Apartheid & After

Huis Marseille 2014 ISBN 9789080522701 Acqn 24430
Hb 30x24cm 256pp 205ills 65col 57.95
Printed to accompany an exhibition of thirteen participating photographers at Huis Marseille in
Amsterdam, this catalogue explores the multi-faceted phenomenon of South African visual
culture, both during apartheid and in its aftermath. Along with critical readings by Sean OToole
and Els Barents, it presents work by David Goldblatt, Santu Mofokeng, Jo Ractliffe, Daniel
Naud, Mikhael Subotzky, Sabelo Mlangeni and others. The images reveal how powerfully the
recent past can colour our perception of the present, and how being a photographer in South
Africa requires a sober, articulate and skilled approach to the nations burden of memory, trauma
and guilt.

Nao Tsuda Sameland

Lim Art 2014 ISBN 9784990717339 Acqn 24149
Pb 18x22cm 144pp 60col ills 29.95
Japanese photographer Nao Tsuda took his curiosity and his camera to the far northern reaches
of Scandinavia, where he sought out the indigenous Sami people of Lapland. Witness to
shamanistic rituals, the annual reindeer roundup and relics of ancient habitations, he became
enthralled by the diverse aspects of Sami culture, and how these sometimes semi-nomadic
people, traditionally coastal fishermen, sheep and reindeer herders, or fur trappers, must adapt
their lives to their harsh surroundings. Filled with breathtaking vistas of the summertime Arctic
landscape, this photo book and essay by Tsuda together strive to capture the essence of the
Sami people.

Andre Luetzen - Zhili Byli

Peperoni Books 2014 ISBN 9783941825666 Acqn 24411
Hb 24x22cm 88pp 42col ills 36.50
Andr Ltzen travelled to the far north of Russia to spend time in a little-known place that is
hardly found in guidebooks: Arkhangelsk. Its cold and wet, the river is frozen, the streets are
grey, the buildings dilapidated. The citys 350,000 inhabitants live in prefabricated housing blocks
or simple wooden houses. They are settled in their unspectacular homes, among patterned
wallpaper, televisions and familiar objects, prepared for the long, cold winter. Ltzen enters these
domestic realms, making pictures of how these people live, how they arrange themselves in this
habitat in the middle of nowhere, both indoors and outside. With an essay by Leonid A. Klimov.

Dana Stoelzgen - In Still Air

Peperoni Books 2014 ISBN 9783941825673 Acqn 24413
Pb 19x28cm 160pp 33col ills 37.95
In Dana Stlzgens photographs, time seems to stand still in the landscape shots, close-ups and
interiors, but also in the portraits of young girls, or adult and old women. But actually, time
expands through these subjects, into both the past and future. Young girls look forward to the life
that will lie behind them one day, while the old women look back upon lives that are already just
as full of love, loss, hope, joy and sorrow. Those in the midst of life gaze in both directions.
Generations mirror each other, and our own reflections and memories become part of the
consideration. Gran Gnaudschun writes about this in his poetic text, Mirrors, enclosed in this
tremendously tender book.

Dafy Hagai - Israeli Girls

Art Paper Editions 2014 ISBN 9789490800277 Acqn 24438
Hb 22x33cm 48pp 30col ills 29.95
Tel Aviv-based photographer Dafy Hagai seeks to portray the coming of age of girls in Israel
through a dreamy filter of Americana-tinged snapshots. The series began as a zine intending to
depict suburban Israeli youth culture, and the pictures nostalgically reflect girls on the cusp of
adulthood in a place many consider primarily in terms of its uncertain and controversial political
and social climate. As this image of youth culture in such a place is often lacking, Hagai set out to
show suburban girls who, like their Western counterparts, are just dealing with growing up,
learning about their body, ownership and sexuality. In short, she captures the beauty of girl power
in her hometown.

Jens Liebchen presents a series of arresting beauty and serenity, images that are at once
magical and profound. The snow-covered landscapes of pine trees seem the epitome of natural
spectacle or are they? Upon closer inspection, they appear too pristine, too perfect. The
tradition of Japanese tree shaping has an emblematic role in that culture. The trees and shrubs
growing in Japanese gardens are often drastically modified, with caretakers both controlling their
placement and manipulating the growth of trunks, branches and leaves to attain what is
considered a perfect shape; a system that mirrors Japanese society. Edition of 500 numbered
and signed copies.

