Gray, Bowser attend Trans Day of Remembrance

Annual tribute honors
those slain due to
gender identity
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and Mayorelect Muriel Bowser were among
more than 250 people who packed
the Metropolitan Community Church
of Washington last Thursday for the
citys annual Transgender Day of
Remembrance gathering.
The event, which honors those
who have been murdered or injured
because of their gender identity and
expression in the U.S. and abroad, drew
the largest attendance since the annual
gathering started in D.C. seven years
ago, according to transgender advocate
Earline Budd, one of the organizers of
the event.
Also among those attending were D.C.
Police Chief Cathy Lanier, City Council
member David Grosso (I-At-Large), and
Human Rights Campaign President Chad
Grin. A letter was read from President
Obama sending solemn greetings to
all those observing Transgender Day of
Remembrance on Nov. 20.
What began in 1998 as a memorial to
the murder of transgender woman Rita
Hester in Allston, Mass., has grown in the
ensuing years to an international day of
action that in 2013 was observed in more
than 200 cities throughout the word,
organizers of the event have said.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance
occurs annually on Nov. 20 to honor
those who have been murdered because
of transphobia and those who have
survived gender-based violence, a
statement released by organizers of the
D.C. event says.
The overarching goal is to bring
attention to the continued violence
endured by the transgender community
with the hope that together we can
end such violence and intolerance, the
statement says.
We think it went really well, Budd told
the Washington Blade after the event. I
think what made it so interesting to so
many people in the audience was it was
the rst time weve ever had a sitting
mayor, an incoming mayor and the police
chief at the same time.
Budd said organizers were thankful
that the number of murders of
transgender people in the nations capital
has decreased in recent years, with no
trans murders recorded so far this year.
But she noted that D.C. police crime
reports show the number of assaults,
including sexual assaults and robberies
targeting transgender women in the city

have increased in the past few years.

Statistics released by D.C. police for
the first half of 2014 show a 14 percent
decrease in the total number of hate
crimes compared to the first half of
2013. However, hate crimes targeting
transgender residents increased during
that same period by 13 percent, the
police figures show. The figures also
show that 20 percent of hate crimes
reported during that period were
based on the victims gender identity
or gender expression.
Gray, who has been credited with doing
more to advance non-discrimination
policies for the transgender community
than any U.S. mayor, received a prolonged
standing ovation when introduced by
transgender activist Jeri Hughes.
What were really doing is bringing
dignity and respect, Gray told the
gathering. It is creating an opportunity
for everybody who lives in the city.
People should not be disadvantaged by
their sexual orientation, the geography
in which they live, by their [gender]
identity or any other insignicant way of
determining who people are, he said.
Bowser, who beat Gray in the citys April
1 Democratic primary before winning
the general election on Nov. 4, praised
Gray for his record of implementing
policies promoting equality for the LGBT
community, including the transgender
community.
Im honored to share the podium
with Mayor Vince Gray, Bowser told a
cheering crowd in an appearance that
wasnt scheduled.

Lesbian gets 8 years in D.C.

domestic violence case
A 25-year-old D.C. woman who pled guilty to stabbing her girlfriend 14 times
on a street in Southeast Washington in August was sentenced on Nov. 20 to
eight years in jail.
In addition to the prison sentence, D.C. Superior Court Judge Robert E. Morin
also sentenced Maya Shelia Moore to ve years of supervised release upon
completion of her prison term.
A police arrest adavit says D.C. police ocers arriving at the scene of the
stabbing appear to have saved the victims life by quickly placing a makeshift
tourniquet on her right thigh, which was spurting blood. Had the ocers not
taken that action the victim likely would have bled to death before the arrival of
emergency medical personnel, the adavit says.
Police and prosecutors initially charged Moore with assault with intent to kill
while armed. As part of a plea bargain arrangement reached in September, the
U.S. Attorneys Oce lowered the charge to aggravated assault while armed in
exchange for Moores agreement to plead guilty.
As part of the agreement prosecutors recommended to the court that Moore
be given the eight-year prison sentence along with the ve-year supervised
release requirement. The charge of aggravated assault while armed carries a
possible maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.
The police adavit says Moore and the victim had been in a romantic
relationship for at least two years. Court records show that Moore had been
arrested for allegedly assaulting the same victim, her girlfriend, in two separate
incidents, one in June of this year and the other in September 2013.
Unfortunately, statistically speaking, it often takes a victim multiple times
to leave an abusive relationship, said June Crenshaw, chair of the board for
Rainbow Response Coalition, a D.C.-based group that promotes public education
on LGBT-related domestic violence.
And so this particular incident is not an isolated incident, Crenshaw told
the Washington Blade in September at the time Moore pled guilty in the case.
Unfortunately, these types of situations occur far too often.

Hogan adviser compared gays to pedophiles, serial killers

A member of Maryland Gov.-elect Larry Hogans transition team in a 2006
newspaper column compared gays to pedophiles and serial killers.
The homosexual lobby is desperately and relentlessly trying to parlay the
publics tolerance into the acceptance of homosexuality as normal, wrote Blair
Lee in a column that ran in the Gazette newspapers on June 23, 2006. After all, if
God made homosexuals then homosexuality must be normal, right? Sorry, just
because God created you doesnt mean youre normal. God created pedophiles
and serial killers, too.
Lee made the comparison in response to then-Gov. Bob Ehrlichs decision to
remove Bob Smith from the Metro board after describing gay men as persons of
sexual deviancy during a talk show segment on marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Lee wrote in his column that then-state Del. Rich Madaleno (D-Montgomery
County), whom he described as a homosexual activist, saw the segment and
sent a tape of it to gay D.C. Council member Jim Graham.
Lee said that Graham, who is also a member of the Metro board at the time,
decided to ambush Smith at the next Metro board meeting.
He tipped o the press, issued an embargoed statement and then, in the
middle of a budget discussion, demanded that Smith either disavow his
comments or resign from the board, wrote Lee.
Lee said that Ehrlich cut Smith loose amid a tricky re-election year during
which he was besieged daily by a hostile, biased media.
Lee, a Montgomery County Democrat who is board chair of the Lee Development
Group in Silver Spring, is the son of former Acting Gov. Blair Lee, III.
He described gay sex as a mortal sin in an Oct. 26, 2012, column that
urged residents to vote against Marylands same-sex marriage law in a
referendum.Voters a week later upheld the statute.
Just last week, Lee defended his 2012 comments during a telephone interview
with the Washington Blade.

obituary

Danny Williams, 62
Danny Williams, a well-known comedian and AIDS activist who entertained
for more than 20 years on RSVP Cruises, died Nov. 4 at a Maryland hospital
according to his husband, Brian Moser. Williams was 62 and succumbed to a
staph infection though he had been struggling with health problems since 2012
when he went on disability.
Having lived many years in San Francisco, Williams, a hospital manager at UCSF
Medical Center, started doing stand-up comedy in 1982 on his 30th birthday
when he participated in an open mic event. For a time, he continued his day job
and visited AIDS patients in the hospital while also participating in hundreds of
charity fundraisers all over the country, Moser said. In 1986, he quit hospital
work to focus on comedy full time.
In 1989, he started working for RSVP Cruises, known for its gay clientele. He
entertained on board hosting costume parties, pool parties and gay spoofs of
shows like The Dating Game and Newlywed Game.
Williams was born in New Orleans on Oct. 23, 1952 and spent part of his early
years in Phoenix where his family relocated. He moved to San Francisco at age 18,
Moser said. His religious parents sent him to a mental institution at 17 to try to
cure him of being gay, an ordeal he later used in a one-man show called 1970.
Williams and Moser met on an RSVP Cruise in 1995. The next year, Moser
moved from Washington to San Francisco to be with Williams. They registered as
domestic partners in 1998 and had additional ceremonies in 2003 and 2008 as
California law allowed. They lived for a time in Palm Springs in 2000 and moved
to the D.C. area in January this year where Williams continued his comedy work
even performing at DAR Constitution Hall in March.
In addition to Moser, Williams is survived by his aunt Catherina Patricia
Williams, and niece, Shannon Hedlund; sister-in-law Lisa Roja and her husband,
Michael Roja; Mosers sisters, Toni Roja and Diona Roja; and many nieces and
nephews and extended family members. Williams is also survived by friends
Tracey Brandon, Tom Harvey, Don Fenwick, Johnny and Jerry Hedges, Bob
Grinchuck, and Reuel Olin.
A memorial service will be held in San Francisco Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at Beatbox,
314 11th St. A reception will immediately follow at the 440 bar, 440 Castro St.
Donations at the memorial and reception will benet AEF and the Positive
Resource Center, two of Williams favorite charities.

Lesbian lawmakers land House

leadership posts in Maryland
Kaiser named majority
leader; McIntosh to
chair appropriations
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
Maryland House Speaker Michael
Busch (D-Anne Arundel County) has
appointed a lesbian delegate from
Montgomery County as his chambers
next majority leader.
Busch in a Nov. 19 press release
described state Del. Anne Kaiser
(D-Montgomery
County)
as
an
instrumental member of the House
Ways and Means Committee that she
joined in 2003. The Montgomery County
Democrat since 2007 has also chaired the
House Education Subcommittee.
Anne Kaiser has worked tirelessly
for the House Democratic Caucus and
demonstrated leadership capabilities on
crucial legislative priorities, said Busch.
Busch was not immediately available
for comment.
Im really excited to be oered the
position of majority leader and am
pleased that the speaker has faith in
my leadership abilities, Kaiser told the
Washington Blade on Monday.
Kaiser, 46, has represented House
District 14 in the Maryland House of
Delegates since 2003.
The Montgomery County Democrat
the following year came out during her
testimony in support of a bill that sought
to allow gay and lesbian Marylanders
to make medical decisions on behalf of
their partners. Kaiser will be among the
six openly gay members of the General
Assembly whenit reconvenes in January.
Kaiser told the Blade she is cautiously
optimistic about working with Gov.-elect
Larry Hogan, even though she said she
and other lawmakers have yet to meet
with him.
The Republican stressed during his
campaign against Lieutenant Gov.
Anthony Brown that he would not seek
to repeal the states same-sex marriage
law that voters approved in a 2012
referendum. Hogan told the Baltimore
Sun ahead of the June primary he
opposes Marylands transgender rights
law that took eect on Oct. 1.
I hope its a good working relationship,
Kaiser told the Blade.
Kaiser during the interview also
weighed in on the growing controversy
surrounding Hogans decision to appoint
Montgomery County Democrat Blair Lee
to his transition team.

newspapers, in 2006 compared gays

Its disappointing that his voice is being
elevated, but hes only one voice, Kaiser
told the Blade.
Busch on Nov. 19 also announced that
Del. Maggie McIntosh, who represents
portions of Baltimore City, will chair the
House Appropriations Committee.
Maggie McIntosh is one of the most
well respected leaders in Annapolis and
I have total condence in her ability to
manage the myriad of subjects that fall
within the jurisdiction of the committee,
most importantly legislative review and
oversight of the states annual budget,
said Busch. She is the right person to take
the lead on budget issues as we continue
to provide critical services to the citizens
of our state and to use our resources to
foster a growing economy.
Carrie Evans, executive director

The promotion of two lesbians

LGBT groups assail decision in Ferguson shooting

FERGUSON, Mo. LGBT advocacy

Human Rights Campaign President

Michael Browns family and the
American people deserve to have this

The shooting sparked widespread protests in the predominantly black St.

