MAY A THOUSAND TIMES BE PRAISED the Most Holy Wood of the Cross, upon which Jesus Christ
our Lord didst obtain our salvation. In His hallowed Passion, the Supreme Redeemer, Who being True
God didst deign to become True Man, immolated Himself for the world. Blessed are the sorrows of
the Queen of Heaven, for in being a devout Mother, she accompanied Her Son in the torments. In this
manner be it through the ages of the endless ages, so that thus we shall adore the Holy Cross! Amen,
O precious Olive! Amen, O chosen Cedar! Amen, O exalted Palm, sublime Cypress of the Church!
Amen, O Tree of Life! Amen, even in Heaven for all eternity we shall sing thy praises!
Holy Hour with the exposition and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, in solidarity
with our persecuted brethren in the Middle
Ea, followed Holy Mass on Fir Friday,
September.
Mass was sung on the Nativity of the B. V.
M. September. In honour of her birth, a procession was made the Sunday before.

On the XIV Sunday after Penteco,


September, Exaltation of the Holy Cross, the
relic of the True Cross was exposed and
blessed, and Te Deum was sung in thanksgiving
for the th anniversary of the promulgation of
Benedict XVIs Summorum Ponticum.
The following Monday, Mass was sung for
the fea of the VII Sorrows of the B. V. M.

J, Eternal Prie,
keep all Thy pries
within the shelter of Thy
Sacred Heart, where none
may harm them.
Keep unained their
anointed hands which daily
touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep
unsullied their lips purpled
with Thy Precious Blood.
Keep pure and unearthly
their hearts sealed with the
sublime marks of Thy glorious
priehood.
Let Thy holy love surround them and shield them
from the worlds contagion.
Bless their labours with
abundant fruit, and may the
souls to whom they have miniered be here below their joy
and consolation and in Heaven their beautiful and everlaing crown. Amen.

eye. Even fellow Catholics, who during their conrmation swore
to become soldiers of Chri, turn a blind eye and a deaf ear. We
have become a race plagued with inherited cataract and otitis media. Holy
Mother Church receives unju criticism from within and without, and
many of us sit around pretending these calumnies do not harm Her.
But when She speaks to defend Herself, or when Her children speak on Her
behalfbehold!the world She continues to guide unto holiness, and its pursuit
thereof, shuns Her ever more and chaises Her children for propagating intolerance. A world that fools itself that secular
progress can be achieved by espousing a
form of tolerance that implicitly excludes
the Catholic Church is a confused and
misguided world. We submit: there is a
veritable limit to tolerance, and that tolerance can only be practiced in certain
times. Let us ask ourselves, however: in
times when the Faith is attacked under
the pressure of heathens and heretics, will
we suer the Church to perish?
We are called to be always resilient,
but never forever silent. Witnessing in
silence is indeed exemplary. Silence is a
ronger witness than words. Notwithanding the connectivity which our age
aordsa connectivity that bridges virtual diance at the expense of actual communicationwherein words reach farther deinations faer than actions.
When we defend and profess our
Faith with meekness and deference, the
world calls us self-righteous. When we do
the same as harshly and uncouthly as they
accused us, the world passes the same
sentence. Worldly people refuse to be
humoured with turning the other cheek
or an eye for an eye. Do they desire us
then to cease proclaiming Chri? The
world takes every inch of care not to convince us otherwise. We Catholics are in
no position to cease being that voice of
one crying in the wilderness: Prepare ye

