Notes on The gospel

How/who do you know that has been in the church and had never really grasped the gospel.
1. They were engaged by people in their community.
2. Some of us grow up in church, even though we have been around the church all the time, we
never really understand the gospel.
3. We can understand getting saved from the world, from big sins, but most of us dont know how
to receive salvation from the church and our lifestyle within the church.
a. When we sit and think of the effect that the church has on us, and we test our faith and
we see no fruit, we have something to worry about.
b. There is a lot of confusion about what the gospel is and what Jesus came to do.
4. Colossians 1:13-14
a. We have been delivered, passive, past. I didnt deliver myself. We were transferred. The
one who gets glory is Jesus.
b. We tend to think of the kingdom of darkness in view of ovious movie-related content,
when it really is ANYTHING that substitutes God.
c. We fool ourselves because we have an externally clean life that we have nothing to
repent from.
d. We use religion so that we think we do what he saysand he will be appeased with
me. We consider a moral life to be the gate to his presence.
e. Jesus has
5. Colossians 1:15-16
a. What does God like? Look at Christ.
b. What does the purity of the Pharisees look like? WE critize them to such an extent, yet
our righteousness will never exceed theirs here. We are a meager comparison. Christ
said that unless our righteousness exceeds that of the Pharisees we will not enter the
kingdom of God.
c. We look these passages and contemplate on the point he is making, that the way to
look at who is saved is not to look at the external.
d. All things in creation were created for him.
e. We were uniquely created, wired, built, for his glory.
f. We have all disappointed by the church, at some point. One of the arguments we get
from people outside of the church is that we are all hypocrites. We are. We are broken.
If we have been let down, you are in the right placed. Because the problem is not them
its you.
g. WE have this image of a family in which thing babies are being brought into the world
and we see what kids are like. They are messy. The only way to stop dealing with a
messy child is to build them up, mature them and grow them and over time, the
problems cease. If you have kids which are never brought up, you have immature 20-30
year olds playing video games and entertaining life as single men and women for
decades. How many of us know of Christians that are still in diapers. When we hear

them talk, we are surpriced that they have spent decades in the church? No job is ever
good enough, no woman is ever good enough, no task or move or lifechange ever
lastsits because they never grew. And just like that, we have spiritual people in the
church that have been there for ages, and that may be some of usthat are sitting in
the churchunfruitful. No job, no gift, no congregations is ever good enough, no task or
responsibility you are given, no pastor ever teaches good enough, no worship service
makes us feel connected with God. News? Its not the churchits that we never really
understood the gospel. The only way to outgrow that is by resting on the work that God
has done, stop thinking we are smarter than Him and submit to what he has called us to
do.
6. Colossians 1:17-18
a. The resurrection issue is hard to explain.
b. Swuoon theory from the discovery channel: Explain all that Jesus has suffered, rolled
then stone then walked 7 miles to Ameas.
c. Give 3 examples of how the apostles died. We take lightly the deaths of the apostles and
think that a sign of Jesus approval of our life is prosperity.
7. V19-20
a. Christ is reconciling not just you and me, but ALL things unto himself.
b. When sin entered into the world, it fractured everything.
c. God created a perfect world and gave instructions on how he wants us to use his gifts,
for the joy of mankind and the glory of God. To protect us and lead us into perfect joy.
d. God created cultural callings for many of us so that we may glorify him. God has placed
us on a missional place, we have to wake up to that reality.
8. V21-23
a. Some of us are doing deeds of darkness of both spectrums.
b. Hope in what Jesus has done. IF if you stay in the gospel, on what he has done.