Dismissal of hate crime conviction upheld in N.Y.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. The New York State Court of Appeals has upheld a lower
courts ruling that overturned the hate crime conviction of a man accused of
killing a transgender woman in 2008.
The Syracuse Post-Standard on Nov. 24 reported the states highest court
ruled that Onondaga County prosecutors can retry Dwight DeLee on the hate
crime charge in connection with Lateisha Teish Greens murder.
Prosecutors contend DeLee shot Green outside a Syracuse house party in
November 2008.
DeLee in 2009 was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime. The verdict
is the rst time a New York jury found a defendant guilty of a fatal hate crime
against a trans person.
A New York appellate court in July 2013 overturned DeLees conviction, arguing
the jurys verdict was inconsistent.
Lateisha Green was singled out and killed simply because she was
transgender, said Michael Silverman, executive director of the Transgender
Legal Defense and Education Fund, which represents Greens family. Dwight
DeLees conviction brought a measure of justice to Teishs family and friends. In
light of todays ruling, we urge the Onondaga County District Attorney to bring
new hate crime charges against DeLee.

Calif. Chick-l-A hosts LGBT fundraiser

LOS ANGELES A Hollywood Chick-l-A on Nov. 22 hosted a fundraiser for an

it coordinated with the Stand Up Foundation on its website.
The Hollywood Chick-l-A store came to us and wanted to do something

LGBT rights advocates in 2012 sharply criticized Chick-l-A after Dan Cathy,

Is there hope for McConnell,

despite anti-LGBT record?
Lawmaker once faced
questions about his own
sexual orientation
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
Mitch McConnell has a record on LGBT
issues that could accuratelybe described
as dismal, but that isnt stopping LGBT
groups from extending an olive branch in
hopes hell work with them in his role as
majority leaderof the U.S. Senate.
Last week, the Senate Republican
caucus unanimous voted to elect
McConnell as Senate majority leader
when they assume control of the chamber
at the start of the 114th Congress.
Weve assembled a great leadership
team that will focus on getting the Senate
working again, and passing legislation to
help create jobs, improve the economy
and continue moving our nation towards
energy
independence,
McConnell
said in his statement. We are eager to
work towards bipartisan agreements
and to implement real legislative
accomplishments.
What
these
real
legislative
accomplishments will be remains to be
seen. LGBT advocates will likely be pushing
for a comprehensive non-discrimination
bill with protections in employment,
housing, credit, education, federal
programs and public accommodations,
while anti-gay groups may push religious
liberty legislation to provide carve-outs in
civil rights law for people and businesses
objecting to same-sex marriage.
Groups that work on LGBT issues say
the extent to which theyve met with
McConnell has been minimal in the eight
years that hes led the Republican caucus
in the minority.
Chris Hartman, executive director of
Fairness Kentucky, said his organization
met once with McConnell staers in 2011
for about 30 minutes on the Employment
Non-Discrimination Act.
We were hoping the senator would
respond to his constituencys desires,
which is to have legal discrimination
protection for LGBT people, but, of course,
he has not done so, Hartman said.
Hartman said his group hasnt made
an attempt to meet with staers beyond
that initial meeting, but, by casting a vote
against ENDA last year, added the senator
has been clear on his stance toward nondiscrimination protections.
I hope that hell soften his stance on
the Employment Non-Discrimination
Act, Hartman said. The simple anti-

Sen. MITCH MCCONNELL (R-Ky.) is the new

discrimination law is bipartisan; there

are supporters on both sides of the aisle.
In Kentucky, 77 percent of registered
Republicans support anti-discrimination
protections. Theres no reason the
senator shouldnt be leading the nation
toward greater and fuller acceptance of
all people, and especially Kentuckians
who lack those protections.
Gregory T. Angelo, executive director
of Log Cabin Republicans, said interaction
between his organization and McConnells
oce has been minimal because
previously Democrats have controlled the
Senate, but he expects that to change.
Any communication with his oce will
only occur after gay advocates and allies
achieve some form of consensus on ENDA
or similar civil rights legislation, as I would
not want to present mixed messages on this
critical issue given the importance of GOP
support in any potential vote, Angelo said.
Don
Stewart,
a
McConnell
spokesperson, said he doesnt handle the
senators scheduling, but his oce has
had regular meetings with Kentuckians
representing the LGBT community.
McConnell scored a 0 on the Human
Rights Campaigns legislative scorecard for
the 113th Congress. Some highlights over
his career in the Senate: Voting in favor
of the Federal Marriage Amendment and
against hate crimes protection legislation,
Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal and the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
Given his record, one question that has
emerged is whether McConnell will bring
up anti-gay legislation now that he sets
the schedule for the Senate oor.
Hartman said he thinks that would be
unlikely given Republican reluctance to take
on such issues in recent years when they
were in charge of one-half of Congress.

Hagel leaves pro-LGBT

legacy at Pentagon
Review of open trans
service remains undone
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
The announcement that Defense
Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down
came as a surprise on Monday for many
political observers, asadvocates praised his
eorts on behalf of LGBT service members.
In a brief, ve-minute speech at the
State Dining Room of the White House
speaking between President Obama
and Vice President Joseph Biden, Hagel
announced his intention to resign after
serving less than two years as head of the
Defense Department.
You should know I did not make this
decision lightly, Hagel said. But after
much discussion, the president and I
agreed that now was the right time for
new leadership here at the Pentagon.
Speculation has swirled about the
reasons for the early exit, though Hagel
will stay in his role until the U.S. Senate
conrms a replacement.
Although Obama called him an
exemplary defense secretary, media
reports say he clashed with National Security
Adviser Susan Rice and was frustrated with
Obamas unwillingness to make a stronger
push for defense spending. White House
Press Secretary Josh Earnest noted during
the news brieng Monday that Hagel was
conrmed when the Islamic State of Iraq
& Syria was less of a threat; his departure
presents a new opportunity for leadership
in that conict.
Hagel came into the oce of defense
secretary after the lifting of Dont Ask,

Hagel took inclusion of gay, lesbian and

workers at the Pentagon a step further by
ensuring recognition of their relationships
for the purposes of military benets.
In 2013, Hagel was the rst member
of President Obamas Cabinet to issue a
statement upon the U.S. Supreme Courts
ruling against the Defense of Marriage

health and pension benets previously
denied to the spouses of service members
would begin to ow to those couples.
That is now the law and it is the right

their qualications to do so. Todays ruling

When Hagel put teeth into that plan by

Cuba has come a long way on LGBT rights

Mariela Castro accused of
manipulating advocates
By MICHAEL K. LAVERS
mlavers@washblade.com
MEXICO CITY More than a dozen
Cuban LGBT rights advocates on the
morning of Oct. 30 were huddled on the
oor along the wall of a large ballroom of a
Mexico City hotel during the International
Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans and Intersex
Associations biennial global conference.
The activists wearing white T-shirts
that highlighted Cubas participation in the
International Day Against Homophobia
and Transphobia earlier this year were
nalizing their presentation in support of
their countrys bid to host the 2016 ILGA
World Conference. They quickly walked to
the front of the room once LGBT advocates
from the African country of Botswana
nished their own presentation.
A lesbian and transgender woman
held a large Cuban ag at the front of
the ballroom as Manuel Vzquez Seijido
and Yasmany Daz Figueroa spoke
from the podium. Their presentation
included a slideshow with pictures of
hotels in Havana, the Cuban capital, and
videos of events associated with the
International Day Against Homophobia
and Transphobia.
Several of the activists passed out

many members of the audience clapped
and cheered Cuba. Daz even noted
during the presentation that Cuban
doctors have traveled to West Africa to
help combat the Ebola epidemic.
[The ILGA conference] would be a
good thing for all sectors, said Daz.
Delegates

to host the biennial gathering in 2016,
but the activists bid underscores the
progress that many feel Cuba has made

in extending rights to its LGBT citizens

over the last decade.
Mariela Castro seen as champion of
LGBT rights
Supporters of Mariela Castro Espn,
daughter of Cuban President Ral Castro
who directs the countrys National Center
for Sexual Education (CENESEX), maintain
she has spearheaded a number of proLGBT initiatives in recent years. These
include a condom distribution campaign
and prompting the countrys national
health care system to oer free sexreassignment surgery to trans Cubans.
Mariela Castro was president of the
local committee that organized an ILGA
conference in May that drew hundreds of
LGBT rights advocates from Latin America
and the Caribbean to Havana and the
beach resort of Varadero.
Mariela Castro, who is a member of
the Cuban Parliament, late last year
voted against a proposal to add sexual
orientation to the countrys labor law
because it did not include trans-specic
protections. She has also publicly backed
marriage rights for same-sex couples on
the Communist island.
Isel Calzadilla Acosta, coordinator of
the Network of Lesbian and Bisexual
Women in the city of Santiago de Cuba
in the eastern part of the country, during
an interview with the Washington Blade
at the ILGA World Conference praised
what she described as Mariela Castros

advocacy on behalf of LGBT Cubans.

Calzadilla said her organization formed
in 2003 in response to Mariela Castro
reaching out to local activists to work for
CENESEX.
We have seen many advances,
Calzadilla told the Blade. CENESEX
supports us with capacity building and
with events and we attribute everything
that we are doing to them because we
have a voice with Mariela Castro.
Argelia Fellov Hernndez of the
Network of Lesbian and Bisexual
Women in Havana agreed, noting
Cubas gay-inclusive labor law and
events that commemorated the annual
International Day Against Homophobia
and Transphobia.
Our island has come a long way
in recent years, compared to many
countries around Cuba, Fellov told the
Blade during an interview at the ILGA
World Conference in Mexico City.
Mariela Castro took part in a legislative
panel during the ILGA World Conference.
She did not respond to the Blades
repeated requests for an interview while
in Mexico City.
Mariela Castros eorts stand in stark

Obamas immigration action not enough for some

267,000 LGBT
undocumented immigrants
excluded from order: claim
By CHRIS JOHNSON
cjohnson@washblade.com
President Obama inspired reactions
from one extreme to the other last week
over the executive action he announced
on immigration, but the sentiment
expressed by many LGBT groups is
somewhere in the middle.
In a 15-minute speech delivered in the
East Room of the White House, Obama
announced his administration will take
action on its own because Congress
has refused to act on comprehensive
immigration reform legislation.
I continue to believe that the best
way to solve this problem is by working
together to pass that kind of common
sense law, Obama said. But until that
happens, there are actions I have the legal
authority to take as president the same
kinds of actions taken by Democratic and

Republican presidents before me that

will help make our immigration system
more fair and more just.
As outlined by Obama, his action
consists of three major components:
1) providing additional resources at
the border to stem the ow of illegal
crossings; 2) making it easier for highskilled immigrants to stay in the United
States and contribute to our economy;
and 3) allowing relief for deportation to
millions of undocumented immigrants
who already live in the country.
The third prong of his plan, and the
most contentious, will allow an estimated
5 million undocumented immigrants
to live in the country temporarily upon
registration without fear of deportation,
provided theyve been in the United State
for more than ve years; have children
who are American citizens or legal
residents; pass a criminal background
check; and pay taxes.
Obama
insisted
Congress
must
act to make adequate changes to the
countrys immigration system. The U.S.
Senate last year passed a compromise

bill with bipartisan support that would

enhance border security and provide
undocumented immigrants in the United
States a path toward citizenship, but the
House never took action on the legislation.
I want to work with both parties
to pass a more permanent legislative
solution, Obama said. And the day I
sign that bill into law, the actions I take
will no longer be necessary. Meanwhile,
dont let a disagreement over a single
issue be a deal breaker on every issue.
Thats not how our democracy works, and
Congress certainly shouldnt shut down
our government again just because we
disagree on this.
Legislative action will be a tall order now
that Republicans will soon control both
chambers of Congress following their wins
on Election Day and House Speaker John
Boehner (R-Ohio) has already accused
Obama of poisoning the well.
In a video message just before Obamas
speech, Boehner suggested Obama was
taking action outside of his authority
by changing the way hes enforcing
immigration law.

Instead of working together to x

our broken immigration system, the
president says hes acting on his own,
Boehner said. Thats just not how our
democracy works. The president has
said before that hes not king and hes
not an emperor, but hes sure acting like
one. And hes doing it at a time when the
American people want nothing more than
for us to work together.
But Obamas supporters in Congress
praised him and said the House should
follow his lead by passing legislation
before time runs out at the end of the
113th Congress.
Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), the only
out lesbian in Congress, said the refusal
of the House to take up immigration
legislation more the 500 days after action
by the Senate demonstrates the need for
executive action.
Given
the
fact
that
House
Republicans have failed to act on the
bipartisan Senate reform bill, they cant
expect the president to do nothing and
the president should not accept the
status quo, Baldwin said.

