a insight of what to expect in the magazine due to
this and the other artists/article names which are written just
underneath the plus.

Skyline: the skyline as usual is located right at the top of

the magazine so its out the way and not grabbing
attention away from any other key features. Unlike the
other text its written in black which makes it clear
thats its separate from the masthead. Like most the
text its written in the same font, but is not the smallest
font size, this makes it more important than the
anchorage text on the right side of the front cover. yet
again this contains artists names which the reader can
find an interview about inside the magazine. I believe
this was an mistake by the magazine as they shouldve
introduce some buzzwords to help sell the magazine
even more; they already have a lot of big artists names
on the front cover.

Masthead: the masthead is the biggest and boldest piece of

text on the front cover this indicates that this is the most
important piece of text on the front cover. On most posters
the masthead is usually place behind the main image, as the
main image is usually the selling point as famous musicians
are always on the front. However, on this particular poster
the masthead is more important than the main image, this is
because its the 15th anniversary issue, this is indicated by
the xv which is Roman numeral for 15, and this is also
supported by the skyline which says 15th anniversary. The
word vibe generally relates to music which indicates the
magazine genre (music) as music generally gives of a certain
vibe/atmosphere. The colour red connotes energy and
passion, indicating that they are an upbeat magazine who
are really focus on modern music. The masthead is mainly
written in capitals letters, however, the letter E is written
in lower case, this may be because the letter e written in
capitals doesnt look as attractive as the lower case e. The
XV is written in black which makes it obvious that the
magazine are trying to indicate its the 15th anniversary.

Anchorage text: its very unusual for a magazine to have as

little anchorage text as this ones does. Usually they are
filled with text that gives an insight into whats in the
magazine. However, I believe this one has so little because
the main image, skyline and masthead are selling this
imparticular magazine because they are made to be more
attention crabbing as its the 15th anniversary. The
anchorage text is located at the bottom of the magazine, so
no attention is drawn for the other key features. Its written
in the second to largest font but yet the skyline is still more
visible as its written in white which merges with the
background and the thin bordering line doesnt make it
stand out. I am legend is written in first person which
makes it seem like its coming from Jay Z himself.

Skyline: the skyline is located at the top of the magazine. Its

the smallest font on the front cover which indicates its the
least important. Usually the skyline contains information
about the magazine like whats in store for the reader or
what artist feature. However, this ones is a special issues as
its the magazine 15th anniversary. Towards the right of the
skyline the words special edition are written in a box, this
gives it a buzz word type effect, this makes the reader think
they are getting something special.
Main image: the main image is of one of the most famous
rappers in the world, hes looking away from the camera
which makes it less direct to the audience, and however,
this makes the audience intrigued to find out what he is
actually looking at. The fact that the image is of this
extremely famous rapper suggest that the magazine is well
established, as its very hard to get interviews and private
shootings with these high profile celebrities. The black and
white effect doesnt allow the main image to draw attention
away from the masthead; which is unusual in normal
magazines. The white background connotes innocents and
gives of a God like effect like hes in heaven. The main image
links to the strap line in that I am legend can be
interrupted as he is the best, therefore he is God which is
connoted from the white background. He has a scarf of
some type round his neck, however, the symbols on the
scarf are extremely well known as Louis Vuitton, which is an
extremely expensive brand. This connotes that Jay Z is very
rich and gives an insight to his social status. Its wrapped
round his neck and its the only item of clothing you can see
him wearing, this plays on the audiences mind that all his
others clothes may be from the same type of brand. He is
not wearing any jewellery which is unusual for a rapper,
however, this could indicate that he differentiates himself
from all over rappers and doesnt like to follow trends but to
make his own. This could be something the magazine are
trying to show about them also, with the little use of
anchorage text.

Main Image:the main image is clearly the most important

thing on the page, this is because there is hardly anything
else on the page, even though he is place behind the text.
He is clearly the centre of attention. The man is wearing a
tone of jewellery on his wrists, fingers and neck. This tells
us that he is very successful as jewellery is expensive, this
also suggest that he is wealthy. Hes holding the jewellery
up like he is show boating his success, the amount of gold
he is holding clearly connotes he is a successful musician.
One of the chains is supporting a large masked face, which
is associated with crime; this could suggest that he use to
live a life of crime before getting into the music industry.
Hes golden teeth could just be an accessory, an act in
order to make him look more thuggish. His tattoos
suggests he is religious as the tattoo on the left is a bible
which says God Bless All, this contradicts the
connotations of the chains and gold teeth as these suggest
thats hes not a religious man. Hes wearing little clothing
which suggest that he must be very confident, also this
could suggest that he has nothing to hide and perhaps he
expresses this in his music.