the way of the Lord, make raight His


paths. (Saint Luke , )
We mu op apologising if our
Catholic Faith oends others. When demons possessing hapless men recognised
Chri during His miniry, our Lord did
not apologise to them. He drove them
out! We hold true to our Faith, because
the world itself recognises it to be divine.
Our Lord Jesus Chri Himself revealed
it unto us and unto the fathers of our forefathers. With patience and in silence, we
mu keep the re of the Faith burning.
We mu let that be known to all, to the
four corners of the worldeven at the
co of our deare friends and family. All
that we need is Chri!
They claim we should judge not; yes,
tis true. Judge not, that you may not be
judged, for with what judgment you
judge, you shall be judged: and with what
measure you mete, it shall be measured to
you again. (Saint Matthew , ) But
our Lord Himself showed us how we are
to judge. He taught us how to diinguish
the right from the wrong. He urged us on
pain of damnation to discriminate between what is according to His teaching
and what is oppugnant to it. We received
from Him the solemn admonition to
beware of false prophets, who come to
[us] in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly
they are ravening wolves for by their
fruits [we] shall know them. (Saint Matthew , )

OUR TAKE ON THINGS
What has happened to Catholic
Manila? Processions now are only
allowed to occupy one lane of the
road. In the provinces, when the
carrozas and the andas come out,
trac ops. Not one intrepid cat
passes through the highway until the la santo has
turned around the corner. Dare not hamper the
solemnity of processions! Such should be our
attitude to the divine worship of the Church:
suspend everything unholy, even if it cripples the
economy.

Have you noticed? Our table
manners have become a little
sloppy. Holy Mother Church
gave us two prayers: one to ask
God to bless the food that we
are about to eat (Bnedic, quasumus); another to thank God for the food after
eating (Grtias gimus). Nowadays, either we
only say the r, or simply mumble something
like the second before the meal. Isnt it now
time to recover the dignity of the meal?

While we are with food, lets talk
about the Mass. There is an accepted notion that the Mass is a
banquet, accentuated among
certain spheres unanchored to
sound doctrine, at the expense of
the immemorial nature of the Mass as a sacrice.
The damage, as we can imagine, appears irreparable. But let us not despair. Begin by opping the
intrusion of the coarseness and chumminess of
your average party into our Holy Mass, and letting inead the sanctity and decorum of the unbloodily re-enacted Sacrice on Calvary inuence
our attitude at the dining table.

If the Grinch were a much more
liturgically-minded end, hed
nd himself without a situation
now. The goings and comings of
our volatile economy has long
diorted Chrimas. The tinsel
comes up as early as September and parties
sprout everywhere by early December. And
then on Chrimas day, when Chrimaide
actually begins, people give their la-ditch eort
to revel for a week, and then shut down or hibernate after the Octave of Chrimas. Thats
New Year to the heathens. They could have
honoured the penitential character of Advent
and focus their celebrations in the legitimate
duration of Chrimas. The world would be a
much more logical place to live in.

no harm in the eyes of the world. Truth
is never subjective. The truth of the Catholic Faith is absolute. Chri founded a
Church, one composed of saints and sinners. He built it upon the Rock (Petros in
Greek, Keppa in Aramaic), who is Saint
Peter the Apole. The unfathomable
beauty of the Church, incomprehensible
to the world, becomes even more pronounced when She rises in triumph and
glory from the depths of Her own persecution, from without, and not surprisingly even from within. Should we be silent
then even if a sect is indeed false, ju because by their appearance they do what is
good and cause no harm?
Judge not, we agree, for in so doing,
we might pass judgment where we have
no competence. Finding ourselves guilty
of the same failures in the pa, we might
descend into hypocrisy if we forge ahead
judging in order to condemn. We mu
judge, thus, when our Chriian duty behoves us to separate the bad works from
the good. And this duty urges us to rebuke the bad, and cultivate the good.
Everyone should, at lea, be happy
to agree with that. But we mu also be
careful not to judge a sect good on the
rength of the good works they display.
Not all good exhibitions amount to good
works if underneath a darker cause lurks.
Perhaps, to bully. Perhaps, to snob. Not
all good appearances are, in truth, intrinsically good. That is the truth we profess.
The business of name-calling derives
its greate prot from those people who
had consecrated themselves to vilifying
Holy Mother Church. Extreme, extremis, fundamentals, fundamentalis, insecure, haters, abusers, we heard them all. A
lot of us know it already, so we only wait
for the day when every self-respecting
thesaurus in the world would rank Catholic among the synonyms of terrori.
This comforts us who embrace the
revealed truth of Chri. My kingdom is
not of this world, said He to Pilate. His
Church, eiusdem Ecclesia, suya Iglesia,