Udall staffers reect on Republican wave

with the senator since he took oce in

2009 and one junior member who
have worked with the senator on proLGBT initiatives.
In addition to Sozan, who works as chief
of sta for Udall, the staers are Jake
Swanton, legislative director; John Fossum,
administrative and systems director; and
David McCoy, a legislative aide.
Having one-seventh of the sta identify
as gay has earned Udalls Senate oce
the distinction of being one of the most
LGBT-friendly on Capitol HIll.
Swanton, 33, who helped drive LGBT
policy as part of his legislative work, said
that distinction is a source of competition
in some circles on Capitol Hill.
I think theres very friendly competition
among other Senate sta about who
has the gayest sta, Swanton said.
Obviously, it rotates because sta come
and sta go, but we have permanently
been up there in the highest spot or the
top three, I would say.
Its also a source of humor. According
to Sozan, Udall said during remarks at
a closed-door meeting with the Human
Rights Campaigns board of directors in
March 2011: Some of my staers tell me
that Im considered to have the gayest sta
on Capitol Hill. Im not sure exactly what
that means, but it sounds great to me.
Fossum, 39, said in his role managing
Udalls sta, that eorts were made to
include LGBT people, which is why the
oce procedures manual has a nondiscrimination policy inclusive of sexual
orientation and gender identity.
Its one of the few Senate oces that
has done that from the get-go, Fossum
said. When Mike and I were developing the
oce policy, it was reective of the senator,
of being accepting for all people regardless
of who they are. In some sense, its been
a non-issue because everyones welcome
and treated equally here, but its also a
reection of the senator on being a good
person willing to welcome all people.
A veteran of Capitol Hill, Fossum helped
found the Gay, Lesbian & Allies Senate
Sta Caucus, a decade ago when he was
working for Harry Reid. Calling that era a
scary time, Fossum noted the signicant
changes over the course of 10 years.
I was knocking on doors in 04 for the
Kerry-Edwards campaign, Fossum said.
And that was the era of the constitutional
amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
And to have that dramatic switch in a
decade is remarkable. I remember coming
out to my boss; I was working for Harry
Reid. And hes like, Its not a big deal. I
remember I was really nervous about it.
Udalls loss is being felt by staers
and LGBT supporters alike. The wide
consensus on the Hill is that any work

important to the LGBT community is

likely on hold now with Republicans in
charge. Udall stood out as a champion
of LGBT rights despite his reputation
as a moderate and constituency in the
purple state of Colorado.
McCoy, 29, said that work in part
compelled him to join Udalls oce, where
his portfolio consists of LGBT issues,
education, immigration and agriculture.
When I started looking into coming
to this oce, a lot of his work on LGBT
issuers really stood out to me, McCoy
said. I saw numerous statements and
press releases, so it denitely made it
a very exciting prospect to come join a
team and serve a member who has been
so forward thinking on these issues for
such a long time.
Shortly after taking oce in 2009,
Udall took alead role against Dont Ask,
Dont Tell. Calling on President Obama in
2009 to speed up the repeal process, the
senator voted for open service at each
opportunity in committee and on the
Senate oor.
Sozan, who served as Udalls point
person for eorts to repeal the law, recalled
the decision to take the lead on the issue
wasnt universally accepted among sta
because some deemed it risky for a new
senator from a purple state.
And to his credit, he heard that out and
said Im going to do it, anyway, because I
feel the country is catching up to where
it needs to be on this. Things are moving
forward, and the sign of a good leader is
someone whos willing to take a little bit
of risk, step out in front of something and
help galvanize public opinion, Sozan said.
So, he made a pretty calculated choice in
that instance to kind of ignore some of
the political advice he was getting about
what we would be the safest thing to do,
especially to set him up for re-election.
In 2011, Udall came out in support

of marriage equality, beating Obama to

the punch, and cosponsored legislation
to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act in
addition to celebrating the U.S. Supreme
Court ruling against the law.
In a video statement at that time, when
only six states had legalized same-sex
marriage, Udall said, I support marriage
equality. We have work to do. Lets go do it.
I think the way in which its unfolding
has lessons for all of us, Udall said.
Lets work in our states, lets work
with our neighbors, lets work with our
communities, lets work with our elected
ocials. And I have no doubt that well
soon reach marriage equality in states
and across the nation.
More recently, Udall has worked on
ensuring gay veterans living in nonmarriage equality states have access to
federal spousal benets guaranteed to
former members of the armed forces in
opposite-sex marriages.
After the ruling against DOMA, the
Obama administration extended benets
to gay married couples to the widest
extent possible, but determined current
law prohibits the ow of spousal veterans
benets to individuals in same-sex
marriages if they live in states without
marriage equality.
Udall has called on the administration
to reconsider that position, saying
refusing those benets violates the spirit
of the DOMA ruling, and in the meantime
he co-sponsored legislation to change
U.S. code to ensure gay veterans receive
equal benets.
The senator continues work on this
eort to make sure its done before he
leaves oce. Just last week, he had a
conversation about it with Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Swanton said.
Although hes optimistic, Swanton was
tight-lipped on the actual strategy, saying,
Theres a number of dierent avenues for

that, but were going to do it however we can.

Senator-elect Cory Gardner, who beat
Udall, is among the Republican politicians
who is less supportive of LGBT issues.
Having voted as a state legislator against
LGBT non-discrimination protections and
adoption rights for same-sex couples,
Gardner, a two-term U.S. House member,
earned a score of 0 on the Human Rights
Campaign congressional scorecard.
When marriage equality became legal
just last month in Colorado, the candidate
said the issue belongs to the courts and
we must honor their legal decisions, but
sought to change the subject.
While others might seek to divide
Coloradans, I will not do that, Gardner
said. Coloradans are tired of politicians
who spend all their time on partisan hotbutton issues that divide our state. We
need leaders who are focused on bringing
people together on the economic issues
that we all agree on.
Despite the views that Gardner has
articulated, Sozan said he can envision
Gardner becoming more supportive of
LGBT rights based on just a sense of
optimism.
In order to represent Colorado well
and to have longevity there, at the very
least you have to be able to have a
viewpoint that is not extremist in either
direction, Sozan said. I think that if the
new senator wants to be successful, hes
going to have to have some views that
are in line with where Coloradans are on
these issues, or I think there will be some
unhappiness with that.
The day-to-day work load for the
staers isnt for the feint of heart. Its
a 24/7 gig full of surprises with new
legislative work each day and responses
to the latest media coverage, which can
cripple a social life.

Howell and other LGBT activists

the rst time to the City Council in 1974.
Barrys strong pro-gay record prompted
most of the citys gay activists and rank
and le gays to support Barry in what
political observers considered a longshot
race for mayor in 1978.
Barry challenged then incumbent
Mayor Walter Washington, who won
election as the citys rst home rule

awarded the Whitman-Walker Clinic, which

Graham headed at the time, with a city
contract for AIDS-related services in August
1983, marking the rst time any U.S. mayor
had approved such a contract.
There was a lot of pressure on Barry
not to give it to Whitman-Walker, said
Graham, noting that other community
organizations with ties to neighborhoods
east of the Anacostia River were vying for
the contract.
And he decided that we were in the
best position on the merits and we should
get it, Graham said. And that was an act
of political courage at the time, and Ive
never, never forgotten what he did.
By 2009, 26 years after Barry awarded

or domestic partnership legislation. He
said he opposed same-sex marriage on
religious grounds.
Gay rights and Ward 8 community
activist Phil Pannell, who has known Barry
since the 1970s, said Barry made it clear
that he was reecting the wishes of his
constituents.
I think that was the one time when
Marion was acting as a thermometer
politically speaking rather than a
thermostat, Pannell said. He basically
voted the way he did against marriage
equality because he claimed the AfricanAmerican community in Ward 8 didnt
support it, particularly the ministers.

D.C. Mayor MARION BARRY, on right, was joined by D.C. Council members POLLY SCHAKLETON
(D-Ward 3) and H.R. CRAWFORD (D-At-Large) in signing a bill on April 15, 1986 requiring the city to
develop a comprehensive plan to address the AIDS epidemic.

Chair Sterling Tucker in the Democratic
primary. Washington and Tucker received
strong support from the citys majority
black political establishment.
But as it turned out, Washington
and Tucker split most of the black vote,
enabling Barry to win the election with
just 35 percent of the vote and with a
margin of less than 2,000 votes.
Barry acknowledged that his strong
support from LGBT voters and activists,
many of whom worked hard as volunteers
on his campaign, were a key component
in the coalition that enabled him to win by
a razor-thin margin.
Barry followed through by appointing
gays to all kinds of important positions
throughout the government, according
to Howell. He put us on the map
politically speaking, and he really led the
eld as far as any other mayor in the
country. Nobody was more pro-gay or did
more for us than Marion Barry did.
D.C. Council member Jim Graham, whos
gay, said Barry was a strong supporter of
the citys response to the AIDS epidemic
in the early 1980s. Graham said Barry

that rst contract to Whitman-Walker,

a new generation of LGBT activists
and LGBT city residents had little or no
institutional memory of Barrys record on
gay rights.
What they remember of Barry was his
strong opposition to a same-sex marriage
bill introduced into the Council in 2009 by
gay D.C. Council member David Catania
(I-At-Large) and which enjoyed the
support of all of Barrys colleagues on the
13-member Council except one Yvette
Alexander (D-Ward 7).
For many of the citys LGBT activists,
anger over Barrys opposition to the
same-sex marriage bill turned to outrage
later that year when Barry spoke at a rally
at Freedom Plaza organized by anti-gay
organizations calling for the Council to
defeat the marriage measure.
Among those joining Barry at the rally was
Rev. Harry Jackson, the anti-gay Maryland
minister who led the unsuccessful eort by
gay marriage opponents to place the citys
marriage equality law before the voters in a
referendum.
Barry argued that he favored providing
all of the rights and benets of marriage

drug possession related charge and

acquitted on a far more serious felony
count of perjury, a federal judge sentenced
Barry to six months in prison. Shortly after
being released from prison in April 1992,
Barry announced his candidacy for the
Ward 8 seat on City Council.
In what some activists called an ironic
twist of fate, Barrys return to city politics
had an immediate benecial impact on
the LGBT community. His enormous
popularity in Ward 8 enabled Barry
to easily defeat incumbent Democrat
Wilhelmina Rolark, the Councils last
remaining gay rights opponent.
For years Rolark, as chair of the Councils
Judiciary Committee, had blocked a bill

WASHINGTON BLADE ARCHIVE PHOTO BY DOUG HINCKLE

Added Pannell, I very publicly and

very passionately disagreed with him. I
pointed out that the mark of leadership is
to be in front of your people if you really
believe what youre advocating will lead
to progress for the people.
Long before the marriage issue
surfaced, many of Barrys longtime
supporters across the city, including LGBT
activists, expressed disappointment and
dismay in the late 1980s when signs of
Barrys struggle with drug and alcohol
abuse began to surface.
And like nearly all city residents, Barrys
gay supporters reacted with horror when
FBI agents arrested Barry on drug charges
in a sting operation in which Barry was
captured on video smoking crack from a
pipe in a room at the Vista International
Hotel on Thomas Circle in Northwest D.C.
The arrest came near the end of Barrys
third term as mayor. A short time later
he announced he would not run for a
fourth term, saying he planned to enter a
substance abuse rehabilitation program
to help nd a way to heal my body, mind
and soul.
After being convicted on a misdemeanor

to repeal the citys antiquated sodomy

law that made it a crime for consenting
adults to engage in oral or anal sex.
Although the law was rarely enforced
against consenting adults, LGBT activists
considered it one of the last vestiges of
anti-gay bias enshrined in D.C. law.
With Rolark no longer in a position
to block sodomy repeal legislation, the
Council quickly passed the repeal measure
in 1993 when the new Council session was
convened. Barry was among the Council
members to vote for the repeal bill.
As many political observers had
expected, Barry used his election to
the Council in 1992 as a springboard to
run for a fourth term as mayor in 1994.
In a development that surprised and
outraged many city residents, including
some gays, Barry won the primary and
the general election despite his criminal
record on a platform that he was best
qualied to turn around the citys serious
nancial problems that surfaced under
then incumbent Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly.

ran against Barry in the general election.