Masthead/Title: located at the top right of the page, its the

biggest and the boldest piece a text on the page, this
symbolizes its importance. The structure of the text is
unusual as its not written in a single straight line, its written
in 3 layers, this may be because they wanted to keep it in a
large font to keep the importance of it so they layered it up in
order to keep the font size and its importance. The colour
white connotes innocents which in unusual as the person
clearly is connoting crime. The burgundy background allows
the masthead be more eye catching to the audience. Located
in the corner of the page is another masthead which is the
actual title of the magazine, its written in small lettering and
is in a black font which makes it less eye catching, as this isnt
the main attraction to the page. Located just beside the
masthead is a little 1/3 this clearly indicates that this is the
first of 3 contents pages, I believe this is because the majority
of the page has been taken up by the main image, also its a
very well established magazine and the spacious layout makes
the magazine look more professional and sophisticated,
rather than cramming it all onto one page, which will create
an over load in information.

Byline: is located right a the bottom of the page, this is

written in the smallest text on the whole page, this is
because its only the name of the person who took the
picture for the main image.

Headlines: located on the left side of the page, these are used
to direct the audience to a certain article/page that they are
specifically looking for. This specific magazine has 3 contents
pages, this provides a more sophisticated aspect to the
magazine. The text is written in quite a small font, some are
bigger and bolder than others, this shows there importance/a
new page or article. There is a little description of what the
page installs, its very brief but descriptive so the reader feels
persuaded to read the article. Some of the text is placed over
the main image, however this doesnt draw any attention
away from this because its written in small lettering. The text
is spaced out so it doesnt cover the mans wrists, this is
because the font will be unseen do to the light colour on his
jewellery.

Main image: this contents page has many images on it, but the
main image is clearly indicated by its size which overwhelms
the other photos and makes it the most important and eye
catching. The image is a medium wide angled shot, this allows
the audience to see the artists playing the drums, some of the
lighting from the stage lights and even some of the crowd. This
creates a thought about the atmosphere about actually being
at the concert. The artists isnt facing the camera yet still invites
the viewer in by his head being turned slightly to the left. The
black and white effects make it seem old. The main image has a
clear link to the big bold lettering which I believe its part of the
headlines as the masthead is located in the top left; the main
image and the headline clearly link as it says drummer which is
what a drum playing is called in a band, and there is a person
on the stage with a drum kit so this clearly indicates he is the
drummer.
Additional images: amongst the main image there a five extra
images which a link in with the headlines as they a
accompanied with a number in the top left. These images are
there so the audience can view the image and recognise the
artist in the picture and they will know what page to find the
article they are on. These are not accompanied with text, this is
probably because the artists are well know and dont need an
introduction. Rather than fill the page with text and make it
seem compact and over loaded with information the images
provide organisation to the page.

Headlines: this magazine has 2 different types of headlines,

text and picture headlines. The text is located on the left
hand side written under features is written in the smallest
font of the page this shows that the other features are more
important. The page number is written in orange which
makes is more eye catching. The bold numbers and lettering
separates each headline from one another this tells us that
its a new page number and name. under the bold lettering is
a small amount of text under each one, this is a brief
description of what the page is about, viewers can read these
and decide whether they want to read the page.
Masthead: the masthead is located I the top left of the page,
its not the biggest size on the page which connotes its less
important than the big bold letting of drummer this is
probably because the drummer is the most exclusive article
in the magazine. However the masthead is the only thin
written in white with an orange background, so this
separates it from the rest of the page and clearly indicates
that its the page title. The 1/7 clearly shows that this is the
first of 7 contents pages. the masthead fits in nicely with the
colour scheme of the orange details around the page.
Layout: the layout of this magazine follows the typical
conventions of every standard magazine. In comparison to
the vibe contents page, this one seem to be more pushed
together and packed in with more information. I believe
this makes the magazine seem less professional, the over
load in pictures seem to be taken from the internet rather
than a photographer like vibe does, this connotes that the
magazine is less established as vibe and perhaps indicating
its a cheaper magazine.