,
therefore, is also not of this world. She
ands not to seek after the praises of the
world, not to mole Herself into breaking records and eablishing the worlds
large heaven-knows-what. [Excuse us,
but the Church sets the andards, so
high above the clouds that nobody ever
out-achieved Her.] No, these are petty
ramblings of incoherent sects. The mark
of the real Church of Chri is the ain of
the Blood of Chri and of the martyrs
who died for the True Faith, who
suered not to walk the path of the world,
amid the praise of the worldly.
Death failed to mute us before. Who
could shut us up now? Bid us not to be
silent, especially when our enemies persecute our brethren in Iraq, Syria, and Libya! Bid us not to be silent, especially when
the world exalts false prophets who authored the greate catarophes of our
age! Bid us not to be silent, especially
when demoniacs rally behind a form of
peace that shuns the Faith. Ask us not to
be silent in order to promote peace with
people who wish to cover and snu our
Faith like a lamp concealed underneath
our beds! [We] say to you, that if [we]
shall hold their peace, the ones will cry
out. (Saint Luke , )
We profess our Faith. The Lord
commanded us: Preach the word: be
inant in season, out of season: reprove,
entreat, rebuke in all patience and
doctrine, ( Timothy , ) because you
are not of the world, but I have chosen
you out of the world, therefore the world
hateth you. (Saint John , ) Concerning those who choose not to manife
their burning lamps, unequal to the
Chriian duty to ca light upon a dark
world to discover its manifold falsehoods,
and to guide lo souls to Truth and to
the True Church, our Lord warned: He
that is not with me, is again me; and he
that gathereth not with me, scattereth. (Saint Luke , )
Let us, therefore, prudently sharpen
our tongues with the wisdom of the Lord.

Inhuman and unconscionable

, these mighty words appeared in the opinions section


of one of the mo-circulated broadsheets in the Philippines: Its rejection of contraception is inhuman, and its blocking of a family planning bill unconscionable. It does not take doctorate in English to gure out
that the antecedent of the pronoun it is Holy Mother Church. But it takes
humility to accept the intimate profundity of such educated callousness.
We r settle that the attitude of the
Church again these horrors of modern
society is unconscionable because it is
inhuman. Thus we eablish the causality.
Our blocking of a family planning bill
arises from our intrinsic opposition to
contraception. Our rejection of contraception is inhuman because it is not determined in the niteness of human intellect,
and not designed to sate the impulses of
human vice. Holy Mother Church is divine, imperfect may be Her princes. She
can never and will never sanction hedonism, and will unleash everything within
Her arsenal to prevent a ate from initutionalising veiled irresponsibility.
It is the solemn responsibility of married couples to ensure that the conjugal
act be open to all possibilities of life. Curtailing this possibility falls short of the
responsibility, and, therefore, conitutes
irresponsibility. The world wishes us to
abandon this responsibility because it is
taxing upon our weakness. Many fail in
the exercise of the virtue of chaity. The
world only sees the failure and not the

possibility of amendment, so it empowers


a tool its craftsmanship has managed to
develop in order to bypass said failure, not
realising, as Holy Mother Church has in
Her perennial wisdom, that it cannot
create something greater and more perfect that itself.
Consigning the fate of the family to a
manmade inrument is no more than
riving to be human. The Church does
not accept mankind simply riving to be
human. She teaches us to be holy, to be
like the saints, to renounce the pomp of
the world, and, in exercising our free will,
to obey the will of God. Truly it is dicult, not because God ordained it so, but
because we have allowed ourselves to be
educated that self-denial falls short of humanity. Which is precisely the case! A
decrease in humanity for the sake of obeying the Lord is an increase in holiness.
For whatever increases the esh decreases the spirit, and whatever decreases
the esh increases the spirit. This will forever remain unintelligible to a world that

only rives to be human.