Schwartz hadreceived strong support from
the LGBT community in her Council races.
Barry beat Schwartz by a margin of 56
percent to 42 percent.
As the citys nances continued to
deteriorate in Barrys fourth term in
oce Congress passed legislation to
create a special nancial control board
to take control of the citys budget and
virtually all nancial operations. Sensing
what would most likely have been a
resounding defeat should he run for yet
another term, Barry chose not to seek reelection in 1998.
In 2004 Barry turned his sights once
again to the Council. In his role as
permanent favorite son of Ward 8, Barry
easily defeated incumbent Sandra Allen
(D-Ward 8) in the Democratic primary
and coasted to victory in the November
general election.
Barry continued to receive support
from most of the citys LGBT activists,
including the Gertrude Stein Democratic
Club, until he announced his opposition
to the same-sex marriage bill in 2009.
Since the Council approved the

Lesbian Activists Alliance, acknowledged

Barrys record of support for LGBT
equality but said Barrys opposition to
marriage equality cannot be dismissed as
insignicant.
Rosendall said he told Barry to his
face, Shame on you after Barry spoke
forcefully against the then pending
marriage equality bill at the 2009 anti-gay
rally in Freedom Plaza.
He replied, I supported you on
everything else, said Rosendall.
That did not mollify me, but it was
noteworthy that he and the only other
no vote on marriage, Ward 7 Council
member Yvette Alexander, touted their
pro-gay credentials from the dais rather
than launching into anti-gay screeds,
Rosendall said. That was a tribute to how
far the LGBT community had come.
Graham is among those who say
Barrys long record as a champion for the
poor and working-class citizens as well
as his overall record on LGBT equality
overshadows his opposition to the
marriage equality law.
Im overcome by emotion, Graham
told the Washington Blade on Sunday. I

turn the cheek, forgive and move forward

no matter the adversity, Bonds said
in a statement. He was a remarkable,
powerful, proud leader of people that will
be hard to forget.
Schwartz expressed a sentiment
shared by many who said they liked Barry
as a person and champion for the people
despite his shortcomings.
Marion personied D.C. and his
passing is a great loss to all of us, especially
those most in need whom he served so
well, Schwartz said in a statement. In
spite of his foibles and having run against
him, I loved and appreciated Marion
Barry Jr. and will miss him greatly. My
deepest sympathy goes out to his family,

most LGBT-supportive legislation.

Veteran transgender activist Earline Budd
called Barry a friendand inspiration to me
in the daily work that I do.
She said that while Barry wasnt seen
by everyone as an advocate for the
transgender community, he in his own
way wanted equality for all.
In statements released on Sunday,
Mayor Vincent Gray and Council Chair Phil
Mendelson (D-At-Large) said they would
work with Barrys family to arrange ocial
ceremonies to honor Barry, including an
expected lying in state ceremony at the
John Wilson Building.
Marion was not just a colleague but
also was a friend with whom I shared
many fond moments about governing the
city, Gray said. He loved the District of
Columbia and so many Washingtonians
loved him.
Council member Anita Bonds (D-AtLarge), who worked as one of Barrys highlevel mayoral aides, said Barry should
also be remembered for his early years
as an accomplished civil rights activist in
the 1960s.
Ill remember him for his capacity to

especially his son Christopher.

Pannell said he clearly comes down
on the side of believing Barrys legacy on
LGBT issues is that of a strong supporter
and friend of the LGBT community.
I was profoundly hurt when he didnt
support marriage equality, said Pannell.
But Marion admitted that he was wrong
and then said he wanted to marry a
same-sex couple in Ward 8 when the City
Council amendment made that possible.
Pannell said he was moved when Barry
invited him to dinner last month after
the two attended a mayoral candidates
forum sponsored by the American
Association of Retired People.
We were the only two people from
Ward 8. And he called me over and said
he wanted to talk to me, said Pannell,
who told of how Barry directed his driver
to take them to a downtown restaurant
where the two reminisced about their
years of work on Ward 8 issues.
He was very frail, Pannell recounted.
Marion said God meant for this to
happen. We should have been doing this
for years. And then he told me it was the
best conversation he had in a long time.

how Pride was handled in the past and
how people see its future.
Pride has been in existence in Baltimore
since 1975, and the GLCCB has been
running the annual event since 1977. As
such, organizers are billing the upcoming
Pride as the 40th anniversary. At the
meeting, the GLCCBs new executive

volunteer Pride Coordinator Paul Liller, who

previously worked for Pride and the GLCCB

in various capacities from 2007-2009.
No date for the 2015 event has been set
nor has the location been nalized. After
protests from a segment of Baltimores
LGBT community were leveled at the
GLCCB last year for Prides move from
its customary venue in the heart of

organizers are considering another
move. The decision will rest largely with
city ocials who issue permits including

Baltimore receives
perfect score from HRC
The Human Rights Campaign last week
released the ndings of a study that
showed Baltimore was among 39 cities
that received the highest marks when it
comes to equality for its LGBT population.
The Municipal Equality Index (MEI) rates
353 municipalities drawn from every state
in the nation on the basis of how inclusive
their laws and policies are concerning
LGBT people. Last year, Baltimore also
received a perfect score as did 24 other
municipalities.
Cities are rated on a scale of 0-100,
based on the citys laws, policies, benets,
services and relationships between the
citys leaders and the LGBT community.

Md. Medicaid to
expand trans coverage
Marylands Medicaid Coverage Policy
Advisory Committee recommended that
Marylands Medicaid coverage be updated
to provide transgender-inclusive health
coverage for all participants in Marylands
Medical Assistance (Medicaid) program.
The program is the primary source of
health insurance coverage for low-income
adults, families and children in the state.
The updated plan will provide coverage
for medically necessary comprehensive
services for gender transition.
This development follows the states
decision in July 2014, as part of a
settlement with FreeState Legal, to
similarly update the health benets
coverage for state employees and their
beneciaries.
Removal of these outdated Medicaid
regulations is particularly important for
low-income transgender Marylanders,
who in many cases have no access to
medically necessary health care other
than through the Medicaid program,
said Jer Welter, managing attorney of
FreeState Legal.

Gays fare well under Obamacare

WASHINGTON Implementation
of the Aordable Care Act has had
a drastic impact on the number of
LGBT U.S. residents who are insured,
Think Progress reports citing its new
Center for American Progress study,
which found that the uninsured
rate for LGBT people who make less
than $44,000 per year fell from 34
to 26 percent, a greater rate than in
the general population where the
uninsured rate dropped from 27 to
20 percent.
Obamacare particularly impacted
those with lower incomes, Think
Progress reports. Among LGBT
individuals who make between
$15,000 and $22,000, the uninsured
rate declined by 18 percentage points,

in uninsured rates, from 29 to 27
percent. Transgender people saw
a dramatic 24 percent drop, but the uninsured rate among that community
remains quite high at 35 percent, Think Progress reports.
According to the report, discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
and gender identity is still a signicant barrier to LGBT people obtaining health
insurance coverage. Because no federal law exists to protect LGBT people
from employment discrimination, many take low-wage jobs that do not include
insurance benets. Marriage inequality also limits LGBT individuals ability to
access coverage through a spouse or partner. Only 38 percent of LGBT people in
the studied income bracket had insurance through a partner benet, compared
to 58 percent of the general population, the article said.
LGBT people also experience discrimination from insurance carriers
themselves. The Center for American Progress report found that 8 percent of
gay respondents experienced discrimination through a carrier, and another
8 percent struggled to obtain coverage because of a pre-existing condition,
including a signicant number who were denied coverage because of their
HIV status.

LGBT nursing organization forms

CHICAGO An organization of gay and lesbian physicians has formed the
rst-ever association for LGBT nurses, the Windy City Times reports.
GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality formerly known as the
Gay and Lesbian Medical Association now has a sister agency dubbed GLMA
Nursing Section, created for gay nurses to provide a focal point for advocacy on
LGBT nursing issues, the Times reports
GLMA, formed in 1981 in response to AIDS, is the worlds largest and oldest
association of LGBT health care professionals. The nursing group was formed in
August, the Times reports.
The mission of GLMA is to ensure equality in health care for LGBT individuals
and health care providers, the Windy City Times quoted Hector Vargas, GLMA
executive director, as having said. We achieve our mission through four areas
of work: patient education and referrals, professional education, policy and
advocacy and the promotion of research. Over the past 30-plus years, GLMAs
mission has expanded beyond just HIV/AIDS to include the broad array of health
disparities the LGBT community faces. Additionally, GLMAs membership has
expanded beyond just physicians to include nurses, social workers, counselors,
dentists and other health professionals.
The genesis of the GLMA Nursing Section began in 2013 at the GLMA LGBT
Nursing Summit.

One holiday down, several more to go.

Hows your waistline holding up?
Temptation abounds this time of year
with all our favorite treats lled with
sugar, butter, carbohydrates and heavy
creams. From cookies, cakes and pies
to mashed potatoes and casseroles, our
holiday favorites pack on the calories and
the pounds.
During the holiday season, the average
American gains ve-10 pounds. Instead
of feeling guilty or denying yourself
altogether, here are some tips to make
your dishes a little healthier this season.
Cookies, cakes and pies. While I am
sucker for a good apple pie and my moms
pinwheel cookies, I still know that I can
enjoy these treats in a healthier way. First,
lets talk sugar. While many think sugar is
an actual food, its really just a chemical.
In fact, its a pure chemical extracted
from plant sources and its true name is
sucrose with a chemical formula dubbed
C12H0011. Sounds like something you
want to eat, right? I didnt think so.
Fortunately, there are some great
substitutes for sugar that let your cookies
and pies taste just as avorful. For me,
the best substitutes are raw honey, maple
syrup or agave nectar. The key word being
raw. Be sure you the label reads raw
because often honey, maple syrup and
agave are rened and further processed
stripping them of their nutrients and at
the same time adding more chemicals
your body doesnt need. Moreover, you
can also use these substitutes in smaller
amounts. Because honey, maple syrup

and agave nectar are sweeter, you only

have to use half of the amount you would
for regular sugar. For instance, if your
favorite cookie recipe calls for one cup of
sugar, use a half cup of maple syrup or
honey in its place.
In addition to great sugar substitutes,
there are a great many substitutes for
our favorite and most oft-used cooking
ingredient, white our. From coconut
our to milling our and gluten free and
whole grain our, there are considerably
better options. Because these ours tend
to be a little heavier, sometimes were
afraid of cooking or baking with them.
Well have no fear. This little trick will help:
when making a crust or making a cake,
try beating or folding the dough less then
you normally would. The less you do, the
uer or akier your favorite cake or pie
will be. Give it a try.
Casseroles, pastas and side dishes.
While it may not seem like a traditional
holiday dish, I love some good ole
fashioned macaroni and cheese with
bacon and Gruyere cheese at holiday
time. Once I have a good serving or two, I
know that the food coma will set in and I
will be taking a nap. Well instead of those
carbs, creams and cheeses weighing us
down and making us sleepy, there are
some easy substitutions to make these
dishes healthier.
A very simple way to substitute those
creams and cheeses is by replacing them
with Greek yogurt, which is packed with
protein and has none of the fat and
calories the creams and cheeses do.
Because of its thickness and consistency,
Greek yogurt binds well to food and holds
up to heat very well.
While youre stirring in your Greek
yogurt to your favorite casserole or pasta
dish, think about adding some veggies
into the mix. Believe it or not, veggies
can add great avor and depth to any of
your side dishes. Recently, I roasted some
cauliower and added it into my mac and
cheese. I was pleasantly surprised. As a
simple, easy tip, try only using half the
amount of pasta or our required and
replace it with your favorite veggie. If you
want to be really adventurous, replace
your traditional mashed potatoes with
mashed broccoli or mashed cauliower.
Be sure that you give these simple
substitutes and tips a try to make your
dishes healthier this holiday season.

