SIPHONIC ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM

PART 1 GENERAL
1.1.0 SYSTEM PRODUCT
This section specifies the requirements necessary for the design, manufacture, supply,
installation, testing & commissioning, warranty of Siphonic Roof Drainage System for the
conveyance of rainwater from the roof to ground discharge point via connection to the
drainage system for the whole project.
The Siphonic Specialist Contractor (Specialist Contractor) shall be responsible for the
design, supply and installation of the complete Siphonic Roof Drainage System (Siphonic
System). The Specialist Contractor shall install the complete Siphonic Roof Drainage
System where no sub-letting of installation works is allowed in this system.
Siphonic system outlets and calculation software must have test reports validated by
accredited test laboratories such as SIRIM, TUV SUD PSB.
1.2.0 RELATED WORK
1.2.1

This section shall be used in conjunction with, but not limited to, the other relevant
specifications, the Drawings and Contract Documents to establish the total requirements for
the installation of the Siphonic roof drainage system.

1.2.2

CAUTION: Using this section without including the above mention will result in omission
of the basic requirements.

1.2.3

In the event of conflict regarding the roof drainage system requirements between this section
and any other document, the more stringent requirement shall apply, unless otherwise
specifically instructed by the Architect, Superintending Officer or Employer Representative.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

requirements of SS525:2006.

2.2.0

PREVAILING CONDITION
The Siphonic system shall be designed and manufactured to meet the specified performances
and requirements on dimension, thickness and visual appearance, and fit for the prevailing
local weather conditions. The roof rainwater shall discharge effectively from the collection
points to the discharge points upon completion. Pipes and fittings must meet the local
manufacturers performance specification.
The Siphonic Roof Drainage System proposed by the Specialist Contractor must have a track
record of system design, supply and install in Malaysia for at least 8 years and have a track

DESIGN PARAMETER

SIPHONIC ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM

Page : - 2 of 8

Technical Specification

The Siphonic system shall be designed to a dimensional rainfall intensity of 300mm/hr.

The roof at level 2 over the dining hall shall be designed to rainfall intensity of 350mm/hr.
2.4.0

DESIGN VELOCITY
The minimum flow velocity in the system shall not be less than 0.7 m/s for horizontal pipes
and 2.2 m/s for vertical pipes.
When the system is operating at its design intensity, the high velocity of the water will
ensure the system is performing self-cleansing inside the pipeline.
Self-cleansing shall also occur at the rainfalls as low as 50% of the design intensity. At
rainfalls less than the Siphonic roof drainage system shall operate under vented gravity flow
conditions.

2.5.0

OUTLET CONSTRUCTION
The Siphonic outlet shall be the proven product evident with design technical data,
performance graph, test certificate, etc for primary acceptance.
The system design shall also ensure that the outlets eliminate the intake of air into the
system. This set up full-bore flow and maximizes the capacity of the pipe work.
All exposed to weather component of the rain water outlet shall be of full metalic
construction able to withstand the industrial seaside condition for good weathering &
durability.

2.5.1

SIPHONIC OUTLET BASE UNIT CONSTRUCTION

The Siphonic outlet used shall be fully metallic (stainless steel and aluminium alloys).
The siphonic outlet stainless steel base plate shall not have a recess of more than 20mm into
the roof slab/metal gutter in order not to interfere with the structure element.

2.5.2

SIPHONIC OUTLET INTERFACING UNIT ON RC ROOF / SCUPPER

The Siphonic outlets shall come complete with stainless steel water proofing clamp ring for
water-tight interfacing with waterproofing material on RC roof / scupper construction.
Water-proofing material shall terminate within the base plate unit of the Siphonic outlet and
properly secured by the stainless steel water proofing clamping ring complete with stainless
steel bolts and nuts for water-tightness construction.
Water proofing membrane shall not rap into the outlet spigot as this will reduce the effective
bore of the siphonic outlet.

2.5.3

SIPHONIC OUTLET INTERFACING UNIT ON METAL ROOF / GUTTER

Siphonic outlets shall come complete with aluminum counter flange and EPDM water seal
for outlet installation on metal gutter for water-tightness requirement on Metal roof / gutter
construction. Silicon joint as primary with tightness barrier for outlet installation on metal
gutter is not acceptable.
All aluminum flanges and EPDM insulation should be properly secured with the base plate

unit of the Siphonic outlet complete with stainless steel bolts and nuts for water-tightness
construction.
2.6.0

DESIGN CALCULATION
The Siphonic system shall be designed by customized Fast-Flow computer program
specifically developed for this field or system. The computer program shall have test report
validated by accredited test laboratories such as SIRIM, TUV SUD PSB.
System design shall be supported by calculation report generated for each designed system.
Details of in-line components contained within each system shall also be clearly indicated.
The calculation report shall show clearly the following:

Drainage capacity
Velocity
Upstream pressure
Downstream pressure
Headloss

The calculation report must clearly indicate the system imbalance in separate sections. In
system more than one outlet, the imbalance in the system should not exceed 10% of the
hydraulic head (m) or 0.5m, whichever the smaller.
2.7.0

OUTLET SIZING
The Siphonic system shall be designed by selecting suitable size and quantity of outlet to
accommodate the computed rainfall.
The computed flow from an individual outlet shall not exceed the specified maximum
capacity for each outlet type size.

2.8.0

PIPES & FITTINGS

2.8.1

The pipes material shall be of UPVC "AE" Class VU (PN6) pipes complying to JISK 6741
standard or equivalent complete with matching UPVC fittings in accordance to the
Specialist requirement.

2.8.2

The selection of pipes & fittings must be able to withstand a working sub-atmospheric
pressure of 0.9bar.

2.8.3

Pipe joints must be capable of either resisting longitudinal forces without sliding apart or
must be restrained to prevent relative movement.

2.8.4

The Siphonic Roof Drainage System shall be designed to use pipes & fittings for the whole
UPVC AE range subject to their ability to withstand both positive and negative pressure
required by the system.

2.8.5

Siphonic System moulded or fabricated pipe fittings must be capable of either resisting
longitudinal forces without sliding apart or must be restrained to prevent relative movement
to the Siphonic Specialists requirement.

2.8.6