MANANANGGAL DUPLICITY

odern manananggals possess an


outstanding virtue: their unmoving commitment to their cause.
This is by no means a reason to admire them. We
can pinpoint most manananggals as enemies of
the virtues of holiness, and we thank them for
being thus. At least we are spared from conducting witch trials.
But there are those manananggals who
espouse their wayward advocacies, and then call
themselves Catholics! The horror of such a damnable assertion! These manananggals are no
doubt inspired by the Lords example. Whilst the
Lord is a true sign of contradiction, these creatures pretend to be signs of contradiction to the
Church, insisting that darkness too can be incomprehensible to light.
This is the height of folly, of intellectual
pride: to fashion oneself superior to the ordinary
and universal Magisterium of the Church. Manananggals retain memory of their once unhampered ying, and they want to y above the wisdom of the Church now.
Manananggals are not necessarily pious.
But, of course! Demons ee from the sound of the
bells ringing in Catholic steeples. If they are prevailed upon to hear Mass, they do so to impose
their wicked presence upon others, and maintain
some appearance of devotion, and to put on a
piteous scene of martyrdom. They gloat with this
deed because the world likes little pockets of
rebellion from time to time. They make it clear
that they are humble enough to attend church
even if that Church persecutes their beliefs. And
they have the gumption to accuse the Church of
descending upon them in a witch hunt!
Manananggals, moreover, do not necessarily hate the Church. Why, they probably love Her
to such an extent that they want to convert Her to
their misguided principles. Wasnt it natural to us
when we were just toddling to report to our
mothers if another gremlin of a child in the playground nicked our lolly or wronged us in any
way? Well, these manananggals want to do that,
and they desire the Church to mother them
because they see the loftiness of Her position.
Demons in the angels wings seeking the
ruin of souls, they are! Cavete lamias et strigas !

Pope Saint Leo the Great

An irreconcilable enmity


morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as
the sun, terrible as an army in battle array?
This verse coming from the Canticles of
Solomon is recited everyday by the members of the Legion of
Mary as part of what they call the Catena Legionis. It speaks of
the coming forth of the Blessed Virgin as compared to the dawn
which breaks the darkness of the night. The birth of the Blessed
Virgin is like the dawn of the new creation. Now, I say new creation because the old creation was deroyed by sin and death on
account of the disobedience of our r parents. Saint Paul said:
By the disobedience of one man, sin entered into the world, and,
together with sin, entered death. [] What was supposed to be
an imperishable creation was deroyed by the envy of the devil.
But, behold, I make all things new, says the Lord. He, who is
about to create a new heaven and a new earth, created this wonderful child, like a new garden which the serpent was not allowed
to enter. Truly a better paradise than the r is given us at this
hour. Eden, fear no more that man will endeavour to enter thee;
thy Cherubim may leave the gates and return to heaven. What
are thy beautiful fruits to us, since we cannot touch these without dying? Death is now for those who will not eat of the fruit so
soon to appear amid the owers of the virgin earth to which our
God has led us. [] Adam and Eve were prohibited from eating
the death-giving fruit of the Garden of Eden. But you and I are

was immolated as our Pasch, Who, oering Himself up to the Father as the new and true sacrice of
reconciliation, neither in the temple, whose reverence had already ended, nor within the walls of the city, by the
merit of whose crime was to be deroyed, but outside and without the walls, was crucied, that, with the ancient myery of
victims ceasing, a new ho might be imposed upon the new altar,
and the Cross of the Chri be the altar, not of the temple, but of
the world.
With Chri exalted upon the Cross, my mo beloved
brethren, do not let only those things, which had been in the eyes
of the wicked, come to the sight of the mind. To them, it was said
through Moyses: And your life will be hanging before your
eyes, and you will tremble day and night, and you will not believe
your life. For they could think of nothing except their crime in
the crucixion of the Lord, harbouring fear, not in the manner
by which true faith is juied, but in the manner by which wicked conscience is tormented. Let our mind, however, which the
spirit of truth enlighteneth, receive the glory of the Cross, shining in heaven and upon earth, with a pure and free heart; let our
mind see with inward vision what mayeth be that which the
Lord hath said, when He spoke of the imminence of His Passion: Cometh the hour, that the Son of Man shall be revealed.