INSIDE LGBT WASHINGTON

A hero to some, an enigma to others

Assessing the complicated
history of Marion Barry

PETER ROSENSTEIN is a D.C.-based LGBT rights

and Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly
for the Blade.

The Marion Barry I knew was larger

than life. He was a civil rights icon and in
many ways a great mayor of the District
of Columbia. He was a supporter of LGBT
rights most of his life until it came to a
nal vote on marriage equality when he
spoke out in ways that were both oensive and unfathomable.
His words shocked a community that
he once credited with helping him win his
rst race for mayor in 1978. Barrys early
success in amending the citys Human
Rights Act ensured that there would be
no referendum on marriage equality in
the District and the majority could never
vote to curtail the rights of a minority.
Glenn Baker, producer of a documentary
for WETA on D.C. in the 1980s, said of
Barry, Whites helped elect him; he embraced the gay community and was very
wise about developing that constituency.

He had gay members on his sta and in

the city government, and as a result, D.C.
became known as a gay-friendly city, and
grew to be one of the most vibrant gay
communities in the country.
Yet in the national media Barry could
never get away from being the mayor arrested in a sting for smoking crack cocaine.

Columbia from a small sleepy Southern

town into a real city. When he was elected
in 1978, the city still had visible and invisible vestiges of the 1968 riots. Barry began the building of a vibrant downtown
and was responsible for the Reeves Center, the municipal building that began the
rebirth of the U Street corridor.

Marion Barry and the District of Columbia

will forever be linked in history.

History will remember Barry for all the

good things he did and for all those families who have a better life because of him.
I rst met Barry after moving to D.C.
just prior to the 1978 mayoral election. He
asked for my vote but I hadnt yet switched
my registration from New York. Like many
who came to work for the Carter administration we all thought after a few years we
would return home. Thirty-six years later I
am proud to say D.C. is my home.
Being a policy wonk and working on
disability issues led to my rst appointment to a D.C. commission by Mayor
Barry. As the second elected mayor of the
city, after Walter Washington, Barry was
responsible for changing the District of

without much competition. Unfortunately
his third term brought on talk of womanizing, drinking and drug use. Several of
his top aides were convicted of corruption. The U.S. Attorney at the time tried
every way to connect Barry to the corruption but couldnt. Then, in what some believed to be an outrageous perversion of
power, he set up the sting in which Barry
was caught smoking crack cocaine. After
all that, Barry was convicted of only a
misdemeanor charge but received a sixmonth jail term.
Sharon Pratt Kelly was elected mayor in
1990 in a surprise win with the support
of countless editorials in the Washington Post. She vowed to sweep the city
clean. Instead, she oversaw the demise
of the citys nances. After getting out of
jail, Barry ran for Council in 1992 and won
the Ward 8 seat. Then to the surprise of
many, he ran and won his fourth term
as mayor in 1994 with nearly 56 percent
of the vote. Barry was magnanimous to
those like me who didnt support him in
that race and willingly continued to work
with us.
While the citys nancial picture continued to disintegrate and Congress installed
a Financial Control Board to oversee the
District, Barry still managed to work with
Abe Pollin to build what was rst called
the MCI Center and is today the Verizon
Center. Together with the Shakespeare
Theatre and its artistic director Michael
Kahn, who led the way by moving to the
Lansburgh Theatre in 1992, these two
projects are responsible for the rebirth
of the 7th Street corridor and a vibrant
downtown entertainment district.
Barry ended his fourth term as mayor
at noon on Jan. 1, 1999. After a few years
of trying to stay out of politics in 2004 he
ran again in Ward 8 for Council and won.
It was a seat he held until his death. Marion Barry and the District of Columbia will
forever be linked in history.

Walking among HIVs dead at Congressional Cemetery

Look closely at the
tombstones for a World AIDS
Day history lesson
By NATHAN A. PAXTON
I encounter the HIV epidemic in unexpected places, particularly when I take my
dachshunds out for a walk.
I live near the Historic Congressional Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and
one of the programs of the cemetery
allows some of us to walk our dogs
among graves of the well known and almost anonymous. The graves of J. Edgar
Hoover, Elbridge Gerry (he of the gerrymander) and John Philip Sousa get most
of the attention.
In quieter ways, I can read the toll of
the killing years among gay men in Washington. Most often, the signs are demographic: single men, not buried in a family
plot, who died between the early-80s and
mid-90s, between the ages of 25 and 55.
Sometimes Ill nd these graves in clusters, as if friends and lovers wanted to
share proximity in death as in life. Often,
though, I will nd these graves by themselves, and I wonder what story lies behind the solitariness.
Some graves proclaim their gayness
loud and proud, like that of Leonard
Matlovich, the rst active duty member
of the armed forces to challenge the
ban on gay and lesbian people serving
in the military. Another mentions being
a proud gay educator. Once you know
what to look for, you see these men everywhere. As Walter and Russell sni
and bound jauntily among the headstones, the three of us walk among HIVs
dead, just as we walk among Union and
Confederate dead.
I study the politics of epidemics, especially HIV, and its often said that ones
research manifests ones own demons.
My own years of research on the development of dierent countries HIV/AIDS
policies stemmed, I came to see, from a
personal recognition, as much as intellectual motivations.
But for the accident of the year in which
I was born, it is quite probable that as
a gay man in America I would not have
been alive to do my work and live my life.
HIV, rst understood as AIDS, made its
rst recognized appearance in gay men,
and it is often still thought of as a gay disease, here in the United States and in the
developing countries I study.
Had I been born just a few years earlier, I would be smack in the midst of that
generation that rst showed the evidence
of one of the worst plagues in human history. It is quite probable that I would now

be dead.
Living in the San Francisco Bay Area
in the late 90s, it was hard not to notice
that gay men between 40 and 60 were
sometimes rare, even missing. Friends
who had been living there less than
10 years earlier told stories: My friend
Billy spoke of attending two memorials a weekend for months on end; Len
remembered wearing full sterile garb
to visit dying friends in the hospital in
1982; and people at my church, gay and
straight, remembered constant care rotas for a changing and diminishing set
of friends and lovers. Len, a retired professor, told me that caring for his ailing
mother in the late 1970s kept him home
and out of the bars: Thats probably
what kept me alive.
As a social scientist, I think I have a
pretty good understanding of the probabilities behind many everyday actions
and circumstances. It is sobering to realize that only a matter of years may separate one from the near-certainty of the
disease. Even now, I accept as normal that
some of my friends have not escaped the
laws of probabilities and plagues. Friends
of mine speak of a time in their lives when
they could count more friends and lovers
who were dead than alive.
Each Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day, and we
generally dont much mark the day here
in the United States. For many folks, this
titanic killer has become a mere chronic
disease, thanks to the antiretroviral cocktail therapies available to us. As a result,
gay men, for example, have been able to
turn their social and political eorts toward a variety of other issues: marriage,
employment protection, open military
service.
We are hardly out of the woods,
even in the United States. Recent CDC
reports indicate that unprotected anal
sex among gay men in America has
increased 20 percent since 2005. The
same trend has occurred in several other Western countries. While amazing
progress has occurred in sub-Saharan
Africa, HIV infections and AIDS deaths
are on the rise in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and the Middle
East and North Africa.
Even while MSM are the most-aected
group in the United States and other developed countries, the most common
type of HIV-infected person in the world
today is a young woman of African descent. The epidemic varies greatly and
remains consistent in its pervasive burrowing into those at the margins of our
cultures: sexual minorities, drug users,
women, sex workers and black people.
UNAIDS will tout good news this Dec.
1. The rate of annual new infections has
decreased all over the world, falling by a

third over the last decade. New infections

and deaths are down in many regions
and countries, including many of those
most aected, in the Caribbean and subSaharan Africa. Treatment access has increased dramatically in this last decade.
ARVs have transformed from global luxury to what scholars Joshua Busby and
Ethan Kapstein have called merit goods
goods whose consumers assert they
have a basic moral right to have, like lifesaving drugs once priced too high to consider providing on a mass basis throughout the developing world.
There will also be bad news. Men who
have sex with men are 13 times more
likely to be living with the disease. In east
Asia and the Middle East, the number of
infections is on the rise. Sexual behavior
has become more risky in many places,
with increasing numbers of partners
and less consistent condom use. There
are still more than 35 million people
roughly the population of California infected with the virus.
Most of the people who have died or
will die from AIDS have not been and
will not be obvious to those of us who
walk in cemeteries, with or without canine companions. The statistics of their
deaths wont reveal the manner of that
death so easily. We will not be able to
tell who the African-American men and
women who bear some of the highest
burdens in this country were. There will
be little evidence in their cemeteries of
the widespread injection drug use in
Eastern Europe and Central Asia that
spreads the disease there. The same

will be true of sex workers, transgender

people, closeted men who have sex with
men and poor women throughout the
world. We will forget them more easily,
in death as in life.
Just as HIV has proven amazingly adept and complex in the hiding places it
nds in our human bodies, it has proven
equally adept at hiding in the bodies of
our societies. HIV survives and thrives in
our biological and social bodies, adapting itself to work quietly and slowly, doing its work at the edges until it is powerful enough to harm those bodies. The
complexity of HIVs biological place pales
before the social complexity in which it is
enmeshed. If there is an evil in any disease, it lies not in the vector itself but in
what we humans do or do not do for the
people living with it, that is, by the evil
we have done and the evil done on our
behalf.
It is easy to miss the rst casualties of
the HIV epidemic, and most of my human
cemetery friends have never noticed the
plethora of these dead until I point the
matter out. In another world, some of
these dead would be alive and walking
their dogs among the grass and granite,
chapel and colombarium where they are
now buried. The HIV-infected and -affected of the future will be much harder
to nd, more invisible than the men that
Russell, Walter and I have become familiar with on our walks.

OUR BUSINESS MATTERS

Barry believed in the better city business could build

D.C. commemorates
contribution of complicated,
controversial politician

MARK LEE is a long-time entrepreneur

and community business advocate. Follow

OurBusinessMatters@gmail.com.

Marion Barry was a complicated and

controversial man who symbolized many
things to most people. Much of it wasnt
the best a city could hope to have.
The outpouring of reaction to news of
the former four-term D.C. mayor and sitting longtime D.C. Council members sudden death due to hypertensive cardiovascular disease in the early hours of Sunday
at the age of 78 will undoubtedly intensify
in coming days. Barrys frail-of-late and nally failed body is expected to lie in state
at the District Building, ags are ying at
half-mast and quick planning for a large-

scale memorial event is underway.

