UP Population Institute

The UP Population Institute (UPPI)

was established as a unit of the Univeristy of the
Philippines in November 1964 with an initial grant from the
Ford Foundation. It is the only academic institution in the
Philippines offering graduate level training in Demography and
Population Studies. It has two degree programs, Master of Arts in
Demography and Master in Population Studies.
As an academic unit, UPPI performs the three-pronged
function of teaching, research and extension. Through its links
with government, local and international agencies, it plays an
important role in the analysis of population-related issues by way
of a strong program of research and extension backed up by
facilities for analysis of survey data and a data archive of surveys
on population-related topics.
Other Training Programs
Apart from graduate level courses, the UPPI also offers
short term training and workshops on technical aspects of the
study of population enabling trainees to acquire the skills to
generate, handle, analyze and interpret population and related
data. Recent courses offered include training in Population and
Development (POPDEV), program/project assessment and
evaluation, multivariate analysis, development and
computerization of population databases. The Institute also
arranges population-related study tours or visits upon request.
Physical Facilities
UPPI has its own library housing a sizable collection of
books, journals, papers and other publications on population and
related information. It also maintains a Data Archive of the past
surveys undertaken by the Institute and its partner institutions
and other data sets for use by students, researchers and
practitioners here and abroad.
The Institute also has a computer laboratory with 30
computer units, a conference room, internet/intranet facilities and
multimedia equipment available for use of students.

program that aims to train practitioners of
Demography who are able to conduct independent
high quality research, teach Demography courses
at both graduate and undergraduate levels,
conduct short-term demographic training programs
and engage in population program formulation and

institutional research during the summer.
There are two options for obtaining the degree.
PLAN A: This is the thesis option and is advised
for students who intend to pursue a career in