de recurrir Mara con la oracin del Rosario. Invocando la tradicin de la Iglesia, que [nos] ensea a volver los ojos conados a
la Madre de Dios en todos los peligros y aicciones, nos ha recordado tambin que, segn ateigua esa misma tradicin, es el Rosario la frmula de orar ms provechosa al pueblo criiano y la
ms acepta a Dios y a Mara. Por medio de la oracin del Rosario
el glorioso Patriarca Santo Domingo, que fue el primero que la

eamos celebrando las victorias que nueras armas consiguieron
en repetidas ocasiones y varios encuentros sobre ejrcitos poderosos; victorias inverosmiles, teniendo en cuenta la inferioridad,
casi nulidad, de nueros medios de defensa, habiendo sido por
ello atribuidas a la intercesin de la Virgen del Rosario. Ea ecacia de la oracin del Rosario demorada en hechos que regira la hioria de la Iglesia, nos hace esperar, como lo espera el
piadoso Pontce, que cada da se generalizar ms el uso de ea
oracin entre los eles, y por su medio se avivar la fe, renacern
las buenas coumbres y volvern das de paz a la Iglesia hoy tan
cruelmente atribulada.
De nuevo os lo repetimos, amados hijos: es necesario orar, y
orar incesantemente, porque la oracin es la llave que abre el tesoro de las divinas misericordias, y slo por misericordia de Dios
podemos ser salvos. Es necesario buscar en nueras oraciones el
amparo de Mara Inmaculada, para que cmo Madre de la gracia
y abogada de los hombres interceda por nosotros. Debis tambin, obedeciendo las intimaciones del Soberano Pontce Vicario de Jesucrio, hacer uso frecuente de la oracin del Rosario.

, beloved children, the powerful motives that the wise Ponti [Pope Leo XIII]
cometh to expound to us to persuade us of the necessity to have recourse to Mary with the prayer of the Rosary. Invoking the Tradition of the Church, which teacheth us to turn
our eyes condent unto the Mother of God in all perils and
aictions, he hath reminded us as well that, as this very same
Tradition beareth witness to, the Rosary is the form of prayer
mo protable to Chriian peoples, and the mo acceptable to
God and to Mary. Through the prayer of the Rosary, the glorious Patriarch Saint Dominic, who was the r to initute it
ipse primus inituitre-eablished the Chriian cuoms in the
populace, dissipated the error of heresy, and made powerful
princes, who sheltered and supported these errors, relinquish
their arms. Known are the triumphs of Chriian arms again
faithless armies, owed to the patronage of Mary invoked in the
prayer of the Rosary. Right here, in the capital of the Philippines,
we are celebrating the victories which our arms achieved in repeated occasions and various encounters with powerful armies;
unlikely victories, taking into account the inferiority, almo nullity, of our means of defence, having been by this attributed to
the intercession of the Virgin of the Rosary. This ecacy of the
prayer of the Rosary, demonrated in feats which the hiory of
the Church regiereth, maketh us hope, as the pious Ponti
hopeth it, that each day the use of this prayer shall become more
widely known among the faithful, and by means of it the faith
shall be enlivened, the good cuoms be reborn, and the days of
peace return to the Church today so cruelly aggrieved.
Again, We repeat it to you, beloved children: it is necessary
to pray, and to pray without ceasing, for prayer is the key that
openeth the treasury of divine mercies, and only by the mercy of
God can we be saved. It is necessary to search in our prayers the
protection of Mary Immaculate, so that ju as she is the Mother
of grace and Advocate of mankind, she mayeth intercede for us.
You mu also, obeying the intimations of the Sovereign Ponti,
the Vicar of Jesus Chri, make frequent use of the prayer of the
Rosary.