His home going signies the departure of the most prominent and inuential gure dominating the citys mere
four-decade modern era. Since the implementation of Home Rule in 1974, when
the then school board chairman was rst
elected to the inaugural D.C. Council, no
other political practitioner would come
to epitomize D.C. in the same way or to
the same degree. Nor might there ever be
another.
An always larger-than-life politician
who enjoyed the notion of empowerment
and self-governance more than he was
adept at delivering it, his well-known foibles and oenses will be duly noted. He
will be given more credit for lifting up the
least, the last and the lost than he ever
actually conveyed. The only honest homage he earned in that realm was redemption as salvation and hope as aspiration.
He was most often forgiven the failure to
provide more.
Overlooked in the many retrospectives,
recollections and remembrances following
his passing, however, has been the thing
that time may tender as large in his legacy.
More than most dared to envision at
the time, Barry believed that the business
community was the key to rebuilding

what was a broke-down town. The citys

core and broad swaths of its high-prole
corridors remained as pockmarked from
the late-60s riots and the decline that followed as economic ruin has wrought in
Detroit. D.C. was a desperate disaster.
Barry successfully cajoled developers
and convinced businesses that the thenhollow shell of a downtown could become what it is today.
Coupled with the construction of the
original Washington Convention Center
that would spur development, including
the now-named Verizon Center arena and
Gallery Place environs, and the Reeves
Center municipal building that signied
hope for a revitalized 14th Street corridor
that would come, Barry understood that
the road to rejuvenation and economic
vitality required the enlistment of the private sector.
Believing in a better city business
could build was how he laid the groundlevel foundation for todays thriving D.C.
Through encouragement of a nascent
slow renaissance of the central core, Barry demonstrated that enterprise was the
essential economic engine.
He viewed business as ally to enlist, not
foe to encumber.
Unlike the corrupt self-dealing and per-

sonal aggrandizement that in recent years

has felled or tainted elected ocials, Barry never sought to personally prot from
the economic development engendered.
He demonstrated his commitment to the
city and his love for its people in a manner perhaps weve become too cynical to
appreciate.
Barry may not have been a competent
manager of the type voters demand today. His patronage-bloated payroll took
subsequent mayors years to reduce. His
fantasy-based accounting methods bankrupted government and resulted in the
loss of nancial and management control
for a time. Under his watch the school
system deteriorated and District agencies
wallowed in dysfunction.
At the nadir of his mayoral tenure private contractors wouldnt work with the
city to plow snow from the streets for
fear theyd never be paid, city employees
wouldnt answer the rotary-dial phones
they were provided or dig through the index cards in recipe-style metal boxes that
held handwritten records. Barry allowed
the city to devolve to the worst imaginable state of aairs.
Yet he was a friend to business and
business returned the favor when the city
most needed help.

VIEWPOINT

After election, D.C. losing 4 key pro-LGBT leaders

Gray, Catania, Graham and
Wells deserve our thanks

CHRISTOPHER DYER is a D.C.-based activist.

Reach him via www.christopherdyer.com.

In January, four strong champions of

LGBT equality will no longer be serving
as elected leaders in the District of Columbia. Council members David Catania,
Jim Graham and Tommy Wells as well
as Mayor Vincent Gray all deserve our
thanks for their steadfast support of
our community and eorts to advance
equality.
Council member Wells began his support of our community through service
on the school board. As a Council mem-

ber representing Ward 6, Wells voted for

marriage equality. As chair of the Judiciary committee he introduced and helped
pass legislation that made it easier for
residents to ociate weddings. He also
introduced and helped pass the JaParker Deoni Jones Birth Certicate Equality
Amendment Act of 2013, which makes
it easier for transgender residents to
change names on their birth certicate.
He is currently working on legislation that
would repeal a congressionally opposed
amendment to our Human Rights Act that
allows religiously aliated educational institutions to discriminate on the basis of
sexual orientation.
Council member Jim Graham was the
rst openly gay Democrat elected to
the City Council. Prior to serving on the
Council, Graham provided critical leadership in the response to HIV/AIDS as the
executive director of Whitman-Walker
Health. As a member of Council he championed marriage equality and set aside
the rst-ever funding for LGBT homeless
youth. In 2013, he helped get the LG-

BTQ Homeless Reform Amendment Act

of 2013 through the Council, which will
help combat LGBT youth homelessness
for years to come.
Council member David Catania was
the rst openly gay member of the
Council. As chair of the health committee, he provided aggressive oversight over the Department of Health
with special attention paid to the HIV/
AIDS Administration. This oversight
was one of the contributing factors to
an improved response to the disease
that has saved the lives of many. He
also earmarked tobacco settlement dollars to help fund the rst LGBT-specic
smoking cessation program in the city.
Finally, he helped lead the eort in the
Council to get the marriage equality bill
passed into law.
Mayor Vincent Gray has been a strong
champion of LGBT equality. Prior to joining the Council, he served as executive
director of Covenant House and ensured that there was culturally competent care provided for LGBT homeless

youth in his programs. As a member of

the Council, he strongly supported LGBT
issues. As chair he was responsible for
shepherding the marriage bill through
and passed into law. As mayor, he has
been one of the strongest champions of
the transgender community. As a result
of his leadership, access to job training
programs signicantly increased and the
city expanded health insurance coverage
to include all gender transition related
procedures.
We are fortunate to live in a city that
values LGBT equality. We are one of few
jurisdictions in the country that have
total equality. Community groups like
GLAA, Gertrude Stein and the D.C. Coalition, as well as committed activists
across the city, have all played critical
roles in advocating for our rights. The
actions of these four elected ocials
were crucial in improving the lives of
LGBT equality. As an LGBT organizer
who has had the honor of working with
these great leaders, it is my pleasure to
thank them for their service.

TVs hit shows could use a dose of lesbian

From Scandal to Nashville,
tough love for straight heroines

In solidarity with my friends and family in South Bualo I have been sheltering
at home during the snowstorm. Mind you
not a lick of snow has fallen in Manhattan.
Truth be told, and it so rarely is, freshly
miserable from the mid-term election avalanche, I was avoiding the Desolation of
Smug post-election analysis by catching
up on my TV dame shows.
Cold comfort. I had settled down for a
long winters watch: Homeland, Nash-

ville, The Good Wife and the Scandalridden stories of a place called ShondraLand. Correct pillow placement, chip to
salsa ratio and correct clicker. And along
came the winter season nales like the
annoying coital interrupt us of a knock on
the door from housekeeping. How long
has this hiatal thing been going on?
When I was coming up, the big three
networks, actually the only three networks, would take a break for a few weeks
for holiday specials. Suddenly Bonanza
was gone and we were forced to behave
through the made-for-TV Menotti opera,
Amahl and the Night Visitors. Or sing along
with the blindingly white King Family trilling Christmas standards, perched on a
green-garlanded staircase. Sometimes I
could talk the Clinton family parents into
watching Nixon-nosed Bob Hope snark
his way through his USO show. I didnt get
him, but my brothers and I did enjoy the
scantily clad showgirls. A lot.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programs.
That there are so many women-centric

TV dramas, often written, developed and

run by women is the good news. That
Shondra Rimes owns Thursday night primetime is the great news. Its probably not
good form to use TVs depiction of women
as a synecdoche for all straight women,
but I am worried about my straight sisters.
Homelands Carrie Mathisson, a highranking CIA station chief, is Exhibit A of
what the fog of war can do to anyone. I
unfriended her for two weeks after she
almost drowned her baby. Is her only secret weapon the sexual seduction of assets like Brody and the very young Aayan?
Nashville, created by Callie Khouri of
Thelma and Louise fame, has Friday Night
Lights Connie Britton as country music star
Rayna James. Its great to see an older woman get a second wind, take the lead in her
career and lean in to mentor young women.
But Rayna seems dened by the endless torment of her two loves, Deacon and Luke.
The Rimes vehicle Scandal has Olivia
Pope capably fast-talking and managing
images all over D.C. She, too, is tormented by two loves, a CIA agent and the pres-

ident of the United States. In our house,

Scandals fatal aw is how anyone could
nd the president a catch.
Im generally so exhausted from all that
shark-jumping that I cant watch Rimes
How to Get Away With Murder, which is
on right after Scandal. Im saving the wonders of Viola Davis and the amazing wig removal scene for another snowstorm.
It is fun to watch The Good Wife with
an actual lawyer, although my, Can they
actually do that? is as annoying as Alicia Florrick. Although a reputedly strong
woman she seems constantly ummoxed,
passive and ounces away instead of asking a follow-up question. My in-house lawyer often moans, Ugh, shes such a girl.
There has to be a middle road between
Golden and Gone Girl. I humbly suggest that each of these heroines could
benet from a lesbian friend. Forget Kalinda, an L-Word lesbian grown up and
gone bad. Not a one of these gals has a
lesbian friend to buck her up and trashtalk the men in their lives. Kathy Bates
cant be everywhere, but I am available.

NBA star on his career and

award celebrates a courageous leader

who has gone the distance for LGBT
equality despite incredible odds.

By KEVIN MAJOROS

WASHINGTON BLADE:Congratulations
on a great career. Thirteen years is a long
time to be a professional athlete. What
part of the routine are you going to miss
the most?
JASON COLLINS: Thats easy. I am
going to miss the afternoon nap. NBA
games usually start around 7 or 7:30 p.m.
and most players usually take a nap on
game day. A typical game day starts with
a shootaround for two hours starting
at 9:30 a.m. You get back to the hotel
or your house around 1 p.m. and most
players take a nap for two hours. My
brother is the assistant coach now for the
Golden State Warriors and he is back into
the habit of afternoon naps even though
hes not playing. Its part of the routine.

Jason Collins announced his retirement

from the NBA on Nov. 19 after a 13year career that included 10 trips to the
playos. He says his body, especially his
back, was telling him it was time.
When Collins was signed by the
Brooklyn Nets earlier this year for a 10day contract, he became the rst openly
gay athlete in one of the four major male
professional sports leagues. He was
retained by the Nets and went on to play
22 games in the regular season and the
team advanced to the playos.
The Blade sat down with Collins when
he was in town to accept the National
Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce/
American Airlines ExtrAA Mile Award at
the Chambers dinner last weekend. The

BLADE: Are you hoping to stay involved

in basketball?
COLLINS:I have been oered a position
with NBA Cares as an ambassador.
Its a very broad job description but I
will be working to support current and
former NBA players. They have dierent
community service outreach programs
that I will be participating in and I will
also be encouraging kids and adults
to maintain a healthy active lifestyle.
Preferably they would accomplish that by
playing basketball.
BLADE: You have already stated in the
press that you hope to be remembered
as a great teammate. Does it make you
smile to know that based on your lifetime
RAPM (Regularized Adjusted Plus-Minus)
stats, you are one of the most underrated
NBA players of the last 13 years?
COLLINS: Yes, it does. When I was
with the Nets at the beginning of my
career we had a running joke about that
in the locker room. We loved to laugh

and joke and everythings on the table.

After my rookie contract was over, my
next deal was a four-year contract. I was
very fortunate to be playing with Jason
Kidd at that time because he made me
look very good which helped me to get
the contract. I was a starter then and my
numbers were o but the teams were
always successful and we were making
it to the playos. My teammate Brian
Scalabrine had a great line. Dont look
at my points and rebounds; look at my
plus-minus stats. Those stats point to
whether the team is better when you are
on the court as opposed to when you
are o. Scalabrine always said my plusminus was o the chart but I didnt see
it until recently just how good my plusminus was. I played for 13 years and 10
of those teams went on to the playos.
I was a starter on maybe ve or six of
those teams and even if I wasnt a starter

QUEERY: 20 QUESTIONS FOR DAINTY DANDRIDGE/TIFFANY MOTT-SMITH

TIFFANY MOTT-SMITH

By JOEY DiGUGLIELMO

Tiany Mott-Smith calls herself a Jackie of all trades and lists producer,
historian, chanteuse and more among her job titles. In fact see below
the tired, old what do you do question annoys her to no end.
In addition to pursuing a Ph.D. by day in LGBT health policy and practice
from George Washington University, she performs by evening as Dainty
Dandridge, a local burlesque star who has found a niche among queer black
D.C. performers. Look for her and colleagues on Nov. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at GALA
Hispanic Theatre (3333 14th St., N.W.) for Chocolate City Burlesque and
Cabaret presents Black Friday!, which promises a live DJ, vendors, prizes
and performances by the Chocolate City Kitties such as Aurora Wells, Syxx
De Leone, Kristen Briscoe KStar and many more. Tickets ($35) are available at
chocolatecityburlesque.com/tickets.
Mott-Smith, a Detroit native, lives with her partner, Lee, on the U Street
corridor. She enjoys glitter and long bike rides in her free time.

