Vapor Power Cycles (Ch-10)
Ideal Rankine Cycle
Zia Ud Din
Objectives
Analyze vapor power cycles in which the working fluid
is alternately vaporized and condensed.
Analyze power generation coupled with process
heating called cogeneration.
Investigate ways to modify the basic Rankine vapor
power cycle to increase the cycle thermal efficiency.
Analyze the reheat and regenerative vapor power
cycles.
Analyze power cycles that consist of two separate
cycles known as combined cycles and binary cycles.

Carnot Cycle
Sadi Carnot French Engineer in 1860 proposed the most efficient
thermodynamic cycle called Carnot Cycle
Carnot Cycle is the ideal cycle in which all heat is supplied at one
fixed temp (TH) and all the heat is rejected at a lower fixed
temperature (TL)
Carnot Cycle
Hence Carnot = Carnot Cycle Eff. given by
and
Carnot = TH TL(sB sA)/TH(sB sA)
Carnot = 1 TL/TH
If sink is kept at constant Temp (TL),
upper temperature (TH) must be made
as high as possible to get the
maximum
