Retain the Irish Conservation Measure inclusive of the proposed new reforms and
expand the initiative to other EU jurisdictions.
European farmed bass production at 128,000 tons can supply total bass demand
within both the EU retail and catering sectors nullifying the requirement to exploit
wild bass stocks.
As a comparative example the UK commercial catch of wild bass amounts to 5
million sterling combined the return to Ireland from tourist and indigenous bass
amounts to 69 million.
In terms of effective management and utilisation of a scarce and finite resource the
EU should move to maximise the economic return from the European bass resource
by shifting the stock management emphasis from commercial exploitation to favour
the establishment of a pan European bass sport fishery.