How long have you been out and

who was the hardest person to tell?
Ive been out for six years although my
mom denitely caught me smooching with
a few little WWF-obsessed tomboys as a wee
lass. Little ones were the hardest to come out
to by far. I was so terried I actually avoided
talking to some family friends for quite some
time.
Whos your LGBT hero?
Every black queer woman I have ever met
is my hero. They are some of the strongest
and most dynamic people in the world. I love
and admire them all too much to choose.
Whats Washingtons best
nightspot, past or present?
Too many to name. I really adore
Tropicalia. Theyve got amazing art
everywhere from the walls to the literal stairs.
But I love a good circuit party and tea dance
Maracuyeah, Ladies Takeover, Bodywork,
Overeasy and FreakOUT are among some of
my faves.
Describe your dream wedding.
Big. The biggest. I mean Princess Di big.
Giant pued sleeves with a 12-foot train, gold
plated bounce houses and several ice cream
cakes with butter cream frosting.
What non-LGBT issue are
you most passionate about?
For me, there is no such thing as a nonLGBT issue. Queerness does not exist in
a vacuum and as such neither do queer
peoples issues.
What historical outcome
would you change?
I think it wouldve been nice to see
waves of feminism be more inclusive. Its
heartbreaking when I meet people who are
policing of folks because theyve decided their
line of work, gender presentation, style of
dress, cultural nuances and what have you
means they are not a true feminist.
Whats been the most memorable pop
culture moment of your lifetime?
Watching the Remember the Time music
video (Michael Jackson) after Fresh Prince
of Bel Air. I sat there surrounded by my
cousins, waiting patiently for it to come on
the television. When it did, it was awesome
a feast for the eyes.
On what do you insist?
Everything. I am a completely unrelenting
Taurus with a touch of Gemini.
What was your last
acebook post or Tweet?
I split my days between my dual
personalities so I have two posts. Pensive
afropunk Dainty posted how news of another
black child being killed by police made her
afraid to become a mother. Striptease
connoisseur Dainty posted about how
producing Chocolate City Burlesque and
Cabaret while simultaneously casting for this
seasons Best of Burlesqueer has reignited

her awe of black queer performers and the

magic they do.
If your life were a book,
what would the title be?
The Lack of Derriere Diaries. It would
be in the self help section next to my other
book, What Dat Dainty Do: The Art of Making
Inappropriate Small Talk.
If science discovered a way to change
sexual orientation, what would you do?
I dont think its possible to be more queer
than I am now, but I would sure try!
What do you believe in
beyond the physical world?
I am one of those kooky Catholics, so I
believe theres a beautiful God waiting to give
us all a big hug and reunite us with loved
ones whove passed.
Whats your advice for
LGBT movement leaders?
Be brave. Our lives literally depend on
LGBT leaders being the bravest and most
determined theyve ever been.
What would you walk
across hot coals for?
Pizza and rhinestones. Also love.
What LGBT stereotype annoys you most?
All lesbians are cisgender butch women
who alternate between wearing sensible
shoes and searching for home improvement
projects. My shoes are anything but sensible,
I dont even know the last time I held a
hammer and I am denitely gayer than a
picnic basket.
Whats your favorite LGBT movie?
Gigola. Its stylish and brooding.
Whats the most overrated social custom?
Asking others, What do you do? Its such
an overwhelming question. Ive never quite
mastered the art of tting all my work and
play into an amended elevator speech, and I
dont see why I should expect anyone else to
either.
What trophy or prize do you most covet?
My rst set of pasties! They literally cover
my entire chest because I was terried to
show it to anyone. I just remember my
burlesque mama Lushes Lamoan giving
them her blessing and feeling like I was made
of diamonds and pearls.
What do you wish youd known at 18?
That I could be a stripper and a Ph.D. I was
sure one would cancel out the other back
then. Turns out, not so much.
Why Washington?
Coming to D.C. was the rst time I felt like
I was surrounded by unrepentant blackness.
I regularly saw black people with natural hair
and people still thought they were beautiful.
They owned businesses and were CEOs. They
were nerdy and they didnt feel the need to
hide it. Their words were respected. They
were respected. It was really intoxicating.
From then on I told myself, Ive gotta get back
to the Chocolate City. And here I am.

Named Moe at Arena Stage.

Louis Jordan tribute show

widens horizons for
out Chicago actor
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Being part of Arena Stages production
of the tribute musical Five Guys Named
Moe, is an eye-opening experience for
out actor Travis Porchia.
As Four-Eyed Moe he clucks the lead
in Louis Jordans comic number Aint
Nobody Here but Us Chickens, and to his
surprise, large swathes of the audience
know the song. To me this is all so new,
he says. But for many people the show is
a big nostalgia trip.
Known as King of the Jukebox,
Jordan was a trailblazing bandleader
and songwriter who turned out scads of
crossover, chart toppers throughout the
30s and 40s. For many today, Jordans
songs, a wild amalgam of jazz of blues,
are more recognizable than his name.
The shows more than 20-song score
(updated for this production to feel more
contemporary) includes hits like Is You
Is Or Is You Aint My Baby, Caldonia,
Whats the Use of Getting Sober, Let the
Good Times Roll and Dont Let the Sun
Catch You Crying.
The shows storyline is simple: Its late
at night. Nomax returns to his apartment
drunk and depressed because his woman
is done with him. And then magically, the
group Five Guys materializes through the
radio. The talented quintet is on hand to
both perform and encourage a reluctant
Nomax to straighten up and act right.
This production is dierent. Its Five
Moes (all in their 20s) have been fashioned
to be more of a contemporary boy band,
explains the shows out director Robert
OHara, well known for directing and
writing plays including Bootycandy, an
autobiographical take on growing up gay
and black in America.

This cast all have to be able to dance

and sing and act, so I was looking for
versatility and range. And clearly I was
looking for sex appeal. I needed each
actor to contribute to the boy band idea
by having a distinct look and quality that
allows the audience to enjoy not only
hearing the music but wanting to be up
on the stage with the performers sort
of a modern-day Boyz II Men or Jodeci.
In addition to Porchia, the Moes
are Paris Nix, Clinton Roane, Sheldon
Henry and Jobari Parker-Namdar. Kevin
McAllister plays Nomax.
Beyond the descriptive names, the script
gives scant information on the Moes.
Usually, Four-Eyed Moe is played like
a nerd, says Porchia, 26. But [OHara]
allowed us to create our own characters,
so I went the other direction. My Moe is the
badass of the group kind of like A.J. form
Backstreet Boys. Hes called Four-Eyed
because he always wears sunglasses.
Each Moe reects a dierent aspect of
Nomax, says the Chicago-based actor. My
Moe is the part struggling with addiction,
the guy whos always coming o a bender.
I sing Azure-Te (Paris Blues), a song about
losing the one you love. Like Nomax,
hes numbing himself. For me it gives the
character a little weight and makes my
moments with Nomax more honest.
Born in Detroit, Porchia grew up a
dance-loving only child in an extended
family of jocks.
As a kid, I was a glutton for attention. I
tried karate and football, but always came
back to singing, dancing and performing.
Whatever I did, my parents were my
greatest cheerleaders.

DINING

Turkey salad isnt the only thing you can do with your Thanksgiving leftovers.

Thanksgiving basics can

live on as tasty cocktails
By KRISTEN HARTKE
You slaved over a hot stove all day and
fed the masses until their bellies were
bursting with turkey, stung, green bean
casserole and pumpkin pie. You washed
all those dishes, pried the wishbone
out of the dogs mouth and packed the
leftovers neatly into color-coordinated
Tupperware containers. At the end of it
all, you deserve a drink.
Not every leftover lends itself to a
libation mashed potato martini,
anyone? but there are a few items from
the Thanksgiving table that meld perfectly
into drinks after the big day, particularly
cranberries
and
sweet
potatoes.
Cranberry sauce, whether whole berry
or jellied, is a tangy basis for everything
from cosmopolitans to margaritas, while
roasted sweet potatoes add valuable
nutrients to a breakfast smoothie.
Jam cocktails have a particularly
luscious mouthfeel, as the fruits natural
pectin provides a silky texture, making
cranberry jelly a logical candidate for
bright winter cocktails; add a Scandinavian
twist to your cranberry cocktail by
combining it with a local seasonal gin
made by New Columbia Distillers called
Ginavit. Inspired by aquavit, a traditional
grain- or potato-based alcohol avored
with caraway, cardamom, citrus, dill and
other herbs and spices, New Columbias
Ginavit has a distinctly wintery avor that,
when married with the tartness of chilled
cranberry, makes it perfect to sip while
wrapped up in a wooly sweater around a
repit on the back patio.
If youre worried about having
overindulged at Thanksgiving dinner,
you can repurpose sweet potatoes into
a healthy smoothie to drink either before
or after you head to the gym to work o
your guilt. High in complex carbohydrates,
ber, and beta carotene, sweet potatoes
will actually increase in vitamin C content
when baked; sweet potatoes with dark
orange esh also have very high levels

of vitamin A. When combined with fresh

citrus juice and almond milk, you can
turn a sweet potato side dish into a great
start to that Black Friday spin class
and if youd rather enjoy your smoothie
after class with a splash of some local
rye whisky from Catoctin Creek Distilling
Company, well just let that stay our little
secret.

Crushed Cranberry Cocktail

1/2 teaspoon light agave syrup
(optional; use if you like a sweeter drink)
Put all the ingredients in a shaker lled
with ice and shake vigorously to break
up the cranberry sauce. Strain through
a ne mesh strainer (to help remove
some of the larger bits of cranberry) into
a chilled martini or cosmopolitan glass.
Garnish with lightly cooked cranberries
or a wedge of orange or lime. Makes one
cocktail.

TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER has been reading

since she was 3 years old.She lives in Wisconsin
with two dogs and 12,000 books. Reach her at
bookwormsez@yahoo.com.

Every now and then, you catch your

cat staring o into space and you wonder
what hes thinking about.
Food, maybe; hes always hungry.
Outside, perhaps, or where his catnip
mouse is hiding? Then again, he could be
pondering the meaning of life; you never
know, with a cat.
Dont you wish you understood whats
going on inside that furry head? Read
The Story of Fester Cat by Paul Magrs,
and you might get some idea.
Fester the Cat wasnt cut out for the life
of a stray.
Miss Bessy (who really was a boy cat)
made fun of Fester for wanting a better
life, but Fester didnt listen. The house he
found the warm house where two men
lived was welcoming and there was
food. Bessy said the men were gay and
it wasnt natural, but Fester didnt care.
It took him awhile to move in, which
was just as well. Paul and Jeremy seemed
to be just getting used to one another,
too. Paul worked at home and made sure
Fester had lots of places to sleep. Jeremy
had a stressful job that he really wasnt
happy doing, so Fester made sure to
sing to Jeremy quite often.
Life in the cottage was good Fester
had his own garden and he saw his old

street friends occasionally. He had all

the food he could eat, sunny places to
curl up, scratches on his chin and, though
he wasnt altogether keen on it, Paul and
Jeremy took Fester to the hairdresser
now and then. Fester knew the
hairdresser was really a veterinarian,
and he tried not to be too ungrateful.
But months living on the streets are
hard on a cat and Festers hairdresser
discovered a problem with his thyroid.
Medicine helped that, but there wasnt
much to be done about a small stroke he
suered. The stroke led to headaches and
wobbly legs and Fester was embarrassed
that he couldnt do steps any more.
Paul and Jeremy were very nice about
it, but they had their own issues to x.
I tried so hard to like this book, I truly
did. Instead, what I really wanted to do
with The Story of Fester Cat was to throw
it in a litter box and send it somewhere
far away.
Yes, I do have to admit, I was charmed
by about three sentences in this catwritten story (obviously penned by
human Paul Magrs). Unfortunately,
those sentences were superseded by
an insuerably cutesy tale that strained
my adult sensibilities; repeated (and
sometimes painfully detailed) mentions
of poo; a colorfully slangy description
of a cats sexual organs; a whole chapter
on intestinal worms; and the non-word
Ungow! over and over once, in a
passage that reminded me distinctly of
Ulysses. No, seriously.
I tried. And I think, minus the bodily
functions, physical descriptions and
worms, The Story of Fester Cat mightve
even been a good kids book. But for an
adult even the most determined cat
lover dont bother to think about it.