Main image: the main image is dedicated a whole page for itself, this is an indication that this is the most important aspect to the page
and also the main focus. Hes looking direct at the camera, this make the audience feel more involved in the article like hes actually
looking and talking to them. The image actually follows the colour scheme of the page, especially with the WK on the right hand side,
the black background is the same as the W and the yellow hat is the same as the Y. furthermore the smoke is the same a the white
background on the right side of the page. This has been done in order to make sure the audience unconsciously link the two pages
together. I believe the smoke makes the main image look mysterious as the colour connotes mystery and generally innocent, however,
the fact that it is smoke detracts the thought of the artists being innocent as smoke conveys bad health and usually associated with
young people, especially when smoking drugs. The look on his face seems to be serious, this indicates that he is quite serious with his
music, furthermore, it makes him seem like hes got a smug attitude and he doesnt care what people have to say about him . His hat is
a snapback with the letter P on it. This P symbolizes the artists home city; Pittsburgh.
Layout: the double page spread is usually
one of the most exclusive
interviews/articles in the magazine, this
is why its dedicated a double page. This
specific one has a picture taking up the
whole page and text on the other, this
makes it seem like its almost a portfolio
on the artist. On the right hand side of
the page most the page is taken up by
two large letters, with a type of slogan
underneath, this is unusual as usually the
actual article takes up most of the page.
The colour scheme makes the two pages
link together and lets the audience sub
consciously link the pages together,
otherwise they wouldnt know if the
pages are about the same thing.

Masthead: the masthead is located on the

right hand side of the double page spread.
Its the biggest font on the page which
makes it seem the main focus of the page,
however, as its just two letters I believe its
just used to catch the audiences eye. As I
explain in the main image text box the title
follows the colour scheme of the page, the
colur scheme over the two page makes sure
that the reader links the two pages
together. The boldness of the masthead
really makes it stand out and indicates its
important over the other text.
Subtitle: how high? the subtitle is located
under the masthead this indicates that it is
not the most important piece of text on the
double page spread, this is supported by the
size of the text which is obviously smaller
than the masthead, however, its bigger
than the other text on the page. This may be
an insight to the interview or maybe the
title of his new album which the interview is
talking about.
Text: the text is located right at the bottom
of the right hand page. Its written in a very
small font compared to other feature on the
page. This symbolises that the other
features are what draws the audiences
attention and the text is the in-detail
interview about the artist. The start of the
text is indicated by a large capital b and is
also written in yellow which tells the
audience the interview starts here.

Main Image: the main image takes up a whole page which makes it the main focus of the page. Hes not looking directly towards the
camera which makes the audience feel less interacted with artists/page, he seems to be looking of into the distance and is scratching his
face which makes it seem like he is thinking about something, this makes the image mysterious as the audience wonders what it is he is
thinking about it, also they may believe they may find the answer in the body of text on the right hand side of the page. The main image
links in well with the colour scheme of black and gold, black is associated with power and elegance which makes the page seem very
formal, the colour gold connotes wealth, together both the colours make the artist seem very wealthy and makes an impact on the music
industry. This is support by what he is wearing, especially the watch which seems very expensive. However, considering the jewellery and
colours connote wealth and formality, his hoodie contradicts this as they are associated with thugs. This may be an insight to what type of
music this artists produces, which is R&B. R&B is a very fashionable industry which turns out billions of pounds in profit. This is perhaps
why he is not wearing a suit as it doesnt suit his genre of music and he wants to appeal to a young audience so being fashionable and
appearing successful is key to look like a role model.
Masthead: located on the right hand
side of the double page spread, its been
push down towards the bottom of the
page so it doesnt overlap with the artist
face, this also indicates that it is less
important than the main image. The
masthead follows the colour scheme of
the page. Its written in the largest font
on the page this symbolises that this is
the name of the artists as its overlaid in
front of him, after the name fiasco its
followed by @ 9:30 this would most
likely be a time of a performance he has
scheduled or perhaps a new album
which is going to be released.

Text: the actual article is located on the

right hand side of the page, this is what
the interview is about, the article speaks
about new albums and upcoming release
dates and concert dates. Some of the
text is in yellow this makes it seem more
important than the other text, this may
be because it is release dates or
promotion benefits.

Pull Quote: the pull quote is located in the

top left of the right hand side of the
double page spread. Its the second largest
font on the spread, this indicates it the
second most important piece of texts on
the page. A pull quote is a piece of text
that is taken from the main body of text
and enlarged then displayed in a larger
font on the page, this allows the audience
to have an insight to the interview. The
pull quote also follows the colour scheme
of the page as it is written in the white and
gold. This pull quote looks like something
from a song he has made as it says raps
Lupe which supports this. This could be
an indication to what the interview is
talking about.

Layout: this article is dedicated a double

page spread, this could be because its an
exclusive interview therefore perhaps a
selling point which is probably one of the
sell lines on the front cover. The page has
the main image and masthead on the right
and then an additional image and the main
body of text on the right. The right hand
page is filled with one image this makes it
clear that the article is about this artists,
furthermore this is supported by the
colour scheme which is followed over both
pages, this makes the audience sub
consciously link the pages together. On the
right hand page at the top there is a pull
quote with an image next to it, these are
link together as the quote is from a song as
it says raps and the image next to it is a
picture of one of his performances.
