Model RSO3-100
A quality product manufactured in the UK for Reef Scientific
Description:
The Reef Scientific ozone generator is a high quality product at a cost
effective price,
manufactured in the UK.
The RSO3-100 has an output that's adjustable between 0 and 100 mg. This
UK made high
specification unit uses cold plate discharge technology making it more
efficient than the moreusual corona discharge ozonisers, hence the output of
this 100 mg unit is comparable to that ofa 200mg corona discharge ozoniser
unit when used without an expensive air dryer.
The Reef Scientific Ozoniser features a built in 365 day digital timer so that it
can be run for
timed periods over the course of the day as an alternative to the more
expensive, and often
inaccurate, method of using a redox controller.
Specifications.
Unit capacity:
For the average tank the low setting on this unit should be adequate for
aquariums
between 40 litres and 400 litres water volume, dependent on the method of
ozone
introduction and bio-load ie the pollution load on the tank in terms of number
of
animals kept and the amount of food used.
For the user without the facility to monitor the ORP levels of the tank water,
at full
setting this product is designed to maintain a level of about 400mV in, up to,
3000 litres of
water without livestock. Without the use of ozone the ORP of this water would
drop lower than300mV.
Depending on the individual tank conditions, the medium setting will treat up
to an 800 litre
tank with the high setting treating up to 1600 litres.
If in a low fish density, high plant density aquarium, this unit can treat double
these
capacities. Similarly, this also applies to heavily filtered tanks.
85 260 volts AC
50 60 Hz
Max 12 w
Output: 0 100 mg
Programmable 365 Day
24-Hour Automatic Clock Timer
To switch the unit ON continuously, firmly press the lower right-hand side
button on the
auto-timer marked ON / AUTO / OFF until the LCD panel shows ON. This
function overrides the auto-timer until required. To adjust ozone output use a
narrow screwdriver or the tool supplied.
Ideally the unit should be fixed to a vertical surface but it can also be placed
on a horizontal
surface utilising the feet provided
Many problems in the marine aquarium are caused by poor water quality
conditions that are
Redox regulated, these can be remedied by the efficient application of ozone.
In a reef or planted aquarium, during the lit portion of the daily cycle, plants
produce oxygen as a bi-product of photosynthesis, conversely at night plants
and algae absorb oxygen.
This variation in the diurnal cycle can lead to a drop in water ORP levels; by
setting the ozoniser to come on at night it is possible to compensate for this
natural oxygen depletion cycle.
Injecting ozone via a skimmer greatly increases the efficiency of the process.
Minimal amounts of ozone can be used to achieve maximum benefits. As a
general guide, aim for about 1mg of ozone per 20 litres in a marine
environment. The low setting should be adequate for a healthy aquarium up
to 200 litres.
If using an air-driven protein skimmer, direct the air from your airpump
through the ozoniser unit before the airstone.
Start with the minimum amount of ozone and increase the supply as
necessary.
Pump driven Protein Skimmer.
If using a venturi air-drawn skimmer, connect the ozone unit directly to the
air intake pipe of the unit.
Start off at the low setting and increase as necessary. You should soon notice
an increase in the amount of protein waste collected.
Operational Notes.
The unit operates best when both nozzles are connected to 5mm silicone
tubing. It doesn't
matter which nozzle is used for air-in or ozone-out, the unit operates
properly whichever
way round it is connected.
Caution: The stainless steel ozone production chamber cover can become
very hot when there's a low flow of air through the chamber. Avoid touching
this component when the unit is running.
When first used, connecting the unit to the mains supply for at least15
minutes will charge the back-up battery. This will independently maintain the
digital auto-timer clock-time display, and any programs, for up to 30 days.
Time settings and programs will be lost if the unit is left disconnected from
the mains power
supply for more than 30 days. To resume, reconnect the power supply again
for 15 minutes, resetting the time, before attempting to reprogram the autotimer.