could not have elected a more appropriate
day to promulgate his apoolic letter Summorum
Ponticum. The fea of the Exaltation of the Holy
Cross reminds us of that erwhile inrument of
death whereupon the Lord made the perfect sacrice with the complete separation of His Mo
Sacred Body and His Mo Precious Blood.
Chriendom of today has forgotten the true
meaning of the Sacrice. It only has a memory of
its nobility but not of its consequence. If ever it
crosses the mind of many a modern Chriian to
invoke sacrice, he does so without fully fathoming the merit of our Lords Passion on Calvary.
This ate of amnesia, as we have regiered before,
has infected the Church.
We and for all that our predecessors in the
Faith had held sacred for centuries. To see them
eroded with such inattention and deliberateness
crushes our heart, for we see in it the impending
triumph of evanescence, that wicked impermanence of the world. But this monumental act of
Pope Benedict XVI reassures us that we can recover, to some measure, if not in its entirety, what
we have wantonly disregarded in the urry of our
intention to converse with the world.
The Church has opened Her doors and
windows to infuse the polluted air of the world
with the divine scent of Her incense. But the royal
watchmen who ought to have manned the gates to
prevent pollution from entering into the realms of
our doctrine have oundered in their duties. Now,
we and beneath the possibility of watching that
incense become extinct and depleted. Let us use
this Benedictine gift, therefore, to replenish that
incense, and reore that holy fragrance which has
threatened to ebb away amid the lth of the world.

with shadowed signs in one temple in

Angels and the archipelago

A began ju as the
immense net of evangelisation was yet to be ca upon our emerald
waters, speckled with some seven thousand isles and islets. Our
hiory saw the r Spanish settlement in these islands named after an
Archangel, to be renamed later in honour of the Son of God, and one of the
r sees in the archipelago dedicated to the Holy Guardian Angel.
On Holy Saturday, April ,
the frigate sent to reconnoitre certain islands near Bohol, which had drifted away
owing to the tide, returned. Juan de
Aguirre and Eeban Rodrguez reported
that this island of Ceb was densely,
populated, containing many large villages,
and among them were many people inhabiting the coa, and inland many cultivated diricts.
Legazpi at once called a meeting, and,
this council, unanimously overturning the
decision made earlier on Thursday in the
Fourth Week of Quadragesima, April
, appointed Ceb as the island to be
colonised, the notarial record regiering
bitterly that the natives [had] apoatised, abandoning the evangelic law that
they had received of their goodwill, and
returned to their wicked rites and olden
ceremonies. Intent, however, to seek
peace and friendship from the natives,
and to buy provisions from them at a
reasonable co, Legazpi ordered the eet
to leave Bohol.
They reached the port of Ceb on
Eaer Friday, April . The following day, Juan de Camuz found the image
of the Holy Child in a hut.
On Tuesday, May , Miguel
Lpez de Legazpi took royal and actual
possession of the island of Ceb, on behalf of the Spanish Crown. It was the

fea of the Apparition of Saint Michael.


The ceremonies of claiming possession
included, as atteed by the notarial record of Hernando Riquel, the celebration
of the Holy Sacrice of the Mass and the
appointment of the future location of the
church. It was for this very reasonthat
the possession of the island of Ceb took
place on the fea of Saint Michaelthat
the r Spanish colony in what would be
the Philippine archipelago, the boundary
of whose fort was traced on that very
same day, was named Villa de San Miguel.
This would later be renamed Villa del
Santsimo Nombre de Jess, in honour of
the Holy Child, which would become
what currently is the city of Ceb.
On June , the King, Felipe II,
issued a royal decree (cdula real) inructing his ambassador in Rome to present to
the Supreme Ponti the wishes of the
deceased bishop of Manila, Fray Domingo de Salazar, as enacted by the Cortes,
dividing the see of Manila into one metropolitan and three suragan sees. From the
Holy See, Pope Clement VIII sent to the
Spain four bulls all dated Augu ,
one bearing the incipit Super universas
orbis ecclesias, the re bearing incipit Super
specula militantis Ecclesiae.
From the bull that was intended for
the Villa del Santsimo Nombre de Jess, we
quote:

