Culfest 2014
List of Events and Rules
General rules for all events.
Every participant/team will get points.
The points of each department will be totalled up at the end.
A rotating trophy will be awarded to the department that has the maximum number of
points.
No props, costumes, music, etc will be provided for any of the performances. The
participants of each department will have to look after these themselves.
Each department can participate in a maximum of 12 events (excluding sports).
The last date to submit the departmental entries for the events (with the name, class
and roll number of the participants) is January 8th by 4 pm.
Staff members may participate in a maximum of three events. This will be included in
the student participation entries.

Literary Events:
Debate
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
One person has to speak for and the other against the
proposition.
Each speaker will be allowed the maximum of five minutes.
The medium of expression will be English or Gujarati or
Hindi.
The topic will be given 24 hours in advance.
You cannot use the script when speaking.
Extempore
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Each speaker will be allowed the maximum of three minutes.
The medium of expression will be English or Gujarati or
Hindi.
Each participant will have to pick two topics, choose one
and speak on it after three minutes of preparation time.
Spell-Bee
Rules:
Only two entries per department are allowed.
The preliminary round will be a written round in which the
participants will be given ten jumbled words. They have to
write the correct spelling of each.
Secondly, they will be given ten words with a specific
number of blanks. They will be given a hint by way of
meaning. They have to write the correct spelling of the word.
If there is a tie, three words each will be spoken at one go
and they have to write the spelling of each.
The top six will go into the next round in which each
participant will be given four words for spelling and four for
pronunciation. The participants may ask for clues in the form
of the origin of the word, the part of speech, the meaning and
usage in a sentence.

Three winners will be selected from each faculty who will


participate in the final round. In the final round, the picture
of an object or an event will be flashed on the screen.
Participants will be given as many blanks as the
corresponding word. They will have to press the buzzer.
Once a participant has pressed the buzzer he/she is required
to guess the word and spell it correctly within thirty seconds.
In the second part a jumbled word will be flashed on the
screen. Participants will be given as many blanks as the
corresponding word. They will have to press the buzzer.
Once a participant has pressed the buzzer he/she is required
to guess the word and spell it correctly within thirty seconds.
In case of a tie, the participants will be asked to choose three
out of five themes on which they will be asked to spell a
word and pronounce another word.
Creative Writing
Rules:
One entry per department is allowed.
The medium of expression will be English or Gujarati or
Hindi.
The topic will be given at the beginning of the competition.
The participants have an hour to write an essay.

Dance:
Indian Folk/Tribal Dance
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
A maximum of eight (minimum four) participants are
allowed per team. The team should include girls and boys.
Only three accompanists are permitted.
The dance can be an Indian tribal dance or a folk dance.
The time duration for the dance is ten minutes only.
Two copies of a brief note giving the theme and the text of
songs, if any, are to be submitted along with the entry.
The participating team will be responsible for the removal of
the sets etc. as soon as they complete their performance.

The event will be judged on the basis of rhythm, formation,


expression and overall effect.
The maximum time for setting up the stage is five minutes.
Western Dance
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
A maximum of eight (minimum four) participants are
allowed per team. The team should include girls and boys.
Only three accompanists are permitted.
The time duration for the dance is ten minutes only.
Two copies of a brief note giving the theme and the text of
songs, if any, are to be submitted along with the entry.

Music:
Indian Solo
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Time for stage/instruments setting is maximum 2 minutes.
The number of accompanists shall not be more than three.
Duration of songs shall be between 4 to 6 minutes.
Only non-filmy songs/ghazals can be presented.
Judgement will be made on the qualities like swara, taal,
selection of raga, composition and general impression.

Indian Group Song


Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Maximum 8 singers in a group and 3 accompanists are allowed.
A team has to present two songs.

The group songs should be taken from Indian songs which can
be in a regional language.
Only non-film songs are allowed.
Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes which
does not include setting time. The setting time for a group shall
not exceed 5 minutes.
Judging will be on the basis of the quality of singing only and
not on make-up, costumes and actions.
Western Group Song
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Maximum 8 singers in a group and 3 accompanists are allowed.
The group song has to be in English.
Maximum time allowed for the group song is 10 minutes which
does not include setting time. The setting time for a group shall
not exceed 5 minutes.
Judging will be on the basis of quality of singing only and not
on make-up, costumes and actions.
Western Solo
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Time for stage/instruments setting is maximum 2 minutes.
The number of accompanists would not be more than three.
Duration of songs shall be between 4 to 6 minutes.
Judgement will be made on the qualities like timing, rhythm,
co-ordination, clarity and general impression.
The song has to be in English.

Fine Arts:
Poster Making
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.

Item will be conducted on the spot and the participants will


be requested to do poster making on the subject/topic/theme
given by the in-charge of the competition.
Duration will be not more than 1 hour 30 minutes.
Participants shall bring their own material. Only the drawing
paper/sheet 22 x 15 will be provided by the organizers.
Collage
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Item will be conducted on the spot and the participants will
be requested to do poster making on the subject/topic/theme
given by the in-charge of the competition.
Duration will be not more than 1 hour 30 minutes.
Participants shall bring their own material- scissors, pasting,
etc. Only the drawing paper/sheet 22 x 15 will be provided
by the organizers.
Collage has to be prepared from old magazines.
Cartooning
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Item will be conducted on the spot and the participants will
be requested to do poster making on the subject/topic/theme
given by the in-charge of the competition.
Duration will be not more than 1 hour 30 minutes.
Participants shall bring their own material. Only the drawing
paper/sheet 22 x 15 will be provided by the organizers.
Rangoli
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Duration will not be more than 1 hour and 30 minutes.
Participants shall bring their own material. This art is known
differently in various regions such as Manda, Aplana,
Alekhan, Kolam, Rangoli, etc. For this the medium and form
for expression can be free hand, pictorial and descriptive.

Only one medium shall be used- Poster Colours or Flower


Petals or Saw-dust or Pulses or Rice without pasting.
The participants shall have to prepare a rangoli within the
space provided by the organizations.
Do not use instruments to complete the work.
It should look the same from all sides.

Drama:
Skit
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Maximum numbers of 8 participants are allowed to
participate.
Maximum time allotted for each team 10 minutes.
Use of make-up, drapery and background music is allowed.
No personal remarks, aspersions, character assassination etc,
is allowed.
Participating team should submit three copies of the synopsis
of the theme of the Skit, along with language of presentation
(Hindi or Gujarati) with entry.
The item will be judged basically on the qualities like theme,
work on acting, stage craft, design and general impression.
Vulgarity or bitter insinuations in presentation should be
avoided. Only innocent satire or humour is expected.
Mono Acting
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Duration of performance should be between 4 to 5 minutes.
Participants can perform only one character.
Three copies brief note on the script, name of the author and
theme should be submitted in advance to in-charge of
competition.
Costumes and other required properties should be brought by
the participant.
Judgement will be based on relevance, quick response,
acting, theme, costume and general impression.

Mimicry
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Duration of performance should be between 4 to 5 minutes.
Participants may mimic sound of machines and speeches of
will known person etc, including film personalities.
Marking will be based on:
- Skill imitating.
- Variety of sound and voices imitate.
- Presentation.

Sports:
Football
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.

Basketball
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
Volleyball
Rules:
Only one entry per department is allowed.