The auto-timer has the facility for 8 programs per day or group of days.
If you would prefer to operate this unit manually, you simply ignore the Autotimer.
Beginner:
For the average tank the low setting on this unit should be adequate for
aquariums between 40 litres and 400 litres water volume, dependent on the
method of ozone introduction and
bio-load ie the pollution load on the tank in terms of number of animals kept
For the user without the facility to monitor the oxygen reduction potential
(ORP) levels of the tank water, at full setting this product is designed to
maintain a level of about 400mV in, up to, 3000 litres of water without
livestock. Without the use of ozone the ORP of this water would drop lower
than 300mV.
Depending on the individual tank conditions, the medium setting will treat up
to an 800 litre
tank with the high setting treating up to 1600 litres.
If in a low fish density, high plant density aquarium, this unit can treat double
these capacities.
As a basic guide set the timer so that the ozoniser is turned on during the
hours of darkness
for a period of 10 hours. Additionally we recommend either setting a program
to turn the
ozoniser for 1 hour from 11.00 12.00 and then again from 14.00 15.00 (to
replicate naturalORP fluctuations) or for 1 hour after each feeding.
Intermediate:
For the more experienced aquarist we recommend the purchase of a handheld ORP pen.
This allows the measurement of the ORP in milli-volts (mV) and can be used
to more accurately set the amount of ozone required for a given system, with
the aim of holding levels between 350 -450 mV
Advanced:
Advanced aquarists can control the output of the ozone generator with an
ORP computer.
This uses a probe to constantly monitor the redox of the system, with the
computer turning the ozone generator on when the ORP is below the set
level, and turning it off when the ORP rises above the maximum set level.
Some people set the auto-timer to compensate for the natural oxygen
depletion cycle found in many tanks. This system allows maximum ecological
efficiency in the aquarium.
You can, of course ignore the timer completely. Whatever your requirements
are, your ozone unit is programmable simply to fit in with your lifestyle, and
those of your aquarium occupants.
Setting a Program.
You can set up to 8 auto-timer settings (ON and OFF) in any one day or any
group of days within the week.
This gives you the same times every day in that group.
Alternatively, you can have one different on and off time for every day of the
week.
Set groups of days can be easily selected and given time settings so each
day within the group can have the same timer setting.
Set groups means ANY combinations you want 365 days of the year!
Press PROG to enter into the setting mode, The display will show 1 ON.
Press WEEK to scroll through the individual days and combination groups of
your chosen
days, then press HOUR and MIN for the auto-timer TO SWITCH ON.
Press PROG again for setting the OFF time. The display will show 1 OFF.
Pressing R once will cancel the setting at any time during the program
setting mode,
Pressing R twice will recall the previous setting.
Pressing ON/ AUTO/ OFF will show either ON, AUTO or OFF in the
display.
Selecting ON will permanently switch the unit ON.
Selecting OFF will permanently switch the unit OFF.
Selecting AUTO will switch on the auto-timer modes.
Notes:
Maintenance.
If no air filter is used on the intake side of the ozone generator i.e. quality pad
on airpump or
airfilter when used with a veturi, every six to twelve months, the ceramic
ozone production disk may need carefully cleaning with an alcohol based
cleaner. This can be accessed by removing the retaining screws on the
production chamber, it is recommended to follow this procedure only if ozone
production becomes greatly reduced owing to a build-up of airborne grime on
the surface of the disk itself. Replacement ceramic ozone kits with
instructions, are not expensive and are available from your supplier as are
cleaning wipes.
Direct a flow of air through the ozone chamber for a minimum of 15 minutes
before
reconnecting.
Guarantee.
The only consumable part in the unit is the ceramic ozone production disk
(located under the
stainless-steel chamber cover), this will last for many years of standard use.
This guarantee does not cover any use of the unit outside that for which it
was designed, nor does it cover breakage due to disassembly, or any other
misuse or tampering.
