Aftergraphenewasfirstproducedinthelabin2004,thousandsoflaboratoriesbegandevelopinggrapheneproducts
worldwide.Researcherswereamazedbyitslightweightandultrastrongproperties.Tenyearslater,scientistsnow
searchforothermaterialsthathavethesamelevelofpotential.
"Wecontinuetoworkwithgraphene,andtherearesomeapplicationswhereitworksverywell,"saidMarkHersam,the
BetteandNeisonHarrisChairinTeachingExcellenceatMcCormick,whoisagrapheneexpert."Butit'snottheanswer
toalltheworld'sproblems."
Partofafamilyofmaterialscalledtransitionmetaldichalcogenides,molybdenumdisulfide(MoS2)hasemergedasa
frontrunnermaterialforexplorationinHersam'slab.Likegraphene,itcanbeexfoliatedintoatomicallythinsheets.Asit
thinstotheatomiclimit,itbecomesfluorescent,makingitusefulforoptoelectronics,suchaslightemittingdiodes,or
lightabsorbingdevices,suchassolarcells.MoS2isalsoatruesemiconductor,makingitanexcellentcandidatefor
electronics,andithistoricallyhasbeenusedincatalysistoremovesulfurfromcrudeoil,whichpreventsacidrain.
Hersam'schallengewastofindawaytoisolateatomicallythinsheetsofthispromisingmaterialatalargerscale.For
thepastsixyears,hislabhasdevelopedmethodsforexfoliatingthinlayersofgraphenefromgraphite,usingsolution
basedmethods.
"Youwouldthinkitwouldbeeasytodothesamethingformolybdenumdisulfide,"hesaid."Buttheproblemisthat
whiletheexfoliationissimilartographene,theseparationisconsiderablymorechallenging."
Hersam'sresearchisdescribedinthepaper"Thicknesssortingoftwodimensionaltransitionmetaldichalcogenidesvia
copolymerassistedgradientultracentrifugation,"whichwaspublishedintheNov.13issueofNatureCommunications.
Tosortgraphenelayers,Hersamusedcentrifugalforcetoseparatematerialsbydensity.Todothis,heandhisgroup
addedthematerialtoacentrifugetubealongwithagradientofwaterbasedsolution.Uponcentrifugation,thedenser
speciesmovetowardthebottom,creatinglayersofdensitieswithinthecentrifugetube.Graphenesortsintosingle
layersheetstowardthetop,thenbilayersheets,trilayer,andsoon.Becausegraphenehasarelativelylowdensity,it
easilysortscomparedtohigherdensitymaterials.
"IfIusetheexactsameprocesswithmolybdenumdisulfide,itshigherdensitywillcauseittocrashout,"Hersamsaid.
"Itexceedsthemaximumdensityofthegradient,whichrequiredaninnovativesolution."
Hersamneededtotaketheinherentlydensematerialandeffectivelyreduceitsdensitywithoutchangingthematerial
itself.HerealizedthatthisgoalcouldbeachievedbytuningthedensityofthemoleculesusedtodisperseMoS2.In
particular,theuseofbulkierpolymerdispersantsallowedtheeffectivedensityofMoS2tobereducedintotherangeof
thedensitygradient.Inthismanner,thesheetsofMoS2floatedatlayeredpositionsinsteadofcollectingasthebottom
ofthecentrifugetube.ThistechniqueworksnotjustforMoS2,butforothermaterialsinthetransitionmetal
dichalcogenidesfamily.
"Nowwecanisolatesinglelayer,bilayer,ortrilayertransitionmetaldichalcogenidesinascalablemanner,"Hersam
said."Thisprocesswillallowustoexploretheirutilityinlargescaleapplications,suchaselectronics,optoelectronics,
catalysis,andsolarcells."