. Truly, [] by their [Venerable Brethren Cardinals of the Holy Roman


Church] counsel and assent, and by the fullness of Apoolic power, We forever remove and release the aforementioned city, by Apoolic authority, in the tenor of these
present letters, from the superiority, power and subjection, visitation, correction and

each and every other episcopal jurisdiction of the bishop of Manila for the time being;
with the aforecited authority and tenor, We likewise forever erect and initute the
same town as city to be known after the Mo Holy Name of Jesus, as well as the
church, in the same town of the Mo Holy Name of Jesus thus erected a city, already
conructed or yet to be conructed under the invocation of the Holy Guardian Angel, as cathedral church of the archbishop of Manila, for the time being, whose church,
thereupon a cathedral, We have to that extent now erected and inituted as metropolitan church, from similar causes, with the counsel of the same Brethren, through other
letters of Ours, ju as is contained more completely in the other abovementioned letters, as future suragan, as well as the see and the episcopal treasury in it, with all the
appropriate and accuomed privileges, honours, and insignia, for the bishop of the
Mo Holy Name of Jesus yet to be named, who mayeth take charge of the same church
of the Mo Holy Name of Jesus, and who mayeth possess and discharge episcopal jurisdiction, and all others which pertain to episcopal duties, and who mayeth be underneath the archbishop of Manila, by his metropolitan right [].
Bearing the same date, four royal
decrees came out of the Spanish Court
with the publication of the four aforementioned bulls. The see, however, aicted by troubles that prevented it from
erecting its temple, would only be able to
see its cathedral consecrated to the Holy
Guardian Angel in by its th bishop, the Recollect Fray Joaqun Encabo de
la Virgen de Sopetrn.
While all the sees in the island of
Luzn were placed under the patronage
of the Immaculate Conception, the see in
the Visayas, which, in the time of its vae expanse, covered the entire island of
Mindanao and the Marianas, was placed

under the patronage of the Holy Guardian Angel, its city being dedicated to the
Mo Holy Name of Jesus.
From the r fort of Saint Michael
in Ceb, the veneration of Holy Angels
germinated in dierent parts of the Philippines and spread athwart. Let us, therefore, invoke the aid of our Holy Guardian
Angels, that they may guide our daily
path and watch our nightly re.
Holy Guardian Angels, pray for us!

told to eat the fruit of the womb of Mary
so that we may not die, but may have life
eternal. [] Whoever eats the forbidden
fruit of Eden dies, but whoever does not
eat the fruit of the womb of Mary dies.
[] And Who is the fruit of the womb of
Mary? Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Jesus Himself said: Unless you eat
the esh of the Son of Man, you cannot
have life in you.
The saints were not lacking in words
in praising this day of the birth of the Virgin Mary. Saint Andrew of Crete calls
this day a solemnity of entrance, a fea of
beginning, whose end is the union of the
Word with our esh; a virginal fea full
of joy and condent for all It is the beginning of salvation, the origin of every
fea, says Saint Peter Damian, for behold! the Mother of the Bridegroom is
born. With good reason does the whole
world rejoice today; and the Church, beside Herself, bids Her choirs sing wedding songs. [] So we begin looking
forward towards Chrimas. The whole
world rejoices today! And the Church
bids Her choirs to sing wedding songs!
Indeed, what a beautiful child is born for
us today! Saint Bernard of Clairvaux said:
Mother of God, Queen of heaven, Sovereign of the world, all generations call
you blessed, for you have brought forth
life and glory for all. In you, the angels
ever nd their joy, the ju nd grace, sinners pardon; in you, and by you, and from
you, the merciful hand of the Almighty
has reformed the r creation!
But while we admire the beauty of
this little child, who is bright as the sun
and fair as the moon, let us not forget that
she is like an army arrayed for battle.
Saint Louis de Montfort said: It is by
Mary that the salvation of the world has
begun, and it is by Mary that it mu be
consummated. Being the way by which
Jesus Chri came to us the r time, she
will also be the way by which He will

