The first World Retail Congress

Africa was a success!
Bringing together over 270 high level international retail
stakeholders for two days in Johannesburg, it was the meeting
of the year for shaping and defining the future of the rapidly
changing and diversifying retail marketplaces across Africa.
The unprecedented support and presence from international
and regional retailers like Woolworths, Pick N Pay, Coca-Cola,
Google, Choppies, Nakumatt, Zando, Jumia and many more
was integral to the atmosphere of networking and learning at
the Congress. Africa is the retail growth market of the future
with still unexploited opportunities for first-movers.

As we look ahead to 2014, the World Retail Congress

Africa will build on this success, providing deeper insight
into the African retail opportunities and challenges. The
Congress will demonstrate the latest growth strategies and
technologies supporting regional and international retailers
in their plans and offering the highest level of networking
and business opportunities.
We would like to thank all our speakers, Advisory Board
members, delegates, sponsors, exhibitors and members of
the press for their support. We look forward to working with
you and all our other partners and stakeholders towards a
greater success in 2014.
Kind regards,
Sanjay Singh, Commercial Director, World Retail Congress

The Voice of the industry

What future trends are you keeping an eye on?
The two big future trends within the retail sector are urbanization
and mobile commerce. Both trends are closely connected with
each other. Due to the increasing urbanization, it will be possible
to determine deliveries to customers within a few hours. At the
same time mobile technology allows total ubiquity, delivering
goods to the customers - no matter where they are.
Jeremy Hodara, the founder and managing director of Jumias
parent company Africa Internet Holdings
What is your favourite African retail related statistic?
According to our own calculations and estimates, the city with
the highest retail sales per square kilometre in Africa is Lagos
in Nigeria. Many would expect this to be Johannesburg or Cape
Town, but the very high population density in Lagos more than
compensates for the lower income levels found there. Such
statistics are very relevant to retailers planning to open stores
in regions with low car ownership rates. What would be great
to have from Sub-Saharan Africa is reliable government statistics,
but there continues to be a lack of data which has forced us
to develop our own econometric model. Its an exciting area
to work in.

Raymond Ackerman
Chairman
Pick n Pay
Receiving his Lifetime
Achievement Award

Raymond Ackerman founded the Pick N Pay Group,

a supermarket chain with 870 stores in South Africa,
Zimbabwe and Australia.
Mr Ackerman built a strong reputation as a consumer
champion, fighting supplier cartels in bread, petrol, cigarettes
and many other industries. The Ackerman Family Educational
Trust supports university education for about 60 students and
aids the mentally and physically disabled.
This and many more reasons led the World Retail Congress
Africa Advisory Board to all unanimously agree Mr Ackerman
should receive the inaugural World Retail Congress Africa
Lifetime Achievement Award. Recognised as an outstanding
leader, Mr Ackerman has been integral in driving change,
innovation and growth with inspirational vision for Africa.
Mr Ackerman still believes in the concept of giving as being
central to doing business. He added that retailers have to think
about their customers first ahead of profits. In that way he said
you always have the interests of your consumers at heart.
World Retail Congress Africa would like to congratulate
Mr Ackerman again for his contribution to the industry.