Reinout Van Den Bergh - The Miners From Beringen

Eriskay Connection 2014 ISBN 9789492051059 Acqn 24506
Hb 17x23cm 64pp 38ills 18
Thousands of miners lived in the mine housing estate in Beringen in Belgian-Limburg. The mine
permeated the estate. From the start of the 20th century, every day thousands of miners
extracted coal from the ground. Daily they exchanged daylight for dark mine shafts. In their spare
time they got together during sporting events and in the theatre, church, mosque and the caf.
Here, Reinout van den Bergh took his photographs in 1981. With his camera he was part of the
community. He joined the miners into the bathing rooms and into their homes and followed them
underground. He zoomed in on their black stained faces, recorded their daily rituals and
photographed the dangerous work with which they earned their bread.

Yoshikazu Shinzato recalls accompanying Daido Moriyama to Okinawa in 2013 (the renowned

publication accompanies the exhibition Endless Works N/S at the Okinawa Prefectural Museum
& Art Museum. It comprises two books of photography: one of black-and-white work from the
1970s in Hokkaido (N, or North), and one of colour photos from 2013 in Okinawa (S, or South),

Daido Moriyama - Record No. 24

Daido Moriyama here recounts his ponderings about what exactly a snap actually is, and what it
means for defining his methods of taking pictures and, in the end, himself as a photographer. In
conclusion, he sees himself as snapping up all kinds of views of all manner of people and scenes
he encounters on the streets. The issue features what he refers to as street snaps mostly taken
in southern France, including cities such as Arles, Avignon, Marseille and Paris. It was the hot
summer month of July, and Moriyama fondly recalls endless fields of sunflowers, the sparkling
Mediterranean Sea, and meeting with photographer Sarah Moon.

Pb 21x28cm 148pp 100ills 38
When reading William Faulkners A Light in August for the first time, Daido Moriyama was struck
by the phenomenon of being enveloped and dazzled by an exquisite, spiritual kind of light that
wraps a fictional place. It remains one of his favourite books. Moriyama visited Okinawa for the
first time in 1974, and for some reason kept sensing that very same dazzling light a
physiological sensation which has since engraved itself on his memory and returns each time he
visits the islands. In this issue, Moriyama presents his vision of Okinawas extraordinary light from
his visit in 2013.

Most of the photographs featured in this edition were taken in the streets of Ikebukuro (Toshima,
Tokyo) and adjacent areas. Having usually dedicated the bulk of his daily activities to Shinjuku,
Daido Moriyama never gave much thought to Ikebukuro, or even bothered to go there, until ten
years ago when he moved into a flat in the area. But it was only recently, in 2013, that his interest
in this area of the city was truly sparked by a chance picture he made. The images presented
here are the result of Moriyamas prowling around his home turf for more than a year.

Chrissy Piper - Where The Day Takes You

J&L 2014 ISBN 9780989531122 Acqn 23913
Hb 26x20cm 48pp 30col ills 21
There are eight million stories in the naked city, says the narrator in Jules Dassins 1948 noir
classic Naked City. This sense of the bustling American metropolis as a vast reservoir of
untapped stories has moved numerous photographers to surf the urban sprawl with an openended attention to chance encounters and unexpected visual serendipities. After watching the
documentary film A Fire in the East: A Portrait of Robert Frank in the early 1990s, Los Angeles
based photographer Chrissy Piper wrote a fan letter to Frank, and travelled to New York to meet
him. Franks work and their eventual friendship inspired Piper to continue shooting on the street.
The pictures gathered in this book were taken mostly on the streets of New York City, but also in
other locales across America, during various road trips with friends.

C3 2014 ISBN 9788997775026 Acqn 24494
Pb 27x36cm 176pp 80ills 50col 60
For several years, architectural photographer JongOh Kim has focused his lens on MoHeon and
SaYaWon. Taking photos of the two gardens was like going through a very special ritual. He felt
like he was walking into a pristine world, away from the city full of people and the by-products of
civilization. Each moment overwhelmed him with admiration and appreciation. Each image is a
reflection not only of the precious moment when he was standing there, but also the emotion he
experienced at that very moment. Neither enchanting details nor special techniques seem to have
been applied to the garden of MoHeon. However, it has come to embrace all in nature full of
simplicity and depth, and with distinctive four season changes.
Kims photos will lead us to a calm and comfortable journey to the two humble gardens, soothing
our emotions and setting aside eye-catching sensationalism.