through which is given unto all believers
rength from weakness, glory from
shame, life from death. Now, too, with
the variation of eshly sacrices ceasing,
the one oblation of Thy Body and Blood
fullleth all those dierences of sacrices:
for Thou art the true Lamb of God, Who
take away the sins of the world; and in
Thyself Thou accomplishe all myeries,
so that, ju as there is one sacrice for all
victims, so be there one kingdom upon all
peoples.

And because the old did pass, and all
was made new, let nobody in the antiquity of carnal life, but let everyone, in accomplishing day by day, be renewed
through the increase in piety. For howsoever much one might be juied, he nevertheless ought, while he is in this life, to
be more seemly and better as possible in
it. For whosoever accomplisheth not,
faileth; and whosoever gaineth nothing,
loseth nothing. For it is to be haened in
us with the eps of faith, with the works
of mercy, with the love of juice, so that,
spiritually celebrating the day of our redemption, not in the leaven of ancient
malice and iniquity, but the unleavened
bread of sincerity and truth, we may merit
to partake of the resurrection of Chri,
Who liveth and reigneth in the ages of the

come the second time, though not in the
same manner.
And then, Saint Louis de Montfort
arts to speak in an apocalyptic way. He
arts to speak of the la days, the nal
days, and the latter times. He said: Mary
mu shine forth more than ever in mercy,
in might, and in grace in these latter times:
in mercy, to bring back and lovingly receive the poor rayed sinners who shall
be converted and shall return to the Catholic Church; in might, again the enemies
of God, idolaters, schismatics, Mahometans, Jews, and souls hardened in impiety,
who shall rise in terrible revolt again
God, to seduce all those who shall be contrary to them, and make them fall by
promises and threats. [] And nally,
she mu shine forth in grace, in order to
animate and suain the valiant soldiers
and faithful servants of Jesus Chri, who
shall do battle for his interes. Mary
mu be terrible as an army ranged in battle, principally in these latter times. It is
principally of these la and cruel persecutions of the Devil, which shall go on increasing daily till the reign of the Antichri, that we ought to underand that
r and celebrated prediction and curse
of God, pronounced in the terrerial paradise again the serpent; I will put enmities between you and the woman, and
your seed and her seed.
God has never made or formed but
one enmity; but it is an irreconcilable one:

it is between Mary, His worthy Mother,
and the Devil; between the children and
the servants of the Blessed Virgin and the
children and the inruments of Lucifer.
Satan fears Mary not only more than all
the angels and men, but in some sense,
more than God himself. It is not that the
anger, the hatred, and the power of God
are not innitely greater than those of the
blessed Virgin, for the perfections of
Mary are limited; but it is because Satan,
being proud, suers innitely more from
being beaten and punished by a little and
humble handmaid of God, and her humility humbles him more than the Divine
power. The devils fear one of her sighs for
a soul more than all the prayers of all the
saints, and one of her menaces again
them more than all other torments.
As we nd ourselves in the middle of
this raging battle between the Woman
and the serpent, as the violence again
the Chriians in the Middle Ea escalates, as the threat of the Islamic Caliphate becomes more diurbing every
day, let us run to Mary and beg her to
crush the head of the Serpent. Together
with the Church, let us ask, as the fruit of
this fea, for that peace which seems to
ee ever farther and farther from our unhappy times. [May] the fea of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of
her Son was the dawning of salvation.

LATIN IN MASS
he Catholic Church has adopted
Latin as Her ocial language because She is the Universal Church. She
has been appointed to teach all nations
and, consequently, for Her, no national
barriers can exi. To say the Mass in a
national language, however convenient it
might be, would be unworkable in the
Catholic Church simply because She is
Catholic. Her oneness of faith is typied
in Her oneness in speech.
