She T h e r e f o r e M a d e a Scene a n d Concluded It by Swallowing Carb o l i c Acid.

Irene Stowe, after six years' experience in the music halls, tried* to commit
suicide yesterday morning by drinking
carbolic acid in front of No. 340 Bowery.

I r e n e desperate. I t was the fact t h a t
h e r lover, a traveling salesman named
Albert J. Gatz, refused to pay her further
a t t e n t i o n , because in a moment of w a y w a r d n e s s Irene had contracted
the
liquor habit.
This was thoughtless in Irene, but
should not necessarily have
entailed
such serious consequences.
She is now in St. Vincent Hospital, and
it is thought she cannot live.
As long as six years ago the girl
aspired to become a footlights favorite.
She was then 20 years of age, distinguished by good looks, a misguided ambition and lived a t Rockville, Canada.
Gatz was selling goods in the town, and
they met by chance. The chance seems
to have been t h a t Irene was good looking and Gatz was from New York.
So they came here together, and the
girl sought to fulfill her stage ambitions. H e r singing was liked and she
w a s successful to the extent of winning
applause in the music halls of Coney
Island. She also appeared for a time in
a t least one of the concert halls on the
Bowery.

On occasions she reminded Gatz of the

promise she says he made to marry her,
but the ceremony was put off from time
to time, and finding t h a t it only made
trouble to remind him of their relations,
she brought up the subject less frequently.
Three weeks ago they separated after
a quarrel. They were then living a t
Coney Island, where she had been filling
a n engagement a t a music hall. Gatz
left her and she lost track of him.
Sh? knew t h a t - h e worked for an importer as a clerk a t No. 314 Broadway,
but she never could get to see him there.
Finally she learned t h a t he was living a t
a t the Believue Hotel, at No. 340 Bowery,
and last night she went there to wait
for him to come home.
It was 2 o'clock in the morning when
he walked into the place. He did not see
h e r at the door, bui she followed him to
his room. There she began to plead with
him to return to her and become her
legal husband.

drained the contents in an instant.
An ambulance was summoned
and
took her to the hospital. Gatz went with
the policeman to the station and told
w h a t he knew of the affair.
"We separated," he said, "because she
became a hard drinker. I could not live
with a drinking woman."

A locomotive on the Third Avenue " L "

road at Ninety-ninth street hit a train
coming out of the yards there yesterday, knocking one car off the track, damaging it, displacing the rails and blockading traffic for an hour. No one was
hurt.
A train of four cars was backing down
from the yard when the free locomotive
! came up behind. Through a misunderstanding it hit the rear car of the train
a s it was still on the curve. I t knocked
:he car off the track, breaking the woodwork, tearing up the rails for several feet
and smashing the ties.
Wreckers were hurried to the scene,
but other trains came u p one after a n other until a switch had to be used for
letting them pass by. The southbound
trains were switched to the northbound
track and again to the southbound, but
some distance below.
The derailed car and the displaced rails
were fixed up, t h e car being taken to the
yard.

were saved from death only by the daring work of the firemen.
T h e building is in a densely populated
district, and the fire, occurring quite
early in the morning, caused intense excitement.
Tenants in the adjoining building were
aroused by the police, and,' screaming
and scrambling, they made their way out
of the house in wild disorder.
When the firemen arrived the flames
were roaring up the shafts in the centre
of the building, having started on the
third floor.
Aaron Baeger, of Jersey City, employed
on the fifth floor, w a s partially overcome
by the smoke, and staggered out on the
fire escape. He started to jump, when
Fireman Burns, of Hook and Ladder No.
18, saw the man's peril.
"Don't j u m p ! Don't j u m p ! " yelled the
fireman.
Baeger, reassured, climbed
down to within one flight of the street,
but then deliberately

move. They caught the m a n dexterously and he got only a shaking up.
Fireman Thomas F . Smith, of Engine
No. 15, saw Abraham Levinsky, on the
third floor fire escape, as he sank overcome by smoke. Flames were belching
out all around him, and it looked as if
Levinsky would be broiled alive on the
iron grating.
Smith went up the iron work and,
grabbing the unconscious man, just as
his clothing was catching Are, carried
him down, while the crowd cheered
wildly.
Jacob Aschwitz and Samuel Galiemus,
on the fifth floor, were almost cut off by
the flames. They had to break through
several doors by hurling
themselves
against them.