during the regular season, sometimes I

came o the bench to start because of
the matchups against other players, say
for example against Dwight Howard who
was then with the Orlando Magic.
BLADE: After you were signed by the
Brooklyn Nets and started playing, the
LGBT community held its breath waiting
to see what the response would be
from the media and the fans. Were you
surprised that it was overwhelmingly
positive?
COLLINS: I didnt really go into it with
any expectations other than whatever I
was going to be presented with, I was going
to be able to control my reactions. One of
my things is to control what I can control. If
somebody does or says something to you
that makes you feel wronged, you should
react in a professional way. Especially
when you are playing sports because it
can make you very emotional. You might
say or do things that you regret at a later
time. However, I knew that I didnt have
that luxury. I have always had good self-

discipline and I guess I did prepare for if

someone were to say something or do
something, I would react in a professional
and controlled way.
BLADE: Did you have a favorite
moment in your nal season?
COLLINS: O the court, it was meeting
Matthew Shepards parents, Judy and
Dennis Shepard. It was incredible. On the
court, it was my team beating the Toronto
Raptors in game seven of the playos in
Toronto (the Nets won that game 104-103
and clinched the series). That arena was
the loudest I have ever heard at a sporting
event and I have been to a lot of dierent
sporting events, including participating in
the Final Four. It was especially loud when
Deron Williams was shooting two free
throws near the end of the game. And
it wasnt just the fans inside the arena,
there were over 15,000 fans outside and
you could hear them as well. I couldnt
even hear what my teammates were
saying right in front of me.
BLADE: The nal word on all the fuss
about the locker room?

COLLINS: If you have a good team

its a non-issue. You can see that when
there are other issues and I will point to
the Miami Dolphins situation. When you
dont have solid leadership, regardless of
the factor, things can go wrong. As long
as you are on a good team with solid
leadership from the coach to the team
captains, there is nothing to worry about.
Leadership aects so much, especially in
team sports.
BLADE: You serve on the Presidents
Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.
Under your prole on their website, your
fun facts section is empty. Can we hear
three fun facts?
COLLINS: OK. When I am at home in
Los Angeles, I play tennis about four days
a week.My rst serve is pretty good and
I can come up with some good angles. I
was talking to a buddy today who I used
to play golf with and we have a mutual
friend who I play tennis with and my
buddy told me that I should just give up
golf and stick with tennis. The farthest
place I have traveled is Istanbul and since
I went across the Bosphorus Bridge, I

am counting that as Asia. So yes, my

counting of going to Asia is crossing the
Bosphorus. In my house, I actually have
a closet that is dedicated just to Nike Air
Force 1 shoes. It helps that I am a Nike
Athlete, but I would say there are 50 pairs
of shoes in there.
BLADE: What organizations are you
going to be doing outreach with going
forward?
COLLINS: Just a few that come to mind
are the Presidents Council on Fitness,
Sports & Nutrition, the Gay, Lesbian &
Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and
I am an honorary board member for
the Point Foundation. I am also on the
advisory board of the Billie Jean King
Leadership Initiative. And there is other
stu. I like traveling and when I get to
the events and hear peoples stories, it
is just fascinating. People come up to me
and thank me for coming out because
my story has aected a relationship that
they have with a loved one in a positive
way. Its really cool just to listen to people,
being out in the community and being an
advocate for change.

REALESTATE

The gift of gratitude

Reduce stress, anxiety
with a positive attitude
By VALERIE M. BLAKE
Last week, I was part of a discussion
group where my colleagues and I were
asked to focus on things we can be grateful for, not only in good times but in
seemingly bad times as well.
For example, if we show 10 homes to
a client and he doesnt nd one he likes,
then we can be grateful that we have increased our market knowledge and have
gained a better understanding of what to
show him during the next outing to increase our chances of success.
Or, if a home inspection reveals a
plethora of problems, then we can be
grateful that we have a contingency that
allows our client to get out of the contract
or that we know some licensed contractors who can solve the problems.
And when negotiations between buyers
and sellers break down, we can be grateful that this is only a real estate transaction and not a bilateral treaty between
feuding nations and that the negotiations
are merely about a house and not about
issues that could lead to violence or war.
The idea, of course, is that there is always a way to maintain a positive outlook
and that by doing so, we experience less
stress and anxiety, are able to put things
in proper perspective and can continue
to be productive in our work and in our
personal lives.
This whole discussion couldnt have

come at a better time: the week before

Thanksgiving, when thankfulness and
gratitude are in the forefront of our minds.
I thought Id take this opportunity to
share with you some common complaints I have uttered, felt, or heard that
I am beginning to see in a more positive
light simply by thinking about the benets derived from what seems like pure
negativity. I challenge you to do the same.
Negative Thought: I dont have enough
money. Positive Spin: There are many,
many people less fortunate than I am.
Negative Thought: Having four dogs
makes spontaneous travel impossible.
Positive Spin: I would rather have the kisses, cuddles and unconditional love of my
furbabies than go anywhere in the world.
Negative Thought: My home has four
levels and no bathrooms on two of them.
Positive Spin: I get lots of exercise going
up and down stairs.
Negative Thought: I cant t my car in
the garage. Positive Spin: First, I have a garage and second, the reason I cant t my
car in it is because its lled with the staging items I need for my fabulous clients.
Negative Thought: I didnt get enough
sleep last night. Positive Spin: I was doing something I really enjoy, like reading
a good book, having a Netix moment, or
working toward a professional goal.
Negative Thought: Theres no place to
park near my oce for more than two
hours without risking a ticket. Positive
Spin: If I spend more than two hours at
the oce I am meeting a new client or
presenting an oer.
Negative Thought: My client didnt get

the house she wanted. Positive Spin: She

will learn from each experience and when
the situation is right, the house she gets
will be better than the one she wanted.
Negative Thought: Im sick. Positive
Spin: Im alive and will get better.
Negative Thought: Date? Who has time
to date? Positive Spin: I can choose who I
spend my time with and when or choose
to enjoy my own company.
What may be the most often uttered
negative thought of the week is this: I
have no plans for Thanksgiving. Please
remember those who are single, whose
family may live elsewhere, or whose
spouse or partner may be deployed in

service to our country and put a positive

spin on their Thanksgiving Day by inviting
them to share it with you.
Myself, I am lucky to have received several invitations to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with wonderful friends. As a result,
I dont have to cook or clean and will be
dining out with three men who refer to
me as The Divine Ms. B.
What could be more positive than that?
Chin-chin!

Martin&Jeff add real value

Real estate duos team
distinguished by attentive
service, pioneering approach
By MARK LEE
Longtime local real estate luminaries Jeff
Brier and Martin Toews will commence celebrating 20 years of pioneering residential
market service with the new year. Satisfied
clients throughout the region who have enjoyed attentive home buying and selling assistance with the Martin and Jeff Group will
share in this milestone.
It was in 1995 that the duo discussed collaborating over drinks at JR.s bar in the Dupont
Circle neighborhood. They both chuckle now
about the process of joining up, bantering that
Briers decision-making delay caused Toews
to feign mock offense. Mutual success in the
industry and robust schedules had caused a
deferral in consummating a commitment.
It was a shared experience representing
seller and buyer on a transaction complicated

by unexpected structural problems and reinspection requirements that provided an

acquaintance. Working through the issues
together and moving to successful completion
offered the opportunity for favorable impressions of compatible demeanors, problemsolving proficiencies and professional skills.
They joke that this match made in heaven prompts clients to assume they are a
romantic couple. Brier, currently single save
for his shelter-rescued terrier-poodle Tessa,
credits Toewss 28-year partner Stephen Gifford with encouraging a business affiliation.
Coming from Kansas where Toews earned
his MBA at Washburn University, Gifford
is Chief Anesthetist at the VA Medical Center and also licensed as a real estate agent.
Toews and Gifford married last year.
Toews worked as development officer at
Georgetown Medical Center before beginning
in real estate. Drawn to working independently and in command of his schedule, Gifford
was a partner who always believed I could be
successful in the business.
Brier, with a business degree from home
state UConn, worked as a corporate travel

agency operations manager and specialty

clothing boutique manager before visiting his
sister in Washington. The gregarious 30-yearold made quick friends and his two-week trip
never ended. I liked D.C. for all the reasons
everyone does, Brier suggests.
Seeking new career opportunities and familiar with the industry through his developer
dad, Brier helped his real estate sibling with
preparing for open houses and handling inspection appointments. He decided to obtain
a Realtor license.
Now, with more than a half-decade combined in real estate, Toews and Brier note
pioneering aspects of their partnership. Brier
was the first D.C. agent to include his photo in
advertising. Agents today are very promotionsavvy, Brier points out, but at the time personalizing my approach was very unique and
it started in the Blade.
When Toews and Brier teamed up, they
were the first to launch a website. We invested in personal branding, says Toews,
that was unusual for the period. Extensive
newspaper and online marketing, also incorporating direct mail and targeted out-

reach, was innovative. The two credit the

approach with building the business and
expanding their client base.
Recognized for multiple industry achievements, they offer unparalleled professional
equity to clients.
We know the city well, including areas that
are increasingly of interest to our diverse clientele, Brier says. Were not high-pressure
pushy sales people, adds Toews, but help
them know what to expect and prepare clients
for a competitive market.
A six-member team handles both sales and
rentals for homes and condos with superior
attention to detail, coordinated by 12-year firm
manager and veteran agent Stephen Goolsby.
The city has grown up, observes Toews,
and so have we. Our clients feel very well
taken care of, notes Brier, while his business
partner adds, we earn our commission every
time. Plus, theres a great amount of satisfaction in helping people find their home.

not otherwise have a place to meet. That
was very important to us too.
The ceremony took place at the close
of the rst day of the second annual Strategic Growth & Development Institute, a
two-day intensive business training program that was also the Centers inaugural
event. Business owners from across the
country and as far away as Bogota, Colombia who were institute participants

stayed to mingle with NGLCC sta, board

members, funders and friends and to talk
about the role of NGLCC in their success.
In her remarks to the assembled
guests, institute attendee Betsy Cerulo,
CEO of human resources placement company AdNet in Catonsville, Md., spoke
about the personal and immediate impact of NGLCCs approach.
In the past few years that Ive been
certied, this organization has done more
for me than any other organization that
Ive been part of in the 24 years that Ive
been in business, she said. All I have to
do is pick up the phone and ask a question, and they take me to the next level.
Talking to the Blade, Cerulo also praised
the benets of the Center as a face-to-face
meeting environment. Its valuable to have
the space to collaborate with like-minded
people, to share our challenges and victories, and when its LGBT-driven like this, its
also a place where you can make personal
connections and talk without lters.
Pocans comments from the podium
echoed Cerulos sentiments as he spoke about
his experience as a small business owner.
Its so important for the community to
be able to connect small business owners
with the suppliers who want to help us
through diversity, he said.
Other speakers at the event included
NGLCC Board Chair Mike Fuller, institute
keynote speaker and author of Predictable
Success Les McKeown, board member Irwin Drucker, and John Quattlebaum, Wealth
Planner at Wells Fargo and board member
of the Capital Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber
of Commerce, NGLCCs local aliate.
Wells Fargo contributed $1 million
to support the operation of the Center
as well as NGLCC Global and other programs through the NGLCC Foundation.
John Lake, Wells Fargo vice president and
LGBT Segment Manager, spoke about his
admiration for the way in which NGLCC
has grown its membership and programs
and said, This center is really a great
crown jewel in the NGLCCs eorts to promote and grow LGBT small businesses.
